Sanskrit Educational Texts In Kawi Culture; The Case Of The "Kārakasaṁgraha", Zakariya Pamuji Aminullah, Yosephin Apriastuti Rahayu

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article provides a revised critical edition and annotated translation of the Kārakasaṁgraha, a Sanskrit grammatical treatise as it has been preserved in Balinese manuscripts. The work is a synthesis of Indian grammatical traditions, notably including aspects of both Pāṇinian and Kātantra systems, which was probably recomposed in the premodern Indonesian archipelago. While its Sanskrit matrix is witness to local adaptation, the interspersed Old Javanese commentaries also show a striking reframing of grammatical discourse in ritual and cosmological idioms. Rather than merely clarifying rules of language, the glosses link grammatical analysis to devotional practice and calendrical systems, presaging a …

Vernacularization And Bilingualism Among The Sundanese; A Case Study Of Kawi Culture, Aditia Gunawan

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article examines the linguistic landscape of pre-modern Sunda, drawing on documents from the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries. The study highlights the significant role of Old Javanese as a cosmopolitan-vernacular language among Sundanese intellectuals, shaping bilingual practices in the region. Employing the framework of language order, which posits that languages are hierarchically structured within a culture, this research seeks to address the question: what roles did Old Sundanese and Old Javanese play within the language order of Sundanese society? To answer this, the study first traces the circulation of Old Javanese texts in the Sundanese region, analysing their impact on …

The Middle Javanese Passive Prefix "Ing-", Agung Kriswanto, Dwi Puspitorini, Titik Pudjiastuti Oct 2025

The Middle Javanese Passive Prefix "Ing-", Agung Kriswanto, Dwi Puspitorini, Titik Pudjiastuti

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Evidence from literary texts originating from the Mount Merapi-Merbabu milieu in Central Java demonstrates the existence of a variant of the passive marker -in- affix, which has been in use since the early period of Old Javanese: the passive prefix ing-. The six literary texts that serve as the sources for this study indicate that the ing- prefix began to emerge during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, coinciding with the development of Middle Javanese. Previous researchers have not paid much attention to the ing- prefix, as it was considered merely incidental, especially since ing- was also found in texts …

Archery And Target-Shooting In Pre-Islamic Java; What Can Be Known?, Jiří Jákl Oct 2025

Archery And Target-Shooting In Pre-Islamic Java; What Can Be Known?, Jiří Jákl

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In Java today, archery survives as a traditional discipline called jemparingan. Javanese archery involves targeting a pendulum-like target from a shooting distance of 35 to 50 metres. The archers take aim from a cross-legged seated posture (bersila) and typically wear traditional Javanese attire during competitions. Though archery has been practiced in Java for long time, there has been surprisingly little effort to study its rich history. This study aims to historicize the jemparingan by looking at the Old Javanese archery terminology and the origin of competitive (“contest”) archery in Indonesia. The evidence from pre-Islamic Java, textual, visual, …

Faculty Publications

Pyrolysis of 24 samples of foliage from three U.S. regions with frequent wildland fires (Southeastern U.S., northern Utah and Southern California) was studied in a fuel-rich flat-flame burner system at 765 ◦C (for Southeastern U.S. samples) and 725 ◦C (for northern Utah and Southern California species), with a heating rate of approximately 180 ◦C/s. These conditions were selected to mimic the conditions of wildland fires. Individual plant samples were introduced to the high temperature zone in a flat-flame burner and pyrolysis products were collected. Tar was extracted and later analyzed by GC/MS. Light gases were collected and analyzed by GC/TCD. …

Plain Language Summary Of Publication: Expert Consensus On The Early Use Of Long-Acting Injectable Antipsychotics In People With Bipolar I Disorder, Martha Sajatovic

