Machine Learning-Based Optimization Of Alginate, Guar Gum, And Pectin-Based Edible Coatings For Extended Strawberry Shelf Life, Saklain Niam, Iftekhar Ahmad, Md Abu Rayhan, Sajid Mahmood, Parvej Hasan Jon, Md Monir Ahmed

Food Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Strawberries deteriorate rapidly under warm, humid conditions, and to make things worse, in many tropical settings refrigerated logistics are limited. Edible biopolymer coatings offer a low-cost method to slow quality loss, but multicomponent formulations behave nonlinearly. In this study, ten types of coatings were developed and evaluated for their effects on the physicochemical (weight loss, firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), pH, color change (Delta E)) and biochemical properties (total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant property (DPPH) of strawberries over a 6-day storage period at 25 degrees C (298.15K). The optimal formulation, consisting of 0.56 % (w/v) alginate, 0.33 % (w/v) guar …

To Mask, Or Not To Mask: An Exploratory Examination Of Factors That Predict Changes In Mask Wearing Over The Pandemic In College Students, Zach J. Gray, Hannah M. Henderson, Grant S. Shields

Psychological Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted society for years. Much evidence shows face masks reduced the spread of the virus; nonetheless, many individuals stopped wearing masks before recommendations (or even mandates) for their use ended. Although predictors of mask wearing have been explored, this preregistered, exploratory study was the first to examine psychological predictors of changes in mask wearing over the course of the pandemic. In particular, we examined a number of potential predictors (e.g., Big Five personality traits, risk taking, etc.) of changes in self-reported mask wearing from March 2020 to August 2021-March 2022 in a sample (N = 357) of …

Dipl 6251 Justice, Truth, And Reconciliation In Post-Conflict Societies, Aaron Hale Ph.D. Oct 2025

Dipl 6251 Justice, Truth, And Reconciliation In Post-Conflict Societies, Aaron Hale Ph.D.

Diplomacy Syllabi

This course seeks to address the choices and decisions that post-conflict states and the international community make in attempts to address past human rights abuses, concerns over reconciliation, and the socio-political challenges regarding justice, as well as more subjective issues like truth. How, and when, in light of weak national institutions do post-conflict states address past human rights abuses? Is there a tradeoff between states and societies that pursue justice over truth, or vice versa? Is there a “window of opportunity” to pursue reconciliation? Can justice truly be achieved in light of the enormous challenges that post-conflict states and societies …

An Analysis Of Consumer Behavior In The Brazilian E-Commerce Market: An Investigation Of Customer Loyalty, Seasonality, And Regional Preferences, Hai Doan

Student Publications

This paper investigates key drivers of consumer behavior within Brazil's emerging e-commerce market by analyzing the Olist Public Dataset. As technology increasingly allows for data-driven marketing strategies, understanding the nuanced behaviors of diverse consumer bases, especially in an emerging market like Brazil, is critical for firm success. This study tests three hypotheses regarding the relationship between positive customer reviews and e-loyalty, the fluctuation of seasonal sales during holiday periods, and the influence of geographic urbanization on product preferences. Utilizing regression analyses on 100,000 orders from 2016 to 2018, the results showed no significant relationship between positive review scores and repeat …

Tensions Between Education Policies And Standards And Educators’ Multilingual Practices: Two Case Studies From India And The United States, Natalia M. Rojas, Jessica Chandras Oct 2025

Tensions Between Education Policies And Standards And Educators’ Multilingual Practices: Two Case Studies From India And The United States, Natalia M. Rojas, Jessica Chandras

UNF Faculty Research and Scholarship

Through two case studies from India and the United States, we explore how educational policies and standards focused on multilingualism are interpreted and enacted within early childhood education classrooms. Recent education policies in both contexts are aimed at fostering culturally responsive and linguistically inclusive pedagogy for greater academic success for students whose home language(s) differs from the language of instruction. However, the policy implementation varies significantly based on educators’ language ideologies and cultural beliefs. We examine a critical gap between policy intentions and classroom realities. Our findings suggest that while broad educational policies provide important frameworks, their effectiveness relies upon …

