Master-Level Counseling Students’ Experiences Of Completing A Group Memoir Project In A Human Development And Counseling Course, Yiying Xiong, Shuxin Cheng, Xuelin Sun

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

This study explored the experience of eight master-level students in completing a group memoir project in a Human Development and Counseling course. The project required students to read a memoir and analyze the character using human development theories with a group of students. Adopting a phenomenological approach, themes were generated to describe the students’ experiences, including making the course more engaging, contextualizing diverse human development experiences, building emotional connections with the characters, developing critical thinking about application of human development theories, enhancing learning experience with teamwork, and balancing the structure and flexibility in the project. Implications for counselor educators were …

Preparing Counselors For Practice With Immigrant Clients In Court Proceedings: Framing Required Knowledge, Attitudes, And Skills Within The Msjcc, Kalina M. Brabeck, Prachi Kene, James Geckler, Deborah S. Gonzalez Esq. May 2025

Preparing Counselors For Practice With Immigrant Clients In Court Proceedings: Framing Required Knowledge, Attitudes, And Skills Within The Msjcc, Kalina M. Brabeck, Prachi Kene, James Geckler, Deborah S. Gonzalez Esq.

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

The Multicultural Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCC; Ratts et al., 2016) provide a framework for defining the attitudes and beliefs, knowledge, skills, and action that counselors must develop to effectively work with clients across identities and social and cultural contexts. In this paper, we apply the MSJCC to counselors’ practice with immigrant clients within a specific context: immigration court proceedings. Evidence suggests that counselors may be hesitant to practice within forensic settings in general, and that training and education enhances their self-efficacy, effectiveness, and willingness to practice within these settings. Drawing on the MSJCC, we contribute to counselors’ knowledge end …

Culturally-Affirming Service-Learning For Counselors-In-Training: Child-Parent Relationship Therapy Training With Spanish-Speaking Families, Karen M. Roller, Szu-Yu Chen, Katrina Volante May 2025

Culturally-Affirming Service-Learning For Counselors-In-Training: Child-Parent Relationship Therapy Training With Spanish-Speaking Families, Karen M. Roller, Szu-Yu Chen, Katrina Volante

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

The Spanish-speaking community is the largest underserved language group in the United States. To advance social justice advocacy and multicultural humility for this language group, the field of counselor education needs to create pedagogical scaffolding for non-Spanish-speaking counselors-in-training to work with interpreters to support Spanish-speaking families, while also enhancing language-concordant training for Spanish-English bilingual counselors-in-training. We utilized a critical race research design to explore six counselors-in-training’s experience participating in service-learning through online facilitation of Child-Parent Relationship Therapy with Spanish-speaking families. Interpretative phenomenological analysis of qualitative data yielded four major themes: (a) collaboration, (b) improved awareness, (c) growth and strength, and …

Pcsk-9 Inhibitors Treatment: The Cardiovascular Disparity, Julia Lees, Seana-Pierre Williams, Tahir Razzaq, Michael B. Roberts May 2025

Pcsk-9 Inhibitors Treatment: The Cardiovascular Disparity, Julia Lees, Seana-Pierre Williams, Tahir Razzaq, Michael B. Roberts

The Journal of Integrated Primary Care

Introduction: According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and American Heart Association (AHA), cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. This phenomenon disproportionally affects the African American population, who have a 31% higher mortality rate than non-Hispanic Caucasian individuals. A retrospective review of PCSK-9 medication use, specifically in a patient population that had minimal representation in the large, landmark clinical trials, can lead to better understanding about the therapeutic potential in cardiovascular disease reduction and patient outcomes attributed to medication use. Education regarding this novel drug class, medication access and patient support, …

Langston Hughes And The “Afro-American Narrative” Tradition, Paul Haynes

Theses and Dissertations

After introducing Langston Hughes and defining Robert B. Stepto’s “Afro-American narrative” tradition, Chapter One presents a biography of Hughes from his birth in 1902 until he came under the patronage of Charlotte Osgood Mason in 1927. Chapter One also addresses the aesthetic expectations of the Harlem Renaissance and the extent to which Hughes either met or failed to meet those expectations. Chapter Two presents a reading of Not without Laughter as an integrated narrative, addressing how Hughes’s authenticating strategies and Mason’s authenticating devices evenly control the novel. Chapter Three presents a reading of Hughes’s short-story cycle, The Ways of White …

Trauma-Informed Care: A Therapeutic Communication - Executive Summary, Nicole Anne Leonce May 2025

Trauma-Informed Care: A Therapeutic Communication - Executive Summary, Nicole Anne Leonce

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Background Effective therapeutic communication is essential for building strong patient relationships, yet bias, stigma, and judgment can exacerbate trauma and widen health disparities. Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) emphasizes respect, compassion, and empathy to mitigate these issues. Problem Although TIC is extensively studied in high-income regions such as the United States, Europe, and Australia, its application in developing countries remains limited. This gap impedes culturally sensitive healthcare practices that address unique social, cultural, and economic challenges, potentially deepening disparities. Methods A comprehensive literature review was conducted to assess current TIC training research among healthcare workers. The review aimed to underscore TIC's importance …

Targeting The Beiging Of Muscle-Associated Adipose Tissue To Promote Muscle Regeneration, Jacob C. Parson May 2025

Targeting The Beiging Of Muscle-Associated Adipose Tissue To Promote Muscle Regeneration, Jacob C. Parson

