Cis-Regulation And Evolution Of Genes Involved In Immunity, Changxu Fan Feb 2025

Cis-Regulation And Evolution Of Genes Involved In Immunity, Changxu Fan

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The mammalian genome contains ~20,000 genes. Some of these genes are essential for the cellular processes of most, if not all, cells, and are therefore expressed across a variety of cell types. Other genes, however, are involved in specialized processes such as defense against pathogens. These immunity-related genes are often only expressed in immune cells that require them to function. My dissertation addresses how the expression of immunity-related genes is regulated, with the rationale that such knowledge will inform the development of therapies to turn on/off immune genes, as a way of activating/inhibiting the effector functions of immune cells, which …

Exploring The Incidence Of Synthetic Versus Non-Synthetic Cannabinoid-Induced Psychosis: A Scoping Review, Ruaa Al-Juboori, Zachariah Francois, Precious Patrick Edet, Marie Barnard Feb 2025

Exploring The Incidence Of Synthetic Versus Non-Synthetic Cannabinoid-Induced Psychosis: A Scoping Review, Ruaa Al-Juboori, Zachariah Francois, Precious Patrick Edet, Marie Barnard

Faculty and Student Publications

Cannabinoids, including synthetic and non-synthetic variants, are associated with diverse mental health outcomes including the development of psychotic symptoms. While non-synthetic cannabinoids such as THC are well-studied, the stronger affinity of synthetic cannabinoids for cannabinoid receptors may lead to more severe and unpredictable health outcomes, including acute psychosis. Therefore, the objective of this scoping review is to investigate if the literature reported differences in the incidence of synthetic cannabinoid-induced psychosis versus non-synthetic cannabinoid-induced psychosis and quantify these differences if present. Following the JBI guidelines for scoping reviews, we will conduct a literature search across multiple databases including PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The Last Interglacial (∼129,000–116,000 years ago) provides key insights into temperate European vegetation dynamics before significant anthropogenic impacts. Using LOVE (Local Vegetation Estimates) and REVEALS (Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance from Large Sites) models, this study reconstructs vegetation patterns across local (∼9 km²) and regional (∼100 km²) scales. Local landscapes presented a heterogeneous mosaic, with averages of 17 % open vegetation, 21 % closed forests, and 63 % light woodlands, reflecting high fine-scale heterogeneity. Importantly, weak local-regional correlations highlight the importance of localised drivers. Longitude and, to a lesser extent, precipitation explained some variation in local vegetation openness, but heterogeneity …

Rutledge, Middleton, Heyward, And Lynch: Founding Fathers From South Carolina, Clayton Alexander Moss

Masters Theses

The Declaration of Independence is one of the most important documents in history. It established the American colonies as independent states, and its philosophical ideals regarding freedom guided the United States and other nations worldwide. Fifty-six men signed the Declaration as representatives of their respective colonies, and each contributed to this historic document and the Revolution. The four signatories representing South Carolina, Thomas Lynch Jr., Arthur Middleton, Edward Rutledge, and Thomas Heyward Jr., were a group of young men who contributed their names and ideals during the American Revolution and the work they did before, during, and after the Second …

Essays In Industrial Organization, Nilesh Kumar Jain Feb 2025

Essays In Industrial Organization, Nilesh Kumar Jain

Doctoral Theses

This thesis contains three chapters on industrial organization, covering two distinct topics. Chapters 1 and 2 examine the impact of firm owner's corruption on the organization, while Chapter 3 analyzes the market dynamics of a two-sided newspaper market.\medskip The first chapter investigates the agency conflict that arises when the principal (the owner) of a firm is involved in corruption. A corruptible principal has an incentive to conceal his or her illegal activities, while the agent (CEO or manager), due to their information advantage, is in a position to monitor this corruption, thus creating an agency conflict. We show that such …

Monroe Work's Contributions To Public Sociology, Leonard A. Steverson, Gabrielle S. Kelly, Emma R. Torres

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

Abstract

Monroe Work was a Chicago School trained sociologist, criminologist, and researcher who, despite not being well-known in the social sciences, produced a body of research that is exemplified in what is now known as public sociology. Work was associated with prominent sociologist and activist W.E.B. Du Bois while working in Savannah, Georgia, and later with Booker T. Washington, with whom he worked at the Tuskegee Institute, heading the records and research department. Work was a talented researcher who worked behind the scenes with both Du Bois and Washington to provide needed research in a time of intense racial conflict. …

Connectomic Dysfunctions Underlying Cognitive Impairment In Alcohol Use Disorder And The Link To Alzheimer's Disease, Graham Warner Feb 2025

Connectomic Dysfunctions Underlying Cognitive Impairment In Alcohol Use Disorder And The Link To Alzheimer's Disease, Graham Warner

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) are two disorders associated with a degraded life quality, high mortality, and poor prognosis. Recent evidence suggests that AUD is a risk factor for AD though the exact relationship between the two disorders is unknown. This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between these disorders by determining which patterns of functional connectivity are associated with cognitive decline in AUD and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a cognitive pathology which frequently precedes dementia. Both resting-state and task-based fMRI data collected from AUD, MCI, and healthy control (HC) participants were used in this study. The …

Cherokee Removal Along The Trail, 1838-1839: Separating Fact From Fiction, John Norman Patterson Feb 2025

Cherokee Removal Along The Trail, 1838-1839: Separating Fact From Fiction, John Norman Patterson

