The Clinical Utility Of Measuring Emotion Dysregulation In Autistic Youth, Monica S. Trevino Jun 2025

The Clinical Utility Of Measuring Emotion Dysregulation In Autistic Youth, Monica S. Trevino

Dissertations

Autistic youth experience disproportionately high rates and severity of emotion dysregulation, which is linked to behavioral challenges, psychiatric comorbidities, familial stress, and increased emergency service and hospitalization use. Despite its clinical significance, emotion dysregulation in autistic youth remains relatively understudied and misunderstood, partly due to the lack of standardized assessment tools and limited research on its heterogeneity within autistic populations. In the present study, structural equation modeling was used to 1) validate the Emotion Dysregulation Inventory (EDI) and assess measurement invariance in a diverse sample and 2) explore associations among emotion dysregulation, autism symptoms, and related child and family characteristics, …

What Utahns Can Do To Strengthen Girls & Women: Findings From Community Conversations Across Utah, Corinne Clarkson, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

For many people, Utah is a great place to live.1 The state consistently ranks high in national rankings and boasts high volunteerism, affordability, happiness, outdoor recreation, social mobility, and more.2 These top rankings emphasize qualities we can—and should—be pleased with. However, extensive research continues to show that women and girls are not thriving in many critical ways, and that has detrimental effects for Utah families and communities.3 From economic insecurity, limited access to mental healthcare, sexism in the workplace, and unequal representation in all sectors of leadership, Utah women face a myriad of challenges, often without the …

The Blue Division In The Soviet Union: Cultural Exchange Through The Lens Of Art, Abigail Beus Jun 2025

The Blue Division In The Soviet Union: Cultural Exchange Through The Lens Of Art, Abigail Beus

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines the cultural encounters and artistic interactions between Spanish Blue Division volunteers and the Soviet Union during World War II. While scholarship has long focused on the grand-scale looting conducted by the Nazis, Spain’s role—particularly that of the Blue Division—in wartime art theft and cultural exchange has been significantly underexplored. Sent by Franco’s fascist regime to support Hitler’s invasion of the Soviet Union, the Blue Division served not only as military auxiliaries but also as cultural intermediaries. Drawing on memoirs, letters, and the Blue Division’s own newspaper Hoja de Campaña, this study analyzes how Spanish soldiers encountered, …

K-Mshc: Unmasking Minimally Sufficient Head Circuits In Large Language Models With Experiments On Syntactic Classification Tasks, Pratim Chowdhary, Peter Chin, Deepernab Chakrabarty

Computer Science Senior Theses

Understanding which neural components drive specific capabilities in mid-sized language models ($\leq$10B parameters) remains a key challenge. We introduce the $(\bm{K}, \epsilon)$-Minimum Sufficient Head Circuit ($K$-MSHC), a methodology to identify minimal sets of attention heads crucial for classification tasks as well as Search-K-MSHC, an efficient algorithm for discovering these circuits. Applying our Search-K-MSHC algorithm to Gemma-9B, we analyze three syntactic task families: grammar acceptability, arithmetic verification, and arithmetic word problems. Our findings reveal distinct task-specific head circuits, with grammar tasks predominantly utilizing early layers, word problems showing pronounced activity in both shallow and deep regions, and arithmetic verification demonstrating a …

An Approach To Stylometry Using Causal Language Models, Harrison F. Stropkay Jun 2025

An Approach To Stylometry Using Causal Language Models, Harrison F. Stropkay

Computer Science Senior Theses

We present a novel stylometric approach using large language models. By training separate models on individual authors' works, we find that each model achieves lower cross-entropy loss when predicting text from its training author compared to other authors' texts. Moreover, for any given text, the model trained on its true author’s corpus yields the lowest loss. We suggest that, in this way, a model trained on one author's works embodies the unique writing style of that author. We demonstrate our approach on works by eight known authors. This approach also confirms that R. P. Thompson wrote the well-studied 15th book …

Faculty Scholarship

Effective variable selection is central to the success of health services research, where large, complex datasets often include numerous variables with varying degrees of relevance. This paper presents a structured approach to variable selection, highlighting the importance of combining domain expertise with advanced analytical techniques to ensure the inclusion of only the most pertinent variables. We explore several methods, including manual selection, correlation matrices, random forests, and stepwise regression, each with its strengths and limitations in managing multicollinearity, dimensionality, and interpretability. By carefully preprocessing variables—removing redundant, irrelevant, or missing data—and applying feature selection tools like decision tree-based algorithms, researchers can …

