Background: Firearms are involved in more than 70% of U.S. Veteran suicides. Caregivers, defined as family members or concerned significant others, can play an important role in firearm suicide prevention through initiating conversations about secure firearm storage with Veterans. Our objective was to explore caregivers' experiences with lethal means safety (LMS) conversations and identify perceived barriers to caregivers discussing LMS with healthcare providers and with Veterans. Methods: We conducted focus groups with 32 caregivers with experience caring for a Veteran at risk for suicide. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: We identified three primary themes: 1) caregivers recognize …

Background: Neurocognitive disorders are prevalent among older surgical patients, yet their underlying mechanisms and effective interventions remain largely unknown. Studies in rodents and patients suggest a connection between olfactory impairment and perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND). Previous work in mice demonstrates that anesthesia and surgery can lead to both olfactory impairment and cognitive deficits. Olfactory enrichment, which is also referred to as olfactory training (i.e., daily exposure to multiple odorants), may prove helpful. For example, olfactory enrichment appears to reduce PND-like behaviors in mice, possibly by mitigating anesthesia- and surgery-induced reductions in olfactory receptor neurons. Additionally, olfactory enrichment increases the volume …

Background: Given the increasing demand for accessible mental health services, fully virtual telepsychiatry has become a vital component of modern health care delivery. Therapeutic alliance, the collaborative and affective bond between patients and therapists, is a well-established predictor of clinical outcomes in traditional face-to-face and teletherapy. However, the relationship between therapeutic alliance and clinical outcomes in an outpatient telepsychiatry setting remains less understood.
Objective: Our primary objective was to evaluate the relationship between therapeutic alliance and clinical outcomes for depression and anxiety in an outpatient telepsychiatry practice.
Methods: This retrospective study analyzed data from treatment-seeking adults receiving services from Talkiatry, …

Metaphor Use In Indonesian Scholars' Talk About Migration, Heri Yusup
Metaphor Use In Indonesian Scholars' Talk About Migration, Heri Yusup
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Despite the growing body of research on the use of metaphors to discuss personal experiences during complex and challenging situations (such as during the COVID-19 pandemic or related to life-threatening illnesses), metaphor analysis is rarely employed to examine how certain individuals use metaphors to talk about their migration experiences. Extensive studies on metaphorical framing of migration have been conducted. However, private discourse is rarely the subject of these studies. Furthermore, metaphor research incorporating conceptual metaphor theory as its theoretical framework seldom underscores the intersection of metaphorical conceptualization and identity construction. Therefore, this dissertation examines the conceptual metaphors used by individuals …

Palliative and end-of-life care aim to minimize suffering and optimize the quality of life for individuals nearing the end of their lives. Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) represents a potentially valuable nonpharmacological approach within this integrative care framework. Emerging evidence from clinical observations, small-scale studies, and foundational osteopathic principles suggests that OMM may help support patient comfort, alleviate certain symptoms, and contribute to dignity in care. Techniques such as myofascial release, cranial manipulation, and lymphatic drainage have been reported to improve comfort and emotional well-being; however, these findings are based primarily on limited and heterogeneous studies. This narrative review synthesizes current …

The primary barriers hindering graphene's widespread adoption as a performance-enhancing additive in cement-based systems have traditionally been its prohibitive cost and the sustainability concerns associated with conventional manufacturing processes. However, these impediments have recently been mitigated by advancements in detonation synthesis techniques, enabling scalable, cost-effective, and environmentally favorable production of novel graphene types—specifically fractal graphene (FG) and reactive graphene (RG). This paper explores the influence of ultra-low dosages of FG and RG (≤ 0.04 % by mass of cement, which results in ∼20 % increase in compressive strengths) on the pore-structure features of cement pastes. Compared to the control paste, …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Sulfate attack on cement matrix is still a "confused world" especially when magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) is the sulfate source. Accurate assessment of sulfate attack is essential for evaluating the structural integrity and durability of concrete in relevant environments. This study presents a portable fiber-optic Raman probe approach with 125 μm spatial resolution, designed for depth-resolved sulfate ingress monitoring in tricalcium silicate (C₃S, Alite) pastes. The probe is also used to evaluate the effectiveness of surface carbonation in mitigating sulfate attack. The results demonstrate a strong correlation between sulfate penetration depth and Raman spectral intensity ratios of sulfate-related vibrational …

