Fresh-market blackberries face challenges with inconsistent flavor, limiting consumer demand. This study examines how harvest date and environmental conditions impact the physicochemical and volatile profiles of three cultivars (Sweet-Ark (R) Ponca, Sweet-Ark (R) Caddo, and Ouachita) grown in Fayetteville, AR, during the 2022-2023 seasons. Using targeted and untargeted GC-MS/MS approach, 262 volatile compounds across 12 classes were identified. Increased rainfall and cooler temperatures in 2023 positively affected Ouachita and Sweet-Ark (R) Caddo's physical attributes but reduced Sweet-Ark (R) Ponca's firmness and weight. Sweet-Ark (R) Caddo exhibited the highest volatile content in 2022 (2991 mu g/kg), driven by terpenes (1018.03 mu …

Cornelius Nepos: Fortune, Biography, And The Late Roman Republic, William H. Merrick
Cornelius Nepos: Fortune, Biography, And The Late Roman Republic, William H. Merrick
History Undergraduate Honors Theses
Abstract: This paper examines ancient biography and the late Roman Republic by analyzing the surviving writings of Cornelius Nepos. Cornelius Nepos was a late Republican intellectual and friend of several of the most prominent literary figures of his day. The literature on Nepos tended to be dismissive of the author until the 1980s, when it began to shift towards viewing Nepos through the lens of ancient biography. By examining the theme of fortuna [fortune] throughout Nepos’ work and contrasting it with usage of the theme in other Latin authors or Greek historians, this paper demonstrates that Nepos adapts a longstanding …
The Compassionate H.E.A.R.T. Of Relationship-Centered Care, Dustin Willis
The Compassionate H.E.A.R.T. Of Relationship-Centered Care, Dustin Willis
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The patient-provider interaction (PPI) represents a critical dimension of healthcare delivery that significantly influences clinical outcomes, yet the nuanced dynamics of compassionate care remain operationally elusive. This dissertation presents the Compassionate H.E.A.R.T. (Helping Ease, Alleviate, & Relieve Therapeutically) framework—a novel theoretical model for understanding and enhancing relationship-centered care—and examines its validity, reliability, and therapeutic impact.
Through four interconnected studies, this research explores the multifaceted nature of compassionate care. First, a comprehensive literature review excavates the landscape of patient-provider interactions, highlighting terminological inconsistencies, incomplete theoretical frameworks, and methodological challenges in measuring these ethereal qualities. Second, the Compassionate H.E.A.R.T. model is introduced, …

Feasibility And Effectiveness Of A Mindfulness Stress Reduction Intervention, Diana Guadalupe Marin
Feasibility And Effectiveness Of A Mindfulness Stress Reduction Intervention, Diana Guadalupe Marin
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Health disparities in low-resource communities lead to poor physical and mental health outcomes. To reduce health disparities, the United States has looked to global health initiative and is starting to rely on lay health workers more consistently as a promising and sustainable force. Community Health Worker (CHWs) work alongside the local health care system to connect vulnerable populations to needed care. However, the demand of their role puts CHWs at risk for stress, burnout, and vicarious trauma. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a stress reduction intervention that has been empirically supported to reduce stress and burnout in numerous populations. To …

Chains Of Knowledge: Slavery, Low-Wage Labor, And The Role Of Intellectual Property In Antebellum Georgia (1789 To 1865), Kris Kallies
Journal of the Patent and Trademark Resource Center Association
This article investigates Georgia’s engagement with intellectual property from 1789 to 1865, with an epilogue to 1920, arguing that the state’s economic reliance on unfree labor systems profoundly shaped its approach to technological innovation. Drawing from a newly constructed, state-specific patent database, the study reveals that Georgia’s low patenting rates—examining the areas of in mining and metallurgy, textiles, and the establishment of the Confederate Patent Office during the American Civil War—was not indicative of technological stagnation, but rather evidence of a region where innovation was informal, experiential, and embedded in labor hierarchies. The article advances the argument that the absence …

Perioperative Fluid Therapy Impairs Lymphatic Pump Function In Male Rats, Rebecca C Harlow-Adamek, Reetu Singh, Randolph H Stewart, Cristine L Heaps, Glen A Laine, Charles S Cox, Ranjeet M Dongaonkar
The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine
Because of its life-saving benefits, perioperative IV fluid therapy remains a cornerstone of medical treatment. However, it also induces sustained edemagenic stress. The resulting persistent interstitial edema-excessive fluid accumulation in the interstitium-significantly delays recovery and worsens patient outcomes. Therefore, to gain a detailed understanding of the lymphatic functional consequences of perioperative fluid therapy, this study aimed to test the hypothesis that perioperative IV fluid therapy compromises lymphatic pump function within 3 days after major surgery. Following a midline laparotomy, animals received IV fluid therapy over 48 h during recovery (FLTP). Three days post-surgery, mesenteric lymphatic vessels from FLTP and sham …

