The French Connection: The Exponential Growth Of Rhode Island Women's Basketball, Mark C. Radigan May 2025

The French Connection: The Exponential Growth Of Rhode Island Women's Basketball, Mark C. Radigan

Senior Honors Projects

Since the arrival of Head Coach Tammi Reiss and Associate Head Coach Adeniyi Amadou to Kingston in 2019, the University of Rhode Island Women’s Basketball program has emerged from mid-major obscurity to become a regional and conference juggernaut with a reputation for developing young women on the court and in life. Many factors have contributed to this meteoric rise, but one that stands out is the program’s reliance on international recruiting to close the skill gap with other mid-major programs, with a particular focus on recruiting within France. This project aimed to highlight the impact of this recruitment strategy on …

How Do Simulated Phishing Attacks Impact Cybersecurity Awareness And The Enhancement Of Security Protocols Among Faculty Members In A University Environment?, Navnoor Sandhu

University Honors Program Senior Projects

Phishing attacks are cyber threats where attackers deceive users into performing actions that compromise the user’s security and benefit the attacker. In 2024 alone, phishing attacks have resulted in estimated damages of around 800 million dollars [1]. In response, many institutions have implemented internal simulated phishing attacks to enhance their employees' cybersecurity awareness. This training exercise has been proven beneficial in improving cybersecurity awareness on an enterprise scale[4]. This study aims to evaluate the potential effectiveness of a simulated phishing attack within a university setting, which is a relatively unseen practice thus far. Universities, like other secure organizations, store sensitive …

Language Development And Stuttering: Are People Who Are Fluent In More Than One Language More Likely To Stutter? Do They Stutter More In Their First Or Second Language?, Stephanie Pedraza Marin May 2025

Language Development And Stuttering: Are People Who Are Fluent In More Than One Language More Likely To Stutter? Do They Stutter More In Their First Or Second Language?, Stephanie Pedraza Marin

University Honors Program Senior Projects

Research on bilingualism has played a key role in understanding language and cognitive processes. It has sparked ongoing debates about whether speaking more than one language enhances cognitive abilities or potentially limits these capacities. One behavior often examined in this context is stuttering, which has been studied in relation to bilingualism as far back as 1937. While some studies report no difference in stuttering rates between bilinguals and monolinguals, others suggest that bilinguals may be more prone to stuttering. The current study sought to further explore this issue through an online survey examining the experiences of bilingual and monolingual English …

Who Was Skull #0025336? A Forensic Anthropological Analysis Of Human Remains, Evelyn R. Wendland May 2025

Who Was Skull #0025336? A Forensic Anthropological Analysis Of Human Remains, Evelyn R. Wendland

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Biological anthropology identifies human remains to learn more about the individual or the ancient community from which they originate. Two subdisciplines of biological Anthropology that focus on osteology—the study of bones— are Forensic Anthropology and Biorchaeology. Forensic anthropology is the study of human remains associated with the legal process. They specifically analyze remains from post-1950. Biorchaeology also looks at human remains but in a historical and/or archaeological context. As osteologists analyze human remains, they typically try to create a biological profile. The biological profile includes classifications of ethnicity (ancestry), age, sex, and stature, as well as aspects of pathology and …

Student Veterans' Attitudes Towards Mental Health Issues And Treatments, Elicia S. Ramu May 2025

Student Veterans' Attitudes Towards Mental Health Issues And Treatments, Elicia S. Ramu

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Mental health concerns with United States veterans have been a pervasive issue for decades. The changes and evolving nature of the mental health field, including terminology and diagnoses, are believed to discourage veterans from reaching out and asking for help when it is needed most. However, these are not the only reasons why veterans choose not to seek out treatment. It has been found that other reasons include the stigma towards mental health alongside financial, external costs, and hidden costs of treatment. The following study has been conducted to understand the various barriers that hinder student veterans with mental health …

Understanding Loneliness In The Digital Age: Implications Of Social Media Use, Ryan D. Shinazy May 2025

Understanding Loneliness In The Digital Age: Implications Of Social Media Use, Ryan D. Shinazy

Despite the promise of greater connectivity through digital platforms, loneliness remains prevalent among young adults. This study investigates the impact of different types of social media use on loneliness through an experimental design—an uncommon but needed approach in a field dominated by correlational studies. Participants (n=17) were randomly assigned to one of five conditions: active use with positive feedback, active use with negative feedback, broadcasting with positive feedback, broadcasting with negative feedback, and passive scrolling. Each participant interacted with a mock social media platform tailored to the University of Northern Colorado community. Loneliness was assessed using the Revised UCLA Loneliness …

