Johann Georg Hamann And The Liberal Project, Jesse D. Ansley Jan 2025

Johann Georg Hamann And The Liberal Project, Jesse D. Ansley

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines the political thought of Johann Georg Hamann, his relationship to liberalism, and the importance to modern concerns for consensus formation and intercultural dialogue. This contributes to the line of literature sparked by Isaiah Berlin debating the political legacy of Hamann and its relation to the development of modern politics. Berlin labels Hamann an anti-rationalist whose current developed into the ideology of the Nazi party. My work supports the countervailing arguments that Hamann’s work is importantly different from the Romantics he inspired and even more so from the Nazis. By examining two complete works and a number of …

Development Of Sacb-Based Counterselection For Efficient Allelic Exchange In Fusobacterium Nucleatum, Peng Zhou, Bibek G C, Bo Hu, Chenggang Wu

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Fusobacterium nucleatum, prevalent in the oral cavity, is significantly linked to overall human health. Our molecular comprehension of its role in oral biofilm formation and its interactions with the host under various pathological circumstances has seen considerable advancements in recent years, primarily due to the development of various genetic tools for DNA manipulation in this bacterium. Of these, counterselection-based unmarked in-frame mutation methods have proved notably effective. Under suitable growth conditions, cells carrying a counterselectable gene die, enabling efficient selection of rare, defined allelic exchange mutants. The sacB gene from Bacillus subtilis, encoding levansucrase, is a widely used …

Disrupted Relatedness And Shifting Perceptions Of Others: Changing Moods Over Time For People Diagnosed With Bipolar Disorder, Joanna Farr, Jonathan A. Smith, John E. Rhodes

The Qualitative Report

For people diagnosed with bipolar disorder, the relationship between mood episodes and interpersonal life is critical. Yet little is known about how their experience of other people changes during and between episodes of depression and mania. This longitudinal study aimed to investigate the experience of interpersonal change during depression, mania and euthymia (stability). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three women at two time points and were analysed using longitudinal interpretative phenomenological analysis. One longitudinal theme, “Changing sense of others impacts relatedness,” demonstrates profound changes in participants’ experiences of other people within and between episodes. During depression, participants experienced other people …

A Survey On Food Ingredient Substitutions, Hyunwook Kim, Revathy Venkataramanan, Amit P. Sheth

Publications

Diet plays a crucial role in managing chronic conditions and overall well-being. As people become more selective about their food choices, finding recipes that meet dietary needs is important. Ingredient substitution is key to adapting recipes for dietary restrictions, allergies, and availability constraints. However, identifying suitable substitutions is challenging as it requires analyzing the flavor, functionality, and health suitability of ingredients. With the advancement of AI, researchers have explored computational approaches to address ingredient substitution. This survey paper provides a comprehensive overview of the research in this area, focusing on five key aspects: (i) datasets and data sources used to …

Robotic-Assistance Is Associated With Better Joint Outcomes Compared To Conventional Techniques In Surgically Routine Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Propensity-Matched Large Database Study Of 3948 Patients, Aakash K. Shah, Monish S. Lavu, Christian J. Hecht

Student Scholarship

Introduction: The outcomes of total hip arthroplasty (THA) are highly dependent upon the restoration of native hip biomechanics and optimal component positioning. Robotic technologies for THA have rapidly improved the accuracy of component positioning and maintaining the planned center of rotation. While robotic-assisted THA (RA-THA) has primarily been employed in surgically intricate cases, its potential benefits in scenarios of diminished surgical complexity remain less explored. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the odds of developing systemic and joint complications following RA-THA in cases of reduced surgical complexity. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using the TriNetX …

Obesity is a chronic disease that contributes to the development of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes (T2D), and cardiovascular risk. Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor (GIPR) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor (GLP-1R) co-agonism provide an improved therapeutic profile in individuals with T2D and obesity when compared with selective GLP-1R agonism. Although the metabolic benefits of GLP-1R agonism are established, whether GIPR activation impacts weight loss through peripheral mechanisms is yet to be fully defined. Here, we generated a mouse model of GIPR induction exclusively in the adipocyte. We show that GIPR induction in the fat cell protects mice from diet-induced …

How Research Into Citizenship Education At University Might Enable Transformative Human Rights Education, Piers Von Berg Jan 2025

How Research Into Citizenship Education At University Might Enable Transformative Human Rights Education, Piers Von Berg

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

This article presents a new research design for pedagogical research at university. The design demonstrates how personal and cultural citizenship education can be a form of transformative human rights education by nurturing citizens who challenge patterns of exclusion. It draws on shared traditions of citizenship and human rights education that have focused on lived experiences of injustice and uses spaces that mitigate prevailing power structures. These ideas have shaped a new pedagogical action research design that uses theories and practices of transformational learning, authentic reflection, and participatory theatre to stimulate ‘becomings’ in civic identity and agency. ‘Becoming’ is a form …

