Functionalization Of The Amine Group For Access To 4-Imidazolidinone-Sulfadiazine Hybrid Derivatives And Study Of Their Biological Activities, Sabaa A. Yousif, Rafid S. Dawood
Baghdad Science Journal
The work successfully synthesized twelve novel derivatives of 4-imidazolidinone bearing a sulfadiazine moiety using a one-pot reaction. This was done by condensation of sulfadiazine with twelve different aldehydes to afford the corresponding imines as intermediates, which were then followed by a cyclization reaction with glycine to furnish the desired products 1-12 in 56-85% yields. The structures of these products were identified by FT-IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. In addition, a number of the produced compounds demonstrated diverse antibacterial and antioxidant activities. In terms of the antibacterial activity, the compounds 1, 2, 3, 4, …

Health Services and Informatics Research
BACKGROUND: Substance use disorder (SUD) represents a significant public health concern in the United States. SUD recovery is complex and individualized, and support provided by peer recovery coaches (PRCs) can improve outcomes. The PRC-client relationship requires bidirectional mediated communication that is often informal but should be trackable, efficient, and aligned with health care privacy and security regulations. Current workflows and available apps do not meet these needs, illustrating the opportunity for client-centered technology tools. We have developed Peer PLUS (People Leveraging Urgent Support; Parkview Health System, Inc), a HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act)-compliant mobile app and client management …
Fifth- And Sixth-Year High School Persisters: Engagement In The "Finishing Year" A Qualitative Case Study, Rebecca A. Knowles
Fifth- And Sixth-Year High School Persisters: Engagement In The "Finishing Year" A Qualitative Case Study, Rebecca A. Knowles
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
This qualitative study aimed to illuminate the ways in which fifth and sixth-year high school students engaged emotionally, socially, and cognitively as they persisted in their education at a large, comprehensive high school. High school in the United States is traditionally a four-year educational experience. For some students, however, high school extends into a fifth and sixth year. These students have been referred to as super seniors, over-age students, and persisters. Although much research has been done regarding students who drop out of high school, including students who eventually earn an alternative credential, very little research has included those who …
Urban Climatic And Health Impacts Of Aerosols, Yuezhi Li
Urban Climatic And Health Impacts Of Aerosols, Yuezhi Li
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Aerosols, also known as particulate matter (PM), strongly influence the climate and pose considerable risks to human health. As short-lived climate forcers, aerosols alter the Earth’s radiative budget by absorbing and scattering incident solar radiation, thereby affecting global and regional temperatures, atmospheric circulation, cloud formation, and precipitation patterns. From a public health perspective, exposure to particulate matter, particularly fine and ultrafine particles, has been associated with a wide range of adverse outcomes, including respiratory diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, and premature mortality. In addition, aerosols can transport pathogens and represent a critical pathway for the transmission of airborne infectious diseases. Despite contributing …
Essays On Environmental, Social, And Governance Strategy, Samuel Kim
Essays On Environmental, Social, And Governance Strategy, Samuel Kim
Olin Business School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The strategic consequences of an organization's Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) efforts are driven largely by the specific information stakeholders observe and evaluate. As firms project a growing volume of public claims and observable social outcomes, stakeholders must navigate a complex informational environment to decide how much weight to assign to what organizations say, what they do, and whether their words are consistent with their actions. Clarifying how stakeholders interpret these varied signals is therefore vital to understanding the strategic implications of ESG efforts. To that end, this dissertation asks: how are different pieces of organizational information related to stakeholder …

