Generalization Bounds For Rank‑Sparse Neural Networks, Antoine Ledent, Rodrigo Alves, Yunwen Lei
Generalization Bounds For Rank‑Sparse Neural Networks, Antoine Ledent, Rodrigo Alves, Yunwen Lei
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
It has been recently observed in much of the literature that neural networks exhibit a bottleneck rank property: for larger depths, the activation and weights of neural networks trained with gradient-based methods tend to be of approximately low rank. In fact, the rank of the activations of each layer converges to a fixed value referred to as the “bottleneck rank”, which is the minimum rank required to represent the training data. This perspective is in line with the observation that regularizing linear networks (without activations) with weight decay is equivalent to minimizing the Schatten p quasi norm of the neural …

Design Principles For Customer‑Engaging Digital Service Systems: An Action Research Study, Keng Siau, Xiaofeng Chen, Xin Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Digital services represent a business approach employed by organizations to operate in the digital environment. However, systematic development guidelines for developing quality digital service systems are lacking in the literature. The authors identified four general challenges for developing and implementing customer-engaging digital service systems (CEDSS). By employing the method of canonical action research in a digital service system project, they derived 10 design principles for developing high-quality CEDSS. They empirically evaluated the design principles in the development project and through follow-up focus group sessions. The design principles provide applicable and actionable guidelines for the development of CEDSS.

Bias Testing And Mitigation In Llm-Based Code Generation, Dong Huang, Jie M. Zhang, Qingwen Bu, Xiaofei Xie, Junjie Chen, Heming Cui
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
As the adoption of LLMs becomes more widespread in software coding ecosystems, a pressing issue has emerged: does the generated code contain social bias and unfairness, such as those related to age, gender, and race? This issue concerns the integrity, fairness, and ethical foundation of software applications that depend on the code generated by these models but are underexplored in the literature. This paper presents a novel bias testing framework that is specifically designed for code generation tasks. Based on this framework, we conduct an extensive empirical study on the biases in code generated by five widely studied LLMs (i.e., …

In this paper we review the concept of “phase” defined in Class-Incremental Learning (CIL), i.e., learning new classes while not forgetting old ones. Due to this design, classic CIL algorithms are mostly offline or can handle only intensive data distribution shifts across the phases. However, real-world data streams are often online, usually with uncertain or untraceable changes in their data distributions. To this end, we design the per-step distribution shifts by modeling the class sampling weights using bell-shaped curves. Such a design respects the rise-and-fall nature and presents realistic but underexplored challenges for CIL: 1) The data non-stationarity across steps …

Genscore: Agent-Based Short-Answer Question Generation And Scoring In Software Engineering Courses, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta, Lwin Khin Shar
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Short-answer questions are commonly used in educational assessments, as they are often viewed as a more effective way than multiple-choice questions to determine whether students have achieved the intended learning outcomes. However, manually creating appropriate questions targeting different cognitive levels such as those defined by the Bloom’s Taxonomy, and grading text answers from students are not trivial tasks for instructors. Existing work on auto-question generation and scoring in computing education typically targets coding-based questions. However, in software engineering courses, assessments can extend beyond coding to understanding of processes, DevOps methodologies, system design, etc. This work aims to address the dual …
Pilot-C: Physics-Informed Low-Distortion Optimal Trajectory Compression, Kefei Wu, Baihua Zheng, Weiwei Sun
Pilot-C: Physics-Informed Low-Distortion Optimal Trajectory Compression, Kefei Wu, Baihua Zheng, Weiwei Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Location-aware devices continuously generate massive volumes of trajectory data, creating demand for efficient compression. Line simplification is a common solution but typically assumes 2D trajectories and ignores time synchronization and motion continuity. We propose PILOT-C, a novel trajectory compression framework that integrates frequency-domain physics modeling with error-bounded optimization. Unlike existing line simplification methods, PILOT-C supports trajectories in arbitrary dimensions, including 3D, by compressing each spatial axis independently. Evaluated on four real-world datasets, PILOT-C achieves superior performance across multiple dimensions. In terms of compression ratio, PILOT-C outperforms CISED-W, the current state-of-the-art SED-based line simplification algorithm, by an average of 19.2%. For …

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Educators are grappling with the best way to support the influx of English Learners enrolling in schools. As the numbers of EL students continues to rise, school administrators are seeking the best approaches to address the needs of this subset of students. Additionally, research has shown the impact that school bonding has on the academic performance of native language students. Specifically, research has shown that students with a positive emotional connection to the teachers, peers, and the institution outperform those with less attachment to the school. The purpose of this study is to see if school climate and school bonding …