Turbulent Structures In Coupled Wind-Wave Flows, Cerrina Mouchref Jan 2025

Turbulent Structures In Coupled Wind-Wave Flows, Cerrina Mouchref

Dissertations and Theses

The interactions between wind and waves in offshore environments are complex and have yet to be fully understood. Analyzing these interactions is motivated by an increased interest in climate modeling and the deployment of offshore construction, such as offshore wind farms. In this study, experiments are performed in a wind tunnel using particle image velocimetry (PIV) to analyze wind-wave interactions over various wave and wind speeds. The addition of the wave, a moving boundary, leads to the use of Reynolds triple decomposition in order to separate the turbulent and wave-phase coherent fluctuations. A curvilinear coordinate system was used to analyze …

Background: Many specialized cells in adult organs acquire a state of cell cycle arrest and quiescence through unknown mechanisms. Our limited understanding of mammalian cell cycle arrest is derived primarily from cell culture models. Adult mammalian cardiomyocytes, a classic example of cell cycle arrested cells, exit the cell cycle postnatally and remain in an arrested state for the life of the organism. Cardiomyocytes can be induced to re-enter the cell cycle by YAP5SA, an active form of the Hippo signaling pathway effector YAP.

Methods: We performed clonal analyses to determine the cell cycle kinetics of YAP5SA cardiomyocytes. We also performed …

Background: The Hippo pathway effector YAP (Yes-associated protein) plays an essential role in cardiomyocyte proliferation and heart regeneration. In response to physiological changes, YAP moves in and out of the nucleus. The pathophysiological mechanisms regulating YAP subcellular localization after myocardial infarction remain poorly defined.

Methods: We identified YAP acetylation at site K265 by in vitro acetylation followed by mass spectrometry analysis. We used adeno-associated virus to express YAP-containing mutations that either abolished acetylation (YAP-K265R) or mimicked acetylation (YAP-K265Q) and studied how acetylation regulates YAP subcellular localization in mouse hearts. We generated a cell line with YAP-K265R mutation and investigated the …

Changes in epigenetic processes such as histone acetylation are proposed as key events influencing cancer cell function and the initiation and progression of pediatric brain tumors. Valproic acid (VPA) is an antiepileptic drug that acts partially by inhibiting histone deacetylases (HDACs) and could be repurposed as an epigenetic anticancer therapy. Here, we show that VPA reduced medulloblastoma (MB) cell viability and led to cell cycle arrest. These effects were accompanied by enhanced H3K9 histone acetylation (H3K9ac) and decreased expression of the MYC oncogene. VPA impaired the expansion of MB neurospheres enriched in stemness markers and reduced MYC while increasing TP53 …

(Missed) Opportunities To Build Solidarity: A Critical Analysis Of Spanish-English Bilingual Children’S Books, Claudia Rodriguez-Mojica, Allison Briceño

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Two-way dual language (TWDL) programs have traditionally served white and non-Black Latinx students, with limited attention to other cultures and races. This limitation can result in the erasure of Afro-Latinx culture from bilingual programs. This study explores the ways Black characters are represented in bilingual picturebooks, which can serve to perpetuate or combat anti-blackness within bilingual education. We completed a critical content analysis of Spanish-English bilingual picturebooks that include Black or Afro-Latinx characters, employing LatCrit and BlackCrit theoretical frameworks to explore how Black characters are positioned. Findings show a significant dearth of bilingual books that include Black or Afro-Latinx characters. …

Review Of: Born Amish: Life Before The Ex-Communication—Ann Stoltzfus Taylor, Amy Schlabach Jan 2025

Review Of: Born Amish: Life Before The Ex-Communication—Ann Stoltzfus Taylor, Amy Schlabach

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

The account begins on the night of the author’s birth. Ann Stoltzfus Taylor was the first child born to her parents, Gid and Lizzie Stoltzfus, a well-known Amish couple living near Intercourse, Pennsylvania. Stoltzfus Taylor gives us a brief history of the home she grew up in, as well as introducing us to her family. Various aunts, uncles, and grandparents are described, along with memories associated with each person. She writes about her great-grandfather, nicknamed “Wild Gid,” who apparently was not a model Amishman. The chapter ends with a few stories of tragedies and stories of fun and bonding with …

Review Of: A Road Less Travelled; Going Back To My Roots; And Traveling Solo But Never Alone—Christopher Petrovich, Robert Alexander, Danny Kohlar, Darrell Yoder

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

People that are interested in joining the Amish or Mennonites are often referred to as “seekers.” And such they are, though in a sense we are all seekers, looking for that better country. It is a mistake to think that all seekers are the same, for their personalities, motivations, and “position on the road” are all different. [First paragraph.]