The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine

To explore the potential of site-selectively radiolabeled antibody-drug conjugates (ADC) against solid tumors, we constructed and evaluated radiolabeled ADCs equipped with lutetium-177 (177Lu) and a membrane-permeable antimitotic agent. Site-selective 177Lu-labeled ADCs [anti-trophoblast cell-surface antigen 2 (TROP2) 177Lu-DTPA ADCs or anti-HER2 177Lu-DO3A ADCs], a 177Lu-labeled homogeneous radioimmunoconjugate (homogeneous RIC), and 177Lu-labeled conventional RIC (heterogeneous RIC) were constructed. We confirmed that 177Lu-labeled ADCs and the homogeneous RIC were obtained with high homogeneity and defined chelator/payload-to-antibody ratios. Next, we performed biodistribution studies and treatment efficacy studies in xenograft mouse models bearing orthotopic breast tumors. Compared with the heterogeneous RIC, the 177Lu-DTPA TROP2 ADC …

Department of Radiology Faculty Papers

Vascular endothelial growth factor receptors (VEGFRs) are key regulators of angiogenesis, lymphangiogenesis, and vascular permeability, playing essential roles in both physiological and pathological processes. The VEGFR family, including VEGFR-1, VEGFR-2, and VEGFR-3, interacts with structurally related VEGF ligands (VEGFA, VEGFB, VEGFC, VEGFD, and placental growth factor [PlGF]), activating downstream signaling pathways that mediate critical cellular processes, including proliferation, migration, and survival. Dysregulation of VEGFR signaling has been implicated in numerous diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular conditions, and inflammatory disorders. Targeting VEGFRs with radiopharmaceuticals, such as radiolabeled peptides, antibodies, and specific tracers like 64Cu-bevacizumab and 89Zr-ramucirumab, has emerged as a powerful …

Deep Learning Based Rapid X-Ray Fluorescence Signal Extraction And Image Reconstruction For Preclinical Benchtop X-Ray Fluorescence Computed Tomography Applications, Amrit Kaphle, Sandun Jayarathna, Sang Hyun Cho

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Recent research advances have resulted in an experimental benchtop X-ray fluorescence computed tomography (XFCT) system that likely meets the imaging dose/scan time constraints for benchtop XFCT imaging of live mice injected with gold nanoparticles (GNPs). For routine in vivo benchtop XFCT imaging, however, additional challenges, most notably the need for rapid/near-real-time handling of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) signal extraction and XFCT image reconstruction, must be successfully addressed. Here we propose a novel end-to-end deep learning (DL) framework that integrates a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D CNN) for rapid XRF signal extraction with a U-Net model for XFCT image reconstruction. We trained …

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) are the most aggressive molecular subtypes of breast cancer. Poor clinical outcomes highlight the pressing need to discover novel targets for the effective treatment of these diseases. LMP7 (β5i/PSMB8), a proteolytic subunit of the immunoproteasome, is implicated in the pathogenesis of multiple myeloma, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, and inflammation-related cancers. However, the role of LMP7 in TNBC and IBC remains poorly characterized. Here, we evaluated the function of LMP7 in TNBC and IBC using the selective LMP7 inhibitor M3258. In human TNBC patient samples, LMP7 expression correlated strongly with CD8+ T …

Immunosuppressive myeloid cells are critical obstacles to T cell-centered immune checkpoint blockade therapies, which have been successful in treating a fraction of patients with cancer. How tumor cells interact with myeloid cells to regulate immune responses and tumor development is unclear. In this study, we report that certain membrane tyrosine kinase Eph receptors, including EphA7 and EphB1, specifically bind the immune inhibitory receptors leukocyte Ig-like receptor family B 5 (LILRB5) and LILRB2. These Eph receptors induce LILRB5-mediated signaling activation, and LILRB5 also activates Eph receptor signaling. Activation of LILRB5 promoted immunosuppressive marker expression and inhibited activating marker expression on myeloid …
