Bali, a thousand temple island, is an ideal destination for spiritual tourism with magnificent temples containing a variety of unique religious carvings, statues, and ornaments. The beauty of Bali’s religious rituals, social and cultural events, and cultural performances underpin its spiritual tourism. An emerging body of literature has reported spiritual tourism and spiritual tourism is one of the pillars of sustainable tourism development (UNWTO, 2015). Religious tourism is a growing segment with significant economic impacts, however, limited research focuses on developing spiritual tourism and none of this in the North of Bali. This research takes a qualitative case study approach …

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

This empirical study examines the patterns of internet use during Hajj, with the broader aim of providing suggestions on how organisations can improve risk communication at crowded religious venues using traditional and new media. The research team adopted a convenience sampling strategy to conduct in-person surveys of 348 Hajj pilgrims in the vicinity of the Grand Mosque in Madinah, Saudi Arabia during the October 2013 season. Of these, 150 pilgrims used the internet and their responses were analysed using simple descriptive statistics and binary regression analyses. The findings of this study suggest that Hajj pilgrims prefer accessing the internet through …

Religious Servicescape: Does Convenience Matter For Revisit Intentions And Positive Word Of Mouth?, Ghada Talat Alhothali, Islam Elgammal, Felix T. Mavondo

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Umrah is an optional holy ritual that is highly rewarded when performed in the month of Ramadan. Hence, managing such an event is a challenging mission facing stakeholders. However, limited studies have examined the quality of services provided in the Umrah site (i.e., the Holy Mosque in the city of Makkah, Saudi Arabia) from the pilgrims’ perspective. The current study examines the influence of religious servicescape on service convenience and investigates whether service convenience matters to pilgrims. Further, the study tests the role of religious attractiveness (i.e., of the Kaaba) on pilgrims’ behavioural outcomes (i.e. intention to revisit and Positive …

What Do We Know About Business Angels’ Decision Making Research Development? A Document Co-Citation Analysis, Dina Vasić, Alenka Slavec Gomezel

Economic and Business Review

Business angels (BAs) mitigate the financial gap of early-stage ventures and get actively involved in ventures they invest in. Their crucial role in the start-up ecosystem is spurring interest in their decision-making processes when making investments. However, the research about their investment decision making is crumpled. So far, we know the knowledge base about BA decision making comes from a blend of interdisciplinary studies where psychology and finance had a significant impact in pushing the research to new levels. With this study, we review knowledge dyads in the BA decision-making field through bibliometric co-citation analysis.

Lecture Four: The Pilgrim Church In Holland, Earl Clement Davis Mar 2022

Lecture Four: The Pilgrim Church In Holland, Earl Clement Davis

The Rise and Development of the Congregational Polity and Spirit in New England

Davis begins with the courting and marriage of the widow Mrs. Thomasine Boyes and Francis Johnson, who was then in Clink prison. The Elders of the Amsterdam Church found her overly flashy and this nearly split the church. The Scrooby Church first arrived in Amsterdam and initially took up with the London Amsterdam Church. Feeling unwelcome and unaligned, they moved to Leyden with John Robinson as the learned and effective minister. Despite this, there were still concerns that the Scrooby Church would be absorbed into the broader (overly liberal) religious culture of Holland. It is because of this that they …

Lecture Three: Brief Definition Of Certain Terms Used In The History Of Free Churches, Earl Clement Davis Mar 2022

Lecture Three: Brief Definition Of Certain Terms Used In The History Of Free Churches, Earl Clement Davis

The Rise and Development of the Congregational Polity and Spirit in New England

Davis cites two sources for the English Reformation:a growth of popular feeling against the Catholic Church, and the personal and political troubles of Henry VIII. Henry VIII moved ultimate authority from Rome to the English monarch. But the popular movement for free inquiry and universal priesthood continued to press further change. Definitions clarified as they pertain to this historical context are: dissenters, non-conformists, independents, and "the New England way".

Lecture Two: Earliest Traces Of Congregational Polity And Spirit, Earl Clement Davis

The Rise and Development of the Congregational Polity and Spirit in New England

Lecture Two looks back prior to the Scrooby Church at earlier dissenters from religious conformity, and in favor of free inquiry. He begins in 1165 with 30 weavers in the diocese of Worcester who made light of "priestly power." They were branded heretics and banished. From there he discusses the early Separatists and important figures in the Congregational Church's founding. These include Robert Browne, John Robinson, John Greenwood, Henry Barrowe, and Francis Johnson.