Electrode Engineering To Minimize Degradation In Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Saheed Adewale Lateef Oct 2025

Electrode Engineering To Minimize Degradation In Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Saheed Adewale Lateef

Theses and Dissertations

Lithium-Sulfur (Li-S) batteries have recently received significant attention as a potential candidate for next-generation energy storage technology. This is due to its high theoretical capacity (1675 mAh/g) which can provide theoretical energy density of 2500 Wh/kg as compared to 400 Wh/kg of the current Lithium-ion batteries. Moreover, the earth-abundant sulfur element as well as its environmental friendliness endows unique advantages on the cost and environmental impact. However, there are several roadblocks that need to be addressed for commercial adoption of Li-S batteries, such as: (i) poor conductivity of sulfur and its discharged product; (ii) solubility of lithium polysulfides and their …

Dominican Population Decline In New York City After 2020, Laird W. Bergad Oct 2025

Dominican Population Decline In New York City After 2020, Laird W. Bergad

Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies

The Dominican population of New York City has experienced a significant decline since reaching its peak of 761,333 in 2021, falling by nearly 13% to 663,169 by 2024. This decline does not appear to be driven by reduced immigration from the Dominican Republic, as yearly arrivals have remained at relatively high levels between 2011 and 2023.

This Latino Data Project Report suggests that there has been an important emigration of Dominicans away from New York City to other areas of the United States. It is likely that the Dominican population of New York City will continue to decline into the …

Sovereign Solutions: Reclaiming Reproductive Autonomy In Oklahoma Indian Country After Dobbs, Morgan Sandler Oct 2025

Sovereign Solutions: Reclaiming Reproductive Autonomy In Oklahoma Indian Country After Dobbs, Morgan Sandler

Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)

In the United States, Native American women face disproportionately high rates of sexual violence and adverse maternal health outcomes. In addition to these ongoing challenges, they continue to face significant barriers to reproductive healthcare access. Oklahoma’s near-total abortion ban—without exceptions for rape or incest—exacerbates these negative trends, particularly for Native women and the Two-Spirit community. Following the Supreme Court’s decision in McGirt v. Oklahoma, approximately 42 percent of Oklahoma’s land area is recognized as Indian Country. This Comment explores how Oklahoma’s abortion ban disproportionately impacts Native women due to systemic inequities stemming from the federal government’s long history of …

A Holistic Look At Swiss Primary Education In The 1870s-80s, As Reflected In Johanna Spyri’S Heidi, Hazel Handy Oct 2025

A Holistic Look At Swiss Primary Education In The 1870s-80s, As Reflected In Johanna Spyri’S Heidi, Hazel Handy

Mountains and Modernity

Education is a cornerstone theme in Johanna Spyri’s treasured novel Heidi, which tells the story of a young girl living in the Swiss Alps with her grandfather. Heidi has many triumphs throughout her youth, but these are not without hardship with regard to educational attainment. This paper examines how the educational experiences described in Heidi fits into its historical context, having been set in the 1870s-80s in Switzerland and Germany. Legal precedents, labor relations, and a mountainous environment set the stage for educational access and success for both Heidi and her friend Peter. Heidi depicts how the emotional experiences of …

Reflections Of The Era: Representations Of Turbulent Peace And Looming Conflict In Choucas And The Accident, Shenandoah Waugh

Mountains and Modernity

This paper examines the relationship between society and the environment through the lens of two novels: Choucas by Zofia Nałkowska and The Accident by Mihail Sebastian. Choucas was written in the interwar period and focuses on international cooperation in the setting of a sanatorium and resort in the Swiss Alps. The Accident was written in the early years of World War II and takes place in Bucharest and the Carpathian mountains near Brașov, Romania. Both novels utilize the mountainous settings to reflect on the tensions of their respective eras. Choucas relates the mountains and valleys to the turbulent peace of …

