As Text-to-Image (T2I) models become more advanced, they face a fundamental challenge—balancing conflicting alignment goals such as faithfulness vs. artistic freedom, realism vs. stylization, and verifiability vs. creativity. Existing alignment methods often optimize for one objective at the cost of another, leading to inconsistencies in AI-generated images.
/="/">
/="/">In our latest work, YinYang-Align, we introduce a benchmarking framework to systematically evaluate these trade-offs and propose Contradictory Alignment Optimization (CAO)—a multi-objective extension of Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) that enables models to navigate competing alignment goals more effectively.

Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging Based Calf Muscle Perfusion And Machine Learning In Peripheral Artery Disease, Bijen Khagi, Tatiana Belousova, Christina M Short, Addison A Taylor, Jean Bismuth, Dipan J Shah, Gerd Brunner

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) remains underdiagnosed and undertreated and is associated with an increased risk for adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Imaging provides an approach to identifying patients with PAD. However, the role of integrating imaging with machine learning to identify PAD patients and potentially assess disease severity remains understudied. A total of 56 participants, including 36 PAD patients with intermittent claudication and 20 matched controls, underwent contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (CE-MRI) calf muscle perfusion scanning. CE-MRI-derived dynamic muscle perfusion maps were developed to quantify alterations of the microvascular circulation in the calf muscles based on voxel contrast enhancement. These dynamic muscle …

Photocathodes From Aerobic Oxidation Of Tellurorhodamines, Amelia Jellison

Dissertations and Theses

Growing environmental concerns have facilitated an increased need for renewable energy. Solar energy is an excellent source of renewable energy, however current dye-sensitized solar cells are not efficient enough for commercial use. This thesis attempts to create a novel dye-sensitized cathode to increase the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells.

Dye-sensitized cathodes could lower the energy level on the cathode and thereby increase the overall efficiency of the solar cell, however until now it has not been attempted. A tellurorhodamine dye with a mesityl ring was chosen as the dye for its ability to aerobically oxidize in the presence of light. …

Genomic structural variants (SVs) are a major source of genetic diversity in humans. Here, through long-read sequencing of 945 Han Chinese genomes, we identify 111,288 SVs, including 24.56% unreported variants, many with predicted functional importance. By integrating human population-level phenotypic and multi-omics data as well as two humanized mouse models, we demonstrate the causal roles of two SVs: one SV that emerges at the common ancestor of modern humans, Neanderthals, and Denisovans in GSDMD for bone mineral density and one modern-human-specific SV in WWP2 impacting height, weight, fat, craniofacial phenotypes and immunity. Our results suggest that the GSDMD SV could …

Neuronal Network Activation Induced By Forniceal Deep Brain Stimulation In Mice, Bin Tang, Zhenyu Wu, Qi Wang, Jianrong Tang

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background: The fimbria-fornix is a nerve fiber bundle that connects various structures of the limbic system in the brain and plays a key role in cognition. It has become a major target of deep brain stimulation (DBS) to treat memory impairment in both dementia patients and animal models of neurological diseases. Previously, we have reported the beneficial memory effects of chronic forniceal DBS in mouse models of intellectual disability disorders. In Rett syndrome and CDKL5 deficiency disorder models, DBS strengthens hippocampal synaptic plasticity, reduces dentate inhibitory transmission or increases adult hippocampal neurogenesis that aids memory. However, the underlying neuronal circuitry …

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

In 2018, library faculty at a large, public land grant university formed a working group tasked with assessing the information needs of graduate students and implementing action plans to support this user population. From the beginning, the librarians recognized that graduate students are not a homogeneous group. Desiring a more nuanced understanding of these students, they held focus groups in 2019 to explore students’ experiences with navigating graduate school and, more specifically, the University library. One sub-group of particular interest to them was international graduate students, who make up a sizable percentage of the graduate student population on campus. International …

Projections And Perceptions-Editoria Comments. Places, Daniel Jacobson

The Geographical Bulletin

I grew up in Newark, New Jersey. I loved its streets and its people. I loved the public schools, the No. 13 trolley that carried passengers down Clinton Avenue to the downtown area, to Bamberger's, Hahnes' and Kresge's, to the Newark Museum and especially the public library. For eighteen or more years I had never been outside of New Jersey or New York, but in the library I found the world. And I could float in my imagination to the Indian sub-continent, to China and Japan, to the great European capitals, to Oceania and beyond. I found a great fascination …

Exploring The Connection Between Rna Splicing And Intellectual Disability, Anthony Caputo, Ashleigh E. Schaffer Feb 2025

Exploring The Connection Between Rna Splicing And Intellectual Disability, Anthony Caputo, Ashleigh E. Schaffer

Faculty Scholarship

Intellectual disability (ID) is a broad diagnostic category that encompasses individuals with impaired cognitive ability. While these disorders have heterogeneous causes, recent developments in next-generation sequencing (NGS) are revealing the prevalence of genetic etiologies. In particular, germline mutations in genes that affect RNA splicing are increasingly common causes of ID disorders. Research to elucidate the functional relationship between splicing and neurodevelopment is critical since molecular therapeutics require a nuanced understanding of the pathological mechanism. In this review, we first summarize the trends that have led to the discovery of the RNA splicing–ID relationship, then discuss recent progress and future directions …

Kickbacks In The Healthcare Space: Resolving The Causation Split, Joseph M. Hill Feb 2025

Kickbacks In The Healthcare Space: Resolving The Causation Split, Joseph M. Hill

Catholic University Law Review

A three circuit split has left federal courts around the country struggling to find and apply the correct causation standard when faced with a False Claims Act suit which has been brought by way of the Anti-Kickback Statute. Uncertainty was created after one court found a lesser standard of causation was acceptable between the kickback and the false claim, while other courts found “but for” causation was required for these cases to survive. This comment analyzes the decisions of the relevant courts, as well as the common law origins of the False Claims Act, canons of construction, as well as …
