Toward An Understanding Of Loneliness And Social Participation In Serious Mental Illness, Samantha B. Randolph May 2025

Toward An Understanding Of Loneliness And Social Participation In Serious Mental Illness, Samantha B. Randolph

WUSM Theses and Dissertations – All Programs

Loneliness is an immense challenge facing the majority of Americans with Serious Mental Illness. Loneliness is linked to negative outcomes, including heart disease, reduced quality of life, and early mortality. Current loneliness interventions (e.g., social skills training, social support) do not effectively address all the complex factors that lead to loneliness in this population. More work is needed, therefore, to better understand how to optimally research and prevent loneliness among individuals with Serious Mental Illness, who experience unique barriers to social integration/participation and dwell in complex settings, such as permanent supportive housing. The presented dissertation aims to address current gaps …

A Theory-Based Examination Of Factors Influencing Caregivers’ Intentions To Disclose Sickle Cell Trait Status To Their Children, Christine A. Chaba

WUSM Theses and Dissertations – All Programs

Sickle cell trait (SCT), the heterozygous form of sickle cell disease, has significant implications for health and reproductive decision-making. Timely disclosure of SCT status to children by their caregivers is critical for promoting genetic awareness and supporting informed reproductive choices. However, many caregivers delay or avoid this conversation. This study examined the psychosocial and behavioral factors influencing caregivers’ intentions to disclose SCT status to their children, guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Theory of Regret Regulation. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with 78 caregivers of Children with SCT, who completed an online survey. The study addressed …

Architecture And The Organization Of Labor At Tsegi Phase (Ad 1250-1300) Cliff Dwellings, Navajo National Monument, Katharine M. Williams

Anthropology ETDs

This study focuses on the organization of architectural labor at Betatakin and Keet Seel during the Tsegi Phase (AD 1250-1300). The goal of this project is to identify whether people worked together as households, suprahouseholds, communities, or had specialists come in to build. I document variability in architectural attributes across rooms within individual houses, which is then linked to builder choices, and thus allows for the identification of architectural products associated with discrete production groups. Builders that work together share their decisions to the extent that their output is distinct from the work of others. This project expands on traditional …

Shared Hardships Strengthen Bonds: Negative Shocks, Embeddedness, And Employee Retention, Andrew Balthrop, Hyunseok Jung May 2025

Shared Hardships Strengthen Bonds: Negative Shocks, Embeddedness, And Employee Retention, Andrew Balthrop, Hyunseok Jung

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Jarring events inspiring reflection, known as "shocks" in the literature, are the driving force in explaining changes in employee embeddedness and retention within the unfolding model of labor turnover. Substantial research effort has examined strategies for insulating valued employees from adverse shocks. However, this article provides empirical evidence that unambiguously negative shocks can increase employee retention when underlying firm and employee incentives with respect to these shocks are aligned. Using survival analysis on a unique data set of 466,236 communication records and 45,873 employment spells from 21 trucking companies, we show how equipment-related shocks tend to increase the duration of …

Returning Home: Exploring The Perceptions Of Alumni-Educators On Student-Teacher Relationships At James High School, Duwaine H. Jenkins Jr

Graduate Theses & Dissertations

Abstract

This qualitative study explored the perceptions of urban high school educators who returned to teach at the same school they once attended. The study is grounded in Wubbels et al.’s (2014) framework on teacher-student relationships, which emphasizes that strong relationships are built through repeated, reciprocal interactions. This research examined how past student experiences influence current teaching practices and relationships. Two guiding research questions framed the study: 1. How do these educators perceive their student-teacher relationships with their current students? 2. How do their past experiences as students impact those relationships? Three participants were purposefully selected based on their unique …

Not All Superheroes Wear Capes: Understanding The Lives Of Asian American Student Caregivers, Angela Ji May 2025

Not All Superheroes Wear Capes: Understanding The Lives Of Asian American Student Caregivers, Angela Ji