Enhanced Computational Modeling Of Photoionization And Streamer Formation, Anahita Alibalazadeh
Enhanced Computational Modeling Of Photoionization And Streamer Formation, Anahita Alibalazadeh
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Photoionization is a key mechanism governing the formation and propagation of streamer discharges in air by generating electron-ion pairs ahead of the streamer front. Accurate and computationally efficient modeling of this non-local process is essential for reliable plasma simulations. However, the widely used Zheleznyak photoionization model relies on empirical assumptions and requires computationally expensive domain-wide integration.
This dissertation advances photoionization modeling in three ways. First, the classical integral model is enhanced by incorporating experimentally measured vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) emission spectra together with photoabsorption and photoionization cross-section data, enabling direct calculation of the photoionization source term as a function of pressure …
Developing A Dispersion Interferometer For Characterizing Power Flow Plasma Formation And Transport Studies, Nathan R. Hines
Developing A Dispersion Interferometer For Characterizing Power Flow Plasma Formation And Transport Studies, Nathan R. Hines
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Sandia's refurbished $Z$-pinch machine experiences persistent current loss in its post-hole convolute and inner magnetically insulated transmission line regions, widely attributed to low-density electrode plasmas whose formation and transport remain poorly constrained by existing diagnostics. This dissertation develops and validates a fiber-coupled, continuous-wave, second-harmonic orthogonally polarized dispersion interferometer for time-resolved measurements of electron areal density in millimeter-scale gaps. The diagnostic employs single-laser second-harmonic generation, non-steering differential phase control, and polarization-based phase retrieval to achieve sub-$10^{15}$~cm$^{-2}$ sensitivity, multi-hundred-megahertz bandwidth, and sub-$200$~$\mu$m effective cross-gap spatial resolution. Performance is benchmarked against a $94$~GHz interferometer on the UNM Helicon-Cathode plasma device and then fielded …
The Mediating Role Of Moral Disengagement In The Relationship Between Facets Of Empathy And Aggression, Romiere J. Horace
The Mediating Role Of Moral Disengagement In The Relationship Between Facets Of Empathy And Aggression, Romiere J. Horace
Theses
Aggression is a major social and public health concern with economic, psychological, and interpersonal implications. Extensive research has examined the potential antecedents for aggressive behavior, with many different environmental, biological, and intrapsychic factors being significantly associated with aggression. Researchers have also focused on cognitive mechanisms, like empathy, as a protective factor for aggression. More specifically, research has linked lower levels of empathy to higher levels of aggression; however, the underlying mechanisms of this relationship remain underexplored. A potential explanatory mechanism is moral disengagement, which allows individuals to justify harmful behaviors and avoid self-sanctions. However, limited research has examined these constructs …

Thermal Sensitivity Of Native And Introduced Crabs: Implications For Reproductive Success, Keria Moritsugu-Vandehey
Thermal Sensitivity Of Native And Introduced Crabs: Implications For Reproductive Success, Keria Moritsugu-Vandehey
Dissertations and Theses
Temperature is a major driver of physiological and developmental processes in marine organisms, and continued climate warming is expected to affect reproduction and recruitment in estuarine species. Early life stages are often particularly sensitive to environmental stress, yet relatively little is known about how warming influences embryonic development, hatching success, and larval survival across co-occurring native and introduced crab species.
This study examined the effects of temperature on embryonic development, hatching success, and early larval survival in four estuarine crab species from the Pacific Northwest: the introduced European green crab, Carcinus maenas, and the native shore crabs Hemigrapsus nudus …

Tic-Related Functional Impairment Drives The Relationship Between Tics And Depression In Youth With Tourette Syndrome, Benjamin J Mitchell, Emily I Braley, Erika S Trent, Steve Barash, Mark F Gordon, Jordan Stiede, Eric A Storch
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Although many youth with Tourette syndrome (TS) have at least 1 comorbid psychiatric condition (eg, obsessive-compulsive disorder), the extent to which TS is associated with depression remains unclear. This cross-sectional study examined relationships among tic severity, tic-related functional impairment, and depressive symptoms in 277 youth with TS. Tic-related impairment, but not tic severity, was associated with both self- and parent-reported depressive symptoms. An age × sex interaction emerged, such that among younger participants, females reported higher depressive symptoms than males; however, this effect was observed only for self-report, not parent report. Additionally, both depressive symptoms and tic severity were associated …

Harboring a low mutational burden, glioblastoma relies on various epigenetic regulators to fuel its development and progression, several of which remain mechanistically enigmatic. Here, we show that the histone methyltransferase DOT1L shapes chromatin accessibility of glioblastoma stem cell enhancer elements to reversibly regulate fate- and growth-related transcriptional programs. A genome-wide chemogenomic knockout screen reveals that the mediator complex tail module subunit, MED23, is essential for glioblastoma stem cell growth arrest following DOT1L inhibition, critically relying on CCND2 repression. MED23 knockout (KO) glioblastoma stem cells do not display the chromatin accessibility changes at enhancer elements following DOT1L inhibition. Consequently, MED23-KO rescues …