Silicon Valley Power Sustainable Futures Program
Climate change has been on the global agenda for decades now, whether that is through the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the annual Conference of the Parties summits, or varying regional agreements across the world. Policy suggests that global cooperation will address the increasing natural disasters and rising temperatures, but new initiatives are challenging this traditional model of climate change solutions. One of these emerging, innovative solutions are Neighborhood Resilience Hubs. As we know, climate change disproportionately affects historically marginalized communities, especially BIPOC and low-income populations. In Santa Clara, Neighborhood Resilience Hubs offer a path forward by empowering local communities …

Dissertations
Newcomer English learners (ELs) often arrive in the United States having fled persecution, economic or political oppression, war, or natural disasters in their country of origin. They are new to the English language, new to the American school system, at times well into their educational journey, and sometimes have missed out on significant amounts of formal schooling. Many also carry trauma from the circumstances that forced them to leave their homes. Most schools are not fully equipped to welcome these students and their families into the learning community, nor are they prepared to address the unique challenges newcomer ELs face. …
The Impact Of Restorative Practices Intervention On School Culture, Lisa Peloquin
The Impact Of Restorative Practices Intervention On School Culture, Lisa Peloquin
Dissertations
The American educational system, historically designed to empower a few while training the majority to be docile workers, is increasingly being called upon to promote greater equity. While some reform efforts promote highly restrictive behavioral policies to boost student achievement, these approaches often serve to recreate the oppressive school systems they seek to reform. Restorative practices, an alternative approach to school reform, emphasizes creating a culture of strong relationships, where children learn the academic and social emotional skills they need to be successful. This paper presents a case study of one urban, public school’s implementation of restorative practices, examining its …

Intersecting Inequities: Latinx Access To Mental Health Services, Melissa Thorson
Dissertations
This study examined barriers to mental health service utilization among Latinx populations using data from the 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). Through the theoretical frameworks of Minority Stress Theory and Toxic Stress Theory, the study investigated the relationships between age, language proficiency, socioeconomic status, and mental health service access among different Latinx subgroups. Statistical analyses included chi-square tests, multiple regression, and mediation analyses on a sample of Latinx adults (N = 9,852). Results indicated associations between age and English proficiency (χ² = 145.23, p < .001, Cramer's V = 0.38), with 45% of adults aged 50 and older reporting limited English proficiency. Socioeconomic analysis revealed that 32% of older Latinx adults reported family incomes below $20,000, with insurance status partially mediating the relationship between income and service utilization (indirect effect = 0.15, 95% CI [0.08, 0.23]). differences in utilization rates emerged among Latinx subgroups (F(6, 1243) = 8.76, p < .001, η² = 0.12), with Mexican-origin individuals showing higher utilization (10%) compared to Puerto Rican individuals (2-3%). Age and socioeconomic status demonstrated interaction effects (β = 0.18, p < .01), while language proficiency moderated the relationship between age and service utilization (β = 0.24, p < .001). These findings suggest that barriers to mental health service utilization among Latinx populations are complex and interconnected, requiring multilevel interventions that address linguistic, cultural, and socioeconomic factors simultaneously. Implications for healthcare policy and service delivery are discussed, emphasizing the need for culturally responsive and linguistically appropriate mental health services.

Narratives Of Latina Teacher Candidates On Subtractive Schooling Experiences And Their Language Identity, Joao Goebel
Dissertations
The subtractive nature of bilingual education in the United States has long impacted the language identities of Latinx students. Despite being raised in multilingual environments, many are schooled in systems that devalue their home languages and prioritize English-only instruction. This study explored how these dynamics influenced Latina teacher candidates’ perceptions of their own bilingualism and professional identities. The purpose of the study was to examine how Latina teacher candidates understood and constructed their language identities in the context of their K–12 and higher education experiences. The study used narrative research centered on four Latina teacher candidates enrolled in an undergraduate …
Fast Transients From Magnetic Disks Around Non-Spinning Collapsar Black Holes, Justin A. Bopp
Fast Transients From Magnetic Disks Around Non-Spinning Collapsar Black Holes, Justin A. Bopp
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Most black holes (BHs) formed in collapsing stars have low spin, though some are expected to acquire a magnetic accretion disk during the collapse. While such BH disks can launch magnetically driven winds, their physics and observational signatures have remained unexplored. We present global 3D general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of collapsing stars that form slowly spinning BHs with accretion disks. As the disk transitions to a magnetically arrested state, it drives mildly relativistic, wobbling, collimated magnetic outflows through two mechanisms: steady outflows along vertical magnetic field lines (“Blandford-Payne jets”) and magnetic flux eruptions. With isotropic-equivalent energy of Eiso ≈10 …

Counter-Hegemony In The Captive State: Recasting Katrina’S Carceral Legacy Through Conjuncture, Joseph S. Muratore
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis traces the historical development and contemporary manifestations of carceral power in Louisiana, arguing that racialized systems of control—from slavery and convict leasing to mass incarceration—have been sustained through shifting alliances of political and economic elites. Using The Historic New Orleans Collection (HNOC) and its exhibit Captive State: Louisiana and the Making of Mass Incarceration as a foundational timeline, this study demonstrates how Bourbonism forged a regional bloc that institutionalized racial domination through incarceration and labor exploitation, later reconstituted through neoliberal policies of abandonment, privatization, and militarization. I chose to focus on Hurricane Katrina because its aftermath reflects many …
