Implementation Of A Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Toolkit Postpartum, Emily R. Leone Jul 2025

Implementation Of A Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Toolkit Postpartum, Emily R. Leone

Dissertations

Problem: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually acquired infection in the world (DeCherney et al., 2018). Even a single dose of the HPV vaccine can provide up to 97% protection against HPV 16 and 18, which are the strains that cause 70% of all cervical cancers (Barnabas et al., 2022). Missouri ranks 35th in the country for HPV vaccination (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2020).

Methods: This quality improvement project implemented an HPV toolkit consisting of: 1) staff nurse education in the form of a written presentation 2) patient and provider education in the form of …

Impactful Programs And Initiatives For Employee Resource Groups That Promote And Sustain Positive Social Determinants Of Health, Lisa Kangas, Maureen Hall, Julie James, Gladys Peters

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact

Organizational diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) leaders’ lack of interest in employee resource groups (ERGs) and related programs can negatively impact an organization’s culture, operational excellence, and employee retention and have detrimental implications for social determinants of health (SDOH). Prioritizing ERG programs and initiatives is essential for organizational success and can positively affect SDOH. This qualitative pragmatic inquiry study identified and explored ERG programs and initiatives that support organizational culture, operational excellence, and employee retention. The research question for this study was: What ERG programs and initiatives support organizational culture, operational excellence, and employee retention? The study included eight DEI leaders …

Selected Bird-Themed Chamber Works For Coloratura Soprano, Flute, And Piano, Jee Won Shin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines three bird-themed chamber works for coloratura soprano, flute, and piano, exploring how the human voice and flute intertwine to emulate birdsong and convey emotional depth. The selected repertoire spans from the Baroque to the Romantic era: (1) “Sweet Bird” from L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato (1740) by George Frideric Handel, (2) “Le Rossignol” by Léo Delibes (a 19th-century French mélodie, arranged with flute obbligato by Ary van Leeuwen for soprano Lily Pons in 1933), and (3) “The Russian Nightingale” by Aleksandr Alyabyev (his famed 1825 song “Solovey,” later arranged with flute by Estelle Liebling for …

Retrospective Study And Predictive Modeling Of The Impact Of Social Determinants Of Health On Sepsis Outcomes, Mwembezi Aaron Nyelele Jul 2025

Retrospective Study And Predictive Modeling Of The Impact Of Social Determinants Of Health On Sepsis Outcomes, Mwembezi Aaron Nyelele

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Sepsis, a life-threatening organ failure caused by the body’s abnormal and harmful response to an infection, remains a major global and national health challenge. In the United States, it contributes significantly to hospital mortality and imposes a substantial economic burden, with billions spent annually on treatment. Early diagnosis is difficult due to the nonspecific nature of sepsis symptoms, often leading to delays in care and poorer outcomes. As the incidence and severity of sepsis rise, identifying factors that influence outcomes is increasingly critical. Emerging research has shown that Social Determinants of Health (SDOH), including economic stability, education, neighborhood and built …

Stolen Humanity On Display: Lacking Legislation For Human Remains In U.S. Museums, Sarah M. Fassio Jul 2025

Stolen Humanity On Display: Lacking Legislation For Human Remains In U.S. Museums, Sarah M. Fassio

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

In museums across the United States, displays of human remains are not rarities. Yet few attendees stop to consider the provenance behind those once-living parts of our ancestors. To do so, one would have to contend with an unpleasant history rife with scientific racism and graverobbing for the personal collections of society’s upper crust. Considering the origins of such displays reveals that the labels and names attached to human remains in museums often serve more to alienate them from their humanity than they do to connect or contextualize.

Legal regulations pertaining to displayed human remains are piecemeal. There are federal …

Precise Operations, Imprecise Laws: How Nebulous Laws Wreak Havoc In Outer Space, Matthew H. Ormsbee, Harine Raaj

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

As space operations advance with unprecedented precision, the laws governing these activities remain outdated, vague, and incapable of addressing contemporary challenges. The Outer Space Treaty (OST) and the Liability Convention, drafted in the Cold War era, fail to adequately define fundamental terms such as damage, fault, and compensation. This lack of legal precision creates significant liability gaps, particularly as space debris, mega-constellations, and private-sector actors reshape the space landscape. This article explores how these ambiguities hinder legal predictability and fair compensation for victims of space-related harm. By analyzing real-world space incidents, including the Cosmos 954 reentry, the Iridium-Cosmos collision, and …