Orphan Basalts: Understanding The Origins Of Unassigned Eastern Oregon Basalts, Angela Rae Stetson
Dissertations and Theses
For more than a century, scientists have studied the geologic stratigraphy of eastern Oregon, which chronicles a rich history of volcanic activity spanning millions of years. Recent and ongoing geologic mapping of the northeastern Harney Basin -- along a corridor east of Highway 395 between the towns of Burns and John Day -- provides a more detailed understanding of an area originally mapped only in reconnaissance during the 1960s. At that time, geologic units were poorly delineated, often with entire quadrangles mapped as a single unit. For example, over 90% of the Calamity Butte quadrangle was previously mapped as 'Tba' …

Background: Calcium (Ca2+) dysregulation is a hallmark of heart failure, impairing excitation-contraction coupling and contributing to pathological remodeling. The sarco/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPase isoform 2a (SERCA2a) mediates Ca2+ reuptake into the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) during diastole, but its activity declines in failing hearts. DWORF (dwarf open reading frame), a newly identified cardiac microprotein, enhances SERCA2a activity and improves cardiomyocyte Ca2+ cycling and contractility. SR Ca2+ release also influences mitochondrial metabolism and ATP production. Here, we investigated whether DWORF overexpression improves SR Ca2+ handling, augments mitochondrial Ca2+ signaling, and protects against heart failure progression.
Methods: Transgenic and adeno-associated virus approaches were …

Calvarial suture skeletal stem cells (Su-SSCs) are a distinct stem cell population for craniofacial bone formation by intramembranous ossification, compared to long bone periosteal SSCs (LB-PSSCs) with endochondral (osteochondrogenic) ossification. However, whether SSC intrinsic or extrinsic factors affect their differentiation process has not been well elucidated. Here, using an inducible Prx1-CreER-EGFP+/−;Rosa26-tdTomato mouse model, we observed that endogenous Prx1+ Su-SSCs and their orthotopic transplantation into calvarial injury do not form cartilage intermediates at the injury sites, while the transplantation of Prx1+ LB-PSSCs into LB injury induces osteochondrogenic differentiation, respectively. However, the heterotopic transplantation of Prx1+ Su-SSCs (Su-SSCs …

The use of guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) has substantially prolonged and improved the lives of patients with heart failure (HF). Nevertheless, adherence rates remain suboptimal. Even when successfully maximized and adhered to, there is a substantial residual risk of recurrent HF hospitalization and death. In light of this, there is a strong need for effective interventions that can decrease the high residual risk seen in patients with HF. Several device options exist that are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and that have been shown to decrease morbidity and/or mortality in patients among whom GDMT is maximized. These …

Background: Nicotine is known to influence metabolism and body weight, yet existing murine models of nicotine exposure often fail to replicate human smoking behaviors accurately. To address this gap, we designed a cost-effective, self-administered nicotine inhalation system that allows mice to voluntarily inhale nicotine vapor generated from e-liquid.
Results: Using this system, we investigated the metabolic effects of nicotine exposure in adult and adolescent mice. Adult mice exposed to nicotine vapor for 10 days exhibited significant weight loss, which was rapidly regained upon cessation, paralleling human smoking patterns. In contrast, adolescent mice did not lose weight during nicotine exposure but …

