Institutional Dual-Holders And Corporate Disclosures: A Natural Experiment, Lin Cheng, Qiang Cheng, Liwei Weng, Mark Yuzhi Yan Jun 2025

Institutional Dual-Holders And Corporate Disclosures: A Natural Experiment, Lin Cheng, Qiang Cheng, Liwei Weng, Mark Yuzhi Yan

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This study examines the impact of the presence of institutional dual-holders, whose portfolios hold both loans and equity securities of the same firms, on those firms' voluntary disclosures. Using mergers between institutional shareholders and lenders to the same firms as exogenous shocks to identify firms with institutional dual-holders that have high relative equity ownership, we document that such firms are less likely to provide management forecasts and disclose fewer voluntary 8-K items. In cross-sectional analyses, we find that the reduction in voluntary disclosures is more pronounced when institutional dual-holders have higher board representation and when firms have lower litigation risk. …

The Impact Of Perceived Social Support On Postpartum Depression: The Mediating Role Of Psychological Capital And Sense Of Coherence, Hana K. Aman

psychology

Background: The relationship between postpartum depression and social support is highly supported in research. However, few studies investigated the factors that could intervene with this relationship. The purpose of this research is to investigate how psychological capital (PsyCap) and sense of coherence (SOC) can mediate the relationship between perceived social support (PSS) and postpartum depression. Methods: This study analysed data from 217 postpartum women with age range between 25-41(M= 30.12, SD= 3.65). The sample was recruited from public and private hospitals and obstetrics/gynaecology and paediatric clinics in Cairo, Egypt. Data was collected using Arabic versions of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression …

Bridging The Policy Gap: A Critical Autoethnography Of Asylum Accompaniment, Amanda Heffernan, Audrey Hudgins

International Studies Faculty Scholarship

Unlike refugees, most asylum-seekers receive scant attention from US government and non-profit agencies. A loose network of individuals and organizations aims to bridge this gap in policy and services through the practice of asylum accompaniment. This article, by two scholar-activists with a combined 10 years of experience accompanying asylum-seekers, aims to:

  • Explore the praxis of asylum accompaniment via critical autoethnography, using our accompaniment narratives to illuminate the dynamics of accompaniment relationships, including the profound mutual benefits of this type of engagement and the complexities of social and political power, privilege, and access
  • Propose policy solutions that emerge from critical reflection …

From Human Mapping To Machine Embedding: Uncovering Key Legal Drivers And Deterrents Of Isds Filing Frequencies, Sangchul Park Jun 2025

From Human Mapping To Machine Embedding: Uncovering Key Legal Drivers And Deterrents Of Isds Filing Frequencies, Sangchul Park

Chicago Journal of International Law

International investment agreements (IIAs), while intended to prop cross-border investment, have faced persistent criticism for potentially undermining the regulatory sovereignty of developing countries. Various mechanisms have been proposed as alternatives to traditional bilateral investment treaty (BIT) models, often with the goal of curbing investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) filings. While existing research has uncovered the impact of nonlegal factors, such as macroeconomic crises, little has been done to systematically examine how legal provisions in either major model BITs or ISDS reform toolboxes influence ISDS filing patterns. To address this gap, this Article analyzes the interplay between (i) legal texts of 2,148 …

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Faculty Papers

Osteolytic lesions of the mandibular condyle can represent a diverse range of differential diagnoses, including malignancies such as metastatic disease, Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, and multiple myeloma. This case report details a 40-year-old male with a 3-year history of right temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, initially misdiagnosed as temporomandibular disorder. Comprehensive imaging studies, including cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), maxillofacial computed tomography (CT), and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), revealed extensive osteolytic lesions in the mandible, frontal bone, and cervical spine. A CT-guided biopsy confirmed the presence of a plasma cell neoplasm, leading to the diagnosis of multiple myeloma. …

Multiple Collection Methodology For Studying The Connection Between Behaviour And Design In The Built Environment, María Beltrán Rodríguez