Coal mining accidents are a major concern worldwide, necessitating effective safety measures and comprehensive analysis to prevent future accidents. Our proposed solution is the first attempt for Indian mines, inspired by the potential of Natural Language Processing (NLP) that can read and analyze vast repositories of accident records in seconds. In combination with machine learning (ML), NLP algorithms can extract unstructured text by eliminating manual data entry errors, reading poorly scanned reports, and understanding multiple versions of the event and cluster documents based on types that would otherwise take months to collate. In the case of accident records, it can …

This study presents a new approach of using gamma ray computed tomography (CT) in a form of arc multi-detector γ-Ray Densitometry (Arc MD-GRD) Technique where it measures the line averaged holdups of the phases which are projected on the diameter of the column to obtain their diameter profiles. This technique then was used to investigate the diameter profiles of the phases' holdups in a 12-inch diameter trickle bed reactor (TBR) using sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as the gas phase to represent to a certain extent the industrial higher density of the used gas phase due to either the type of the …

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive breast cancer subtype with limited treatment options due to the absence of estrogen (ER), progesterone (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) receptors. We previously developed highly adaptable polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer-based gel nanoparticles (GDP-uPA/GTI) with dual-targeting capabilities against urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) and ribonucleotide reductase R2 (R2) to achieve selective antitumor effects. In this study, we investigated the underlying mechanisms of GDP-uPA/GTI-induced tumor inhibition. In vivo, GDP-uPA/GTI significantly downregulated R2 expression and activated caspase 8 and caspase 3, indicating caspase-dependent apoptosis. Histological evaluation of major organs revealed no observable toxicity. …

Learning-Assisted Schedulability Analysis: Opportunities And Limitations, Sanjoy Baruah, Pontus Ekberg, Marion Sudvarg
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present the first (to our knowledge) Deep-Learning based framework for real-time schedulability-analysis that guarantees to never incorrectly mis-classify an unschedulable system as being schedulable, and is hence suitable for use in safety-critical scenarios. We relate applicability of this framework to well-understood concepts in computational complexity theory: membership in the complexity class NP. We apply the framework upon the widely-studied schedulability analysis problems of determining whether a given constrained-deadline sporadic task system is schedulable on a preemptive uniprocessor under both Deadline-Monotonic and EDF scheduling. As a proof-of-concept, we implement our framework for Deadline-Monotonic scheduling, and demonstrate that it has a …

Catalytic Synthesis Of Iron-Doped Graphitic Aerogels From Poly(Phloroglucinol-Terephthalaldehyde – Urethane) Precursors, Stephen Yaw Owusu, Rushi U. Soni, Chariklia Sotiriou-Leventis
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
We report a new class of graphitic carbon aerogel precursors based on iron oxide-doped poly(phloroglucinol-terephthalaldehyde–urethane) (T-POL/PU-FeOx) networks. The hybrid polymeric network incorporates a rigid aromatic triisocyanate, tris(4-isocyanatophenyl)methane, which reacts in situ with the hydroxyl groups of phloroglucinol to form a polyurethane-containing framework. Monolithic aerogels derived from this system undergo catalytic graphitization at significantly reduced temperatures (800–1500 °C) compared to conventional graphitization (2500–3300 °C). An oxidative ring fusion aromatization step (240 °C, air) prior to pyrolysis enhanced the degree of graphitization. The resulting graphitic aerogels were characterized by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, TGA, TEM, SEM, XPS, and N₂ sorption porosimetry. Compared to …

Quasi-Judicial: A History And Tradition, Beau J. Baumann, Jed Handelsman Shugerman

In challenging the historical assumptions underlying the unitary executive theory, scholars have made several seemingly unrelated discoveries. First, "judicial" power was conceived in English law as a subset of "executive" authority. Second, Congress at or near the Founding insulated certain court-like comissions from presidential control. Finally, the "quasi-judicial" and "quasi-legislative" powers that were central to the holding of Humphrey's Executor flowed from a forgotten nineteenth-century legal tradition was guiding Congress's construction of the modern state. This Essay connects these findings into a single claim: generations of American stretching back past the Founding have instinctively insulated administrators granted quasi-judicial functions from …