Nitric Oxide Does Not Improve Liver Mitochondrial Function 48 Hours After Cecal Ligation And Perforation In Experimental Sepsis, Pierre Eyenga, Shey-Shing Sheu Jul 2025

Nitric Oxide Does Not Improve Liver Mitochondrial Function 48 Hours After Cecal Ligation And Perforation In Experimental Sepsis, Pierre Eyenga, Shey-Shing Sheu

Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers

Nitric oxide (NO) has a dual effect on mitochondria. Incubating liver mitochondria with NO improves oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) efficiency by decreasing state 4 respiration more than ATP synthesis and preventing mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) opening. We evaluated the effect of L-arginine (L-arg), an NO donor, on isolated liver mitochondrial respiration and mPTP in sepsis. Male mice were subjected to cecal ligation and perforation (CLP) with saline resuscitation or sham. After 8, 24, and 48 h, with and without L-arg, we measured isolated liver mitochondrial respiration and cytochrome c oxidase (COX) activity using polarographic methods and calcium retention capacity (CRC) …

China Maritime Report #48: Great Inspectations: Prc Maritime Law Enforcement Operations In The Taiwan Strait, Julia Famularo Jul 2025

China Maritime Report #48: Great Inspectations: Prc Maritime Law Enforcement Operations In The Taiwan Strait, Julia Famularo

CMSI China Maritime Reports

Main Findings

  • People’s Republic of China (PRC) law enforcement operations function as forms of cognitive and legal warfare. They represent a clear effort to undermine international maritime law as well as Taiwan’s sovereignty.
  • The PRC asserts that the Taiwan Strait comprises multiple “zones,” to include “internal waters, territorial sea, [the] contiguous zone, and the Exclusive Economic Zone.” While China does not explicitly claim that the waters of the Taiwan Strait wholly constitute PRC sovereign territory, it clearly implies that it has the self-defined right to exercise distinct forms of control over different zones of the Strait.
  • While stressing that China …

Bubble continuous positive airway pressure (bCPAP) is a minimally invasive respiratory support for neonates experiencing respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). It exerts continuous, oscillatory air pressure to encourage lung function and development. Neonates’ movement may cause disconnections at the nasal interface. These disconnections are characterized by the cessation of bubbling at the bCPAP respiratory circuit output and frequently go unnoticed until hypoxia develops. Common Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) bCPAP systems lack a built-in alarm or accessory device to monitor for disconnections. As a result, nursing personnel must exercise extreme caution utilizing current bCPAP procedure. If a neonate is disconnected, it …

Porous cranial lesions (cribra cranii and cribra orbitalia) are widely used by archaeologists as skeletal markers of poor child health. However, their use has not been validated with systematic data from contemporary populations, where there has been little evidence of these lesions or their health relevance. Using 375 in vivo computed tomography scans from a cohort-representative sample of adults aged 40+ years from the Bolivian Amazon, among food-limited, high-mortality forager-farmers, we identified cribra cranii on 46 (12.3%) and cribra orbitalia on 23 (6%). Cribra orbitalia was associated with several hallmarks of compromised immune function, including fewer B cells, fewer naïve …

Psychological Flexibility As A Mechanism Of Change In Online Act Among Adults Living With Chronic Health Conditions, Francesca M. Knudsen, Marissa L. Donahue, Korena S. Klimczak, Ty B. Aller, Michael E. Levin

Psychology Faculty Publications

Living with a chronic health condition (CHC) can negatively impact quality of life (QoL) through a complex interaction of mental health challenges, functional limitations, and disease management demands. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a transdiagnostic approach that shows promise in addressing shared challenges across various CHCs by fostering psychological flexibility (PF). PF has been associated with improved QoL and functional outcomes and reduced psychological symptoms in individuals living with specific CHCs; yet its mediating role in these outcomes remains underexplored. This secondary analysis examined whether changes in PF mediated improvements in QoL, psychological symptoms, and functional impairment among individuals …

The People's Rivers: Early Environmental Regulation And The Oregon State Sanitary Authority, Avery Morgan Fischer Jul 2025

The People's Rivers: Early Environmental Regulation And The Oregon State Sanitary Authority, Avery Morgan Fischer