Artículos científicos

This study examines the relationship between urban design and convivial behaviour using a multipledata collection approach. By comparing two distinct urban parks—Superkilen in Copenhagen and Parc Central del Poblenou in Barcelona—the research demonstrates how different spatial configurations and design solutions influence social interactions. The methodology integrates direct observation, behavioural mapping, survey data, and graphic representation to systematically assess convivial behaviour across two diverse yet comparable environments. Both Superkilen and Parc Central del Poblenou were designed by high-profile architects with the intent of fostering interaction among diverse urban populations. While both parks were conceived as highly designed, convivial spaces, fieldwork reveals …

How Do Health Insurer Practices Affect Health Equity For Gay And Bisexual Men And Transmasculine Individuals? A Qualitative And Health Policy Assessment, Alexa D'Angelo Jun 2025

How Do Health Insurer Practices Affect Health Equity For Gay And Bisexual Men And Transmasculine Individuals? A Qualitative And Health Policy Assessment, Alexa D'Angelo

Dissertations and Theses

In the U.S. there continue to be stark disparities in health that affect LGBTQ+ communities. These disparities include those related to mental health, sexually transmitted infections, along with chronic illnesses and some cancers. Higher health needs across diagnostic categories mean that LGBTQ+ individuals require access to the healthcare system both to prevent conditions disproportionately affecting the community, and to treat conditions as they arise. In the U.S., access to healthcare often requires either reliable insurance coverage or another payer to cover costs associated with care. Thus, health insurance status and coverage of care, along with coverage regulations and health policies …

Lost And Found: The Forgotten Origins Of The “Cruel And Unusual Punishments” Prohibition, John D. Bessler Jun 2025

Lost And Found: The Forgotten Origins Of The “Cruel And Unusual Punishments” Prohibition, John D. Bessler

Articles

The U.S. Supreme Court and legal scholars have long traced the origins of the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition against “cruel and unusual punishments” to the English Declaration of Rights, codified as the English Bill of Rights (1689). The English Declaration of Rights recited that, in King James II’s reign, “illegal and cruel punishments” had been “inflicted,” with its tenth clause then declaring in hortatory fashion: “That excessive bail ought not to be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.” The prohibitions against excessive bail and excessive fines and the final phrase—“nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted”—were later …

To Keep Our Nation Breathing: The Impact Of State Legislation And The Prep Act On Covid-19 Liability Immunity Defenses For Healthcare Providers In The Eleventh Circuit, J. Bailey Hotard

Mercer Law Review

This Comment is not intended to patronize you with statistics related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The odds suggest that you or someone you love dealt with these gruesome realities in real-time. Instead, allow me to paint a picture:1 You direct hospital operations. You have built your career at a trauma hospital, so you are familiar with the stress that comes with a daily ratio of six patients to one nurse—and yet, COVID-19 brings constantly evolving challenges that no one anticipated. On a typical day, during the height of the pandemic, your consecutive twelve-hour workdays become a blur as you and …

Anything No Longer Goes: How The Eleventh Circuit Has Settled On One Standard To Determine Deliberate-Indifference Claims, Sarah Beth Scarborough Jun 2025

Anything No Longer Goes: How The Eleventh Circuit Has Settled On One Standard To Determine Deliberate-Indifference Claims, Sarah Beth Scarborough

Mercer Law Review

Deliberate indifference to the medical care of a loved one, or oneself, rightly causes outrage. When such an occurrence takes place behind prison walls, inmates or loved ones on their behalf, file a deliberate indifference claim under 42 U.S.C. § 1983,and they allege a violation of their Eighth Amendment right to be free of cruel and unusual punishment. However, the test for deliberate indifference has been misconstrued and misapplied for decades within the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Such a malleable test leads to different standards of proof for a plaintiff to meet, and confusion among …

Repugnant Verdicts For $1000: Navigating The Intersection Of Double Jeopardy And Conflicting Verdicts In Mcelrath V. Georgia, Talia Levine

Mercer Law Review

“No man is to be brought into jeopardy of his life, more than once, for the same offense.” This ancient maxim, preserved in the Double Jeopardy Clause of the Fifth Amendment, is a hallmark of the American justice system. The Double Jeopardy Clause gives a criminal defendant the constitutional right not to be tried again for the same offense after being acquitted. This guarantee stands as “[p]erhaps the most fundamental rule in the history of double jeopardy jurisprudence.”

