The Modern Gothic: Examining Humanity’S Relationship With Technology In Black Mirror’S Be Right Back, Ana Radojevic May 2025

The Modern Gothic: Examining Humanity’S Relationship With Technology In Black Mirror’S Be Right Back, Ana Radojevic

English

The Gothic genre, since its beginning, has been a reflection to society's fears and anxieties towards cultural and technological shifts. This thesis critically examines how Netflix's "Black Mirror" episode "Be Right Back" continues the Gothic tradition by reflecting contemporary fears of humanity's complex relationship with technology. Through an analysis of the traditional Gothic elements: haunting and death, the supernatural, and the uncanny-- "Black Mirror" is placed in the Gothic genre identifying fears of artificial intelligence and human identity. The episode's portrayal of an AI surrogate for a dead boyfriend, the episode is a cautionary tale about the limitations of technology …

Dwelling At The Gates Of Difference: The Intersection Of Beowulf, American Politics, And Monsters, Emma Rennard May 2025

Dwelling At The Gates Of Difference: The Intersection Of Beowulf, American Politics, And Monsters, Emma Rennard

English

Many political scientists, legal scholars, and American citizens have found themselves dedicating a great deal of time to asking why American politics has become so largely polarized over the last 10 years. We are seeing more than ever political acts of violence, families and friendships dissolved over political disagreements. We are witnessing the liquidation of civility in American politics, with a staple of current political debates being personal insults and aggression. Attitudes towards women have become more hostile and negative, attitudes towards transgender Americans have become more disparaging and dangerous. These political opponents become scapegoats and are dehumanized and politically …

Perceptions Of Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy, Haley Bowman May 2025

Perceptions Of Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy, Haley Bowman

Psychology

This research project tests how educational materials influence individuals’ perceptions of ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP). Previous literature indicates that educational materials shape perceptions of credibility. The hypothesis predicts that education will enhance positive perceptions.

This study recruited participants from Sona Systems and Prolific, with 924 individuals completing the study. The questionnaire gathered demographic information, assessed drug use history, and measured participants’ beliefs about the causes of depression. Participants then evaluated treatment credibility by responding to open-ended questions, the Treatment Adherence/Acceptability Scale (TAAS), the Credibility/Expectancy Questionnaire (CEQ), and the KAP credibility questionnaire.

The results indicate that education does not consistently improve perceptions …

Actitudes Lingüísticas Hacia El Español En Los Entornos Médicos Del Estado De Nueva York, Leann K. Nicholas May 2025

Actitudes Lingüísticas Hacia El Español En Los Entornos Médicos Del Estado De Nueva York, Leann K. Nicholas

Languages, Literatures & Cultures

In sociolinguistics, language attitudes refer to perceptions, opinions, or beliefs about a language or language variety and its speakers. These attitudes often reflect and reinforce ideologies that favor a dominant or standard language while stigmatizing minority or non-standard languages. New York State is a uniquely multilingual region encompassing both highly urban and rural areas. Its cultural and linguistic composition has been changing rapidly, including a growing Spanish-speaking population. Despite this shift, a gap exists in research on language attitudes toward Spanish-speaking individuals in New York’s healthcare settings. Healthcare is not a universal experience, and previous studies have shown that unaddressed …

Mental Health Advocates, Lawmakers Discuss Involuntary Commitment Expansion, Joshua T. Stone May 2025

Mental Health Advocates, Lawmakers Discuss Involuntary Commitment Expansion, Joshua T. Stone

Communication

New York has made it easier to involuntarily hospitalize people with severe mental illness as part of the state budget signed at the Capitol in early May by Gov. Kathy Hochul. State law previously allowed people with severe mental illness to be involuntarily hospitalized if two physicians determined they pose a threat to themselves or others. The updated law sets a standard to include people who are deemed unwilling or unable to support their basic needs, including food, shelter and medical care, due to their mental illness. However, opponents of the updated law say it could be misused to involuntarily …

Juror Decision-Making In Context, Kassandra Jovellanos May 2025

Juror Decision-Making In Context, Kassandra Jovellanos

Criminal Justice

The United States criminal justice system was designed to be one of fairness, where everyone is equal in the eyes of the law. However, that does not seem to be case, and one instance of this is how a defendant’s gender identity influences juror decision. Much literature exists on juror reaction to the cisgender binary, yet there is a gap in research on how juries react to transgender defendants and how pretrial media exposure interacts with this effect. This study aims to answer this question, as well as look into the interaction of pretrial publicity on juror decision when still …

Cobenfy(Xanomeline/Trospium) Vs. Clozapine For Treatment-Resistant Schizophrenia, Harmann Singh, Akash M. Patel, Abdullah Noory, Kush C. Patel, Simran Gandhi

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Background: Treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) poses significant therapeutic challenges. Although clozapine remains the gold-standard pharmacologic treatment for TRS, its clinical utility is hampered by severe side effects and intensive monitoring requirements. KarXT (Cobenfy), a combination of xanomeline and trospium chloride, represents a novel antipsychotic approach by targeting muscarinic M1/M4 receptors instead of dopamine D2 pathways.

