A Blockchain-Based Participatory Design Framework For Sustainable Fashion: Integrating The Digital Product Passport System, Yunjae Lee, Chunmei Liang, Eunjung Cho, Eunkyoung Yang
IASDR Conference Series
While the fashion industry has exerted significant economic and cultural influence, its centralized structure has contributed to environmental degradation, resource waste, and social inequality. In response to growing societal and policy demands for sustainability, participatory design—redefining users as co-creators—has gained traction, particularly in academic discourse, as a pathway toward sustainable transformation. This study proposes a blockchain-based co-creation framework for sustainable fashion design that integrates Digital Product Passports (DPP) to ensure transparent and sustainable digital fashion ecosystem. Using a design-based research methodology, the framework is articulated through a six-stage participatory fashion design model detailing stakeholder roles, decision- making processes, DPP data …

The Effect Of Generative Ai On Design Students' Critical Thinking And Creative Achievement, Younjung Hwang, Jindo Hwang
IASDR Conference Series
This study investigated generative AI's impact on design students' critical thinking and creative achievement through a counterbalanced within-subjects experiment with 61 university students in southern China. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: Group A used traditional tools (Adobe software, handmade methods) followed by AI tools (Midjourney, DALL-E), while Group B used the reverse order. Students created graphic posters on different but comparable themes with a two- week interval between sessions. Data were collected through pre- and post-surveys using composite scores, blind expert evaluations of the design outputs, and focus group interviews. Results revealed a paradox: students reported significantly lower …
Reimagining Ai Futures. Solarpunk Narratives In Design Education, Anca Serbanescu, Kees Schuller
Reimagining Ai Futures. Solarpunk Narratives In Design Education, Anca Serbanescu, Kees Schuller
IASDR Conference Series
The narrative imaginary surrounding Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been predominantly shaped by science fiction cinema and television, with dystopian scenarios prevailing. This dominance poses a significant challenge by constraining designers’ creative capacities to envision alternatives beyond the dystopian genre. It reinforces fear-based representations, fostering a polarizing perspective of being either for or against AI, rather than embracing a range of diverse viewpoints. Such narrative fundamentalism jeopardizes the foundational values of freedom, equity, and democracy central to design education, narrowing the scope for fostering inclusive and complex understandings of AI. To counteract these limitations, this research introduces the Solarpunk movement as …

Despite the growing popularity of Design Thinking (DT) as a catalyst for organisational innovation, agility, and user-centred transformation, its actual adoption often remains superficial, fragmented, or symbolic. This study presents a systematic literature review of 64 peer-reviewed publications, aiming to identify, categorise, and interpret the key barriers to DT implementation in organisational contexts. Findings reveal that resistance to DT is rooted not merely in technical or procedural limitations, but in deeper organisational structures, cultures, and mental models. Through thematic synthesis, four recurring macro-barriers are identified: (1) uncertainty induced by change, (2) leadership-related constraints, (3) incompatibility of approaches and languages, and …

IASDR Conference Series
As digital, connected, and intelligent technologies continue to evolve, smart product designers are increasingly engaging with diverse types of data during the concept exploration stage. Scenario data, a structured and integrative set of contextual information, has received increasing attention for its potential to transform fragmented inputs into user-centered insights. However, how designers identify, interpret, and utilize scenario data remains under explored. This study investigates how experienced smart product designers leverage scenario data in the Problem Space, corresponding to the Discover and Define phases of the Double Diamond process, to support idea generation and problem framing. Drawing on a two-phase qualitative …

Ai-Empowered Cultural Heritage Integration: A Climate-Responsive Acoustic Design Framework, Xinyue Zhang, Lingge Tan, Donghui Cui, Stephen Jia Wang
IASDR Conference Series
In the context of accelerating globalization and growing frequency of extreme climate events, the preservation of regional cultural heritage and the pursuit of climate-responsive design present substantial challenges. In this study, a “Nature-Technology-Culture” tri-dimensional collaborative framework is proposed, offering a novel paradigm for the intelligent transformation of traditional craftsmanship. Drawing inspiration from the traditional “hexagonal eye” bamboo weaving technique of Pingjiang, Hunan, this study develops a modular soundscape installation system that combines fractal geometry reconstruction with parametric control technologies. The system integrates a bamboo framework with oil-paper composite cladding, achieving both cultural preservation and climate adaptability. A dynamic coupling mechanism …
Designing For Ethical Friction: Reclaiming Agency And Accountability In Ai-Supported Creativity, Peter Dalsgaard
Designing For Ethical Friction: Reclaiming Agency And Accountability In Ai-Supported Creativity, Peter Dalsgaard
IASDR Conference Series
With the growing integration of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) into creative workflows, AI tools increasingly function as co-creators. This transition challenges traditional notions of authorship, originality, and creative agency. This paper introduces "ethical friction": intentional design interventions that prompt users to reflect on the ethical dimensions of their creative decisions. Our central inquiry is: "What design mechanisms can support ethical reflection during creative work without overburdening or moralizing the user experience?". This question is underscored by the need to understand how AI-generated suggestions influence user decision-making and creative direction, both consciously and unconsciously, and how current generative systems may obscure …

