Atomistic Insights Into Dual Mechanisms For Nacl-Driven Dissolution And Polymerization Of Tricalcium Silicate, Wei Zhang, Jia Sun, Juntao Dang, Bo Tao Huang, Biqin Dong, Hongyan Ma, Dongshuai Hou Oct 2025

Atomistic Insights Into Dual Mechanisms For Nacl-Driven Dissolution And Polymerization Of Tricalcium Silicate, Wei Zhang, Jia Sun, Juntao Dang, Bo Tao Huang, Biqin Dong, Hongyan Ma, Dongshuai Hou

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this study, experimental characterization and reactive molecular dynamics simulations were integrated to reveal the effects of NaCl on the early hydration of tricalcium silicate (C3S). The results demonstrate that NaCl significantly accelerates the early hydration of C3S by promoting Ca dissolution and silicate tetrahedra polymerization. Specifically, Cl–ions coordinate with surface Ca, weakening the Ca–O bonds in C3S and reducing the energy barrier for Ca dissolution. Meanwhile, Na+ions compete with Ca2+for the O atoms, creating localized charge imbalance and attracting protons, which destabilize Si–O bonds and facilitate the polymerization of silicate tetrahedra. These effects …

Reflecting On Teaching Together And Alone: Preservice Teachers’ Processes Of Knowledge Construction In Writing And Discussion, Ulrike Hartmann, Marcus Kindlinger, Kati Trempler, Anna-Lena Molitor, Helenrose Fives Oct 2025

Reflecting On Teaching Together And Alone: Preservice Teachers’ Processes Of Knowledge Construction In Writing And Discussion, Ulrike Hartmann, Marcus Kindlinger, Kati Trempler, Anna-Lena Molitor, Helenrose Fives

Department of Educational Foundations Scholarship and Creative Works

Understanding how preservice teachers (PSTs) engage with knowledge of educational sciences through reflective practice is critical to improving teacher education. This study investigates how PSTs construct knowledge when analyzing a complex classroom situation and explores how a reflective task format—individual essay writing or collaborative group discussion—shapes the types and quality of knowledge construction processes involved. Drawing on frameworks of reflective practice and epistemic cognition, we developed a coding scheme to identify five knowledge construction processes and three levels of implementation quality. Using data from a university-based teacher education course, we applied this scheme to PSTs’ written essays and transcribed group …

Lidt For Femtosecond Laser Optical Components, Viviana K. Vladutescu, Mikhail Polyanskiy, Dismas Choge, Tahsinur Rahman, Tianyi Zhao, Marcus Babzien, William Li, Antonio Verderesa, Igor Pogorelski

Publications and Research

Optical technology is pushed to the upper limits of damage with the advent of ultrafast high-power (UFHP) lasers. UFHP are at the forefront of particle accelerators, being used in interaction with electron beams to produce high-gradient electron acceleration, generation of compact radiation sources like inverse Compton scattering and free electron lasers. The UFHP laser levels, repetition rates, and operating environmental conditions lower the damage threshold of the optical components of femtosecond lasers uttering them useless if not used in the given parameters. In this regard, the present study provides the threshold levels for various optical components used in 800nm femtosecond …

The Unavoidable Consequences Of Homelessness, Sara K. Rankin, Laura Riley Oct 2025

The Unavoidable Consequences Of Homelessness, Sara K. Rankin, Laura Riley

Utah Law Review

The U.S. Supreme Court’s recent Grants Pass v. Johnson decision sounded the death knell for Eighth Amendment protections for people experiencing homelessness. The decision not only overruled key Ninth Circuit decisions, but also severely cabined the Court’s own precedent, allowing cities across the country to jail and fine people for doing nothing other than surviving in public space when they have no reasonable alternative. The Eighth Amendment’s prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment is a powerful symbol of America’s aspiration to realize the dignity and humanity of all its people, especially those who are marginalized and vulnerable to systemic discrimination …

Denial And Attribution Strategies In Saudi Judicial Rulings On Cybercrimes: A Forensic Linguistic Analysis, Bandar Subail Al-Shammari Dr.

Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities

This research examines the linguistic strategies employed by defendants in cybercrime cases within the Saudi judicial system to deny responsibility or shift it elsewhere, based on a sample of documented court rulings issued between 1433 and 1435 AH. The rulings reveal recurring patterns of denial, such as claims of shared use of Internet Protocol (IP) addresses or devices, or reliance on moral, religious, and cultural justifications. The study employs a composite theoretical framework that integrates Speech Act Theory, evidentiality, epistemic modality, and critical discourse analysis. The findings indicate that judges give greater weight to direct technical evidence when it conflicts …