Dissertations and Theses

The environmental movement in Oregon can trace its origins to the turn of the twentieth century, where citizen activism and initiative led to the creation of an early environmental regulatory agency, the Oregon State Sanitary Authority. This creation established that the State of Oregon had a duty to preserve, not just the navigability or usability of rivers and waterways, but the quality and purity of its water. The Oregon State Sanitary Authority played an active role in maintaining and protecting the environment as a mandate of the people, and throughout its thirty-year existence battling industrial polluters, reluctant municipalities, and disinterested …

'There Is That Of God In All Of Us': Church, State, And Restrictive Abortion Policies, Kimsey J. Stewart Jul 2025

'There Is That Of God In All Of Us': Church, State, And Restrictive Abortion Policies, Kimsey J. Stewart

LSU Master's Theses

Unsafe abortion affects millions of women around the globe every year. Unsafe abortions are more likely to occur in countries with restrictive abortion policies. Yet, these policies persist, and the worldwide trend of liberalization of abortion laws is at risk of reversal. There is a disconcerting lack of research regarding what factors cause governments to enact, retain, and enforce restrictive abortion policies. This paper is an attempt to fill in such a gap. I theorize that countries in which the government has closer ties with religious organizations will have more restrictive abortion policies. My results indicate that this is likely …

Background: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) establishes persistent infection by integrating its proviral DNA into the host genome. While most integrated proviruses are defective, a small portion of proviruses are intact that represent a major obstacle to achieving an HIV cure. We have designed an approach for selective elimination of host cells harboring replication-competent HIV (SECH), through inhibition of autophagy and anti-apoptotic molecules during viral reactivation. However, the effects of SECH on the dynamics of intact and defective HIV provirus remain unclear.

Methods: We isolated DNA from HIV-infected samples after SECH treatments. We analyzed HIV-1 proviruses in these samples by intact …

The dynamics of neural circuits and their role in mediating cellular and organismal phenomena remain poorly understood, despite numerous efforts to dissect these processes through precise instantaneous measurements or longer-time averages and approximations. We use an alternative approach: we investigate these dynamics at the system's mesoscale by analyzing spike trains and waveforms. These extended activity patterns carry robust, tractable information, are highly responsive to physiological specifics, and enable detailed tracking of circuit behavior. In particular, this methodology allows for characterizing the functionality of tau-pathology-afflicted hippocampal circuits and identifying circuit-level abnormalities that are missed by through traditional analyses. In healthy mice, …

Pathological events often impact tissue regions in a spatial variable manner, making it challenging to identify therapeutic targets. Spatial transcriptomics (ST) is a powerful technology to map spatially variable molecular mechanisms, yet suitable analytical methods have been lacking. We introduce SPaSE (Spatially-resolved Pathology ScorE), an optimal transport-based algorithm to compare ST data from diseased and control tissues. SPaSE computes a “pathology score” for each spot in the diseased sample, quantifying the pathological impact at that spot. In post-MI (myocardial infarction) mouse hearts, these scores delineated zones that matched independent expert annotations. Modeling pathology scores from gene expression revealed signatures predictive …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Nonprofit organizations serve a crucial role in tackling a wide range of significant social, environmental, and economic issues. But it is often hard to get a clear picture of their work because their information is spread out and it is difficult to see how they are collaborating. To address this issue we developed a web-based tool to collect scattered data—from a variety of sources, such as the IRS, social media, and the Census, into one easy-to-use resource. The tool begins by taking IRS records and geocoding each nonprofit’s physical address With its coordinates. It then retrieves census tract information from …

A Performance Guide To Christos Hatzis’ Songs On Poems By Sappho, Maria E. Thomas Jul 2025

A Performance Guide To Christos Hatzis’ Songs On Poems By Sappho, Maria E. Thomas

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Abstract

Christos Hatzis’ Three Songs of Poems by Sappho (1999) represents a compelling yet understudied contribution to contemporary art song repertoire. This study examines Hatzis’ settings of Sappho’s Fragments 1, 16, and 44, offering both scholarly analysis and practical performance guidance to make the cycle more accessible to singers and scholars. Through musical and textual analysis, this project reveals how Hatzis bridges ancient Greek lyric poetry with modern compositional techniques. The study demonstrates his innovative approach to word painting, rhythmic flexibility, and extended tonality, showing how these elements honor Sappho’s intimate first-person voice while creating a distinctive 20th-century art song …
