Ai-Based Scaffolding Deficiency Detection As A Proactive Construction Safety Intervention: A Conceptual Review Of Methodological Approaches, Adetayo Onososen, Innocent Musonda

CIB Conferences

Falls from height and structural collapse associated with scaffolding remain among the most persistent contributors to construction fatalities worldwide, and the problem is sharper still in resource-constrained settings where inspection capacity is thin on the ground. This paper sets out a conceptual outline for an AI-based scaffolding deficiency detection system designed as a proactive safety intervention rather than a post-incident diagnostic. Drawing on a thematic review of computer vision methods applied to scaffolding inspection between 2019 and 2026, the study maps what has been tried, where the evidence converges, and where it still falls short. Four structural deficiency classes grounded …

Applications Of Ai For Real-Time Mechanical Behavior Prediction In Deep Excavation Support Systems: A Critical Review, Ngoc-Tuyen Tran, Quang Dung Tran, Hong-Lam Dang, Duc Phi Do

CIB Conferences

Progressive deformation in deep urban excavations can trigger catastrophic collapse before conventional monitoring and finite element method (FEM) back-analyses can effectively respond, primarily due to observational and computational latency. This paper presents a PRISMA-adapted review of 20 peer-reviewed studies (2021–2025) investigating artificial intelligence (AI) frameworks for real-time mechanical behavior prediction in deep excavation support systems. Two methodological streams are examined: data-driven models (LSTM, Transformers, ST-GAT) and physics-informed approaches (DeepONet, MS-SDL). By mathematically constraining deep learning within governing partial differential equations, these physics-informed models reduce the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of wall deflection predictions by 40–60% relative to standalone three-dimensional …

Exoskeletons have shown promise for reducing work-related musculoskeletal disorders and improving worker safety in construction, yet evidence on deployment in real construction environments remains fragmented. This study reviews peer-reviewed empirical research on exoskeleton use in active construction settings to examine implementation patterns, barriers, facilitators, and research gaps. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a systematic review was conducted across Web of Science, Scopus Library, and Google Scholar. Studies were included if they reported empirical evidence on active construction environments or realistic near-site simulations involving professional construction workers. After duplicate removal, screening, full-text eligibility assessment, and backward snowballing, 23 studies were included. Evidence …

(Re)Shaping The Path Of Rural Tourism In Central Vietnam: When Traditionalism As A Driver For Architectural Multiformity, Tung Minh Tran, Chau Thi Bao Huynh Jun 2026

(Re)Shaping The Path Of Rural Tourism In Central Vietnam: When Traditionalism As A Driver For Architectural Multiformity, Tung Minh Tran, Chau Thi Bao Huynh

CIB Conferences

Rural tourism in Central Vietnam faces tension between infrastructure modernization and the preservation of vernacular architectural identity. This paper examines the (re)configuration of rural tourism by conceptualizing traditionalism as a driver for architectural multiformity rather than a static constraint. Through a multiple-case study of six representative villages and 23 semi-structured interviews with local stakeholders, the study identifies (neo-)vernacular practices and strategies for integrating local materials into contemporary hospitality typologies. Findings demonstrate that a tradition-centric approach supports hybrid morphologies that balance heritage conservation with economic needs. The paper concludes that traditionalism provides a resilient framework for shaping sustainable, locally grounded tourism …

Net-Zero Construction And Decent Work: Skills Transition Challenges In The Construction Workforce, Dinh-Phong Nguyen, Duy Anh Bui, Quan T. Nguyen, Van-Truong Dinh, Viet-Huong Nguyen, Hoang-Mai Dang

CIB Conferences

The transition towards net-zero construction is transforming not only the technologies used in the built environment but also the capabilities and working conditions of the construction workforce. While existing research has largely focused on engineering solutions for reducing carbon emissions, comparatively limited attention has been paid to the labour implications of this transition. This paper addresses this gap by examining how sustainability transitions reshape workforce competencies, labour market dynamics, and decent work conditions in the construction sector. Adopting an integrative literature review approach, the study analyses 63 academic publications and policy reports related to sustainable construction, workforce development, and green …

A Systematic Review Of Llm–Based Question Answering For Construction Site Safety, Minh Hieu Nguyen, Thuy-Duong T. Tran, Quang-Vu Phung, Quan T. Nguyen, Po-Han Chen, Bao-Ngoc Nguyen Jun 2026

A Systematic Review Of Llm–Based Question Answering For Construction Site Safety, Minh Hieu Nguyen, Thuy-Duong T. Tran, Quang-Vu Phung, Quan T. Nguyen, Po-Han Chen, Bao-Ngoc Nguyen

CIB Conferences

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly proposed for construction-site safety question answering, yet the evidence base remains small, recent, and methodologically mixed. This review synthesises 17 studies identified through a PRISMA-guided search of Scopus and Web of Science, supplemented by backward snowballing and structured quality appraisal. Unlike broader surveys of artificial intelligence in construction, the paper focuses on how LLM-based safety QA systems are adapted for reliability in high-stakes site contexts. The corpus is organised into three intervention layers: prompt and interaction design, retrieval and knowledge grounding, and model-level architectural adaptation. Prompt-based approaches are accessible and common, but remain constrained …

Mitigating Llm Hallucinations In Construction Safety: A Model-First Framework With Retrieval-Augmented Validation, Quang-Vu Phung, Minh Hieu Nguyen, Quan T. Nguyen, Bao-Ngoc Nguyen, Po-Han Chen Jun 2026

