It utilizes data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), along with Landsat 5 and 7. Park-scale results were derived by extracting MODIS surface temperatures within the park boundary, while lake-scale results were estimated using Landsat 5 (1984-2012) and Landsat 7 (1999-2023) observations. In addition, field observations were utilized to perform a comprehensive validation and evaluation of satellite-based surface temperature …

The Protection Illusion: Sexual Harassment Policies And Low-Wage Workers, Sherley Cruz Oct 2025

The Protection Illusion: Sexual Harassment Policies And Low-Wage Workers, Sherley Cruz

Denver Law Review

“To be heard as complaining is not to be heard. To hear someone as complaining is an effective way of dismissing someone. You do not have to listen to the content of what she is saying if she is just complaining . . . .” –Sara Ahmed, Complaint! This Article reveals how workplace sexual harassment policies may appear legally compliant but actually create significant barriers to reporting. The non-reporting of harassment eviscerates the protections the policies are supposed to provide employees by creating a loophole for employers to escape liability. A critical review of these policies under procedural and testimonial …

Examining Choices Of Sarcastic Responses In Dialogue With Virtual Interlocutors, Samantha Langley Oct 2025

Examining Choices Of Sarcastic Responses In Dialogue With Virtual Interlocutors, Samantha Langley

Theses and Dissertations

We report the results from three experiments examining people’s preferences for using sarcasm in conversation as a function of: 1. whether their interlocutor uses sarcasm during the conversation; 2. Their knowledge about whether the interlocutor has used sarcasm in a previous conversation; 3. The presence of prosodical and visual cues for interlocutors’ sarcasm. In each experiment, participants took part in two conversations, and we manipulated whether the interlocutors were sincere or sarcastic and whether they remained the same or changed from one conversation to the next. Experiment one used written conversations and experiment two and three used pre-recorded video clips …

The Complexity Of Long-Distance Dependencies And Their Impact On Language Models, Abhijit Shrikant Mahalunkar Oct 2025

The Complexity Of Long-Distance Dependencies And Their Impact On Language Models, Abhijit Shrikant Mahalunkar

Doctoral

Sequential data modeling is an important challenge in various fields and in particular in natural language processing. Building effective sequential models faces a notable challenge in the form of Long-Distance Dependencies (LDDs) within the sequence data. Hence, successfully overcoming this challenge is imperative for developing robust and accurate sequential models across various domains and applications. To tackle this challenge, the first step is to conduct a detailed analysis of the complexity of LDDs observed in various sequence datasets. This thesis offers a thorough exploration and documentation of this analysis. An important finding from this thesis is the consistent patterns of …

Part 4: Epilogue, Corey Brady, Luis Moreno-Armella

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In closing our set of of articles, we reflect back on the nature of mathematical thinking and learning with representations, especially the computational, executable representations that are enabled by modern dynamic mathematics environments. These aspects of the development of mathematical ideas have profound implications for our approaches to the teaching and learning of Calculus. Our narrative approach has dramatized the radically fruitful and generative nature of the period during which the ideas of Calculus were stabilized (especially in the stories of Guillermo/Leibniz and Leonardo/Euler). An analogy between the development of the field and the development of individual learners, should caution …

Rethinking Equality In Mathematics Education With Category Theory, Kelly Paton Oct 2025

Rethinking Equality In Mathematics Education With Category Theory, Kelly Paton

The Mathematics Enthusiast

To provide an alternative to the flattening operations of equality, which are prevalent not only in mathematics but also in our everyday world, I introduce the relational structures of category theory and their more nuanced notions of equivalence. Instead of defaulting to a binary assignation of equal or not-equal, equivalence posits that contextual relationships are integral to how we conceive of ‘same’ and ‘different’. I draw upon the ideas of philosophers who work against the erasure of diversity and offer ways to uphold difference while searching for commonalities. As I trace the sociopolitical implications of embracing an ontological framework built …

Fairer Public Benefit In Copyright Law, Amanda Levendowski Tepski Oct 2025

Fairer Public Benefit In Copyright Law, Amanda Levendowski Tepski

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In 1966, a court considered expressly whether a secondary use of copyrighted works served a public benefit. While public benefit has become a subfactor of the fair use doctrine, it remains undefined, uncodified, and undertheorized. Courts often invoked public benefit in pivotal cases involving novel technologies, from home video recorders to digital libraries to algorithms--but they did not need to. After the recent Supreme Court decision in Google v. Oracle, however, public benefit is unavoidable: The Court stated that “we must take into account the public benefits the copying will likely produce.” A qualitative analysis of key public benefit cases …

The Mystical Kitchen: Feminist Magic And Alchemical Transformation In The Work Of Lenora Carrington, Theresa Burwell Oct 2025

The Mystical Kitchen: Feminist Magic And Alchemical Transformation In The Work Of Lenora Carrington, Theresa Burwell

Theses

This thesis analyzes the inherent feminism in alchemical and magical symbolism, particularly in representations of kitchens in the art and writing of Leonora Carrington. The kitchen has historically been viewed as a gendered space for domestic work. By subverting cultural and religious conventions, Carrington’s kitchen becomes a site for transmutation and feminine ritual. Using feminist discourse, formal art historical analysis, and the history of alchemical symbolism, this thesis asserts that Carrington’s imagery transforms the kitchen from an oppressive domestic space to a mystical laboratory of feminine power. A thorough analysis of Grandmother Moorhead’s Aromatic Kitchen (1975) and The House Opposite …

Plants, Land, And Ojibwe Nations In The Adult English Language Classroom, Azul Kmiecik

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

As an English language teacher in Minnesota, I have had many immigrant and refugee learners express a desire to understand the peoples, cultures, and histories of their new homes. As a settler colonist in Minnesota, I have an ethical obligation to counter the erasure of Indigenous peoples within our educational institutions and to grapple with the legacies of settler colonialism. These two threads come together in a project designed to respond to the question: How can land-based education and centering the voices of Native peoples be used to design lessons that foster adult ELLs’ reflection on Ojibwe nations’ unique relationships …
