Supporting Young Learners With Disabilities In Inclusive Classrooms: A Toolkit For General Education Teachers, Emily M. Raleigh Aug 2025

Supporting Young Learners With Disabilities In Inclusive Classrooms: A Toolkit For General Education Teachers, Emily M. Raleigh

Masters Projects

Many young elementary students with disabilities often experience difficulty maintaining engagement in their learning and managing their emotions in general education classrooms. These challenges can have a negative influence on their ability to interact with their peers, develop foundational academic skills, and feel a sense of belonging. At the same time, many general educators report a lack of effective training, strategies, and confidence in implementing supports to students with disabilities, particularly in the areas of self-regulation and engagement. This project responds to this issue through the creation of a visual support toolkit developed for use in inclusive early elementary classrooms. …

Recreation Effects On Soil Carbon, Biocrust Presence, Soil Stability, And Invasive Species In Indian Creek, Bears Ears National Monument, Elisabeth M. Currit

Theses and Dissertations

Desert ecosystems perform essential ecosystem services, including playing a crucial role in the global carbon cycle. Because of this, it is important to understand how recreational activities, common in desert environments, impacts dryland ecosystems' ability to perform ecosystem services. The growing popularity of outdoor recreation in Western US poses a threat to desert ecosystems, and unregulated activities can harm soil health, particularly the presence and functioning of biological soil crusts (biocrusts). This study uses the Indian Creek Special Recreation Management area in Bears Ears National Monument, Utah, USA, as a case study for recreation impacted desert ecosystems. It examines the …

Consequences Of The Double Empathy Problem Within The Clinical Environment: A New Model For Neuroinclusive Care, Sofia Jimenez Aug 2025

Consequences Of The Double Empathy Problem Within The Clinical Environment: A New Model For Neuroinclusive Care, Sofia Jimenez

Theses and Dissertations

As diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) rise, the neurodiversity and autistic self-advocacy movements have challenged traditional deficit-based clinical models and called for more inclusive, affirming approaches to care. Recent research disputes the long-held belief that autistic individuals have deficits in perspective-taking, revealing that miscommunication between autistic and neurotypical individuals results from mutual misunderstanding, a concept known as the double empathy problem (DEP; Milton, 2012), with the triple empathy problem (TEP) extending this framework to healthcare settings. Our study investigates the consequences of the DEP and TEP within clinical environments, focusing on interactions between neurotypical speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and adult …

Coding For Nonstandard Channels: A Capacity-Oriented Approach, J Daniel Harman Aug 2025

Coding For Nonstandard Channels: A Capacity-Oriented Approach, J Daniel Harman

Theses and Dissertations

This work addresses the issue of coding for non-standard channel models with an emphasis on capacity-oriented channel analysis and system design. The first channel studied is the Wyner wiretap channel. Channel sounding results were obtained to calculate the capacity for the multi-antenna case of the Wyner wiretap channel to ascertain the potential for secure communication via secrecy coding. The second channel studied is an asymmetric binary crossover erasure channel (ABCEC) with a short-blocklength constraint. The capacity for this channel was derived, and linear codes were chosen and tested. Another study was conducted on the ABCEC within a degraded wiretap channel …

Exploring Soil-Derived Antimicrobials For Inhibiting Dairy-Associated Pathogens And Spoilage Bacteria, Michael Joseph Moran Aug 2025

Exploring Soil-Derived Antimicrobials For Inhibiting Dairy-Associated Pathogens And Spoilage Bacteria, Michael Joseph Moran

Theses and Dissertations

Spore-forming bacteria are among the most problematic contaminants in fluid milk. They can survive pasteurization, grow at refrigeration temperatures, and secrete heat-stable enzymes, making them a major cause of spoilage in both pasteurized and reconstituted milk products. Current nonthermal strategies for reducing spore counts, including microfiltration and bactofugation, are often costly and inconsistent. The increasing consumer demand for natural additives in food products has sparked interest in the use of bacterially-derived antimicrobial compounds, particularly those from generally recognized as safe (GRAS) organisms, as an alternative method of dairy preservation. This study explores the antimicrobial potential of ten soil-derived Bacillus and …

“I Laughed Along For Years But Hated It Inside:” Understanding Nuance In Peer Teasing Experiences Using A Thematic Analysis, Naomi C.Z. Andrews, Molly Dawes Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

Introduction

Peer teasing is ubiquitous, yet ambiguous in nature. Despite recent attempts to delineate and clarify differences in teasing experienced as playful versus harmful, there remains overlap and complexity in these interactions. In the current study, we present a conceptual model of teasing, which includes many nested features that dynamically interact within a teasing episode. Using this conceptual model to guide our work, the goal of the current study was to use qualitative inquiry to bring further conceptual clarity to the overlap between teasing that is experienced as playful versus harmful.

