Exploring Chatgpt’S Clinical Ethics Ability: A Pilot Study, Daniel Jenkins, Christian Vercler, Andrew Barnosky, Janice Firn Oct 2024

Exploring Chatgpt’S Clinical Ethics Ability: A Pilot Study, Daniel Jenkins, Christian Vercler, Andrew Barnosky, Janice Firn

Journal of Health Ethics

Background: Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly public models like ChatGPT, has revolutionized the generation of human-like thought processes and text. Across healthcare, the integration of AI in decision-making processes is increasingly pervasive. However, the application of AI in ethical decision-making remains relatively unexplored.

Methods: Ethics consultation notes from a tertiary academic medical center were de-identified. We trained ChatGPT using three separate ‘chats’ with one, two, or five unique notes and asked it to produce an ethical analysis/discussion and recommendations for a test case. We conducted this same series again but gave ChatGPT only the ethical analysis/discussion and recommendation sections from the …

Street-Side Sovereignty: Informal Produce Vendors, Subsistence, And Chosen Interdependencies, Owen W. Lee Oct 2024

Street-Side Sovereignty: Informal Produce Vendors, Subsistence, And Chosen Interdependencies, Owen W. Lee

Samoa: Social and Environmental Change in Oceania

This paper summarizes findings from a 2024 survey and interview conducted with street-side produce vendors in Western Samoa. Produce vendors are understood within the informal economy in Samoa and the phenomenon is contextualized through a history of Pacific food regimes. In opposition to the contemporary corporate food regime, produce vendors operate through small-scale, informal operations which demonstrate variability and individual agency. Through the theoretical framework of food sovereignty, informal produce vendors’ survey and interview responses are analyzed to position vendors’ work within both the global and the Pacific food sovereignty movements, with special attention to land access and localized food …

A Social History Of Hanoi’S Old Quarters: Community Participation In Preserving Hanoi’S Architectural Heritage, Moana Gregory Oct 2024

A Social History Of Hanoi’S Old Quarters: Community Participation In Preserving Hanoi’S Architectural Heritage, Moana Gregory

Vietnam: Culture, Social Change, and Development

Hanoi’s old quarters are a crucial site when considering the question of urban development alongside cultural heritage preservation. With a history reaching back to the 11th century, its architecture carries stories of village-city craft relations; French colonialism, as well as Chinese and Soviet influences; and most importantly of the desires, hopes and challenges its residents faced throughout the different periods. Today, deteriorating buildings, high population density, lacking infrastructure, and the replacement of houses with modern hotels, restaurants, and tourist offices, pose a threat to maintaining the historical landscape and a challenge to the livelihood of its inhabitants. While several studies …

International Advocacy For Tibet: The Current State Of Geopolitical Influences And Methods Of International Action For Tibetan Human And Political [email protected], Sophia Comiskey Oct 2024

International Advocacy For Tibet: The Current State Of Geopolitical Influences And Methods Of International Action For Tibetan Human And Political [email protected], Sophia Comiskey

Nepal: Tibetan and Himalayan Peoples

Historically, international advocacy for Tibet has been shaped by Cold War and decolonization era policies to frame Tibetans as victimized objects of international charity. This has left a legacy which continues today, in which Tibetans advocating for an end to human rights abuses inside of China interact with a broader international system which has historically left them out of their own advocacy movement. In this paper, I focus on the methods of appeals that the Central Tibetan Administration and Tibetan non-governmental organizations make to foreign governments and supranational bodies like the UN, because these are what have been seen to …

A Portrait Of The Artist, 1525–1825: Prints From The Collection Of The Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation, Cyndy Basil, Isobel Debenham, Sarah Kate Gillespie, Felicia M. Else

Schmucker Art Catalogs

Consisting of fifty-one prints on loan from the Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, this exhibition examines how artists depicted themselves and their profession from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. The show includes artists such as Rembrandt van Rijn, Salvator Rosa, William Hogarth, Claude Lorrian, and Francisco Goya, among others. Created during a period when the social status of artists was in flux, the prints represent both artists’ lives and work, and the roles that both artists and the arts held in society. Full of allegory and rich in satire, the works include self-portraits, representations of …

The Constitutional Right To Peremptory Challenges In Jury Selection, Richard Lorren Jolly Oct 2024

The Constitutional Right To Peremptory Challenges In Jury Selection, Richard Lorren Jolly

Vanderbilt Law Review

The peremptory challenge is one of the oldest and most well-established jury selection procedures. Its use dates back to the earliest days of English common law, and it was a firmly established and protected practice at the United States’ founding and into the early twentieth century. But while peremptory challenges are foundational, they remain perhaps the most controversial aspect of jury selection today. This is because they are regularly used by the government and private parties to advance racist, sexist, and bigoted ends. For this reason, over the last three decades, calls to abolish the practice have been regularly made …

