Improving Psychiatric Paraprofessional Preparedness Through Mental Health First Aid Training In An Outpatient Mental Health Clinic, Anisha Hampton Jan 2026

Improving Psychiatric Paraprofessional Preparedness Through Mental Health First Aid Training In An Outpatient Mental Health Clinic, Anisha Hampton

DNP Scholarly Projects

BACKGROUND: Paraprofessional staff in outpatient mental health clinics play a critical role in monitoring clients with serious mental illness (SMI) and supporting continuity of care in community-based settings. However, the absence of standardized training contributes to variability in staff knowledge, confidence, and ability to recognize early signs of mental health deterioration. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an evidence-based training designed to improve mental health literacy and crisis response skills among frontline workers.

METHODS: This quality improvement project utilized a pre-post design within a Plan-DoStudy-Act (PDSA) framework at an outpatient mental health clinic. Paraprofessional staff completed the Mental Health Literacy …

Mansfield And More, Dorothea A. Boulukos Jan 2026

Mansfield And More, Dorothea A. Boulukos

2026

In this paper, I argue that Jane Austen’s treatment of Fanny Price, a character who embodies the conservative feminine ideal, exposes the contradictions within that ideal. I take Hannah More’s 1799 Strictures on the Modern System of Female Education: With the View of the Principles and the Conduct Prevalent Among Women of Rank and Fortune as a paradigmatic representation of this ideal. Fanny is often in agreement with More, not least on the subject of German playwrights, whom both women find subversive. Fanny also obeys many of More’s prescriptions: she is quiet, submissive to male authorities, and prone to self-doubt. …

In Their Own Words: Why First-Generation Minority Students Take On Leadership Roles At Hispanic-Serving Institutions, Suzette Ramsundar Ed.D Jan 2026

In Their Own Words: Why First-Generation Minority Students Take On Leadership Roles At Hispanic-Serving Institutions, Suzette Ramsundar Ed.D

Theses and Dissertations

While there is an abundance of research on student leadership and how it impacts student retention (Tinto, 1987 and Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005), it is typically from the university's perspective. This phenomenological study, however, investigated the experiences and perceptions of first-generation minority students who commuted to campus and pursued leadership roles at Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs). Utilizing phenomenological methodology, this research examined the lived experiences of eight student leaders to understand how they made meaning of their leadership engagement.

Student leaders in this study shared the details of the significant challenges they navigated, including financial pressures, commuting demands, cultural barriers, and …

Threshold Asymmetric Conditional Autoregressive Range (Tacarr) Model, Isuru Ratnayake, V. A. Samaranayake Jan 2026

Threshold Asymmetric Conditional Autoregressive Range (Tacarr) Model, Isuru Ratnayake, V. A. Samaranayake

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper introduces a Threshold Asymmetric Conditional Autoregressive Range (TACARR) model for analyzing the daily price ranges of financial assets. The proposed formulation assumes that the conditional expected range switches between two regimes, representing upward and downward market states, with the disturbance distribution also allowed to vary across regimes. A self-adjusting threshold component, determined by past values of the series, is used to identify the prevailing market regime. In this way, the model is able to capture asymmetric and heteroscedastic volatility behavior in financial markets. The TACARR model is designed to address several limitations of existing price range models, including …

Electronic Bills Of Lading And Blockchain Technology: A Regulatory Perspective, Hsin-Hua Tsai Jan 2026

Electronic Bills Of Lading And Blockchain Technology: A Regulatory Perspective, Hsin-Hua Tsai

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Information and communications technology (ICT) systems are increasingly relevant to the maritime sector. Regarding the revolution of the bill of lading, many shipping lines and other technology startups have been looking into developing viable electronic transport documents that have the same functions as paper bills of lading to reduce supply chain risks. The limitations of the paper-based process have become increasingly visible in the COVID-19 crisis. The main purpose of the article is to analyze the application of blockchain bills of lading, which utilizes computational logic to create the digital ledger, and users can set up algorithms and rules to …

Emotional Complexity In Context: Within-Person Variability In Emotional Granularity, Emotion Covariation, And Emodiversity, Kristen Diann Petagna Jan 2026

Emotional Complexity In Context: Within-Person Variability In Emotional Granularity, Emotion Covariation, And Emodiversity, Kristen Diann Petagna

