Secondary Posttraumatic Stress Education Within Graudate Counseling Programs, Brandi S. Colesanti Phd
Counseling and Psychology Dissertations
Secondary posttraumatic stress is a known occupational hazard for mental health counselors. Affecting approximately 49.5% of practicing counselors, it is a normal reaction to indirectly experiencing graphic stories (Lanier & Carney, 2024). Due to underdeveloped coping skills and limited experience working with traumatized individuals, counselors in training are especially vulnerable to its impact. Extant literature contains studies exploring the effects of secondary posttraumatic stress on graduate students, made and recommendations for self-care, resilience strategies, and therapeutic interventions to be integrated into graduate counseling curriculum to mitigate symptoms. Although studies demonstrated the effectiveness of these recommendations on symptom mitigation, no formal …

The vertical sorting of streambed grains is a key control on river channel stability and sediment transport rates. In this study, we report on burial depths and mobility characteristics of coarse sediment in a small gravel-bed stream using an extensive data set of nearly 1,500 magnetically tagged tracer grains, deployed and annually surveyed between 2004 and 2018. We observe that sediment burial correlates with grain size and event magnitude, and we identify correlations between the burial depths of coarse grains and their mobility, residence time, and travel distance characteristics. A particularly large event in 2007 produced significant vertical sorting which …

Backgrounds/Objectives: Acute otitis media (AOM) is the leading reason antibiotics are prescribed to children. Despite guidelines advocating for watchful waiting and shorter antibiotic durations, overprescribing remains a concern. This meta-analysis aims to quantify potential reduction in antibiotic days of therapy (DOT) for AOM if prescribers adhered to guidelines. Methods: Cochrane databases were sourced for studies on ear infections, diagnostic accuracy, antibiotic duration, and watchful waiting. Randomized clinical trials, observational studies, and quality improvement reports of children aged 6 months-17 years with uncomplicated AOM published between 2000 and 2024 from the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Of 4187 studies, 425 met selection …

Racial Noticing In Mathematics Teacher Education: Unpacking Southern White Christian Teacher Candidates' Reflections On Data Investigations Of Issues Of Systemic Racism, Liza Bondurant, Anthony Fernandes, Travis Weiland
Publications
In this article, we examine how southern white Christian secondary mathematics teacher candidates reflected on racial inequities in academic opportunities and school discipline after engaging with data sets highlighting such disparities. Using a lens of racial noticing, informed by Leonardo’s (2009) conceptualization of whiteness as a racial discourse that normalizes white dominance, we analyze candidates’ written reflections to identify how they interpreted and responded to issues of race in mathematics education. Two dominant themes emerged: the normalization of implicit biases and the tensions between aspiring to objectivity and acknowledging subjectivity in educational practices. Both patterns aligned with whiteness by obscuring …

PURPOSE: Coats disease is a rare, retinal vascular disorder characterized by telangiectasias, aneurysmal dilations, and progressive exudative retinal detachment. Limited understanding of the disease warranted the need to identify controversial issues through an extensive literature search and a debate and discussion among international panels of experts.
METHODS: Extensive literature search was done on multiple aspects of the disease-classification patterns, disease, Coats-plus, and Coats-like response. Other key factors included the etiology, possible genetic patterns, relationship with other vascular disorders, the role of inflammatory factors and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the pathogenesis, diagnostic features, and complications. Considering the varying treatment …

Regorafenib Pulmonary Toxicity: A Case Of Cavitary Lung Disease And Ards Treated With Infliximab, Michael Dong, Mackenzie Kramer, Tanmay Gandhi, Gautam George
Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine Faculty Papers
Regorafenib-induced pneumonitis and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are rare and poorly characterized toxicities. We describe a 43-year-old male with metastatic colorectal cancer who developed hypoxic respiratory failure after two cycles of regorafenib. Imaging revealed cavitary lung lesions and diffuse ground glass opacities. Despite antibiotics and high-dose corticosteroids, his condition deteriorated, requiring ICU admission and mechanical ventilation. Bronchoalveolar lavage revealed bacterial pathogens, and he was treated for pneumonia. After multidisciplinary discussion, he was assessed to have regorafenib-induced pneumonitis as a major driver of his respiratory failure, and after limited steroid response, infliximab was administered with marked respiratory improvement. However, he …
Secondary World Language Teachers’ Perspectives On Gamification-Based Assessments, Taryn Thompson
Secondary World Language Teachers’ Perspectives On Gamification-Based Assessments, Taryn Thompson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem that was addressed through this study was that there was a gap in the literature about secondary world language teachers using gamification-based assessments and the influence on student learning. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore teachers’ perspectives on the benefits and challenges of gamification-based assessments. The study was grounded in the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology, digital game-based language learning, and Krashen’s second language acquisition theory. To secure a sample of 12 participants for this study, purposeful and snowball sampling were employed, wherein potential secondary world language teachers were solicited through …

Rates of lactate production and consumption reflect the metabolic state of many cell types, including neurons. Here, we investigated the effects of nutrient deprivation on lactate dynamics in Drosophila neurons by leveraging the limiting effects of the unstirred layer, a diffusion barrier that forms around cells in culture. We found that neurons constitutively consume lactate when the availability of trehalose, a glucose disaccharide preferred by insects, is limited by the unstirred layer. Acute mechanical disruption of the unstirred layer reduced this reliance on lactate. Through kinetic modeling and experimental validation, we demonstrate that neuronal lactate consumption rates under unstirred layer …

