Efficient Algorithms For Mitigating Uncertainty And Risk In Reinforcement Learning, Xihong Su Dec 2025

Efficient Algorithms For Mitigating Uncertainty And Risk In Reinforcement Learning, Xihong Su

Doctoral Dissertations

Reinforcement learning~(RL) studies the methodologies of improving the performance of sequential decision-making for autonomous agents and has achieved remarkable success in domains such as games, robotics, autonomous systems, finance, and healthcare. The Markov Decision Process~(MDP) is a mathematical framework for modeling agent-environment interactions in sequential decision-making problems. There are two primary sources of uncertainty in RL: epistemic uncertainty and aleatoric uncertainty. In RL, risk refers to the potential for an agent's policy to lead to undesirable outcomes, especially when the environment is uncertain. In many domains, researchers seek policies that maximize the objectives while mitigating the uncertainty and risk in …

Firing Through Adversity: How Women Ceramicists Sustained Stoke-On-Trent’S Pottery Industry Between The Wars, Zachary Carlson Dec 2025

Firing Through Adversity: How Women Ceramicists Sustained Stoke-On-Trent’S Pottery Industry Between The Wars, Zachary Carlson

Theses

Between the First and Second World Wars, the pottery industry of Stoke-on-Trent endured economic depression, material shortages, and social upheaval. Within this volatile context, women ceramicists such as Susie Cooper and Clarice Cliff emerged as central figures in sustaining, and redefining British ceramic production. This thesis examines how these artists transformed adversity into innovation through design, entrepreneurship, and leadership, arguing that their work both stabilized the industry and advanced a distinctly feminist modernism grounded in labor, creativity, and resilience. Drawing on feminist design theory, class and economic analysis, and material culture studies, this research situates Cooper and Cliff within broader …

Imatinib mesylate (IM) and other BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase inhibitors (BCR-ABLi) are the mainstay of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) treatment. However, activation of circumventing signaling pathways and quiescence may limit BCR-ABLi efficacy. CDK8/19 Mediator kinases have been implicated in the emergence of non-genetic drug resistance. Dissecting the effects of pharmacological CDK8/19 inhibition on CML survival in response to BCR-ABLi, we found that a selective, non-toxic CDK8/19 inhibitor (CDK8/19i) Senexin B (SenB) and other CDK8/19i sensitized K562 cells to different BCR-ABLi via attenuation of cell cycle arrest. In particular, SenB prevented IM-induced upregulation of genes that negatively regulate cell cycle progression. SenB …

Enhancing Provider Knowledge And Compliance With Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Through Education: A 4-Week Plan, Maureen Odemena

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of vision impairment that can be prevented if found and treated early. Inadequate provider knowledge and adherence to guidelines, and low referral rates for screening at the project site, highlighted the need for targeted training. Studies show that evidence-based education plans improve engagement in DR screening. This quality improvement (QI) project aimed to impact knowledge, self-efficacy, and compliance among healthcare providers (HCPs—nurse practitioners and physicians) and increase screening rates by implementing an American Diabetes Association (ADA) guideline-based education plan over 4 weeks. Based on the health belief model and Kurt Lewin’s change theory, …

Of The Freedom Famine In Palestine, Ibtisam Barakat Dec 2025

Of The Freedom Famine In Palestine, Ibtisam Barakat

International Dialogue

In this searing essay, poet and author Ibtisam Barakat bears witness to what she names the “Freedom Famine” in Gaza—a deliberate, decades-long deprivation of basic human rights culminating in the catastrophic conditions of 2025. Writing from the United States while in conversation with Gazan author Omar Hammash, Barakat juxtaposes their drastically unequal realities: her safety and his daily encounters with death, displacement, and starvation. Through Hammash’s testimony—delivered amid constant bombardment and interrupted by news of a friend’s killing—Barakat documents the collapse of Gaza’s infrastructure, the mass targeting of aid workers, the lethal failures of international relief, and the killing of …