Co-Designing Functional Undergarments To Enhance Wear Compliance In Adolescents With Idiopathic Scoliosis, Hiu Tung Yu, Jun Zhang, Derry Law, Joanne Yip
IASDR Conference Series
Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is a spinal disorder that commonly occurs during puberty in teenagers, characterized by a deformity of spinal curvature that can be initially observed through a poor physical profile and upper torso pain. Brace treatment is considered a primary method to realign the spine by applying external force at the curve’s apex, addressing the abnormality of spinal curves. Boston Brace offers a tailored fit for AIS undergoing prolonged treatment. However, the brace has disadvantages, including bulkiness, lack of breath ability, and rigidity. This often induce undesirable sensory discomfort and may reduce the user’s willingness to undergo treatment, leading …
Beyond Prefixes And Suffixes: A Systematic Literature Review Of Doctoral Education In Art And Design, Luke Feast
Beyond Prefixes And Suffixes: A Systematic Literature Review Of Doctoral Education In Art And Design, Luke Feast
IASDR Conference Series
This systematic review examines the literature on doctoral education in art and design. We analysed 1,086 publications to categorise different approaches to art and design doctorates. Our analysis reveals three distinct doctoral types aligned with different educational aims: knowledge development doctorates emphasising systematic research and theoretical contribution; social utility doctorates focusing on professional practice and practical application; and individual development doctorates prior it ising artistic self-discovery and creative expression. The apparent confusion in the field, reflected in debates about terminology such as "research through practice" versus "practice-based research," stems from fundamental disagreements about educational purposes rather than mere semantic differences. …

Institutional Design In Practice: Strategies And Insights From The Design Movement For Public, Li-Fang Chen, Yu-Ting Yang, Shu-Ting Ai, Chi-Yi Chang
IASDR Conference Series
This paper explores how institutional design can embed design thinking into public governance through the Taiwan’s Design Movement for Public in Taiwan. Initiated in 2023, the initiative integrates a two- stage open call mechanism, a multi-stakeholder co-creation platform, and design-oriented workflows that enable government agencies to reframe challenges, engage interdisciplinary teams, and implement context-specific spatial interventions. Drawing on preliminary field insights from transformation cases across Taiwan, the study explores how small-scale public works can serve as testbeds for policy translation, inter-agency collaboration, and procedural innovation. The findings suggest that by shifting design upstream—from downstream execution to early-stage problem definition—governments can …
The Emergence Of Cultural Signals In Typographic Systems, César Arturo Puertas, Juan Alfonso De La Ros
The Emergence Of Cultural Signals In Typographic Systems, César Arturo Puertas, Juan Alfonso De La Ros
IASDR Conference Series
This paper explores how through visual analysis of contemporary design of typographic systems in Colombia, it is possible to create a custom framework for clustering and analysis to help recognize the possible emergence of cultural signals of colonised communities and cultural groups. Based on that framework we described these signals in four categories: Abstracted indigenous heritage (cultural revival); hybrid graphic vernacular (vernacular typography); Indigenous linguistic forms (direct linguistic revival); and hybrid cultural abstraction (indirect linguistic revival). We argue that local/regional type design and typography are increasingly serving as a medium of cultural resistance (intentional or unintentional), where designers engage with …

Hauntological Speculation Device: Designing Lost Futures With Design Students And Generative Ai To Explore Alternative Socio-Technological Scenarios, Pedro Álvarez, José Tomás Labbé
IASDR Conference Series
This paper explores haunt ological speculation as an innovative approach to Speculative Design in undergraduate design education. While Speculative Design methodologies have gained prominence in design curricula, they often struggle to imagine future scenarios beyond apocalyptic narratives, leading to a form of "imaginative paralysis." To address this challenge, we integrate "hauntology" into Design epi stem ologies. Hauntology expands ontological frameworks by incorporating "the presence of absences"—events that could have occurred but did not materialize—as factors shaping the present, thereby broadening possibilities for imagining and designing futures beyond dominant contemporary logics. We present two case studies of "haunt ological speculation exercises" …