Perceptions Of Skiing And Gender In The Alps And Carpathians In The Interwar Period, Eleanor Millard Oct 2025

Perceptions Of Skiing And Gender In The Alps And Carpathians In The Interwar Period, Eleanor Millard

Mountains and Modernity

The present paper analyzes two texts set in the mountains of central Europe in the 1920s and 30s. Arnold Fanck’s film The Holy Mountain, filmed in the Swiss Alps and released in 1926, and Mihail Sebastian’s novel The Accident, published in 1940 and set partially in the Southern Carpathians, both depict women engaged in mountain sports from a male point of view. However, the two differ in their presentation: whereas The Holy Mountain treats women as a decorative aspect of the film and women’s skiing as a product of necessity rather than enjoyment, The Accident allows its female protagonist to …

Robust Contracting Under Distributional Uncertainty, Jiangtao Li, Kexin Wang Oct 2025

Robust Contracting Under Distributional Uncertainty, Jiangtao Li, Kexin Wang

Research Collection School of Economics

We study contract design when the principal has limited information about the output distributions induced by the agent's actions. In a baseline model where only the means are known, we show that increasing affine contracts are robustly optimal. The mean restrictions accommodate a wide range of output distributions, including extreme cases that help establish this optimality. We then extend the analysis to environments with additional constraints on the distributions. Our main result shows that the robust optimality of increasing affine contracts persists even when the principal knows more—for example, that each action induces a distribution with full support.

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Tebentafusp has significantly improved overall survival in HLA-A*02:01+ metastatic uveal melanoma (mUM) patients even in those with a best objective response of progressive disease. Thus, strategies to maintain tebentafusp therapy are critical. Here, we examine the efficacy and safety of adding concurrent local therapy (CLT) to tebentafusp upon radiological progression with tebentafusp alone.

PATIENTS AND METHODS: This multicenter retrospective study included mUM patients treated with tebentafusp and CLT, consisting of extrahepatic soft tissue irradiation and liver-directed therapies (LDTs). Efficacy of target and nontarget sites were assessed per RECIST version 1.1. PFS with tebentafusp alone (PFS1) was compared to that …

Escape Of Kdm6a From X Chromosome Is Detrimental To Ischemic Brains Via Irf5 Signaling, Conelius Ngwa, Afzal Misrani, Kanaka Valli Manyam, Yan Xu, Shaohua Qi, Romana Sharmeen, Juneyoung Lee, Long-Jun Wu, Louise Mccullough, Fudong Liu

The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine

The role of chromatin biology and epigenetics in disease progression is gaining increasing recognition. Genes that escape X chromosome inactivation (XCI) can impact neuroinflammation through epigenetic mechanisms. Our previous study has suggested that the X escapee genes Kdm6a and Kdm5c are involved in microglial activation after stroke in aged mice. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We hypothesized that Kdm6a/5c demethylate H3K27Me3/H3K4Me3 in microglia, respectively, and mediate the transcription of interferon regulatory factor 5 (IRF5) and IRF4, leading to microglial pro-inflammatory responses and exacerbated stroke injury. Aged (17–20 months) Kdm6a/5c microglial conditional knockout (CKO) female mice (one allele of the …

Judicial Enforcement Of Evidence Law, G. Alexander Nunn Oct 2025

Judicial Enforcement Of Evidence Law, G. Alexander Nunn

Vanderbilt Law Review

The truth matters. At least it should. In the courtroom, truth can serve as the cornerstone of justice, liberating the innocent, vindicating victims, and holding the guilty to account. Indeed, truth is such a normative imperative that an entire legal discipline now focuses on fostering its discovery at trial— evidence law. By regulating both the reliability of proof and the rationality of cognitive inferences, evidence law seeks to help factfinders discern truth and reach an accurate verdict. And given the importance of that role, one might naturally assume that the strict enforcement of evidence law would be a legal mandate …