Extralegal Factors Influencing Judicial Perceptions Of Defendants With Mental Illness, Hailey Erdbruegger May 2025

Extralegal Factors Influencing Judicial Perceptions Of Defendants With Mental Illness, Hailey Erdbruegger

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The United States has one of the highest prison populations in the world. This means millions of individuals are either incarcerated or under other forms of supervision by the criminal justice system at any one given time. All those millions of individuals had to move through the U.S. criminal courts and thus engage with multiple forms of courtroom participants along the way. Of those millions coming through the system, many have either been diagnosed with a mental illness, or have self-reported having a mental illness. This makes the personal beliefs, stigmas, and biases of the previously mentioned courtroom participants regarding …

Irish Identity Politics In James Joyce, Cailin Carragher May 2025

Irish Identity Politics In James Joyce, Cailin Carragher

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Reading the works of James Joyce poses a question of what constitutes a national identity. My paper examines the different facets of creating an Irish identity, which were rejected by Stephen Dedalus and, by proxy, James Joyce. Examining self and country is one of the main themes in these works. The problem Stephen encounters is the strife between creating a postcolonial identity that either recognizes the effects of the British Empire or dismisses them entirely. Through Stephen’s development, he aligns himself with hybridity, whereas the Irish Nationalists and the Revivalists want to establish an identity stripped of all English influence. …

"A Miniature Replica Of Life": Reality, Critique, And The Burden Of Representation In Oscar Micheaux's Body And Soul, Maria Lagomarsino May 2025

"A Miniature Replica Of Life": Reality, Critique, And The Burden Of Representation In Oscar Micheaux's Body And Soul, Maria Lagomarsino

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

With the release of his controversial silent film Body and Soul (1925), filmmaker Oscar Micheaux elicited strong reactions from censors, critics, and audience members alike. While some praised the work as a triumph of Black filmmaking, others were horrified by Micheaux’s corrupt preacher storyline and supposedly negative characterizations. The creation of this film occurred during a particularly fraught period of history, which saw some Harlem Renaissance figures argue that only positive depictions deserved a place in the public discourse. With Body and Soul, however, Micheaux refused to be limited by this undue burden of representation. In this thesis, I further …

Phonetic Convergence And Speech Intelligibility, Kinza Nadeem Mughal May 2025

Phonetic Convergence And Speech Intelligibility, Kinza Nadeem Mughal

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Previous studies have indicated that phonetic convergence, in which a listener’s speech aligns with the speech of a talker they hear, can influence speech perception. The present study replicated and extended these findings by investigating whether phonetic convergence can facilitate speech intelligibility. A total of N = 140 participants, all aged 18 or older and native English speakers, completed a speech shadowing task, a speech intelligibility test, and perceptual similarity tests. This study examined whether individuals better understand their own speech compared to others’, whether shadowing improves speech intelligibility, and whether phonetic convergence is positively related to intelligibility. Results supported …

Online Racial Discrimination, Depression, Anxiety, And Sleep Disturbances Among Ethnoracially Minoritized Young Adults: The Buffering Role Of Family Support, Aamnah M. Ullah May 2025

Online Racial Discrimination, Depression, Anxiety, And Sleep Disturbances Among Ethnoracially Minoritized Young Adults: The Buffering Role Of Family Support, Aamnah M. Ullah

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

There has been a surge in young adult exposure to online racial discrimination (ORD), which is associated with impaired sleep, greater anxiety, and depression. Evidence suggests that ethnoracially minoritized college students are at increased risk for exposure to ORD. Additionally, sleep disturbances (SD) may impact the link between ORD, depression, and anxiety. Thus, this study aims to explore whether increased SDs mediate the relationship between ORD, anxiety, and depression among ethnoracially minoritized college students. This study also aims to examine whether family support (FS) moderates the indirect effect of ORD on anxiety and depression. Participants were 495 (78.6% female, mean …

Customs, Courts, And Conflict: Strengthening The Legal System In South Sudan, Anusha Sheila Aubeelack May 2025

Customs, Courts, And Conflict: Strengthening The Legal System In South Sudan, Anusha Sheila Aubeelack