Review Of: Women Talking [Film]—Sarah Polley, Rebecca Janzen Jan 2025

Review Of: Women Talking [Film]—Sarah Polley, Rebecca Janzen

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Women Talking (directed by Sarah Polley) is a film that was released in 2022 and is based on Miriam Toews’ 2018 novel of the same name. Both the film and the novel are, in turn, based on events that took place in the early 2000s in Manitoba Colony, Bolivia, where Old Colony Mennonite men raped and assaulted women and girls in their own community. This review contextualizes the movie by explaining Old Colony Mennonite beliefs, religious practices, and migrations, and then it summarizes the film and offers some thoughts about outsiders’ fascination with the film. Review Of: Fooling With The Amish: Amish Mafia, Entertaining Fakery, And The Evolution Of Reality Tv—Dirk Eitzen, Stewart M. Hoover Jan 2025

Review Of: Fooling With The Amish: Amish Mafia, Entertaining Fakery, And The Evolution Of Reality Tv—Dirk Eitzen, Stewart M. Hoover

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

In a way, this book takes on a rather banal and straightforward task: a scholarly account of the very curious phenomenon known as “Amish Reality Television.” This genre is an easy mark for critique by the serious-minded scholar or observer of contemporary religion. These programs, including Amish in the City, Breaking Amish, Return to Amish, and Amish Mafia (there are others) are far from authentic representations of their subject matter, and for anyone who knows much about Amish or Pennsylvania German culture, the poetic license of these productions is obvious. Amish culture and life have always been open to this …

Riding The Wave: Tech Tsunami'S Rhetoric Enables Plain Anabaptist Adopters, Cory Anderson Jan 2025

Riding The Wave: Tech Tsunami'S Rhetoric Enables Plain Anabaptist Adopters, Cory Anderson

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Arguably, no book has shaped plain Anabaptist discourse about technology more than Gary Miller’s Tech Tsunami. Since its 2016 publication, the book has achieved near-canonical status within certain Conservative and Old Order Anabaptist circles, particularly among business owners wrestling with technology adoption. The book’s influence extends beyond the original text—an audiobook and a youth edition (Tech Talk, 2021) circulate widely, discussion groups form around its ideas, and its vocabulary infiltrates conversations about church rules. The book’s success builds on Miller’s existing platform; his works Kingdom Focused Finances, Church Matters, and Life in a Global Village helped establish him as a …

Symposium Review: Virtually Amish: Preserving Community At The Internet’S Margins—Lindsay Ems, Harry Argo, Dan Raber, Jonathan Stoll

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Ems’s book, “Virtually Amish,” is a significant contribution to research on Amish survival and how the Amish continue to endure the influence of modernized technological capitalism on their faith, values, and way of life. The underlying questions address not only whether increased exposure to digitization will accelerate their assimilation but, more significantly, how they are able to address such challenges. Migration, Trauma, And Tweeback: Perspectives On Russian Mennonite Identity In Elina Penner’S Novel Nachtbeeren, Berit Jany

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, a group of about 2.5 million Russia Germans immigrated to Germany, benefiting from the German law that recognizes citizenship to ethnic Germans who arrived in the territory as late ethnic Germans resettlers. Including their children, this subset of Germany’s population now numbers about 3.5 million, and about 350.000 Russia Germans have a Mennonite background. Of the 500.000 Plautdietsch-speaking people worldwide, about 200,000 of them live in Germany. In her debut novel, Nachtbeeren, the author Elina Penner illuminates the everyday life of German Mennonites from the Soviet Union and the successor …

Amish Shwitzer: An Old Order Contact Language, Anja Hasse, Guido Seiler Jan 2025

Amish Shwitzer: An Old Order Contact Language, Anja Hasse, Guido Seiler

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

There is relatively little linguistic research on the language spoken by the Swiss Amish community of Adams County, IN. The language is remarkable for various reasons. First, it is a kind of a mixed language with closely related parental languages which has so far not been found elsewhere in the languages of the world. Second, it is an example of a complex linguistic inner-Amish separation. While the convergence of Amish Shwitzer towards Pennsylvania Dutch grammar is caused by intense contact between Swiss and Pennsylvania Dutch-speaking Amish, the retention of Bernese German features inherited by the ancestors of the modern-day Swiss …

Latine Immigrant Survivors Of Sexual Assault: Clinical Considerations For Aid And Empowerment, Jasmine Pochini

Counseling Psychology | Master's Theses

This thesis project attempts to ascertain the impact of sexual assault on Latine immigrants in the United States with the aid of a literature review and subsequent manual of clinical and sociocultural recommendations. The historical and political background of immigration in the U.S. is discussed, providing a background for the difficulties that Latine immigrants have faced for decades. All facets of immigration are explored, as well as the hostility that many immigrants face due to anti-immigrant sentiment. This combined with the acculturation process proves to have drastic effects on mental health. Sexual assault is then explored, identifying background and statistical …
