I am currently revising the final unit of my English 110 class so students can delve deeper into language, literacy, literacy sponsorship, place and learning. This final unit project asks students to interview someone from Queens and ask them to share their educational history, as well as their migration story, as it relates to language and identity. The goal is to have students use the tools they’ve acquired throughout the semester and use their critical thinking skills to understand how literacy sponsorship varies from one person to another, and how migration, cultural upbringing, language and identity shape how we interact …

I am developing a module for ENGL 371: Twentieth- and Twenty-first Century Drama and Performance. In this course for majors, I have the latitude to choose different topics in my syllabus design. One of the versions I previously developed was organized around “Visions of Home.” In that first attempt I did not successfully connect the material to Queens at any point; in part because none of the plays I selected were based in Queens, I had not figured out how to implement a place-based mode of inquiry of the kind that this workshop explored. The class is organized chronologically (1950s-2000s) …

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Presentation at the Graduate Student Forum of the TESOL Virtual Conference
With the growing number of international students attending American universities in recent years, academic librarians recognize the importance of serving the needs of that population. However, many librarians acknowledge that they feel unprepared to support international students, due to a lack of training or experience working with multilingual or second-language learners. This presentation offers a review of the literature exploring collaborations between librarians and instructors to better support ELLs in a college and university setting and presents recommendations for both librarians and faculty. While this session focuses on academic …

Cytotoxicity And Genotoxicity Of Glyphosate And Roundup Quickpro On Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells, Tasnimul Ferdous, Qingfang He, Wen Zhang
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Glyphosate and Roundup products have become the most used herbicide worldwide. However, previous bans in Europe and recent reversal have caused confusion over their safety. This study aims to investigate the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of Roundup QuickPro and its main ingredient glyphosate using Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. Cytotoxicity was calculated by measuring CHO cell viability with 72 h of exposure to each toxicant. Roundup QuickPro exhibited higher cytotoxicity with LC50 of 511.2 mu g/mL than glyphosate's LC50 of 3389 mu g/mL. The recommended application concentration (11,233.7 mu g/mL) of Roundup QuickPro is much higher than the measured LC50, …

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Objectives: Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide and is the most diagnosed malignancy among men in Oman. Although it has historically affected older populations, a troubling rise in CRC incidence among younger demographics has emerged in recent years. This study assessed perceived CRC risk, beliefs, and awareness among Omani adults and identified sociodemographic predictors to inform culturally tailored prevention strategies. Methods: A national cross-sectional survey of 1,060 adults aged ≥18 years was conducted across Oman between March and August 2023 using a validated questionnaire adapted from the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS). …
Enhancing Antitrafficking Initiatives Through An Interagency Collaboration Framework, Robert Louis Baxter
Enhancing Antitrafficking Initiatives Through An Interagency Collaboration Framework, Robert Louis Baxter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The challenges individual agencies face in addressing the complex issue of human trafficking and how interagency collaboration can strengthen survivor-centered support are largely unknown. Organizations often lack formal alliances that combine expertise and resources to deliver more comprehensive care. The absence of such partnerships represents a missed opportunity to provide the essential services necessary for survivors’ recovery, empowerment, and social reintegration. The purpose of the study was to use interagency collaboration to address the question: How can education, law enforcement, public health, and community-based organizations assess the barriers and benefits of interagency collaboration to create a more seamless support network …

Objective: Breastfeeding (BF) is essential for maternal and child health, yet disparities persist in initiation, exclusivity, and duration. Despite cultural and policy support in Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, challenges such as inconsistent hospital practices, early formula supplementation, and limited workplace accommodations hinder optimal BF outcomes. Understanding the effectiveness of BF interventions in these regions is key to improving maternal and infant health. This review is aimed to identify and synthesize BF interventions and their outcomes in Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Materials and Methods: A scoping review was conducted following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting …

Stigma And Barriers To Seeking Mental Health Care Among Emergency Department Providers – A Mixed Methods Study, Shannon C. White, Charlotte H. Harris, Ravindra Gopaul, Joshua M. Smyth
Student Papers, Posters & Projects
High levels of psychological distress and depression are common among clinicians working in US emergency departments [ED], yet treatment-seeking remains rare, contributing to burnout and negative well-being. Reluctance to seek care often reflects concerns about negative consequences (e.g., stigma, negative professional impact). We sought to characterize the availability of mental health resource availability, beliefs about seeking care, and barriers faced by emergency department healthcare providers. A sequential mixed-method design was employed. Phase 1 included a survey of ED physicians, advanced practice providers (APPs; i.e., nurse practitioners and physician assistants) and medical residents at an academic medical center. The survey assessed …