Hypothesis: KarXT offers comparable efficacy to clozapine with a more favorable safety and tolerability profile, making it a viable alternative for patients with TRS.

Methods: A systematic review was conducted to identify studies from 2015–2025 evaluating KarXT in schizophrenia. Sources included PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, FDA databases, ICER …

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Background:

Preterm infants, especially those ≤32 weeks' gestational age (GA) are at increased risk of vision and hearing loss. Risks of both vision and hearing loss can be ameliorated and in some cases prevented by conscientious screening, follow up and treatment. Universally, infants ≤32 weeks are cared for in neonatal intensive care units and there is considerable confidence that screenings and treatment occur according to established guidelines. At hospital discharge, follow up responsibility shifts to infant caretakers likely resulting in reduced compliance.

Objective:

We aimed to determine if preterm infants at risk for vision and hearing loss, attended follow up …

Reviewing The Effect Of Antiplatelet Therapy On Lumbar Puncture Complications, John Andre Socci May 2025

Reviewing The Effect Of Antiplatelet Therapy On Lumbar Puncture Complications, John Andre Socci

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Reviewing The Effect of Antiplatelet Therapy on Lumbar Puncture Complications aims to assess literature that discusses the possible risks of undergoing lumbar puncture while on antiplatelet therapy. Lumbar punctures offer vital information that can help guide making accurate diagnosis and creating appropriate treatment plans. However, a large portion of the population is on antiplatelet therapy for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease prevention. While there are many benefits to being on these medicines, patients are at increased risk for bleeding. Thus the clinical question as to whether or not proceed with lumbar puncture on patients taking antiplatelet therapy involves weighing risks and …

The Impact Of Emergency Room Overcrowding On The Incidence Of Healthcare-Acquired Infections Among Patients, Hayya Ali May 2025

The Impact Of Emergency Room Overcrowding On The Incidence Of Healthcare-Acquired Infections Among Patients, Hayya Ali

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Emergency department (ED) visits are vital components of healthcare delivery, serving as the primary site for acute medical care, particularly for individuals with urgent medical needs. The ED is among the most crowded hospital units. The fast-paced setting and over-crowdedness of an emergency room have become the reality of every hospital across the United States. Overcrowding causes problems for patients and staff, which include the risk of contracting healthcare-acquired infections. This is due to several factors that in most cases lead to an increase in the number of people within the ED, an increase in mortality and morbidity, and a …

The Correlation Between A Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase Deficiency In Autism Spectrum Disorder Patients And The Presence Of Mental Health Disorders, Hinal Joshi, Andrea Iannuzzelli May 2025

The Correlation Between A Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase Deficiency In Autism Spectrum Disorder Patients And The Presence Of Mental Health Disorders, Hinal Joshi, Andrea Iannuzzelli

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

• Currently little literature exists on connection between Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) deficiency and mental health disorders

• Reduced enzyme activity associated with certain MTHFR variants contributes to altered folate metabolism, elevated homocysteine levels, and disrupted DNA methylation, all of which are implicated in mental health disorders

• Identifying genetic risk factors could facilitate earlier diagnosis and intervention, leading to improved outcomes

• Relevant results could help reduce stigma and promote greater understanding of challenges faced by patients on the spectrum

Child Sex Trafficking In Pediatrics: From Screening To Comprehensive Care, Victoria Shwe, Tracy Lin, Nicole M. Leopardi

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Child sex trafficking is a significant issue in New Jersey, with minors making up 22% of trafficking victims in 2023. While screening tools exist to identify at-risk youth, there is a major gap in understanding the steps healthcare providers should take after identification to ensure appropriate care, support, and referrals. Current research highlights the lack of data on the use of trafficking screening tools and the absence of standardized post-screening protocols. Most pediatricians rely on referrals to social services or law enforcement, yet limited coordination between healthcare providers and these agencies complicates effective care. The shortage of child abuse pediatric …