Dear Belvedere, Rabbya Naseer

International Dialogue

In this powerful open letter—originally delivered as a video message—artist Rabbya Naseer explains her decision to cancel her 2025 solo exhibition at Belvedere 21 after the museum refused to allow her proposed works addressing Palestine, colonialism, and contemporary violence. Framed as both personal testimony and institutional critique, the letter meditates on the ethics of waiting, perseverance (sabr), and the responsibility of artists amid geopolitical crisis. Naseer recounts months of stalled communication and escalating curatorial restrictions that ultimately rendered any engagement with the Israel–Palestine conflict “not possible.” Rejecting the museum’s demands for neutrality, depoliticization, and the substitution of existing …

A Scoping Review Of Maternal Active Smoking During Pregnancy And Low-Birth Weight, Naomi Sondang, Nindi Oktavia, Qorinah Estiningtyas Sakilah Adnani, Lani Gumilang, Hadi Susiarno, Victor Abiola Adepoju

Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)

Background: Low-birth weight (LBW; < 2.5 kg) infants are at increased risk of early mortality, impaired growth, neuro-developmental delay and chronic disease later in life. Maternal behavior, especially cigarette smoking, remains one of the most modifiable determinants of birth weight. We therefore synthesized recent evidence on the association between active maternal smoking during pregnancy and LBW.
Methods: Following PRISMA guidance, we systematically searched PubMed, Scopus and ScienceDirect for the period January 2020 to 31 January 2025 for English-language observational studies that quantified the relationship between active prenatal smoking and LBW. Risk of bias was appraised, and findings were summarized narratively.
Results: In total 26,650 papers were found and eight eligible studies (four cohort, three cross-sectional, one case-control) from Asia, Europe and the Middle East were included. Across all designs and exposure metrics—self-report, exhaled carbon-monoxide, urinary cotinine, and cord-blood DNA-methylation, active smoking was consistently associated with …

How does dance integration affect student perceptions of both dance and computer science? And what elements of dance contribute to differences in comprehension between dance-integrated and traditional lessons? A …

N-Aryl Phenoxazines As Polymer Supported Photocatalysts, Mary Kathryn Hall Dec 2025

N-Aryl Phenoxazines As Polymer Supported Photocatalysts, Mary Kathryn Hall

Master's Theses

In photosynthesis, the energy of sunlight is perfectly harnessed to facilitate the production of small molecules that are essential for plant life on earth. Inspired by this model of energy efficiency and simplicity, this work seeks to mimic that ability to use the energy in visible light to perform new and more efficient chemistries. Just like in photosynthesis, photocatalysts can act as chromophores absorbing light to excite electrons opening new pathways for previously untapped reactivity. Recent research has provided a wide range of small molecule reactions that are made possible or easier by the use of a photocatalyst. However, these …

Indexing A Spanish Choir Book To Trace Its Provenance, Amelia Lutz Dec 2025

Indexing A Spanish Choir Book To Trace Its Provenance, Amelia Lutz

Honors College Theses

A choir book from the rare books collection at Saint Meinrad Archabbey has little established about it beyond its dimensions and its label “Spanish Gradual.” By first exploring the historical context of liturgical books created after the Council of Trent for use in Spain, implementing a paleographical analysis, and indexing the chants included in the choir book (cantorale), I have established evidence to suggest its dates and likely origin. Following Fr. Columba Kelly’s framework for analyzing chant, I have begun a comprehensive index of the chant melodies and feast days included in the Spanish Gradual for Cantus Database.

The Finite Fourier Transform: Realizing The Irreducible Complex Representations Of The Special Linear Group Over A Finite Field, Kelly Jane Lyle Dec 2025

The Finite Fourier Transform: Realizing The Irreducible Complex Representations Of The Special Linear Group Over A Finite Field, Kelly Jane Lyle

Master's Theses

Classically, one of the central methods of understanding an abstract group has been through its representations in other structures, such as permutations of sets or linear transformations of vector spaces. As a detailed illustration of this method, we will focus on the matrix group SL(2,q), which consists of all invertible 2x2 matrices with entries in a finite field with q elements. We will outline the explicit construction of every (irreducible) complex representation of this group. Along the way we will also touch on foundational concepts in representation theory, such as characters and induced representations.