Introduction: Parents play a vital role in supporting self-regulation and managing behaviors in children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). However, many face barriers to accessing consistent, evidence-based support. Mobile health (mHealth) technologies offer a promising way to deliver flexible, low-burden guidance for parents on best practices and strategies to support their children's self-regulation. However, designing them is non-trivial.
Objective: This paper introduces ParentCoach, a mobile application designed to support parents of children with ADHD through brief daily lessons, reflection prompts, and skill-building activities.
Methods: ParentCoach was developed in two phases: (1) secondary analysis of qualitative data from over 30 families …

Staff Education On The Timeliness Of Administration Of Insulin For The Hospitalized Diabetic Patient, Precious C. Abidoye
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem addressed in this DNP project was the necessity for a nursing staff education program (SEP) focused on the prompt administration of insulin and order management as well as the evaluation of the hospital policy regarding diabetes mellitus in nonpregnant adult patients concerning hypoglycemia/hyperglycemia. Timely administration of insulin in the hospital is essential to maintain blood glucose levels within a permissible range, which greatly reduces the chances of encountering complications related to diabetes. The project questions were: Will there be an alteration in the nursing team members’ understanding of the promptness of insulin administration and the associated policy from …

Experiences Of Baccalaureate Prepared Nurses On Their Transition To Novice Faculty Members, Theresa Jade Lombardo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The shortage of qualified nursing faculty in Canada threatens the ability to educate sufficient numbers of nurses to meet healthcare demands. Despite this, limited research explores how baccalaureate-prepared nurses experience the transition into nursing faculty roles. The purpose of this qualitative study, guided by Schoening’s nurse educator transition model, was to explore the experiences of baccalaureate prepared nurses on the transition to novice nurse faculty members teaching in 2-year diploma prepared nursing programs in Northwestern Ontario. Five semi-structured interviews were conducted with baccalaureate-prepared novice nursing faculty members, analyzed, and transcribed using Zoom. Data were coded and analyzed using Saldana’s first …

School of Podiatric Medicine Publications
Providencia rettgeri is a Gram-negative bacterium, rarely reported as a cause of diabetic wound infections. Its frequent resistance to β-lactams and carbapenems limits treatment options, especially in immunocompromised patients. We present the case of a 59-year-old unhoused male living with diabetes, peripheral artery disease, and prior bilateral transmetatarsal amputations who presented with a University of Texas 3B diabetic foot ulcer. Magnetic resonance imaging showed osteomyelitis of metatarsals 2–4, and bone biopsy grew Providencia rettgeri and Proteus mirabilis. The patient declined further surgery and was treated with 6 weeks of cefepime and metronidazole, with outpatient wound care, achieving wound closure …

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide, impacting both males and females. In men, HPV causes genital warts, more than 90% of anal cancers, and 60% of oropharyngeal cancers. Given that one in three men are infected with HPV worldwide, there is a pressing need for enhanced public health strategies focusing on prevention. This comprehensive narrative review presents an overview of HPV in men, key risk factors, and primary prevention in men. The most effective preventive measure for HPV in males is vaccination. Males at high risk for HPV include those who smoke, have human immunodeficiency …

Nineteen genomic regions have been associated with high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC). We meta-analyzed >22 million variants for 398,238 women from the Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium (OCAC), UK Biobank (UKBB) and Consortium of Investigators of Modifiers of BRCA1/BRCA2 (CIMBA) to identify novel HGSOC susceptibility loci. Eight novel variants were associated with HGSOC risk. An interesting discovery biologically was TP53 3’-UTR SNP rs78378222-T’s association with HGSOC (per-T-allele relative risk (RR) = 1.44, 95% CI:1.28–1.62, P = 1.76 × 10−9). Polygenic scores (PGS) were developed using OCAC and CIMBA data and trained on FinnGen data. The optimal PGS included 64,518 …