Doctoral Dissertations

Key features of emotional complexity include emotional granularity, the ability to identify feelings with precision; emodiversity, the number and evenness of different emotions experienced; and emotion covariation, the tendency to experience positive and negative emotions independently. Prior work has largely treated these features as trait-like. This dissertation examines whether these features are dynamic by investigating how they vary within individuals over time and across contexts. In Chapter 2, participants (N =123) reported their emotions multiple times a day for 6 weeks and completed biweekly assessments of mental health symptoms. Emotional granularity and covariation increased over time, whereas emodiversity decreased, and …

A Variance Decomposition Approach To Inconclusives In Forensic Black Box Studies, Amanda Luby, Joseph B. Kadane Jan 2026

A Variance Decomposition Approach To Inconclusives In Forensic Black Box Studies, Amanda Luby, Joseph B. Kadane

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Work

In the USA, ‘black box’ studies are increasingly being used to estimate the error rate of forensic disciplines. A sample of forensic examiner participants is asked to evaluate a set of items whose source is known to the researchers but not to the participants. Participants are asked to make a source determination (typically an identification, exclusion, or some kind of inconclusive). We study inconclusives in two black box studies, one on fingerprints and one on bullets. Rather than treating all inconclusive responses as functionally correct (as is the practice in reported error rates in the two studies we address), irrelevant …

Biological Use Of Molybdenum And Tungsten Stems Back To 3.4 Billion Years Ago, Rika Anderson, Aya S. Klos, Morgan S. Sobol, Joanne S. Boden, Eva E. Stüeken, Kurt O. Konhauser, Betül Kaçar Jan 2026

Biological Use Of Molybdenum And Tungsten Stems Back To 3.4 Billion Years Ago, Rika Anderson, Aya S. Klos, Morgan S. Sobol, Joanne S. Boden, Eva E. Stüeken, Kurt O. Konhauser, Betül Kaçar

Biology Faculty Work

The biological significance of the transition metal molybdenum (Mo) lies in its function at the catalytic center of several enzymes that drive a wide spectrum of redox reactions underlying global biogeochemical cycles, yet a paradox persists. While modern life ubiquitously relies on Mo, geochemical evidence suggests that its availability in early Earth’s anoxic oceans was extremely limited. Modern organisms can use Mo down to trace levels; however, the rates of Mo-dependent metabolisms slow down when Mo availability decreases, posing fundamental questions about the extent to which changing Mo abundances shaped the evolution of molybdoenzymes, and when early life began harnessing …

Autonomous Uav Mission Planning Under Threat Using Model Predictive Control With Proportional-Navigation Pursuers, Mehmet B. Ozcelik Jan 2026

Autonomous Uav Mission Planning Under Threat Using Model Predictive Control With Proportional-Navigation Pursuers, Mehmet B. Ozcelik

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses

Autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) operating in contested environments must

complete mission objectives while avoiding restricted regions, radar exposure, and pos-

sible interception. This thesis develops a MATLAB-based simulation framework for

two-dimensional UAV mission planning under threat using model predictive control and

proportional-navigation chasers. The mission requires the UAV to travel from a start

location to a goal while visiting required checkpoints and avoiding no-fly zones and radar

regions. A chaser attempts to intercept the UAV using either a basic pure-pursuit-style

law or a proportional-navigation guidance law.

The framework integrates environment generation, augmented visibility-graph rout-

ing, waypoint management, UAV kinematic …

Llm-Driven Closed-Loop Uav Control With Obstacle-Aware Model Predictive Control, Halimcan Yasar Jan 2026

Llm-Driven Closed-Loop Uav Control With Obstacle-Aware Model Predictive Control, Halimcan Yasar

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses

This thesis presents a closed-loop control architecture for uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) in which a large language model (LLM) serves as a high-level decision module operating over a persistent, metric 3D world model.

Rather than generating low-level commands or open-loop plans, the LLM selects one parameterized maneuver per decision step from a small, verified library of flight primitives conditioned on a structured representation of the drone state, tracked object positions, and mission specification.