WUSM Theses and Dissertations – All Programs

The expansion of intra-muscular adipose tissue (IMAT) between myofibers and epi-muscular adipose tissue (EMAT) outside of the muscle boundary accompanies numerous pathologies including diabetes, muscular dystrophy, and aging. IMAT and EMAT are anatomically juxtaposed to myofibers. Some evidence supports that IMAT and EMAT impede muscle function. This is potentially due to paracrine factors that are secreted by IMAT/EMAT. Different adipose depots can be classified in numerous ways including where they are located anatomically as well as the factors in which they secrete. Unlike classical white fat, adipose depots classified as brown or beige, noted by the marker uncoupling protein-1 (UCP-1) …

Children And Chairs, Artifacts And Reality, Adam J. Macleod May 2025

Children And Chairs, Artifacts And Reality, Adam J. Macleod

Catholic University Law Review

Where do children come from? The source of childhood—either nature or political will—is a matter not merely of chronology but of authority. Whoever makes children gets to define childhood. Legal childhood is one type of legal personhood. Legal personhood matters because legal persons bear legal rights and duties. Rights and duties direct how we act toward each other. Thus, our ideas about how persons come to be, who counts as a person, and how persons are defined in law determine in large part how we act toward persons, both other persons and ourselves.

A legal person is an artifact of …

Meeting People Where They Are At: Accessible Approaches To Ceramic Design And The Artistic Process, Molly E. Thompson

Publications and Research

This paper explores accessibility for disabled people in ceramics, drawing upon my personal experiences as a disabled potter at Artistry Community Arts Center in Vermont. I begin with a discussion of how the process of creating pottery can be made more accessible, with a list of adaptable tools I have discovered and anecdotes about how pottery instructors can adapt their teaching styles to different needs. I then explore different examples of adaptive pottery made specifically for disabled people, including some of my own work. While recounting my own successes and failures in pottery production, I conclude that imperfection is the …

Frontlines Of Influence: State Vs. Nonstate Disinformation Campaigns, Lily Wershbale May 2025

Frontlines Of Influence: State Vs. Nonstate Disinformation Campaigns, Lily Wershbale

Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase

This paper examines the evolution of disinformation campaigns conducted by state and nonstate actors, focusing specifically on Russia and the Islamic State as representative case studies. Through historical examples and qualitative comparative analysis, this research identifies the similarities and differences in disinformation’s role in actors’ core missions, resource allocation, and targeting decisions. This paper further explores the implications of artificial intelligence on disinformation campaigns, investigating how emerging technology will impact the influence operations of state governments and nonstate organizations alike. The findings reveal that while the ultimate intent of both state and non-state actors is to destabilize societies, their approaches …

Increasing Formation Of Advance Directives In Acute Care Through Staff Education, Piper E. Parres May 2025

Increasing Formation Of Advance Directives In Acute Care Through Staff Education, Piper E. Parres

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

In the acute care setting, the condition and stability of patients can change in an instant. Oftentimes, patients that were ambulatory, independent, and high functioning may be rendered critically ill and unable to communicate due to the rapid onset of an illness. When this happens, the care team must act quickly to stabilize the patient by any means necessary. With the wealth of medical knowledge and technology available in modern healthcare, life may be sustained indefinitely with the help of machinery such as ventilators, continuous renal replacement therapy, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. While some patients may welcome these interventions, others …

Shining Light On Solar Equity: Navigating Legal Barriers To Solar Energy For Low-Income Communities In Washington, Magdalena Larrain May 2025

Shining Light On Solar Equity: Navigating Legal Barriers To Solar Energy For Low-Income Communities In Washington, Magdalena Larrain

Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law

While solar energy adoption has been growing rapidly across the United States, access to its benefits remains uneven. In Washington State, low-income households and marginalized communities often face significant barriers to participation in the clean energy transition. These include high upfront installation costs, limited financing options, and legal frameworks that fail to account for renters, multi-family dwellings, and communities without suitable rooftops. Additionally, outdated net metering policies and restrictive utility regulations further limit solar accessibility for those already burdened by energy insecurity. This article investigates the potential of community solar projects—shared solar installations that allow multiple households to subscribe and …

Adults' Intention To Take An Arthritis Prescription Drug Based On Drug Advertisements, Amanda Radola May 2025

Adults' Intention To Take An Arthritis Prescription Drug Based On Drug Advertisements, Amanda Radola

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Direct-to-Consumer Prescription Advertising (DTCPA) has rapidly expanded, particularly via social media, but research on its influence on individual decisions regarding prescribed medications remains limited. This gap is notable among chronic disease patients, such as those with arthritis, which affected over 58.5 million U.S. adults as of 2015 and is projected to rise to 78.4 million by 2040 (Barbour et al., 2017; Hootman et al., 2016). Social media discussions show significant activity following television ads for arthritis drugs (Curtis et al., 2017). However, few studies explore how DTCPA impacts patient intentions to take advertised arthritis medications. This study employed a novel …

Prosodic Pitch And Intensity Patterns In People With Moderate Broca's Aphasia, Juliana Pickard May 2025

Prosodic Pitch And Intensity Patterns In People With Moderate Broca's Aphasia, Juliana Pickard

Theses and Dissertations

People with aphasia (PWA) experience deficits in utilizing prosody, which drastically impacts their communicative effectiveness. The lack of prosody in people with aphasia may alter their ability to nurture meaningful relationships, advance educational and work opportunities, and participate in community activities. This study acoustically evaluates the prosodic characteristics of speech produced by individuals with non-fluent aphasia to better understand how to accurately assess and more effectively treat communication difficulties in PWA. Recorded speech samples derived from a Cinderella story retell from 16 individuals with moderate Broca's aphasia and 16 age-matched controls were acoustically analyzed in this study. The recordings were …