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis examines the dual legal system in South Sudan and how it can be strengthened as the country transitions to a democracy. It gives a brief historical account of the evolution of the South Sudanese legal system and the current challenges posed by overlapping normative frameworks. It argues that while customary law remains deeply embedded in South Sudanese society, its co-existence with statutory law has created jurisdictional ambiguities, inconsistencies in the delivery of justice and public mistrust in state institutions. Reforms such as the drafting of the Permanent Constitution of South Sudan to harmonize both legal traditions, the formal …

The Impact Of Rumination On Wm Performance Using Emotional Stimulus, Ky King May 2025

The Impact Of Rumination On Wm Performance Using Emotional Stimulus, Ky King

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Working memory (WM) is known as a limited capacity cognitive system responsible for keeping a small amount of information in mind over a short period of time. WM is primarily studied using a change detection task with simple objects, but this method can often be insufficient in determining how emotional content can impact WM capacity (WMC). Given the understanding of WM and the gap in literature, this study aimed to test how well emotional stimuli are remembered in WM. Specifically, the current study investigated whether participants remembered emotional information (negative versus neutral content) differently, and whether individual tendency towards ruminative …

Improving Brain Health: Exercise As A Tool For Enhancing Executive Function And Reducing Stress In Older African Americans, Destiny Ellise Ramos

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Older African American (AA) adults face disproportionately higher risk of stress and Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) compared to other racial and ethnic groups, yet they remain underrepresented in intervention-based research. Previous research has suggested aerobic exercise may reduce stress and benefit executive functioning, which is among the first cognitive domains to be affected in ADRD; however, no studies to date have directly tested the impact of aerobic vs. non-aerobic exercise in older AAs at high risk for developing ADRD. The current study evaluated the effects of a group-based cardio dance fitness (CDF) exercise intervention versus a strength, flexibility, …

The Role Of Endogenous Estrogen In Effects Of Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation On Cognitive Performance, Samantha Walsh May 2025

The Role Of Endogenous Estrogen In Effects Of Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation On Cognitive Performance, Samantha Walsh

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

High-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) directly modulates brain activity, allowing the study of brain-behavior relationships in cognitive processes. However, cognitive effects of tDCS vary widely, partly due to individual differences in baseline brain activity. Estrogen levels, which fluctuate during the menstrual cycle, are known to affect cortical excitability and impact neural response to tDCS, but no research to date has examined the potential moderating role of endogenous estrogen in tDCS effects on cognition. In this study, N = 16 healthy female adults completed four sessions of a working memory (WM) task while receiving tDCS (two active sessions, two sham) …

The Gaps Between The Stories: Motherteachers And The Impact Of The Patriarchy In Prek-12 Education, Tara S. Dimattia May 2025

The Gaps Between The Stories: Motherteachers And The Impact Of The Patriarchy In Prek-12 Education, Tara S. Dimattia

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

As a secondary–level English teacher and the mother of three school-age children, I have learned that women’s knowledge and their ways of knowing (Belenky et al., 1986), specifically in relation to their roles as mothers, is marginalized in the world of PreK–12 schooling. In this qualitative study, through use of co/autoethnography (Coia & Taylor, 2013) and by way of group meetings, written reflections, and participatory arts–based data collection, I examined and documented how women’s roles as mothers impact their teaching in the patriarchal field of education, and worked to determine the ways in which women navigate this dialectical relationship in …

Women Disrupting The "Roundness" In "No Name Woman" And Sula: How Maxine Hong Kingston's And Toni Morrison's Titular Characters Combat Restrictive Communal Norms Surrounding Sex, Michelle Victoria D'Alessio May 2025

Women Disrupting The "Roundness" In "No Name Woman" And Sula: How Maxine Hong Kingston's And Toni Morrison's Titular Characters Combat Restrictive Communal Norms Surrounding Sex, Michelle Victoria D'Alessio

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis examines how Maxine Hong Kingston’s “No Name Woman,” the opening chapter of her memoir, The Woman Warrior, and Toni Morrison’s novel, Sula, portray communal perceptions of women who contradict traditional gender norms surrounding sex. The titular characters in each of these stories express their sexualities in ways deemed unfit by their people and are accordingly demonized and outcast from their communities. These characters are afforded some subtle admiration for their personal power by the artists who are portraying them, but this reverence is inevitably rescinded and replaced by the disdain of the tight-knit communities surrounding them. This tension …

In Sickness And In Work: How Organizational Identification, Health Climate, And Workaholism Relate To Employee Strains Over Time, Isabel R. Skovera May 2025