Translational motion is executed by a planar model predictive controller (MPC) with soft obstacle avoidance, using obstacle hypotheses provided by the LLM, so that safety-critical constraint handling …

"Queens Of Ghost-Land" 134 Years Later: Un-Masking An Appalachian Witchcraft Accuser, Aine Norris Jan 2026

"Queens Of Ghost-Land" 134 Years Later: Un-Masking An Appalachian Witchcraft Accuser, Aine Norris

English Faculty Publications

In 1891, newspapers across America printed a story about witches in the Appalachian Mountains and the alleged powers they possessed to control their small farming community. The article was scathing in accusation and ultimately contributed to continued othering of the women profiled, increasing their visible vulnerabilities of class, gender, and societal status. Despite an implied familiarity with the region, the article was published with initials for its byline, an act that simultaneously identified the author to locals as historian Eva Grant while offering her anonymized national protection as a subject expert. For over five years the accusations were re‐printed in …

Defamation, Privacy, And The First Amendment: Cases & Problems (3rd Ed.), George Biashvili Jan 2026

Defamation, Privacy, And The First Amendment: Cases & Problems (3rd Ed.), George Biashvili

Books

I created this resource in anticipation of teaching my Torts II class, which will primarily explore defamation and privacy torts. Though I searched for a suitable coursebook, I found that none contained all of the opinions I consider essential for teaching the nuances and complexities of these subjects. Additionally, I wanted to spare my students the exorbitant price tags associated with traditional law school texts. Hence, I assembled a collection of relevant privacy and defamation cases that align with the objectives of my course. Each case is accompanied by a set of questions to further stimulate class discussion. Where I …

Limits On Damages For Breach Of A Forum Selection Clause, Coyle, John, Monestier, Tanya Jan 2026

Limits On Damages For Breach Of A Forum Selection Clause, Coyle, John, Monestier, Tanya

Santa Clara Law Review

When a plaintiff sues in a court other than the one designated in a forum selection clause, the defendant’s remedial options are limited. It can ask the court to dismiss the case outright. Or it can ask the court to transfer the case to the designated forum. The defendant typically cannot, however, recover money damages—in the form of attorneys’ fees and related expenses—that it incurs in the course of persuading the court that transfer or dismissal is appropriate. This is because the conventional wisdom among judges has long been that damages are not available for breach of a forum selection …

Inexcusable? Building An Artificial Intelligence Micro- Expert On Contract Excuse Doctrine, Burge, Mark Edwin Jan 2026

Inexcusable? Building An Artificial Intelligence Micro- Expert On Contract Excuse Doctrine, Burge, Mark Edwin

Santa Clara Law Review

This Article details and advocates for a general methodology for creating a “microexpert” grounded in a user-defined set of legal sources and widely-accessible tools for integrating generative artificial intelligence (AI) into legal analysis. The study focuses particularly on background contract excuse doctrines of impossibility, impracticability, and frustration of purpose, which are collectively a methodologically challenging area of law to rationalize due to fact-intensive variables that undermine their predictability. Particular challenges include assessing the foreseeability of the event that led to the contract’s non-performance, the extent of the hardship or burden on the party seeking excuse, and the purpose of the …

Constitutional Structures In Private Law And The Example Of Waste Law, Fraley, Jill M. Jan 2026

Constitutional Structures In Private Law And The Example Of Waste Law, Fraley, Jill M.

Santa Clara Law Review

This Article proposes three criteria for when a private law mechanism performs a structural constitutional function: when it constrains present authority in the name of future stability, when it disperses enforcement to avoid centralized authority, and when it has structural entrenchment to avoid ordinary displacement. While many private law doctrines contain constitutional resonances or echo rights, the core of constitutional law is the power structure—a precondition for the protection of those rights. Constitutional structures have three key components: self-binding through time, separation and diffusion of power, and entrenchment beyond ordinary politics. For a private law doctrine to do more than …

Journal Articles: Pediatrics

We performed this systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the efficacy and safety of anticoagulation therapy versus no anticoagulation in pediatric patients with cerebral sinovenous thrombosis (CSVT). Eligible studies included pediatric patients with CSVT that compared anticoagulation to no anticoagulation and reported on at least one relevant outcome (mortality, neurological deficit, thrombus resolution, recurrence, and bleeding). Meta-analysis reported risk ratios (RR) or differences (RD) (95% CIs) and absolute effects per 1000 patients. Risk of bias was assessed using ROBINS-I, and the certainty of evidence was evaluated with GRADE. After removing duplicates, we screened 8925 records independently and in duplicate, from …

The Loss Of Symbolic Imagination And The Decline Of Christian Practice: A Blondelian Perspective, Cathal Doherty Jan 2026

The Loss Of Symbolic Imagination And The Decline Of Christian Practice: A Blondelian Perspective, Cathal Doherty

