A Groundwater Flow System Investigation In The Upper Rowena Creek Drainage, Oregon, Catelee Yamei Kambur Aug 2025

A Groundwater Flow System Investigation In The Upper Rowena Creek Drainage, Oregon, Catelee Yamei Kambur

Dissertations and Theses

Groundwater level declines are a growing concern within the upper Rowena Creek drainage, Oregon. This area is home to a small community located on the upper limb of the Columbia Hills anticline, where local residents rely on aquifers within the Columbia River Basalt Group (CRBG) for domestic water supplies. Groundwater level declines in CRBG aquifers have been studied more extensively in the Mosier area, which lies approximately 5 miles to the northwest of Rowena, but there has been little research conducted specifically on the upper Rowena Creek drainage area. Rowena is located higher up the dip of the Columbia Hills …

Background/Objectives: Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common malignant bone tumor in children and adolescents; the survival rate is as low as 24%. Accurate prediction of clinical outcomes remains a challenge due to tumor heterogeneity and the complexity of pediatric cases. This study aims to improve predictions of progressive disease, therapy response, relapse, and survival in pediatric OS using MRI-based radiomics and machine learning methods. \

Methods: Pre-treatment contrast-enhanced coronal T1-weighted MR scans were collected from 63 pediatric OS patients, with an additional nine external cases used for validation. Three strategies were considered for target region segmentation (whole-tumor, tumor …

Tic disorders, including Tourette syndrome, are characterized by brief, repetitive, and patterned movements or vocalizations. Botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) has emerged as a therapeutic option for motor tics, particularly when oral medications are insufficient or poorly tolerated. This retrospective cohort study evaluated the safety and effectiveness of botulinum neurotoxin injections in 50 pediatric patients (aged 7-18 years) with motor tic disorders treated at a tertiary pediatric movement disorders clinic between May 2019 and January 2024. Botulinum neurotoxin injections were tailored to individual symptomatology. Overall, 64% of patients reported improvement in tic severity, 36% noted no change, and 6% worsened. Response did …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Glycopeptide, polymyxin, and aminoglycoside antibiotics are among the most commonly used agents to treat drug-resistant bacterial infections; however, their clinical use is hindered by nephrotoxicity. We previously reported that zileuton has the potential to attenuate antibiotic-associated nephrotoxicity in an animal model. Here, we further report the development of a parenteral formulation and exploration of dosing strategies for zileuton. The solubility, stability, and multi-dose safety of two zileuton formulations were evaluated. Zileuton serum and renal tissue pharmacokinetics were evaluated after a single dose and compared to steady state after 10 days. Different dosing strategies of zileuton to attenuate vancomycin-, polymyxin B-, …

Social Networks And The Demand For Credence Agricultural Technologies, Yurani Arias-Granada, Jonathan Bauchet, Jacob Ricker-Gilbert, Kajal Gulati Aug 2025

Social Networks And The Demand For Credence Agricultural Technologies, Yurani Arias-Granada, Jonathan Bauchet, Jacob Ricker-Gilbert, Kajal Gulati

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

Little is known about the adoption of agricultural technologies that enhance unobservable attributes, such as food quality and food safety. Social networks can potentially be a key tool to disseminate information about such technologies, because informal discussions among network members could counter the lack of observability and awareness of the benefits of such technologies. To inform this issue, we conducted a field experiment that included experimental auctions and a lottery to estimate how social networks influence the demand for Aflasafe, a new food safety-enhancing technology, among smallholder farmers in Senegal. Aflasafe is an agricultural input that controls aflatoxins, which are …

Performance-Based Assessment In Refugee Esol Programs: Fostering Real-World Readiness Through Discussions And Presentations, Abdul Mutashobya, Elise Holcomb

MITESOL Journal: An Online Publication of MITESOL

A Performance-Based Assessment (PBA) framework designed to enhance the communicative competence and real-world readiness of adult refugee learners in an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program is described. Grounded in sociocultural and communicative language teaching theories, this approach intentionally blurs the lines between instruction and assessment, using authentic tasks like collaborative discussions and presentations to foster practical skills. The theoretical rationale for PBA is followed by a description of the instructional context and the specific techniques used, including scaffolding strategies, self-assessment and rubric development. Reflecting on the implementation, we share the successes, such as increased learner confidence and …

Is Therapeutic Lying Ethically Justifiable If It Leads To Improved Care?, Deborah Murphy Aug 2025

Is Therapeutic Lying Ethically Justifiable If It Leads To Improved Care?, Deborah Murphy

Journal of Social Care

Problem statement

Although therapeutic lying is used extensively as an intervention in dementia care, its use is ethically controversial, firstly, because lying is usually viewed negatively, and secondly, because people with dementia are an especially vulnerable cohort. It is claimed that therapeutic lying improves wellbeing and supports a person-centred approach to dementia care.