IASDR Conference Series
As industrial robotics increasingly enters creative and design domains, there is a growing need for educational platforms that support training in industrial robot control, planning, and system configuration. Existing training systems often assume that learners have knowledge of code-based robotics programming, which limits accessibility to creative practitioners. This paper presents the Augmented Reality-based Interactive Robotic Training Platform (AR-IRTP), which reinterprets core industrial robotics concepts, such as tool selection, workspace setup and motion planning, through embodied AR interaction. The platform is based on the Robotic Induction course from the DMaF Robotic Lab and structured using the Human-Robot Leader-Follower (HRLF) model to …
Reactivating The Unseen And Unheard: Posthuman Playfulness As Cultural Agency In Urban Ecologies, Yuying Jiang
Reactivating The Unseen And Unheard: Posthuman Playfulness As Cultural Agency In Urban Ecologies, Yuying Jiang
IASDR Conference Series
With the development of More-than-Human-Centered Design theory, culture has gradually been recognized as an active non-human agent in urban public spaces, attracting increasing attention in the field of design research. However, in the actual planning and operation of urban spaces, posthuman cultural elements—such as cultural memory, historical narratives, and aesthetic experience—are often marginalized. Consequently, the functions of space have become increasingly shaped by mainstream social norms and efficiency-oriented logic, further reinforcing rigid divisions between age, behavior, and use. For example, in urban playgrounds, adults are often excluded and deprived of the right to emotional expression and cultural participation in public …
Scaffolding Metacognition In Design With Generative Ai, Peter Dalsgaard
Scaffolding Metacognition In Design With Generative Ai, Peter Dalsgaard
IASDR Conference Series
This paper explores the potentials and pitfalls of Generative AI as a tool for thought in design, emphasizing its ability to scaffold meta cognition, i.e. the ability to reflect on, monitor, and regulate one's own thinking. While GenAI tools streamline creative tasks, they also risk encouraging passive use, over-reliance, and shallow engagement. The core challenge is to design these systems in ways that strengthen, rather than weaken, users’ reflective capacities. Drawing on research in meta cognition and cognitive scaffolding, as well as principles from design thinking that emphasize iterative sensemaking and reflective practice, the paper outlines strategies that foster active …

Bridging The Expectation–Reality Gap: A Systematic Design Approach To Facilitate Controllability In Human–Virtual Human Interaction, Lanxi Xiao, Qiong Wu, Yuhan Xie, Mengyu Chen, Zipeng Zhang, Xinyi Guo, Yuxin Zhu, Yating Li, Yan Dong
IASDR Conference Series
Virtual humans (VHs) are human-like intelligent agents increasingly used in human–artificial intelligence (AI) collaborative contexts, where control lability is essential for fostering user trust and ensuring a human-centered experience. Although widely adopted, VHs products are often reported to suffer from poor control lability due to the gap between the limited capabilities of narrow AI and users’ high expectations shaped by their anthropomorphic appearance. However, existing control lability theories focus primarily on action-level mechanisms such as undoing and redoing, providing limited support for users’ perceptual and cognitive understanding of interacting with and controlling AI-infused products. To bridge the expectation-reality gap, this …
The Ought-Is Problem: A Foundational Theory For Diagnosing The Ai-Driven Crisis In Design Education, Franklyn Mosher
The Ought-Is Problem: A Foundational Theory For Diagnosing The Ai-Driven Crisis In Design Education, Franklyn Mosher
IASDR Conference Series
The rapid proliferation of generative AI has precipitated a foundational crisis in design education, challenging long-standing pedagogical models and the very definition of authentic student work. While its symptoms are widely recognized, the design field lacks a formal theory for diagnosing this and other systemic failures. This paper introduces and formalizes the "Ought-Is Problem" as a foundational theory for design critique, defining it as the consequential gap between a designer's idealized model of a system and its users ("Ought") and the observable, complex reality of human behavior ("Is"). We argue that this cognitive dissonance is the root cause of many …

Reimagining Death And Rituals Through Design: Memorial Diamond Jewellery As A Speculative Probe, Yiwen Cheng, Jie Sun
Reimagining Death And Rituals Through Design: Memorial Diamond Jewellery As A Speculative Probe, Yiwen Cheng, Jie Sun
IASDR Conference Series
Death remains one of the most enduring cultural taboos, often met with silence and avoidance across both Western and Eastern societies. Although design research has increasingly engaged with death through the lens of thanatosensitive design, it has largely focused on supporting the bereaved, leaving the perspectives and agency of the dying themselves under explored. This study explores the memorial diamond as a speculative medium for reimagining death rituals and the relationships between the deceased and the bereaved. Using a research through design approach, we engaged speculative design as both a future-oriented lens and a creative method to examine these phenomena. …

From Projecting Futures To Projecting Otherwise: An Anticipatory Archaeology Of Emerging Design Epistemologies, Marc Chataigner
From Projecting Futures To Projecting Otherwise: An Anticipatory Archaeology Of Emerging Design Epistemologies, Marc Chataigner
IASDR Conference Series
How to overcome design ‘defuturing’ effects? Design scholarship argues that design’s adverse contributions stem from its limited projective capacities to reflect about what design designs and the inherent power structures it conceals. Several design approaches emerged to equip designers with philosophical and social science frameworks and overcome design’s ‘defuturing’ effects. Yet, the ability of these theoretical frameworks to fundamentally change design remains debated. This paper contributes to this discussion by exploring the epistemological underpinnings of five approaches – Transition Design, Mission-Oriented Design, Speculative Design, Pluriversal Design, and More-Than- Human Design. We develop an ‘anticipatory archaeology’ of these theoretical formations to …