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a heterogeneous disease with variable response to neoadjuvant systemic therapy (NAST). Patients with pathologic complete response (pCR) following NAST have improved survival. Our goal was to establish readily accessible imaging biomarker to identify which TNBC patients will have pCR. Building on prior favorable results in the literature, we hypothesized that manually measured tumor volume changes at DCE-MRI may predict pCR early during NAST. This prospective study included 287 stage I-III TNBC patients who underwent DCE-MRI at baseline, after two and four cycles of NAST, with pCR accessed at surgery (NCT02276443). Tumor volume and percentage tumor …
Transnational Networks Of Film Repetitions In East Asia : Proliferation And Limitations, Roman Kusaiko
Transnational Networks Of Film Repetitions In East Asia : Proliferation And Limitations, Roman Kusaiko
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
A growing number of contemporary film critics, influencers, and audiences criticize film remaking, a tested and successful Hollywood practice. The main complaints are a lack of originality, overreliance on repeated titles, and an openly commercial nature. Despite criticism, film remakes have existed for decades and are a vivid and resilient form of recycling under new cultural and geopolitical circumstances. Contemporary film remaking reflects the impacts of globalization, transnationalization, and the rapid development of new media and digitalization.
Nevertheless, there is a tendency to theorize on film remaking, often relying on the dichotomy of the source and a remake or, less …
The Mcgill Diverse Face Database: 92 Complex Mental States Across Socially Perceived Racial Categories, Gunnar Schmidtmann
The Mcgill Diverse Face Database: 92 Complex Mental States Across Socially Perceived Racial Categories, Gunnar Schmidtmann
School of Health Professions
Theory of Mind (ToM)—the ability to infer others’ mental states—is fundamental to social cognition. Social categorization, the grouping of individuals into in-group or out-group categories, shapes these inferences. These processes co-occur during facial perception, with recent research suggesting both shared neurocognitive mechanisms and modulation of ToM by social category cues. However, existing tools for studying the impact of racial diversity on social cognition are limited: some databases prioritize racial representation but restrict stimuli to the six basic emotions, while others broaden mental state diversity but lack diversity in social appearance. Here we introduce the McGill Diverse Face Database, a validated set …

Barriers To School Belonging Using Bronfenbrenner And Crt: A Teacher's Perspective, Rebecca Rosa
Barriers To School Belonging Using Bronfenbrenner And Crt: A Teacher's Perspective, Rebecca Rosa
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This qualitative, explanatory case study examined the barriers teachers experience fostering belonging in their students. Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems provided a theoretical framework through which the study was organized, while a Critical Race Theory (CRT) lens provided context for how racialized power and structural inequities shaped teachers’ ability to build belonging. The study focused on the experiences of six core subject teachers who worked in a majority-minority, urban charter high school in the Midsouth. Teachers participated in semi-structured interviews, reflecting on their experiences across multiple ecological levels, from classroom practices at a microsystem level to community influences at the macrosystem level. …

Interview No. 1799, Agustina Molina
Combined Interviews
Agustina Molina was born in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuaha in 1970 and immigrated to El Paso, Texas, when she was 16 years old in 1986. Growing up, she and the other kids in her family would go to her grandma’s house and help her make wreaths (coronas) for Dia de Los Muertos. Her grandma, Paublina, had a business where she would sell wreaths to people dedicated to her customers’ deceased loved ones. This tradition every year kept her family close to one another as they went through the celebration of Dia de Los Muertos and bonded over the rituals surrounding it. …

Synergistic Doping And Coating Strategy For Boosting Na0.7mno2 Cathode Performance In Sodium-Ion Batteries, Ahmad Helaley, Han Yu, Manashi Nath, Xinhua Liang
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Advancing sodium-ion battery (SIB) technology requires novel approaches to optimize cathode materials for improved electrochemical performance. In this study, we employ atomic layer deposition (ALD) to precisely modify the surface of P2-type Na0.7MnO2 cathodes with different coating materials including ZnO, NiO, and Al2O3, followed by post-annealing at 750°C for 10 hours. The strategic combination of ALD and thermal treatment can achieve thin film coating on particle surface and promote element doping into the near-surface lattice, as confirmed by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) analysis. The incorporation of Zn, Al, and Ni results in …

Linear poly(ethylenimine) (LPEI) is a hydration-sensitive polymer of interest for its breadth of application in areas that include medicine, energy, and materials science. To facilitate advances, this work demonstrates in situ Raman microscopy and self-modeling curve resolution (SMCR) analysis as an approach for investigating changes in LPEI structure during melting and crystallization under controlled heating and cooling conditions. With focus on neutral (freebase) LPEI, SMCR analysis of Raman data sets showed that the melting transition of anhydrous LPEI was well described by a pair of spectral vectors representing anhydrous crystalline and amorphous states. However, the transition from the melted to …

Exploring The Acceptability Of The Kimberley Mum’S Mood Scale For Perinatal Mental Health Screening In Gove District Hospital, North-East Arnhem Land, Tom P. Atkinson, Erica P. Spry, David Atkinson, Julia V. Marley, Emma Carlin
Journal of the Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet
Objective: Across Australia perinatal mental health challenges disproportionately impact Aboriginal women. Identifying Aboriginal women at risk of adverse mental health outcomes in the perinatal period is an important step in supporting their overall health and wellness. Current screening tools have significant limitations when used with Aboriginal women.
The Kimberley Mums Mood Scale (KMMS) is a culturally secure approach to screening for perinatal mental health disorders in Aboriginal women. It has been validated in the Kimberley region of Western Australia and may be able to improve mental health screening in other regions. In this study the KMMS was trialled at a …