Masters Theses

The misinformation and misunderstandings concerning Cherokee Indian removal has resulted from how subsequent generations of historians and Cherokees have talked and written about it. The historiography of Indian removal is quite extensive but with respect to Cherokee removal not so much because most of the original documents kept by the Cherokees unexplainably disappeared in the nineteenth century. The drought of 1837-1838 was used as an excuse by John Ross and Lewis Ross to insist that the northern route be used to remove the remaining Cherokees to Indian Territory. Evidence presented clearly demonstrates that both men sought to enrich themselves at …

Implementation Of Endotracheal Tube Cuff Manometry In The Operating Room: A Quality Improvement Project, Brianna Baker, Elisha Ross, Madelyn Wilke Feb 2025

Implementation Of Endotracheal Tube Cuff Manometry In The Operating Room: A Quality Improvement Project, Brianna Baker, Elisha Ross, Madelyn Wilke

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Student Projects

Background & Review of Literature: An endotracheal tube (ETT) is a device utilized during general anesthesia to secure the airway, providing a means for mechanical ventilation. The ETT features an inflatable cuff that ensures a tracheal seal and prevents complications. Cuff inflation pressure is monitored by manual palpation or a manometer. The AG Cuffill syringe is a manometer device used to measure ETT cuff pressure. The recommended ETT cuff pressure is 20 to 30 cmH2O. Deviations from the recommended range can lead to complications, escalating hospital costs, and compromising patient outcomes. Washington University School of Medicine’s (WUSM) Department …

Increasing Awareness And Use Of The Emergency Manual In The Operating Room, Joshua Danback, Annie Depenaloza, Logan Johnston

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Student Projects

Background and Review of Literature: Operating room emergency manuals function as cognitive aids, facilitating evidence-based treatment, error reduction, and better patient outcomes in diverse patient care and equipment-related emergencies. A concerning amalgam of stress, infrequent occurrence, and lack of standardized response hinders anesthesia providers’ practical experience during unexpected crises, potentially leading to errors and safety concerns.

Purpose: The purpose is to increase anesthesia providers’ utilization of the digital Stanford Emergency Manual (SEM).

Methods: All anesthesia providers at the project sites were invited to complete pre-intervention and post-intervention surveys throughout the project timeline. Surveys assessed participants’ awareness of the digital …

Association Between Combined Oral Contraceptive Prescription And Cervical Artery Dissection: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Robert J. Trager, Catherine P. Haering Feb 2025

Association Between Combined Oral Contraceptive Prescription And Cervical Artery Dissection: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Robert J. Trager, Catherine P. Haering

Faculty Scholarship

Background: To date, research has identified positive associations between combined oral contraceptives (COCs) and adverse vascular events, however, evidence regarding the possible association with cervical artery dissection (CeAD) remains limited. We tested the hypothesis of a positive association between COCs and CeAD within one year following COC initiation compared to matched controls initiating intrauterine devices (IUDs), as measured by risk ratio (RR). Methods: We queried de-identified United States health records data (TriNetX, Inc.) from 2014 to 2024 for females aged 15–50 years without previous cerebrovascular disease or CeAD, creating mutually exclusive cohorts initiating either COCs or IUDs. We used propensity …

Applicable And Generalizable Machine Learning For Intelligent Welding In Automotive Manufacturing, Peng Edward Wang, Xijia Zhao Feb 2025

Applicable And Generalizable Machine Learning For Intelligent Welding In Automotive Manufacturing, Peng Edward Wang, Xijia Zhao

Faculty Scholarship

This review paper examines the application and challenges of machine learning (ML) in intelligent welding processes within the automotive industry, focusing on resistance spot welding (RSW) and laser welding. RSW is predominant in body-in-white assembly, while laser welding is critical for electric vehicle battery packs due to its precision and compatibility with dissimilar materials. The paper categorizes ML applications into three key areas: sensing, in-process decision-making, and post-process optimization. It reviews supervised learning models for defect detection and weld quality prediction, unsupervised learning for feature extraction and data clustering, and emerging generalizable ML approaches like transfer learning and federated learning …

Moral Positioning In The South China Sea Disputes Between The Philippines And China, Eryan Ramadhani Feb 2025

Moral Positioning In The South China Sea Disputes Between The Philippines And China, Eryan Ramadhani

Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

For the past two decades, disputes between the Philippines and China over the South China Sea (SCS) have experienced continuous escalation. Benigno Aquino III filed an arbitration case against China. This legal success was later overturned by Rodrigo Duterte in exchange for closer relations with China. However, his decision did not cease hostility in the SCS. Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. then brought the Philippines back on legal track and steered the country closer to the United States, which further heightened tensions. Built on this background, this article intends to explain the unceasing escalation in the SCS using Positioning Theory (PT). This …

Automated Blood Glucose Reminders In The Intraoperative Setting, Christopher Posey, Zeinab Halo, Emily Mueth

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Student Projects

Background and Review of Literature: Maintaining optimal blood glucose (BG) levels in patients with diabetes (PWD) undergoing surgery is crucial to prevent perioperative complications. Anesthesia providers are expected to adhere to established guidelines for monitoring BG levels in PWD during surgery. However, ensuring consistent adherence to these guidelines remains a challenge.

Purpose: This quality improvement (QI) project aimed to investigate the effect of automated BG reminders on anesthesia provider adherence to an intraoperative BG monitoring guideline for surgical PWD.

Methods: A QI project was conducted at Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH) over three months. The population of interest was surgical patients with …