Mitigating Llm Hallucinations In Construction Safety: A Model-First Framework With Retrieval-Augmented Validation, Quang-Vu Phung, Minh Hieu Nguyen, Quan T. Nguyen, Bao-Ngoc Nguyen, Po-Han Chen

CIB Conferences

Urban rail construction is one of the most safety-critical engineering domains, where even minor errors can lead to catastrophic consequences. Large Language Models (LLMs) offer promising capabilities for automating safety risk extraction from accident reports; however, their deployment is critically hindered by hallucinations – outputs that are fluent yet factually incorrect or logically inconsistent. Existing prompting methods such as Chain-of-Thought rely on implicit reasoning without explicit problem representation, leading to brittleness, logical drift, and undetected constraint violations. This paper addresses key research gaps in current approaches, including the lack of constraint grounding in authoritative knowledge bases, the absence of explicit …

The Impact Of Commute Length On Safety And Wellbeing In Uk Construction Workers, Amy Brandreth, Billy Hare, Kenneth Lawani Jun 2026

The Impact Of Commute Length On Safety And Wellbeing In Uk Construction Workers, Amy Brandreth, Billy Hare, Kenneth Lawani

CIB Conferences

This paper, contributing a small part to a related PhD, uses a systematic literature review approach to examine the impact of commuting on fatigue, safety and wellbeing among construction workers. Eight empirical studies were analysed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis with three themes being identified: commute length, long working hours and commuting vs staying away from home. The results indicate that commutes can far exceed the UK average commute length, and this, combined with long working hours, reduces sleep opportunities. However, staying away from home introduces lifestyle and environmental factors, such as diet and exercise, which may also impair …

Proactive Management Of Weather And Climate Hazards In Construction: A Systematic Evidence Synthesis And Roadmap, Neema George, Chandana Siriwardana

CIB Conferences

Construction work is highly exposed to extreme weather due to outdoor operations and physically demanding tasks. As climate variability intensifies, heat, cold, storms, and heavy rainfall present increasing risks to worker safety, productivity, and project continuity. Despite this, weather-related risk management in construction remains largely reactive and inconsistently implemented. This study presents a PRISMA-based systematic literature review of 100 studies published between 2015 and 2025, examining proactive and technology-enabled strategies for managing extreme weather in construction. Bibliometric mapping and thematic synthesis were applied to identify hazard distribution, intervention types, and implementation gaps. The findings reveal a strong concentration on heat …

Self-Reported Ai Literacy And Scenario-Based Judgement In Academic Ai Use: Evidence From Undergraduate Construction Economics Students, Hang Thi Thu Nguyen, Duc Minh Nguyen, Bao-Ngoc Nguyen

CIB Conferences

The rapid uptake of generative AI in higher education has made student AI use increasingly common, but frequent use does not necessarily imply sound academic judgement. This study examines the relationship between self-reported AI literacy and scenario-based judgement among 379 undergraduate construction economics students at Hanoi University of Civil Engineering (HUCE). A cross-sectional survey combined 32 self-reported AI literacy items across four dimensions with six scenario-based judgement tasks covering academic writing, problem solving, use of project data, and source verification. Descriptive statistics, reliability checks, and correlational analyses were used. Students reported moderately positive AI literacy across all four dimensions, yet …

Assessing Toolbox Talk Efficiency: A Comparative Analysis Of International Best Practices And Indian Construction Realities, Shrinidhi Shankar, Nikhil Bugalia

CIB Conferences

Toolbox Talks (TBTs) serve as the primary mechanism for task-level hazard communication on construction sites worldwide; however, their effectiveness in contexts outside North America and Europe remains poorly understood. This paper presents one of the first systematic examinations of TBT practice on Indian construction sites, combining semi-structured interviews with 14 safety professionals and a PRISMA-guided systematic review of 30 international studies spanning more than 10 national contexts. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study identifies structural constraints unique to Indian construction, including multilingual workforces, daily wage employment systems, multi-tier subcontracting, and the legal exposure of site engineers, all of which fundamentally …

Conceptualising Stress, Anxiety, And Depression In The Construction Industry And Evidence And Gaps, Cillian Keane, John Spillane Jun 2026

Conceptualising Stress, Anxiety, And Depression In The Construction Industry And Evidence And Gaps, Cillian Keane, John Spillane

CIB Conferences

Mental Health challenges, particularly stress, anxiety, and depression, are prominent within the construction industry globally. Despite growing awareness of mental health in the construction industry, existing literature remains fragmented, with these constructs often investigated in isolation rather than how they co-occur and compound over time within the pressures of construction work. Building on the need to synthesise fragmented knowledge, this study conducted a structured narrative review of research on construction mental health literature related to stress, anxiety, and depression. Searches were undertaken across Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed, for studies published from 2000 to 2026 using terms related to …

Enhancing Worker Wellbeing: The Impact Of Technological Ergonomic Interventions On Health, Safety And Productivity In The Construction Industry, Rose Matete, John Smallwood

CIB Conferences

Ergonomic hazards such as repetitive motions, awkward postures, forceful exertions, and prolonged static positions continue to drive musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and productivity losses in construction. This structured narrative review synthesises literature from 2002–2025 relative to technological and participatory ergonomic interventions, drawing on major academic databases and International Labour Organization reports. Evidence shows that wearable sensors, exoskeletons, Virtual Reality training, Building Information Modelling, and Internet of Things enabled monitoring reduce biomechanical strain, enhance hazard recognition, and improve productivity, though adoption is limited by cost, worker acceptance, and organisational culture. Integrating ergonomics at the design stage and combining technology with participatory approaches …