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

The contemporary decline in Christian church-going and sacramental participation is due in part to the legacy of the Enlightenment, which valorizes the life of the mind over actual practice, a distortion due to a conceptualism of human action, widespread in Western thought, that sees in human action the mere execution of ideas. From here, it is a short step to the willful blindness that restricts our action to the execution of exclusively human ideas and concepts, to the exclusion of the divine, quietly repudiating the claims of orthodox Christian revelation that the divine intention is symbolically realized for us in …

Integrating Routine Hiv Screening Into A Sexually Transmitted Infection Panel At An Opioid Addiction Treatment Facility: A Dnp Clinical Practice Change, Stephanie Bass

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

People who use drugs are at increased risk of contracting human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, hepatitis B infection, hepatitis C, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) due to high-risk behaviors, including needle sharing, incarceration, multiple sex partners, and unprotected sex. Individuals with substance use disorders are also at increased risk for liver dysfunction, renal impairment, and other medical comorbidities associated with chronic substance use. Although many organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), recommend routine screening and laboratory monitoring in high-risk populations, many addiction treatment facilities in the United States lack standardized protocols for bloodborne infection, STI screening, …

A Hierarchical And Multidimensional Approach To Profiling Students’ Digital Skills In Educational Technology, Emil S. Frashëri, Eleni F. Vangjeli Jan 2026

A Hierarchical And Multidimensional Approach To Profiling Students’ Digital Skills In Educational Technology, Emil S. Frashëri, Eleni F. Vangjeli

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)

This study investigates university students’ digital competence through a multidimensional and person‑centered analytical framework grounded in bifactor–Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling (B‑ESEM). Digital competence was conceptualized across four functional skill domains and a general competence factor, reflecting contemporary perspectives on technology‑enhanced learning and student readiness. To overcome a common limitation in traditional Latent Profile Analysis (LPA), the conflation of overall competence levels with relative skill configurations, this study employed B‑ESEM–derived factor scores to preserve both hierarchical structure and multidimensionality. Using data from 599 university students, a four‑profile solution emerged, capturing distinct patterns of digital skill strengths and weaknesses. Gender and programming …

A Critical Toponymy Of Humboldt County: Ethics And Tensions Within Efforts To Change Place Names, Serenity Aleta Wood Jan 2026

A Critical Toponymy Of Humboldt County: Ethics And Tensions Within Efforts To Change Place Names, Serenity Aleta Wood

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This project explores how Humboldt regional placenames enact toponymic silencing and how Indigenous activists challenge colonial names and geographies, advancing un-settled interpretations that position language revitalization/regeneration as a means of revitalizing relationships with the land. Mobilizing Dr. Cutcha Risling Baldy’s concept of (re)naming, I analyze two case studies, the Baduwa’t documentary and the Tolowa Dee-ni' Nation’s film A'-t'i Xwee-ghayt-nish: Still, We Live On, as well as three additional artistic works: Sarah Biscarra Dilley’s every pattern needs a passage, Sasha taqwšəblu LaPointe’s Thunder Song, and Jaune Quick-to-See Smith’s painting, State Names. In tandem with film and poetry analysis, I survey local …

“Twist But Don’T Break:” Constellating Past And Present Barriers In Black Queer Multimodal Publishing That Shift Text Into Subtext; Addressing Acceptance Into Queer Creative Communities And The Void Of Black Voices Within, Kae Ann Dennert-Frederick

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

What does it look like to reframe our understanding of intersectional work? Looking at multimodality I will walk through the multiple frameworks by asking how Black Queer publishing of Young Adult fiction uses visuals to describe what cannot be said and what choices are made to show community structure and language, while also having to adapt for publication standards. I have researched this by looking into examples of Queer publishing (any representation of queerness in a form of publishing—in the text and sometimes in the authors' identity), as well as authors’ use of visuals to say what cannot be said …

The Borderline Constitution, Pratheepan Gulasekaram Jan 2026

The Borderline Constitution, Pratheepan Gulasekaram

Publications

This Feature identifies and theorizes a distinct constitutional regime that federal courts have constructed at, adjacent to, and because of the nation’s border. Drawing together strands of First, Fourth, Fifth, and Fourteenth Amendment law, along with habeas doctrine, constitutional torts, tribal sovereignty, and separation-of-powers concerns, this Feature demonstrates how constitutional guarantees systematically recede in the border’s shadow. These deviations from canonical and mainstream constitutional norms authorize intrusive state invasions of privacy and other fundamental rights, abdicate judicial oversight in favor of outsized executive discretion, and entrench racial and religious subordination.

The Feature further demonstrates that the effects of border exceptionalism …