As a matter of original public meaning, Article I’s Necessary and Proper clause is the starting point for both Congress’s power to create offices and the limits on that power.
We believe that many legal scholars have demonstrated that, as a matter of original public meaning, the term “executive power” did not imply a presidential removal power, and Article II did not imply an indefeasible (unconditional) presidential removal power. By contrast, Article I’s Necessary and Proper Clause is a basis for limiting congressional power that is more historically grounded in original public meaning and in early practice. Tenure protections and …

Increased interest and investigation into the sustainability of broiler production has led to a need for reliable and repeatable means to measure water intake and its conversion rate into salable meat. Therefore, a study was conducted to characterize the water intake and water conversion ratio (WCR) of male and female broilers from four modern broiler strains. Two of these lines represented fast growing broiler strains (FGB A and FGB B) targeting a small bird market and two represented high yielding broiler strains (HYB A and HYB B). Three replicates of 25 sexed broilers from each line were placed into 24 …

Precision agriculture technology (PAT) is often viewed as a potential driver of future efficiency gains in farming. Using within-farm variation from an unbalanced panel of Kansas farms, this study examines the impact of PAT bundles on efficiency in generating gross revenue. On average, we find little evidence that these technologies improve efficiency. However, among less efficient farms, several bundles are linked to notable efficiency gains, underscoring the importance of accounting for farm heterogeneity.

The Singapore Court of Appeal held a law prohibiting male–male sexual intercourse (s 377A of the Penal Code) unenforceable on non-rights-based grounds. The court's remarks about the rights to life and liberty (including whether sexual orientation is mutable), freedom of expression, and equality are obiter. But they are significant, since in Singapore, there are few constitutional rights cases and the courts focus on spelling out the limits to executive and legislative power without necessarily striking down exercises of such power on rights grounds. Indeed, the obiter dicta prompted the Legislature to repeal s 377A. Given the repeal, the obiter dicta …

This article seeks to analyze the legal, market, and institutional features needed to become an international hub for debt restructuring. To that end, it examines the strategy adopted by Singapore as well as the market and institutional factors generally found in other leading legal and financial centers such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Hong Kong. It is argued that in jurisdictions that have traditionally had creditor-oriented insolvency systems, such as Singapore, the United Kingdom, and Hong Kong, one of the primary challenges when enhancing the restructuring framework for debtors is ensuring that the insolvency system remains protective …

The Mississippi Alluvial Plain (MAP) of Arkansas is a landscape where many wetlands have been altered for use as aquaculture ponds or agricultural ditches. Commercial harvest of freshwater turtles within the MAP is not restricted or limited, with reported harvest numbers for 2019 alone exceeding 4000 for spiny softshell turtles (Apalone spinifera) and 39,000 for red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans). Herein, we attempt to provide baseline estimates of freshwater turtle densities and community composition in aquaculture ponds and agricultural ditches of eastern Arkansas, the habitat types most frequently trapped by commercial harvesters. We used a capture-mark-recapture approach over 3 summers …

IMPORTANCE: Presenteeism-defined as continuing to work during an illness-poses a public health risk in the workplace and is especially hazardous within health care institutions where vulnerable patients may be exposed to nosocomial infections. Understanding the frequency and characteristics of health care personnel (HCP) who report presenteeism while ill with COVID-19 may help mitigate SARS-CoV-2 spread in hospitals and other health care institutions.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the frequency of presenteeism among HCP with symptomatic COVID-19, and to evaluate the demographic, occupational, and clinical factors associated with it.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This is an observational cohort study that uses data from …

Objective: We sought to evaluate the relationship between neighborhood-level deprivation and perinatal outcomes, particularly preterm birth, as well as COVID-19 outcomes among pregnant patients during the early pandemic.
Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of a prospective longitudinal cohort study that investigated the impact of prenatal COVID-19 exposure on perinatal outcomes. Pregnant patients were recruited 12/23/20-7/18/22 and serially assessed for COVID-19 exposure during pregnancy, with serum antibody testing, electronic medical record review, and patient report. For this secondary analysis, address at the time of delivery was used to categorize patients into low ADI (≤50th percentile Area Deprivation Index, indicating low …

Social media has evolved into a critical channel for communication, expression, and public influence, but it has also become a prevalent avenue for cybercrime, particularly in digitally advanced nations such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The rising complexity of online offences, coupled with anonymisation tools and cross-border digital behaviour, has made the attribution of social-media-based cyber incidents increasingly challenging for law enforcement. In this context, artificial intelligence (AI) offers the potential to strengthen digital investigations by providing intelligent, scalable, and evidence-driven attribution capabilities. This research develops an AI-assisted Internet Protocol (IP) attribution framework tailored specifically for UAE law enforcement …