Do Need For Cognition And Need For Affect Moderate The Relationship Between Lecture Style, Learning Strategies, And Retention?, Mary Chapman

Dissertations

Boredom is detrimental to academic achievement. Using shallow learning strategies such as rote memorization is similarly unfavorable for success in academic settings compared to using deep learning strategies such as generating examples. Such is the consensus among scholars, but research conducted in both constructs reveals inconsistencies. The purpose of this study was to experimentally manipulate boredom and learning strategies to determine how boredom and learning strategies impact achievement, as well as to investigate whether certain individual differences, need for cognition and need for affect, change the relationships between boredom, learning strategies, and retention. In an online study, I recruited 131 …

Here, we examine whether measures of social support, isolation, and loneliness moderate outcomes to behavioral activation (BA) and exposure-based therapy (EXP) for individuals with GAD.

METHODS: This secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial included 69 participants (31 EXP, 38 BA). Participants completed the GAD-7, along with NIH PROMIS (Depression; Social Isolation; and Emotional, Instrumental, and Informational Support) and …

The Effect Of Shared Decisions On Intertemporal Choice, Rosemarie M. Davidson Dec 2025

The Effect Of Shared Decisions On Intertemporal Choice, Rosemarie M. Davidson

Masters Theses

Substance use disorders are a significant public health concern, and improving treatment outcomes requires a better understanding of the behavioral processes that influence drug consumption. Delay discounting, or the tendency to overvalue immediate reinforcers, is reliably more severe among individuals with substance use disorders. Recent work suggests that shared decision-making may increase tolerance for delayed rewards; however, prior studies used procedures that confounded delay to token delivery with delay to token exchange, limiting conclusions. The present study evaluates delay discounting across individual and social decision-making contexts using a traditional delay discounting paradigm.

Ten undergraduate participants completed sessions involving choices between …

Does Social Media Undermine Trust? Institutional Trust In Civil Society And Governance Institutions, Christianna Sirindah Parr

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

What is the relationship between social media use and trust in civil society and governance institutions? In many parts of Asia, trust in government remains high despite limited political accountability and civil liberties. This study examines whether online political expression reshapes institutional trust in governance institutions and civil society organizations. The analysis considers the dual role of social media as a site for civic engagement and a channel for disaffection with formal authority. Using data from the Asian Barometer, the findings show that political expression on social media is associated with lower trust in governance institutions and higher trust in …

Across five studies and one supplementary study (five preregistered; N = 3,215 adults), we found that men, more than women, avoided shared experiences (e.g., going to the movies, sharing food) with individuals of the same gender. Furthermore, persistent societal expectations that men should be unambiguously heterosexual underpinned this pattern: Men felt more apprehensive about signaling same-gender romance in platonic relationships than women did. In turn, romantic prototypicality drove the pattern of men (more than women) avoiding shared activities, above and beyond differences in how hedonic, enjoyable, and feminine the activities were; our findings further suggested that men’s reluctance to share …

A Learning‑Augmented Dynamic Programming Approach For Orienteering Problem With Time Windows, Guansheng Peng, Lining Xing, Fuyan Song Ma, Aldy Gunawan, Aldy Gunawan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent years have witnessed a surge of interest in solving combinatorial optimization problems (COPs) using machine learning techniques. Motivated by this trend, we propose a learning-augmented exact approach for tackling an NP-hard COP, the Orienteering Problem with Time Windows, which aims to maximize the total score collected by visiting a subset of vertices in a graph within their time windows. Traditional exact algorithms rely heavily on domain expertise and meticulous design, making it hard to achieve further improvements. By leveraging deep learning models to learn effective relaxations of problem restrictions from data, our approach enables significant performance gains in an …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multilingual reasoning remains a significant challenge for large language models (LLMs), with performance disproportionately favoring high-resource languages. Drawing inspiration from cognitive neuroscience, which suggests that human reasoning functions largely independently of language processing, we hypothesize that LLMs similarly encode reasoning and language as separable components that can be disentangled to enhance multilingual reasoning. To evaluate this, we perform a causal intervention by ablating language-specific representations at inference time. Experiments on 10 open-weight LLMs spanning 11 typologically diverse languages show that this language-specific ablation consistently boosts multilingual reasoning performance. Layer-wise analyses further confirm that language and reasoning representations can be effectively …