The Supreme Court of the United States has repeatedly upheld these principles; by refusing to allow retrial following an acquittal, the Court …

Situating The Statistical Legacies Of Galton And Fisher: Multi-Layered Discussions In The Mathematics Classroom, Deborah Kent, Jemma Lorenat

The Mathematics Enthusiast

When ethics requirements are confined to courses taught by non-STEM faculty, students may erroneously conclude that such considerations are at most marginal to their professional training. Primary source readings and discussion frameworks can tangibly link data analysis to questions of values within data science, computing ethics, or statistics courses. The particular cases of Sir Francis Galton and Sir Ronald Fisher—both statisticians and eugenicists—provide a rich collection of easily accessible digitized primary source material as well as a vast number of related popular and technical publications. Galton and Fisher figured centrally in the development of statistics as it is currently practiced …

Trusted Together: A Commognitive Perspective On A Primary Source Project In Multivariable Calculus, Abe Edwards Jun 2025

Trusted Together: A Commognitive Perspective On A Primary Source Project In Multivariable Calculus, Abe Edwards

The Mathematics Enthusiast

When an instructor asks their students to read, discuss, and learn from primary historical sources as replacements for traditional textbook expositions, it requires trust both of their students and of the source authors. This article draws on the commognitive theory of learning to justify this trust. The article demonstrates how a primary source project related to Green’s Theorem can be used to both help students see that mathematical objects evolve over time, and to give students opportunities to increase their participation in the mathematical community through the adoption of new mathematical discourses.

New Methods Of Capturing Students’ Experiences With Primary Source Projects: Pioneering A Transgressive Lens, Mark Watford, Kathleen Michelle Clark, Cihan Can

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The mathematics education research landscape possesses limited examples of large-scale research regarding students’ experience with primary historical sources in the learning of mathematics at the undergraduate level. However, the field continues to investigate methods of determining how students might overcome obstacles to reach new outcomes. This article documents an exploration within the TRansforming Instruction in Undergraduate Mathematics via Primary Historical Sources (TRIUMPHS) project that combined transgressions theory and situated learning theory, thereby illuminating three components of the former—boundaries, transgressive actions, and outcomes. In this regard, we capture students’ Primary Source Project (PSP) learning experiences in Abstract Algebra courses and bring …

Representations Of Residential Child Care In The Irish Times Newspaper From 1870 To 2022, Niamh Caldwell

Masters

Guided by Social Representations Theory, this study explores how representation of residential childcare in The Irish Times have changed over time. A newspaper was chosen as the data source as mass media is proposed to have power over creating and communicating representations to the public. The representations explored include those of children, the construction of childhood and children’s needs, and the role of other people/parties in the lives of children in care. Grounded in the pragmatic paradigm, quantitative and qualitative content analyses were conducted. Data was collected from ten time periods between 1870 to 2022 from The Irish Times Digital …

Impact Of Harvest Date And Year On The Volatile And Physicochemical Properties Of Fresh-Market Blackberry Cultivars, Rahul Sen, Andrea Myers, Alyssa Finocchiaro, Gracie Howard, Luke Norman, Renee Threlfall, Amanda Mcwhirt, Margaret Worthington, Scott Robert Lafontaine

Food Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Fresh-market blackberries face challenges with inconsistent flavor, limiting consumer demand. This study examines how harvest date and environmental conditions impact the physicochemical and volatile profiles of three cultivars (Sweet-Ark (R) Ponca, Sweet-Ark (R) Caddo, and Ouachita) grown in Fayetteville, AR, during the 2022-2023 seasons. Using targeted and untargeted GC-MS/MS approach, 262 volatile compounds across 12 classes were identified. Increased rainfall and cooler temperatures in 2023 positively affected Ouachita and Sweet-Ark (R) Caddo's physical attributes but reduced Sweet-Ark (R) Ponca's firmness and weight. Sweet-Ark (R) Caddo exhibited the highest volatile content in 2022 (2991 mu g/kg), driven by terpenes (1018.03 mu …
