Does Cognitive Frame Affect Clinical Reasoning Among Medical Students? A Cross-Sectional Study, Xiao C. Zhang, Sara A. Belko, Andrew J Monick
Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers
Background Diagnostic errors affect patient safety and lead to high costs. Cognitive bias is a key source of diagnostic error, and the framing effect poses a particular clinical challenge. The extent to which individual factors affect susceptibility to the framing bias is unclear, and the role of expertise in particular is contested across the literature. Objectives This study investigated the effects of framing bias on diagnostic reasoning among medical students. We hypothesised that the effects attributable to framing would be mediated by the number of years of medical education completed. Methods Participants were randomly assigned on an automated basis with …

Short Term Hemodynamic Effects Of Atrial Fibrillation In A Closed-Loop Human Cardiac-Baroreflex System, Oluwasanmi Adeodu, Michelle Gee, Babak Mahmoudi, Rajanikanth Vadigepalli, Mayuresh V. Kothare
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Atrial fibrillation (AF) remains the leading cardiac cause of stroke and AF-related death rate in the United States has been increasing for over twenty years. While the effect of standalone AF on heart rate is well established, there is a lack of clarity on its impact on other critical hemodynamic metrics. This is ostensibly due to interaction with other common comorbidities, especially hypertension. In addition, AF has a complex relationship with the state of the baroreflex. Evidence indicates that baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), the ability of the intrinsic cardiac control system to initiate parasympathetic response, is suppressed during AF. Therefore, a …
Bankruptcy Judging After Williamson, Vincent S.J. Buccola
Bankruptcy Judging After Williamson, Vincent S.J. Buccola
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
This Essay asks how bankruptcy judges ought to orient their substantial, statutory discretion in business reorganization cases. The motivating observation is that bankruptcy law enacts a kind of forced integration of productive assets. To shed light on the contemporary problems that bankruptcy judges face, I thus look to two classic approaches to the economic theory of the firm—from Oliver Williamson and from Oliver Hart. I conclude that nonjudicial institutions have largely surmounted the problems to which their theories point, leaving a different, and probably narrower, set of issues to worry about. Bankruptcy judges who have a notion that their job …

Cover cropping is an important management practice that can benefit the cash crop and the environment. Plant species, weather, and cover crop termination influence biomass production and N fixation potential. This study was conducted to determine optimal termination dates for production systems in Arkansas based on growing degree days (GDD) for eight different cover crop species: Austrian winter pea (AWP) (Pisum sativum), balansa clover (Trifolium michelianum), barley (Hordeum vulgare), black-seeded oats (Avena sativa), common vetch (Vicia sativa var. Cahaba), cereal rye (Secale cereale), crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum), and hairy vetch (Vicia villosa). Field studies were conducted at three research stations …

Background: Hypercalcemia is a common and serious complication of malignancy, often contributing to morbidity and mortality. In patients with paraproteinemia, elevated total calcium with normal ionized calcium, termed pseudohypercalcemia, can complicate diagnosis and lead to inappropriate treatment. While this phenomenon has been described in case reports, its prevalence and clinical impact in routine practice remain poorly defined.
Methods: We report a case of pseudohypercalcemia in a patient with IgG κ multiple myeloma and conducted a retrospective review of de-identified data to assess the prevalence and biochemical associations of pseudohypercalcemia in paraproteinemia. Available data included serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP), …

Background: The rising prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), particularly among pediatric populations, requires identification of modifiable risk factors to control disease progression. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have emerged as potential contributors to liver damage; however, their role in MASLD remains underexplored. This study aimed to develop a translational framework integrating human and in vitro data to elucidate the effect of PFAS on MASLD development.
Methods: We measured PFAS plasma levels in the Teen-LABS cohort (n = 136), comprising adolescents with obesity (mean age = 16.8 years) undergoing bariatric surgery. Plasma samples were also analyzed using proteomic …
Microglia Sensing Of Peripheral Signals That Bridge The Brain And Body, Claire E Young, Melanie A Samuel
Microglia Sensing Of Peripheral Signals That Bridge The Brain And Body, Claire E Young, Melanie A Samuel
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Microglia are the resident immune cell of the brain, and alterations in microglia signaling have been implicated in many neurodegenerative disorders. While microglia responses to central cues and other brain cell types are well documented, studies are increasingly investigating the impact of peripherally derived signals on microglia function. A diverse array of peripheral cues, including dietary components, hormones, and bacteria metabolites and components from the microbiome cross the blood brain barrier and directly influence microglia state through ligand-receptor interactions. This review highlights the complexity of brain-body interactions from the perspective of microglia function and proposes the idea that microglia could …

Fas-activated serine/threonine kinase (FASTK) proteins comprise one of the largest families of mitochondrial post-transcriptional regulators. Members are classified based on their conserved C-terminus, which shows homology with the PD-(D/E)XK superfamily of endoribonucleases. However, it is still uncertain which of these FASTK members are catalytic. The six human FASTK homologs rely on their RNA-binding activity to regulate distinct stages of mitochondrial gene expression, including early processing of nascent RNA, 3'-end messenger RNA (mRNA) maturation, ribosomal RNA (rRNA) modification, mRNA stability, and translation. Genetic and genomic studies have highlighted the crucial role of FASTK proteins in balancing the mitochondrial transcriptome and controlling …