The Spiritual Well‑Being Scale In The Polish Catholic Setting: Construct, Structure, And Relationships With Psychological Well‑Being, Beata Zarzycka, Kamil Tomaka, Michał Grupa, Raymond F. Paloutzian, Rodger K. Bufford

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

The population of Poland could be of particular interest to researchers studying religion and spirituality. Catholicism has played a significant role in shaping the country’s culture, history, and tradition and is considered a national religion. More recently, however, the processes of moving away from regular participation in religious services and loosening ties with the institution of the Catholic Church are marked (Polish Public Opinion Research Center, CBOS). The Polish Catholic setting may modify the associations between psychological variables that have been studied in their relationships with spirituality, which have been investigated in religious contexts differing from a Polish Catholic one. …

Multimodal Strategies For Mitigating Congestion From Urban Parcel Delivery, Mark Hansen, Pei-Sung Lin, Zhenyu Wang, Yu Zhang, Ang Li Oct 2024

Multimodal Strategies For Mitigating Congestion From Urban Parcel Delivery, Mark Hansen, Pei-Sung Lin, Zhenyu Wang, Yu Zhang, Ang Li

Research Reports

The explosive growth in e-commerce, the increasing urgency of de-carbonization, the rapid advances in UAV technology, and the continuous disruptive development of the gig economy create needs and opportunities for dramatic improvements in urban package delivery. E-commerce may greatly increase the demand for such deliveries, traditionally made by truck and van, as urban residents substitute purchases made over the Internet for those acquired in brick-and-mortar stores. To mitigate the congestion impact of truck and van traffic, as well as reduce costs and travel times, last-mile delivery should in many cases be shifted toward non-motorized modes (e.g., walkers and bicyclists) and …

The State Of Gender And Education Needs In Kenya: The Missing Step Toward Gender Equity, Lina López-Lalinde, Meredith Kozak, Eva Ireri Muluve, Ruth Nanjekho Wafubwa, Erica Soler-Hampejsek

Gender Equality and Equity

The Kenya Gender and Education Roadmap is a series of four evidence briefs designed to provide a comprehensive analysis of the gender and education landscape in Kenya. Drawing from a variety of key data sources, including the Population Council’s Evidence for Gender and Education Resource (EGER) Database, DHS and national-level datasets, and recent literature from East Africa the series provides data-driven insights into gender-related barriers to schooling, especially for girls. By combining needs assessments, current evidence, and practice-based research, the series sheds light on the alignments and gaps in Kenya’s efforts to achieve gender equity in education. This brief aims …

Teaching Brand Strategy In Design: A Seventeen-Step Methodology, Nicolas Guimarães Vieira Oct 2024

Teaching Brand Strategy In Design: A Seventeen-Step Methodology, Nicolas Guimarães Vieira

MFA Theses Exhibitions Final Papers

View the Digital Exhibition of Seventeen Steps to Strategy

The concepts of design and branding have evolved significantly over time, becoming increasingly complex and interdisciplinary. Despite the general presence of the design field in contemporary society, specific definitions and practices in design often seem ambiguous to people not in the field. This thesis focuses on exploring the multifaceted nature of design within education, particularly as it relates to strategy and branding, and proposes a shift in perspective, namely regarding how young designers are taught to deal with conceptualization, research, and project development related to brands while in university. Through research …

Addressing The Teacher Shortage: A Data-Driven Exploration Of Computer Science Teacher Capacity In Wisconsin High Schools, Sujeeth Goud Ramagoni Oct 2024

Addressing The Teacher Shortage: A Data-Driven Exploration Of Computer Science Teacher Capacity In Wisconsin High Schools, Sujeeth Goud Ramagoni

Dissertations (1934 -)

The rapid evolution of technology and its integration across virtually every field has made computer science (CS) education a crucial component of modern curricula. Despite the increasing demand for CS skills and being the top source of new wage creation in the U.S., CS education remains undervalued and underrepresented in high school systems. This disparity is particularly evident in Wisconsin (WI), where the lack of certified CS teachers creates significant barriers to student access and equitable participation in CS courses. Although WI implemented a CS teacher certification requirement over 30 years ago and was among the earlier states to adopt …

Black People’S Reasons For Becoming Professional Counselors: A Grounded Theory, Michael D. Hannon, Lashawn M. Adams, Natalie Nieves, Estefanie Ceballo, David Julius Ford, Jr., Linwood G. Vereen

Department of Counseling Scholarship and Creative Works

Drawing from the concepts of Critical Race Theory and the Theory of Nigrescence, we report the results of a grounded theory study to explain why a sample of 28 Black counselors chose their profession. Findings suggest that the contributors to this study were motivated to become counselors because of their inspiration to challenge cultural mandates (i.e., grounding motivator), to disrupt Black underrepresentation (i.e., secondary motivator), and to live out their personal and professional convictions (i.e., secondary motivator). Recommendations for counselor education, counseling practice, and counseling research are included.