Unhealthy Weight Management Behavior And Social Media In Emerging Adults: A Systematic Review, Chaehyeon Kang, Hyeonkyeong Lee, Hyeyeon Lee, Gahui Hwang, Jisu Lee, Hyemi Sun, Zainab Auwalu Ibrahim
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Background: Social media plays a crucial role in shaping body image perceptions and health behaviors, particularly during emerging adulthood—a critical period when individuals establish lifelong health habits. Unhealthy weight management behaviors (UWMB) are gaining attention as they stem from a complex interplay of structural (e.g., social norms) and personal (e.g., body image) factors. Emerging adults are particularly vulnerable to social pressures and media influences, leading to a high prevalence of UWMB in this population. Given social media’s role in shaping body image norms and health behaviors, understanding its influence on UWMB is crucial. As a preliminary step toward investigating this …

Do Our “Window And Mirror” Books Leave Shards Of Broken Glass?, Brianne R. Pitts, Jill Hermann-Wilmarth
Michigan Reading Journal
In this article the authors apply Bishop’s (1990) windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors as an analytical framework that, along with critical literacy practices, can be used to enhance the social studies and literacy instruction. The stories we share in elementary classrooms teach students about their future possibilities. As teacher educators, we wondered about our students and our complacency with powerful ideas from foundational scholars in literacy and education. Using Bishop’s (1990) metaphor as an analytic tool, students’ critical disciplinary literacy projects are assessed for future instructional goals, leaving readers with eight practical tools for classroom instruction and critical assessment …
Cricket, Capitalism And Class: From The Village Green To The Cricket Industry, Martin Barrett
Cricket, Capitalism And Class: From The Village Green To The Cricket Industry, Martin Barrett
Global Sport Business Journal
Author Chris McMillan, through Cricket, Capitalism and Class: From the Village Green to the Cricket Industry, provides a definitive and compelling critical sociological investigation of modern cricket’s rise from an English leisure pursuit and role in the expanding capitalism of Empire to today’s multi-billion-dollar cricket industry. This account is constructed through a largely Marxist reading of the sport’s entwining with the processes of capitalism and class. Specifically, class and the class structures reproduced by and through cricket are seen as critical in reproducing a system favorable to both historical and contemporary exploitation and expropriation. As the book transitions from exploring …

Accelerating Localized Climate Innovation Through South-South Peer-Learning Platforms, Nayantara K. Arora
COP30
South-South knowledge exchange is a powerful but underutilized driver of localized climate innovation in the Global South. As climate change disproportionately affects low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), mechanisms for mutual learning, indigenous knowledge-sharing, and context-appropriate technology diffusion are vital. South-South peer-learning platforms offer a scalable pathway to empower communities in the Global South to co-create and adopt effective climate innovations, particularly in the systems of human health, livelihoods, and youth inclusion emphasized by Egypt’s Sharm El-Sheikh Adaptation Agenda (SAA). This policy paper argues that integrating these platforms into national Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) and Capacity Building strategies can accelerate …

The dental sector is a significant carbon emitter globally, with each clinic emitting the same emissions as multiple cars do over a year, and each visit contributing tangible environmental impacts. The biggest emitters are patient and staff travel, clinic utilities, and supply chain activities like single-use plastics. Despite this extensive contribution, there is still low dental awareness. That is why this policy briefing includes a framework for integrating oral health with environmental sustainability aims, foregrounding multi-stakeholder engagement and using the UK as a case study. Climate literacy and dental education reform are the most significant and recommended basis for starting …
Young Indigenous Women And The Low-Carbon Future: Female Political Representation And Knowledge In The Energy Sector In Brazil, Fernando Da Gama
Young Indigenous Women And The Low-Carbon Future: Female Political Representation And Knowledge In The Energy Sector In Brazil, Fernando Da Gama
COP30
The transition to a low-carbon economy is an ethical imperative in the face of the climate crisis, demanding actions that encompass social justice, gender equity, and Indigenous leadership. It is therefore urgent to include young Indigenous women in the design and implementation of sustainable energy solutions, as demonstrated by case studies in the Brazilian Amazon. Despite the central role of Indigenous peoples in environmental protection, international climate finance still overlooks community-based initiatives, allocating less than 1% of global resources directly to these populations. Indigenous women face additional challenges due to gender and technical access barriers. There is a clear need …