Faculty Scholarship

Plain Language Summary: What is this summary about? This summary highlights key insights from expert psychiatrists on the early use of long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics for treating people with bipolar I disorder. What were the results? LAI antipsychotics are usually reserved as a ‘last resort’ treatment in people with bipolar I disorder, even though evidence supports their early use. Barriers to earlier use of LAIs include access issues and views that healthcare providers and people with bipolar I disorder have about this type of medication. If the treatment plan of people with bipolar I disorder includes antipsychotics, experts recommend using …

The Effectiveness Of Screencast Corrective Feedback On L2 English Academic Writing, Ming Cheng Oct 2025

The Effectiveness Of Screencast Corrective Feedback On L2 English Academic Writing, Ming Cheng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

While research indicates that written corrective feedback (WCF) can promote learning of language and writing skills (Ferris, 2004; Bitchener, 2008), both students and teachers report persistent limitations. Students often find written comments difficult to interpret, while teachers consider them time-consuming to provide. Screencast corrective feedback (SCF) offers an alternative by utilizing screen recording technology to deliver audiovisual cues and personalized explanations that can reduce ambiguity and foster rapport (Harper et al., 2012). However, existing studies on SCF have largely emphasized learner perceptions rather than its measurable impact on language development (Cheng & Li, 2020). This dissertation investigates the comparative effectiveness …

Embryonic Transcription Factors (TFs) are often reactivated in cancer, driving developmental gene programs that support phenotypic plasticity. Metabolic adaptation fuels this plasticity by supplying energy and molecular building blocks for growth. RUNX2, the master regulator of bone morphogenesis, is ectopically expressed in epithelial cancer, promoting metastasis through trans-differentiation processes like Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) and osteomimicry. By combining omics data with functional validation, we demonstrated that RUNX2 drives cancer cell metabolic rewiring by repressing mitochondrial respiration while promoting anabolic processes. We showed that RUNX2 upregulates key genes of lipid biosynthesis by regulating and cooperating with SREBP1. In vivo expression analysis in …

Variants in SLC6A1 result in a rare neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a variable clinical presentation of symptoms including developmental delay, epilepsy, motor dysfunction, and autism spectrum disorder. SLC6A1 haploinsufficiency has been confirmed as the predominant pathway of SLC6A1-related neurodevelopmental disorder (SLC6A1-NDD); however, the molecular mechanism underlying the variable clinical presentation remains unclear. Here, through work of the Undiagnosed Diseases Network, we identify an individual with an inherited p.A334S variant of uncertain significance. To resolve this variant and better understand the variable expressivity associated with SLC6A1, we assess the phenotypes of the proband in comparison with a cohort of 13 individuals …

Transdisciplinarity Through A Functional Approach In The Content Areas: Commonalities For School Teachers, Karen L. Terrell, Luciana C. De Oliveira, Jia Gui

Journal of English Learner Education

In 2020, the WIDA Consortium released a revised English language development standards framework that integrates a functional approach to language development, grounded in systemic functional linguistics, across core subjects: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Central to this framework are four Key Language Uses—Narrate, Inform, Explain, and Argue. While this holistic approach is promising, it poses challenges for elementary and middle-grade teachers and ESOL specialists, who often teach multiple subjects. To ensure all teachers can implement this approach effectively, the integration of functional language must be simplified for generalist instructors. This article explores how identifying linguistic commonalities across …

Exploring Language Through Systemic Functional Linguistics: Importance Of Communicating And Developing Academic Language For Multilingual Learners, Yana Shifrina-Piljovin

Journal of English Learner Education

Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) is a comprehensive theory of language that offers a unique perspective on how we use language to communicate and create meaning. SFL provides educators with a powerful theoretical framework for understanding how language functions in various contexts and how this knowledge can be applied to enhance classroom instruction. Developed by linguist Michael Halliday in the 1960s, SFL has become an influential framework for understanding linguistic metafunctions, from everyday conversations to academic discourse. The "systemic" aspect of SFL refers to the idea that language is a network of systems, each offering a set of choices for expressing …