Educational Specialist, 2020-current

There exists an invisible army of children who sacrifice their childhoods and shoulder responsibilities expected of adults; these children are called young caregivers. Young caregivers provide significant assistance for their family on a regular basis. The existing literature shows that youth caregiving is associated with negative physical and mental health impacts that vary depending on the cultural background associated with families. It is also clear that the complexities and nuances of different ethnic groups influence the lived experiences of young caregivers. Unfortunately, there is limited information exploring racial and cultural implications of caregiving for children. This study sought to address …

Trauma-Informed Care: A Therapeutic Approach In Communication, Nicole A. Leonce May 2025

Trauma-Informed Care: A Therapeutic Approach In Communication, Nicole A. Leonce

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

As medical providers, it is crucial to use therapeutic communication when building relationships with patients. Bias, stigma, and judgment often manifest through a provider’s body language and choice of words, exacerbating patient trauma and leading to health disparities. Trauma-informed care (TIC) addresses these issues by emphasizing respect, compassion, and empathy. TIC has been extensively studied in high-income regions such as Australia, Europe and the United States, but its application in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) such as Kenya, is less understood. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and skills of nurses working in a rural …

Personhood After Dobbs, Joshua J. Craddock May 2025

Personhood After Dobbs, Joshua J. Craddock

Catholic University Law Review

Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022, unsettled questions remain about the constitutional status of unborn children. With good reason, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization did not address whether unborn children are persons within the original meaning of the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses. The historical evidence, however, is now well-established that when the Fourteenth Amendment was ratified in 1868, the word “person” had a settled public meaning that included every human being—children in the womb among them. And if unborn human beings were included within the original public meaning of “person” in …

The Human Dimension Of "Home", Robert A. Destro May 2025

The Human Dimension Of "Home", Robert A. Destro

Catholic University Law Review

All societies provide a legal framework that protects the pivotal functions of home and family. None provide a clear legal definition of “home”. Nor, this article argues, can they. “Home” is a concept rooted in the lived experience of human persons. In this article, the second in a series, the author employs the “human dimension” [HDIM] concept, initially developed by the U.S. military and later adopted by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, as the lens through which one can examine the “human element” of human rights. The framework for this analysis is the “four clusters of value-types” …

The Real Impact Of General Deterrence: Empirical Insights From The Robbery Data Of Three American Cities, Andrew W. Eichner May 2025

The Real Impact Of General Deterrence: Empirical Insights From The Robbery Data Of Three American Cities, Andrew W. Eichner

Catholic University Law Review

General deterrence theory relies on the critical assumption that prospective offenders will be deterred from committing crimes when they are aware of the apprehension and punishment of others. This idea has been reiterated across thousands of years of Western political thought and has significant implications in modern American criminal sentencing, though it has not been historically subjected to rigorous testing. The recent availability of voluminous crime data permits a deeper examination of the real impact of sentencings on crime trends and allows the opportunity for previously impossible analyses regarding the efficacy of general deterrence.

To examine whether there is evidence …

It overcomes the drawback of limited CA migration distance using small specimens, which may not replicate conditions relevant to structural applications. The spatial distributions of various constituents along the vertical casting direction were quantified through image processing technology. Results showed an approximately 12 % reduction in CA content in the top layer, while the bottom layer exhibited 12 % more CA …

Instability-Driven Phase Separation For Quantum Structure Formation In Iii-V Semiconductors, Leonid Miroshnik May 2025

Instability-Driven Phase Separation For Quantum Structure Formation In Iii-V Semiconductors, Leonid Miroshnik

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

High temperature phase instability limits the performance of III-V zinc blende semiconductor devices. A technique using an encapsulant and sacrificial layer is developed to reduce thermal degradation by group V sublimation during thermal processing of InGaAs/GaAs structures. This technique is successful in preventing As sublimation and preserving an atomically smooth surface required for surface-sensitive characterization. The degradation of the GaAsSb/InP interface by phase separation is studied. Significant interdiffusion and intermixing occurs due to the formation of a molten InSb at the interface. The intermixing is driven by phase separation and melting of the InSb interfacial layer that enhances atomic mobility. …