Method

Using semi-structured interviews, we asked university students ( …

Kagome metals have emerged as a frontier in condensed matter physics due to their potential to host exotic quantum states. Among these, CsV3Sb5 has attracted significant attention for the unusual coexistence of charge density wave (CDW) order and unconventional superconductivity, presenting an ideal system for exploring the emergent phenomena from the interplay of phonons, electronic fluctuations, and topological effects. The nature of CDW formation in CsV3Sb5 is unconventional and has sparked considerable debate. In this study, we examine the origin of the CDW state via ab initio finite-temperature simulations of the lattice dynamics. Through a comparative study …

Chinese Transnational Intellectual Elites In Nanyang And China: A Comparative Study Of Lim Boon Keng, Wu Lien-Teh, Wong Nai Siong And Khoo Seok Wan, Lin Lan

Student Works (2020-2029)

During the late Qing and the Republican period, the longstanding extensive corridors of Chinese labour migration to the Nanyang were supplemented by a significant flow of elite travel and cultural and professional exchange between China and Nanyang. A group of transnational intellectual elites came into being whose lives and life-work spanned geographical and cultural space between a colonised and Westernised Southeast Asia and a China on her transition to modernity. Among them were Lim Boon Keng, Wu Lien-Teh, Wong Nai Siong and Khoo Seok Wan, the four case studies in this dissertation. An investigation of these elites either from Nanyang …

Coming Out And Social Acceptance: Understanding Lgbtq Veterans' Minority Stressors, Conrado Augustine Martin Aug 2025

Coming Out And Social Acceptance: Understanding Lgbtq Veterans' Minority Stressors, Conrado Augustine Martin

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This quantitative study explored the experiences of LGBTQ veterans residing in Ohio, examining the relationship between the coming out process, social acceptance, and minority stress. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ) military veterans face higher rates of minority stressors, resulting in higher rates of suicidal ideation and mental health issues, which impact healthcare practices that affirm their identity. Discrimination, microaggressions, coming out, identity disclosure, and social belonging were identified as key contributing factors. Guided by Meyer’s minority stress theory, the study aimed to assess whether levels of outness, and identification with the LGBTQ community correlated with experiences of minority …

Staff Education To Improve Knowledge Of The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 Assessment, Josie Weber Aug 2025

Staff Education To Improve Knowledge Of The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 Assessment, Josie Weber

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This doctoral project was focused on a staff education initiative to enhance the proper use of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), a validated depression screening tool, in an outpatient behavioral health (OBH) clinic. Despite its clinical utility, the PHQ-9 is often underused or inconsistently applied due to knowledge gaps among nursing staff. Inconsistent screening can delay diagnosis and treatment, negatively affecting patient outcomes. I conducted this project to address these gaps by implementing structured training to promote high-quality, patient-centered care. The practice-focused question was: Does a structured PHQ-9 training session improve staff knowledge in an outpatient behavioral health clinic, as …

White matter (WM) brain age, a neuroimaging-derived biomarker indicating WM microstructural changes, helps predict dementia and neurodegenerative disorder risks. The cumulative effect of chronic stress on WM brain aging remains unknown. In this study, we assessed cumulative stress using a multi-system composite allostatic load (AL) index based on inflammatory, anthropometric, respiratory, lipidemia, and glucose metabolism measures, and investigated its association with WM brain age gap (BAG), computed from diffusion tensor imaging data using a machine learning model, among 22 951 European ancestries aged 40 to 69 (51.40% women) from UK Biobank. Linear regression, Mendelian randomization, along with inverse probability weighting, …

Two Problems: Hankel Operators And Dyadic Paraproducts, Ana Čolović Aug 2025

Two Problems: Hankel Operators And Dyadic Paraproducts, Ana Čolović

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Paraproducts can be thought of "parts of a product" of two functions, that isolate particular properties of each of the functions. They have played an essential role in the study of commutators in harmonic analysis, in particular commutators of multiplication by a function and Calder\'{o}n-Zygmund operators. In complex analysis, Hankel and Toeplitz operators can be used to decompose a product of two functions. They play the same role as paraproducts in analyzing commutators of certain operators, so they can be thought of as complex analytic analogues of paraproduct operators. The thesis consists of two parts. In the first part, we …

Examining The Active Ingredients In An Anti-Stigma Intervention For Individuals With A Criminal History, Kaylee Cook Aug 2025

Examining The Active Ingredients In An Anti-Stigma Intervention For Individuals With A Criminal History, Kaylee Cook