In Sickness And In Work: How Organizational Identification, Health Climate, And Workaholism Relate To Employee Strains Over Time, Isabel R. Skovera

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Organizational identification (OID) reflects an employee’s sense of belonging to their organization (Ashforth & Mael, 1989). While previous research on OID primarily highlights its positive organizational outcomes, its effects on employee well-being remain understudied. Existing studies often take a cross-sectional approach, focusing mainly on mental health and positive outcomes while overlooking organizational context and individual differences. This study addresses these gaps by examining the longitudinal relationship between OID and well-being variables (burnout, physical symptoms, job satisfaction, life satisfaction) among newly hired employees. Using a four-wave survey design with initially 585 participants (remaining N = 127) recruited through Prolific, this research …

The Monsters Are Due On Hillside Avenue: Paul Robeson And The Racialization Of The Peekskill Riots Of 1949, Joshua Dellacruz

History Honors Program

On August 27, 1949, a burning cross pierced the night sky in the quiet hills of Westchester County. As Howard Fast later recounted in Peekskill USA: There was a moment of silent cessation, and one of the men leaped up on the truck and cried, 'A cross is burning!' We could only see the glare, but the symbolic meaning was not lost upon us. In the sweet land the movement had been rounded out; the burning cross, the symbol of all that is rotten and evil in our land had blessed us. Our night was complete and we could do …

Women In The Environmental Movement: An Examination Of Maternalistic Rhetoric And Its Relationship To Modern Environmentalism In The 20th Century, Danielle Howie

History Honors Program

From 1942 to 1953, the Hooker Chemical Company decided that an abandoned canal in Niagara Falls was the perfect place to dump 22,000 tons of toxic chemical waste, a common disposal practice that was largely unregulated by the local government. The company covered the 16 acres of hazardous waste with clay and sold it to the Niagara Falls Board of Education in 1953 for one dollar. With a warning included in the property deed that mentioned the presence of chemical waste, the company was excluded from all future liability.2 In the decades to follow, a suburban community would flower around …

Iran-Contra And The Memory Of Vietnam: Human Rights, Covert Operations, And The National Security Council, Matthew Sarcinella May 2025

Iran-Contra And The Memory Of Vietnam: Human Rights, Covert Operations, And The National Security Council, Matthew Sarcinella

History Honors Program

In December of 1972, President Richard Nixon ordered the bombing of North Vietnam, beginning on December 18th and lasting until the 30th. During this period 20,000 tons of bombs were dropped, resulting in the deaths of thousands of Vietnamese. The bombings would soon be known as the “12 Days of Christmas.” Major General Richard Secord, “master of covert operations” sat back and watched as North Vietnam was nearly destroyed. There was nothing that Vietnam could do to combat the U.S. military. Being in Secord’s position, he understood better than anyone that this was far more than a mere phenomenon. For …

Using Wearable Sensors For Gait Analysis: Measurement Accuracy For Linear Measurements, Chaenaya Underwood May 2025

Using Wearable Sensors For Gait Analysis: Measurement Accuracy For Linear Measurements, Chaenaya Underwood

English

The emergence of “new media” has fundamentally reshaped human interaction, relying on algorithm-driven content saturation to shape user experiences and reinforce cognitive biases. While digital platforms offer unprecedented access to information and global connectivity, they also contribute to emotional disengagement, increased anxiety, and diminished critical thinking. “New media” often isolates individuals, encouraging passive consumption and emotional dysregulation. However, the challenge lies not in technological advancements but in society’s lack of critical engagement and effective regulation. This paper examines the misuse of new technology and its negative implications on human behavior. Incorporating evidence from journal articles, books, and personal correspondence, this …

The First Amendment On Trial: Hate Speech, Free Speech And College Campuses, Maya Rotman May 2025

The First Amendment On Trial: Hate Speech, Free Speech And College Campuses, Maya Rotman

English

This thesis examines the tension between the First Amendment’s guarantee of free speech and the harmful impact of hate speech on college campuses. As incidents of targeted, discriminatory rhetoric rise in academic settings, the need to reevaluate what constitutes protected speech has become increasingly urgent. Through legal analysis, including case law such as Brandenburg v. Ohio and Schenck v. United States, this paper argues that the Supreme Court must distinguish between constitutionally protected speech and harmful hate speech. The thesis uses contemporary case studies from college campuses across the country. It includes firsthand accounts from the University at Albany …