Trauma remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in part due to complex pathophysiological responses. Yet our abilities to predict these changes are limited. Plasma miRNAs have been proposed as DAMPs that drive immune response and organ injury. Here, we test a panel of plasma miRNAs-selected based on next-generation sequencing and nucleotide motifs identified via a machine-learning algorithm-for their abilities to predict subclinical pathophysiological injuries. We find marked and severity-dependent increases in the miRNA biomarkers following trauma, which are closely associated with various injury markers. AUROC indicates that these biomarkers possess strong diagnostic and predictive abilities in overall trauma …

Lysosomes are essential organelles for cellular homeostasis and signaling, with dysfunction linked to neurological disorders, lysosomal storage diseases, and cancer. While proteomics has advanced our understanding of lysosomal composition, the structural characterization of lysosomal membrane proteins in their native environment remains a significant challenge. Here, we developed a cryo electron tomography workflow to visualize lysosomal membrane proteins within intact, native lysosomal membranes. We isolated endolysosomes by independently targeting two lysosomal membrane proteins, transient receptor potential mucolipin 1 and transmembrane protein 192, enriching organelles that exhibited the expected morphology and proteomic composition of the endolysosomal system. Sub-tomogram averaging enabled the structural …

Glycine plays a central role in human metabolism, and an adequate supply is required for synthesizing glutathione (GSH), eliminating excess metabolites as acylglycine via the glycine conjugation detoxification pathway, and maintaining 1-carbon cycle activity. However, glycine is deficient in individuals with severe obesity, which may compromise these pathways and metabolic health. This exploratory study examines whether dietary glycine supplementation could correct glycine deficiency and impairments in glycine-dependent metabolic pathways. 19 participants with severe obesity (BMI 38.3 ± 5.3 kg/m2) were treated with dietary glycine (100 mg/kg/day) for two weeks. We found that treatment significantly increased the plasma concentration of glycine …

Alzheimer's disease increases the risk of developing epilepsy together with cognitive decline. Early diagnosis or prediction of parameters associated with epileptic activity can greatly help in managing disease outcomes. Network hyperexcitability is a candidate of interest as a neurophysiological biomarker of Alzheimer's disease. High-frequency oscillations are increasingly recognized as potential biomarkers of hyperexcitability and epileptic activity. However, they have not yet been identified in Alzheimer's disease. In this study, we measured high-frequency oscillations via magnetoencephalography recordings in Alzheimer's disease patients with and without epileptic activity, as part of a Phase 2a randomized, double blind clinical trial of the efficacy of …

Dysfunction at the centrosome-cilium interface underlies a broad range of ciliopathies. Here, we identify biallelic variants in CEP76, encoding a centrosomal protein, in eight unrelated individuals presenting with neurodevelopmental, ocular, and variable additional multisystem features. Proband-derived fibroblasts and CEP76-depleted RPE1 cells display ciliary deficits, including impaired cilium formation and length, disrupted transition zone architecture, and impaired IFT88-mediated anterograde intraflagellar transport. Zebrafish cep76 mutants recapitulate key clinical phenotypes, and in vitro complementation assays confirm pathogenicity for all tested human disease-associated variants. Proteomics analysis identifies CEP76 interactors, including known partners CCP110 and CEP97, and highlights clinically and functionally relevant candidates, including …

Innovative Machine Learning Approach For Predicting The In Vitro Mao Coated Magnesium-Based Substrate, Abdelrahman Amin, Hamdy Ibrahim, Ibrahim Awad
UTC Spring Research and Arts Conference
The increasing number of orthopedic surgeries due to various reasons has driven demand for improved implant materials beyond conventional Ti–Ni alloys, which can cause stress shielding and other complications. Magnesium-based implants have gained attention due to their biocompatibility, bone-like mechanical properties, and controllable degradation rates using different approaches. Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) offers an effective means to enhance corrosion resistance by forming a protective ceramic layer, with process parameters significantly influencing degradation behavior. This study presents a machine learning approach to predict the in vitro corrosion performance of MAO-coated magnesium implants, enabling efficient optimization of process parameters and improved implant design.

Wayward Joy In Queer Femme-Inist Educational Research, Sarah Stapleton, Lindsay Cavanaugh, Jade Crimson Rose Da Costa
Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
This article draws on our experiences with “Femme Educational Futurities,” a dream-mapping (Author 2, 2023), critical arts-based, participatory-informed project about softness in K–12 schools, to explore the boundaries of queer, femme-inist research. We trace how our attempts to enact research softly (Schwartz, 2020) led us towards wayward joy (Hartman, 2019): a messy affective terrain marked by connection, vulnerability, shame, and hope. For each author, we identify what Applebaum (1995) calls a “stop” moment and explore within each instance the convergence of softness, radical love (hooks, 2000) and tender failure (Halberstam, 2011), and discuss what joy means to us as a …

“It Has Made Me Stronger”: The Strengths Of Trans And Nonbinary Teachers, Heather K. Mcentarfer, Matthew D. Rice
Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
This study draws from two data sets collected from interviews with trans and nonbinary (TGNB) teachers. It highlights the strengths related to gender identity and gender history that the teachers bring to schools and classrooms, as identified by the teachers and the researchers. Strengths identified included multiple ways of supporting LGBTQ+ students (especially TGNB students), connecting with all students, greater self-awareness, and seeing beyond “boxes.” The study adapts Pennell’s (2016a, 2016b) queer cultural capital, introducing and exploring TGNB cultural capital.