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Obtaining employment is key to successful reintegration for people who have been incarcerated. However, employers are often hesitant to hire formerly incarcerated persons due to general negative attitudes toward them and concern that they will not exhibit positive work behaviors. Interventions to reduce general types of stigma exist, with primary strategies involving education and/or contact. Most research examining the effectiveness of stigma-reducing strategies largely focus on reducing identity-based stigma (e.g., race, mental illness), with limited research on reducing choice-based stigma, such as those with criminal histories. However, regardless of targeted stigma, there is no consensus regarding which intervention format (i.e., …

A Legacy Of Writing, Teaching, And Leading: Amplifying The Voices Of Four Women Who Shaped The National Writing Project, Ellen Ann Shelton Aug 2025

A Legacy Of Writing, Teaching, And Leading: Amplifying The Voices Of Four Women Who Shaped The National Writing Project, Ellen Ann Shelton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The origin story of the National Writing Project (NWP) is attributed to James Gray, who, in 1974, developed the foundations of a program that would eventually become a national network of teacher-leaders. Networks, however, require multiple theories of action to move forward into the future. They cannot survive on one person’s vision alone. To meet the needs of K16 educators in an ever-changing education landscape, the initial vision needed broadening, models of work, multiple points of entry, and a constant focus of keeping teachers at the center of the work. Because of the work of many, the network continues 50 …

Gender And Sexuality In Homeschooling: An Analysis Of Gender Constructs And Sexual Behaviors Within Homeschooling Communities, Hannah Grace Badley Aug 2025

Gender And Sexuality In Homeschooling: An Analysis Of Gender Constructs And Sexual Behaviors Within Homeschooling Communities, Hannah Grace Badley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Homeschooling has grown increasingly popular as a form of alternative education both in the United States and globally. However, research examining the public health implications of this homeschooling is minimal, especially research focusing on sexual behaviors and gender identity development. Similarly, research on homeschooling tends to focus on the caregivers' or parents' perceptions or motivations to homeschool, as opposed to centering the experiences and voices of those who are or were homeschooled. Because of this, very little is known about the ways homeschooled youth experience sexual health education, how gender identity development occurs, and how homeschoolers access reproductive healthcare. To …

Extreme Value Theory View Of High Emitter Diesel Vehicles In The Us From 1991 To 2021, M. Matti Maricq, Gary A. Bishop

Fuel Efficiency Automobile Test Publications

Extreme value theory (EVT) is a statistical method to characterize the tails of distributions, such as high emitter vehicle emissions. The present work addresses the United States (US) diesel fleet. EVT confirms that high emitters contribute disproportionately to adverse air quality. It further reveals that high emitter emissions have responded differently to progressively tighter emissions standards compared to fleet averages. Carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) high emitter emissions fell in concert with the fleet average after widespread implementation of the diesel oxidation catalyst to meet US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 1 emissions standards, but remained unchanged after introduction …

Children with neurodevelopmental disorders exhibit highly penetrant sleep and circadian dysfunction, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. We asked whether a subset of individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders might have genetic variants in genes known to drive circadian rhythms. Through international collaboration, we identified ten individuals with very rare genetic variants in BMAL1, a core component of the molecular clock. These individuals exhibited overlapping signs and symptoms including developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder, and variably penetrant marfanoid features. We functionally tested the identified BMAL1 variants in cell culture and in vivo and found disrupted BMAL1 function. These findings demonstrate that …

The development of non-hormonal male contraceptives requires validated preclinical models. This study investigated whether human orthologs of two mouse testis-specific serine proteases, PRSS55 and TMPRSS12, both essential for male fertility in mice, could functionally rescue the infertility phenotypes of their respective knockout mouse lines. We generated transgenic mouse lines expressing human PRSS55 with either an extracellularly or intracellularly positioned C-terminal 3xFLAG tag (RES GPI or RES TM), and a line expressing human TMPRSS12 with a C-terminal 3xFLAG tag (T12 RES), all on their respective mouse null backgrounds. Fertility was assessed through continuous mating trials, and sperm parameters were evaluated. Both …

Context: As the rate of research production accelerates, the ability to efficiently and unambiguously communicate judgments relating to the synthesis, evaluation, and use of scientific information becomes paramount.

Perspective: Scientific information can be viewed as a "layered infrastructure" of data, evidence, knowledge, and use. The GRADE approach serves as a de facto data standard for this infrastructure, supporting movement between layers by reducing ambiguity in claims to knowledge (in the form of judgements of certainty in the evidence when answering research questions) and level of commitment to possible solutions to problems (in the form of strength of recommendations for interventions). …
