Many K-12 schools function on limited budgets in their science departments, making it difficult to acquire, maintain, and update microscopes. While modern light microscopes are often complex, expensive, and require specialized training, they are based on simple principles of light. Microscopes enable us to observe objects too small for the naked eye and reveal intricate details. Introducing affordable, easy-to-use microscope adaptations early in education helps foster a deeper understanding of science and encourages young students to pursue STEM fields. Using 3D printing, we developed two innovative microscope models and two lesson plans. Lesson 1: Using a smartphone microscope to visualize …
Relationship Of Professional Military Education And Generative Artificial Intelligence With Mission Analysis, Pinky A. De Garcia
Relationship Of Professional Military Education And Generative Artificial Intelligence With Mission Analysis, Pinky A. De Garcia
Ateneo School of Government Publications
Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) prompted the modernization of military instruction by improving situational analysis, expediting decisions, and understanding operational processes. Past studies highlighted the positive contribution of GenAI on military education and the challenges in the employment of the technology. However, these studies fail to identify its effect on military competencies included in the professional military education (PME). Considering the research gap, this study aims to analyze the relationship of GenAI usage and PME with mission analysis. The respondents were purposively selected to answer the validated survey. This study conducted preliminary analyses using descriptive statistics. The mission analysis (M=3.97, SD=0.436) …

Understanding Behavioral Engagement In Project-Based Learning: Key Influencing Factors, Maria Coney G. Pallones
English Faculty Publications
Project-Based Learning (PBL) is widely acknowledged for fostering student engagement; however, limited research explores how its specific design features influence behavioral engagement, defined as students’ active participation, persistence, and effort, particularly in early education settings. This study investigates what key factors, as perceived by teachers, influence students' behavioral engagement during PBL, and how these factors support motivation through the lens of Self-Determination Theory (SDT). Semi-structured interviews were purposively conducted with elementary teachers experienced in implementing PBL, and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Three key design features emerged as critical to sustaining behavioral engagement: voice, choice, and ownership, which …

The Victims’ Rights Mismatch, Lee Kovarsky
The Victims’ Rights Mismatch, Lee Kovarsky
Michigan Law Review
A puzzling mismatch lurks inside victims’ rights law. Victims’ rights are most easily justified when held by living victims, but the cultural movement has triumphed largely as a response to crime-caused death. This Article identifies the mismatch between victims’ rights and their justifications in dead-victim cases, analyzes the normative questions involved, and recommends an institutional response. The mismatch persists because American jurisdictions assign a single bundle of rights to all people denominated as “victims.” In dead-victim cases, however, the primary bearers of interpersonal harm are gone. Instead, their rights are assumed by aggrieved family members and legal estates. In those …

Farming The 2030s: A Policy Playbook For Climate‑Resilient, Tech‑Enabled Agriculture In Arid And Semi‑Arid Regions, David M. Kargbo, Rawya Mezaal Mhmood, Neam Nabeel Alqaseer
New England Journal of Public Policy
The 2030s will be decisive for adapting agriculture to hotter, drier, and more volatile climates, especially across arid and semi-arid regions from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) to parts of the United States. We advance a pragmatic blueprint: pair water-smart infrastructure and nature-based systems with digital, genetic, and robotic innovations, and align them through policy that de-risks investment while protecting people and ecosystems. We position Australia as a global test bed, where enforceable basin rules, digital agronomy, targeted inputs/robotics, safe wastewater reuse, managed aquifer recharge (MAR), and emerging agrivoltaics (AV) have been validated as bundles rather than isolated …

Understanding the role of humans as 'ecosystem engineers' requires a deep-time perspective rooted in evolutionary history and the fossil record. However, no conceptual framework exists for studying the rise of ecosystem engineering in deep time, requiring us to consider effects that fall outside the scope of traditional definitions. Here, we present a new framework applicable to both modern and ancient engineering-type effects. We propose a new term - 'Earth system engineering' - to describe biological processes that alter the structure and function of planetary spheres, and which combines core tenets of ecosystem engineering, niche construction, and legacy effects. We illustrate …

Donald Trump’s threats to carry out the mass deportation of unauthorized immigrants helped propel him to a second term as President of the United States. For the estimated 11 million people in the U.S. without lawful status, those threats have increased fears of forced returns to their countries of origin. While American immigration law is heavily focused on the legal processes leading to deportation, little attention has been paid to the post-deportation experiences of individuals who must reintegrate into their home countries. This gap in understanding is especially alarming given the high stakes of reintegration. A successful transition can empower …

The effects of the first printed layer (SPG or SPIG), printing speed (10, 20 mm/s), and nozzle size (0.52, 0.64, 0.72 mm) on printability were evaluated. The textural properties, rheological characteristics, microstructure, crystallinities, and functional groups of the proteins were analyzed. Printing sorghum and soy proteins together helped balance essential amino acids, where lysine (94.7 %) and histidine …