Research Question

Is lying to people with dementia ethically justifiable if it leads to improved care?

Aim

To investigate whether care can be improved using therapeutic lies, to explore the ongoing ethical debate around its justification and to examine whether therapeutic lies support person-centred interventions.

Method

This …

Iraqi’S Car License Plate Recognition Based On Deep Learning, Mushreq Abdulhussain Shuriji, Husam Al-Behadili, Hadel A. Hussain

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

Vehicle license plate recognition is essential due to the rising number of operational cars, which leads to an increasing difficulty of this task even for humans. Systems for car license recognition normally consist of two branch systems, namely, license plate recognition and license plate detection. The aim of the detection part is to pinpoint the car and the position of its license plate, while the objective of the recognition part is to recognize characters on that plate. In this work, the emphasis is on Arabic car license plates. In this category of plates, there are three lines containing numerals and …

Transcendental Formulas For The Coefficients Of Ramanujan's Mock Theta Functions, Gradin Anderson Aug 2025

Transcendental Formulas For The Coefficients Of Ramanujan's Mock Theta Functions, Gradin Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Ramanujan's 1920 last letter to Hardy contains seventeen examples of mock theta functions, including the famous third order function f(q), which resemble modular forms of weight 1/2. This list has since been expanded by individuals such as Gordon and McIntosh and the McKay--Thompson series arising in moonshine theory. In 1964, Andrews---improving on a result of Dragonette---gave an asymptotic formula for the coefficients of f(q) and conjectured an exact formula: a conditionally convergent series that closely resembles the Hardy--Ramanujan--Rademacher formula for the partition function. A key breakthrough came in 2001, when Zwegers wrote f(q) as the holomorphic component of a vector-valued …

Rotor Interaction Aerodynamics: Influence Of Phase And Spacing On Wake And Pressure Behavior, Nathan D. Welker Aug 2025

Rotor Interaction Aerodynamics: Influence Of Phase And Spacing On Wake And Pressure Behavior, Nathan D. Welker

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the aerodynamic behavior and interactions in the flow-fields of dual rotor systems. The experiments used Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) combined with pressure and force measurements to characterize the flow with an emphasis on side-by-side rotor flows at small separation distances. This work is separated into six main chapters: first, the topic is introduced with a thorough literature review in Chapter 1, the methodology and details of the experiments are discussed in detail in Chapter 2; the effects of phase offset on dual-rotor rotor flows is explored in Chapter 3; the influence of separation distance on the side-by-side …

Establishing Operational Foundations In A Faculty-Led Clinic: Workflow Design, Role Development, And Service Planning, Rebecca Wensmann

DNP Projects

A Central Minnesota College, in collaboration with local community partners, sought to provide access to medical care for an underserved population while offering opportunities for graduate and undergraduate nursing education. They achieved this by establishing a faculty-led clinic in a high-poverty level area in Central Minnesota, where nearly 7% of the population under the age of 65 lacked health insurance (U.S. Census Bureau, 2024). Research was completed on clinic workflows and processes, as well as many interviews with clinics and community members throughout Minnesota. With this data, a clinic workflow, job description list, and services offered were created. This information …

Solvent- And Binder-Free Additive Manufacturing Of Polymer-Derived Ceramics: Rheological Tuning And Structural Performance, Laxmi Sai Viswanadha, Jeremy Watts, Mohammad Naraghi Aug 2025

Solvent- And Binder-Free Additive Manufacturing Of Polymer-Derived Ceramics: Rheological Tuning And Structural Performance, Laxmi Sai Viswanadha, Jeremy Watts, Mohammad Naraghi

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic matrix composites are widely used in aerospace applications due to their high strength, heat resistance, and corrosion resistance. However, traditional machining methods make it challenging to fabricate complex shapes. This study presents a solvent-free and binder-free direct ink writing (DIW) method for producing SiC/SiOC composites using polycarbosilane SMP-10, a preceramic polymer that acts as both the ceramic precursor and the liquid phase, thereby eliminating the need for volatile solvents and sacrificial binders. By adjusting the SiC content, printable ink formulations were developed, and their flow properties were analyzed. The influence of geometric factors, such as inter-wall …