Rejecting The Unitary Executive, Christine Kexel Chabot Oct 2025

Rejecting The Unitary Executive, Christine Kexel Chabot

Utah Law Review

Critics have dismissed originalism as an empty methodology. They claim it is incapable of resolving our most important constitutional disputes, including the debate over the unitary executive. While unitary scholars assert that Article II grants the President an indefeasible power to remove all subordinates at will, their purportedly originalist interpretation conflicts with significant historical evidence. The Supreme Court’s apparent move toward an indefeasible removal power has proceeded as though this underlying historical indeterminacy is either irrelevant or does not exist. This Article offers a new way to bridge the disconnect between historical disputes over the unitary executive and public meaning …

Ultra Vires Review Of Federal Agency Action Made Simple(R), Richard W. Murphy Oct 2025

Ultra Vires Review Of Federal Agency Action Made Simple(R), Richard W. Murphy

Utah Law Review

The law governing ultra vires review seeking injunctive relief to challenge statutory violations by federal agencies is a mess. Although administrative law generally limits judicial review to final actions, a substantial body of caselaw holds that this type of ultra vires review can reach interlocutory actions, vastly expanding judicial reach. Although administrative law now insists that federal courts must exercise independent judgment when reviewing agency statutory interpretations, caselaw limits this type of ultra vires review to correcting only the most spectacular statutory violations. In addition, caselaw ignores or garbles the problem of determining which types of plaintiffs qualify to invoke …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

In recent years, new treatment methods have been developed in addition to traditional treatments to eliminate cancer, one of the deadliest diseases. Given the shortcomings of conventional therapies, including the emergence of drug resistance and selectivity to the target cell, a considerable number of researchers have directed their attention toward the investigation of alternative, less invasive strategies for the treatment of cancer. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has received great attention in the scientific community as it is seen as a promising method of cancer treatment. Various approaches have been adopted to identify new and more effective photosensitizers (PSs) that reduce adverse …

The Theoretical Investigation Of The Stability And The Racemization Of Pristine, Functionalized, And Doped Expanded Helicenes, Bedi̇rhan Öztürk, Berkay Sütay

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The Hückel aromatic and Möbius aromatic compounds, consisting of topologically different arrangements of adjacent benzene rings in the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) family, have long attracted interest in both synthesis and theoretical chemistry. Among these, [n]-azene and [n]-circulene derivatives are more thoroughly explored due to their simple architectures and more accessible synthesis pathways. However, there are active ongoing studies on the synthesis of both [n]-helicene and expanded [n]-helicene structures, as well as Möbius circulenes, which are Möbius isomers of [n]-circulenes. In this regard, there is limited information available on both the experimental and theoretical characterization of the synthesized molecules. In …

The Symbiotic Harm Of A Criminal Record, Ericka B. Adams, Elsa Y. Chen, Sarah E. Lageson Oct 2025

The Symbiotic Harm Of A Criminal Record, Ericka B. Adams, Elsa Y. Chen, Sarah E. Lageson

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Having a criminal record significantly alters a person’s life chances, decreasing their opportunities for employment, housing, student loans, voting, public benefits, and more. The collateral consequences of criminal convictions, or the civil restrictions that follow criminal convictions, are well documented. However, because individuals are connected to families and communities, it is impossible to isolate the effects of punishment to only the persons holding criminal records. Instead, the effects of criminal records might be best understood as a set of symbiotic harms, marked by relational and interdependent effects. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with 59 expungement-eligible persons and 69 community representatives, this …

Clinical Course And Treatment Outcomes In Solid-Basaloid Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Of The Breast: A Systematic Review And Case Report, Stephanie Kim, Kyle Sheth, Xiaoying Yu, Laura Porterfield, Elizabeth M Vaughan

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background: Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (ACC) is a rare, indolent subtype of triple-negative breast cancer, accounting for < 0.1 % of cases. The solid-basaloid subtype (SBACC), comprising approximately one-quarter of breast ACCs, has a poorer prognosis. While ACC is typically managed with surgery and is chemo-resistant, SBACC is more aggressive and often treated with chemotherapy and, more recently, immunotherapy-though supporting evidence remains limited.

Aim: To assess clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of SBACC of the breast.

Methods: This study presents a case of breast SBACC and a systematic review of five databases (inception-September 10, 2024). Eligible studies reported clinical course, treatment, and outcomes. Exclusions included duplicates, non-SBACC focus, animal studies, and those lacking clinical or with only pathological data. Descriptive statistics were used for binary and categorical variables. Risk of bias was assessed using JBI tools, following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The review is registered in PROSPERO.

Background: Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) are a group of disorders often resulting in progressive vision loss, ultimately leading to blindness. A significant portion of their genetic causes remain unresolved, partly due to undiscovered disease-associated genes or variants. This study aimed to identify novel genetic links to IRDs.

Methods: All patients underwent comprehensive ophthalmological evaluation, including retinal imaging (fundus autofluorescence and macular optical coherence tomography) and electroretinogram testing. Whole exome sequencing and whole genome sequencing were performed on patients with clinically unsolved IRD, and data were analysed using an in-house pipeline to identify causal variants. Subsequently, Sanger sequencing was performed to …