A Charles Williams Diptych: G. M. Hopkins And T. S. Eliot, Eric Rauscher
Mythcon
This presentation consists of two short papers touching upon an interest of mine in the development of Williams' poetry. In the first paper about Hopkins I argue for a direct influence that played a role in the transition from Williams' early poetry to his late Arthurian poems. The second paper dealing with Eliot tangentially addresses a similar influence, but in a much more nuanced fashion. Here I am only offering hints. I am quite sure there are many other avenues of study for the transformation from his early poetry to his later mature style which is a poetically complex style …

Are Book Clubs The New Discussion Groups?, Megan B. Abrahamson, Dusty Brooks, Grace Moone
Mythcon
Mythprint used to publish Discussion Group reports pretty regularly, and the Discussion Group model was a great way for local Inklings fans to find each other. How has technology and changing social mores (especially post-COVID) altered how we do "Discussion Groups"? Is the difference between a Book Club and a Discussion Group just down to whether we submit a report to Mythprint, or are there other elements we need to bring back? Attend this panel if you want to get or give advice about running your own mythopoeic Book Club or Discussion Group!
Boundary Crossings: Charles Williams And Bruce Cockburn As Grim Traveling Companions, John Mabry
Boundary Crossings: Charles Williams And Bruce Cockburn As Grim Traveling Companions, John Mabry
Mythcon
This paper explores the deep influence of Charles Williams on the lyrics of singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn, one of the few Christian rock musicians to enjoy mainstream success. Both artists suffer “outsider” status in Christian culture because they regularly cross the boundaries of what is considered “acceptable” Christianity, both in terms of their personal lives and their theologies. Yet their work profoundly depicts crossings between the mundane and spiritual worlds, to the point of denying such boundaries exist at all. In his doctrine of co-inherence, Williams denies ontological separateness, a theme echoed repeatedly in Cockburn’s lyrics. This is more than just …
A Pedagogical “Eras” Tour: Thirteen Years Of Evolving As A Writing Methods Instructor [Special Issue], Susanna Benko
A Pedagogical “Eras” Tour: Thirteen Years Of Evolving As A Writing Methods Instructor [Special Issue], Susanna Benko
Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education
ABSTRACT: This reflective essay uses Taylor Swift's Eras Tour as a conceptual framework for examining thirteen years of teaching a writing methods course for preservice teachers. Drawing on longitudinal reflection, I identify four distinct pedagogical eras in my practice, each representing shifts in how I conceptualize what preservice teachers need to learn about teaching writing and how clinical experiences shape that learning. Through this extended reflection, I argue that meaningful pedagogical change becomes visible only across time, not semester-to-semester. Key insights include the sustained centrality of writing practice in methods courses and the influence of institutional changes on course design. …

Strengthening Our Pedagogy Together: A Methods Instructor And Her Former Student Partner To Promote Agency In The Secondary Writing Classroom [Special Issue], Michael Rojas, Kate Sjostrom
Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education
In many English classrooms today, writing instruction is reduced to templates and formulas, robbing students of agency, voice, and transferable skills. This article describes a collaboration between a writing methods course instructor and one of her former students bent on proving that what they believe makes for solid writing instruction—a sometimes messy process involving choice and authentic purpose and audience—works. Documenting development of a new secondary writing course and a project to introduce the course’s methods to pre-service teachers, the authors recount barriers they encountered, strategies they developed for overcoming them, and issues they are still grappling with. In the …

What Are You Writing? The Hopes And Hurdles Of Transitioning From Writing Methods To Teaching Writing, Rebekah Buchanan, Darrin G. Ross
Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education
This co-authored piece examines how the writing methods course impacts teaching and thinking about writing through the lenses of a writing methods professor and a former student/current teacher. In writing and thinking together we found that a mutual grounding in liberatory education, using writing as a tool for social action and critical thinking, and teaching writing as a political act we see how the writing methods course and the relationships built through writing create a basis for future decision making and inspiration in the high school classroom.