Background: Treating advanced ovarian cancer (OC) is challenging due to the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. This study investigates tumor-immune cell interactions using organotypic spheroid models that simulate the in vivo microenvironment.
Methods: A dual-model spheroid system was established combining serous adenocarcinoma SKOV-3 cells with monocytes, pro-inflammatory (MΦ1) or anti-inflammatory (MΦ2) macrophages, or their derived exosomes (EXOs). In Model A, immune cells or EXOs were co-seeded with tumor cells to replicate early heterotypic aggregation. In Model B, immune cells or EXOs were introduced 24 h post-spheroid formation to simulate immune infiltration into established spheroids. Spheroid morphology was quantified by diameter and circularity, …

Nasal colonization by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pneumoniae is associated with an increased risk of infection by these pathobionts, whereas nasal colonization by Dolosigranulum species is associated with health. Human nasal epithelial organoids (HNOs) differentiated at air-liquid interface (ALI) physiologically recapitulate human nasal respiratory epithelium with a robust mucociliary blanket. Due to their natural stem-like properties, HNO lines are a long-term experimental resource that offers genetic diversity based on the different donors. To develop HNOs as a new model system for bacterial nasal colonization, we reproducibly monocolonized HNOs differentiated at ALI with S. aureus, S. pneumoniae, or Dolosigranulum …

Drivers Of Policy Support And Political Consumerism Behavior Among Water Recreationists, Mina Kim
Drivers Of Policy Support And Political Consumerism Behavior Among Water Recreationists, Mina Kim
Proceedings of the Recreation Experience Community Network Research Symposium
Individuals who engage in water-based recreation share a distinct bond with water quality due to their direct contact with aquatic environments during leisure activities. Increasing concerns about water quality have led to a rise in research exploring how environmental conditions and perceived risks shape environmental attitudes and conservation actions. However, it remains uncertain whether water recreationists extend their conservation efforts beyond those directly tied to their activities. To explore this issue, the present study investigates whether water-based recreationists in South Carolina support more stringent water management policies and engage in political consumerism behaviors, such as boycotting and buycotting. Data were …

Indonesia's Agriculture Tax: An Approach To The Gtap Model, Diah Setyawati Dewanti, Fitra Prasapawidya Purna
Jurnal Ekonomi dan Studi Pembangunan
Tax is a policy tool to control the market. As Indonesia implied an agriculture tax of about 10% in 2014, it is worthy of capturing how it affects the market. This paper aims to find the effect of the implied tax on the market by seeing the country's sales, demand, imports, exports, and welfare. The method used is GTAP model simulation with the base of GTAP9 and aggregated based on the case applied. The result shows that the tax implied makes the demand, import, and export decrease even for the country that implements it. However, the sale and welfare gained …

Comparative Development Of Indonesia And Nigeria In The First Two Decades Of Democracy: Divergence Or Convergence?, Adamu Waziri Babagana
Jurnal Ekonomi dan Studi Pembangunan
Indonesia and Nigeria are considered suitable candidates for comparative analysis because of their similarities in natural endowments and geographical attributes, demography, economic structure, sociocultural diversity, and political history. Indonesia began to achieve rapid growth in the 1980s while Nigeria did not. During that period, economic policies in the two countries diverged, and this led to sustained economic growth in Indonesia and prolonged economic decline in Nigeria. However, as the countries transitioned to democratic rule in 1999 following the collapse of authoritarian regimes, some aspects of their political and economic trajectories revealed a trend towards convergence. Using the descriptive comparison of …

Journal of Intelligent Informatics, Networking, and Cybersecurity
This research introduces a customized attention visualization framework for mitigating hallucinations in Arabic Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems tailored for financial document analysis. The proposed architecture extends MarBERT with a dual-stage attention supervision mechanism and a hallucination-aware loss formulation, trained on a newly constructed dataset of 7,000 annotated Arabic financial query-context pairs. A grounding alignment score is computed over attended tokens, and generated responses are rejected when falling below a dynamically adjusted precision-aware threshold, serving as the core decision-making approach for hallucination detection. The system achieves 95.04% classification accuracy, 95.84% precision, 94.12% recall, and an F1 score of 94.97%, outperforming AraELECTRA and …

Journal of Prison Education Research
Teaching in the prison context is characterized by a high complexity level; it is a multifaced activity influenced by several factors depending on the specific context. We present a preliminary but overall picture of schooling in Italian prisons by considering teachers’ reflections regarding their experiences in teaching mathematics in correctional facilities. To address the gap in the current literature on this issue, we conducted a SWOT analysis on the reflection provided by a group of nine Italian mathematics teachers who teach in different prisons and with different experiences and backgrounds. Their reflection allowed us to identify and describe six theory-driven …