Teachers’ Perceptions On The Implementation Of Professional Learning Communities And The Relationship To Student Achievement, Marian Arnett Mar 2022

Teachers’ Perceptions On The Implementation Of Professional Learning Communities And The Relationship To Student Achievement, Marian Arnett

ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present

For decades, mandates have driven the way we educate our students. Seemingly ever since the inception of No Child Left Behind (NCLB), schools across the nation have struggled to meet federal standards for student success. However, when many schools still failed to show a significant amount of achievement, they became labeled "Priority" or "Focus" schools under the federally mandated laws of NCLB. The vital need to promote best educational practices leads to the educational strategy of teacher collaboration. Research calls for higher levels of teacher collaboration in the educational setting as a strategy to address lackluster performance trends (Anrig, 2015). …

The Impact Of Mindfulness Practices In Teachers, Shawn M. Martin Hettinga

ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present

Mindfulness training has been identified as a promising means for cultivating social and emotional competencies and reducing stress. The purpose of the quantitative pre-post study using convenience sampling of educators in a rural K-12 in the Arkansas River Valley was to examine whether teachers’ participation in mindfulness activities were associated with changes in levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and job satisfaction. The study used the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and the Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS) and measured the responses from novice (0-3 years) and experienced (4+ years) teachers. The findings revealed that there was no difference between the …

Blog Posts

We are halfway through the semester, and the SouthTalks offer several interesting lectures. At 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 24 for this virtual event, Annemarie Anderson, Simone Delerme, and Kelly Spivey present the Summer Avenue Oral History Project. Summer Avenue, a six-mile section of US Highway 70, one of the first paved, signed highways in the US, has been known by a number of names over the years -- the Broadway of America, Bristol Highway, and most recently, Nations Highway. But for the market owners, restaurateurs, and retail owners in this oral history collection, Memphis is simply home.

Misophonia is a disorder of decreased tolerance to specific sounds or their associated stimuli that has been characterized using different language and methodologies. The absence of a common understanding or foundational definition of misophonia hinders progress in research to understand the disorder and develop effective treatments for individuals suffering from misophonia. From June 2020 through January 2021, the authors conducted a study to determine whether a committee of experts with diverse expertise related to misophonia could develop a consensus definition of misophonia. An expert committee used a modified Delphi method to evaluate candidate definitional statements that were identified through a …

Motives For Repression Of Chinese Ethnic Minorities: A Comparative Case Study Of Xinjiang And Tibet, Haley Grizzell Mar 2022

Motives For Repression Of Chinese Ethnic Minorities: A Comparative Case Study Of Xinjiang And Tibet, Haley Grizzell

Undergraduate Honors Theses

While Xinjiang suffers genocide and Tibet has experienced human rights abuses for years from the Communist Party of China (CPC), government abuses in Xinjiang are far more severe, even though the regions represent similar (low) levels of separatist, terrorist violence. To understand this variation in the CPC’s treatment of its western ethnic minorities, I theorize that the actions in Xinjiang must be tied to regime survival, which in China is tied to performance. The CPC’s performance has been lacking in providing power for its urban population, which makes up its most important base of legitimacy. According to my theory, educated, …

Behavioral And Physiological Effects Of Heavy Metals On Fish: A Review And Preliminary Results, Diana V. Morales Mar 2022

Behavioral And Physiological Effects Of Heavy Metals On Fish: A Review And Preliminary Results, Diana V. Morales

Theses and Dissertations

Pollution, specifically heavy metal pollution, in various bodies of water has been a significant issue for decades. Research has been conducted on heavy metals and their effects on the environment, larger fish species, and humans since the 1970s (Skidmore, 1964; Adeniyi et al., 2007; Adeosun et al., 2015; Bawuro et al., 2018). It is known that zinc is a neurotoxin in some species and causes harm to the environment. It is also known that it causes harm to people if it is ingested or if they are exposed to it for long periods of time (Mahurpawar, 2015; Mizuno and Kawahara, …

Individuals eligible for lung cancer screening (LCS) are at risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) due to smoking history. Coronary artery calcifications (CAC), a common incidental finding on low-dose CT (LDCT) for LCS, is a predictor of cardiovascular events. Despite findings of high ASCVD risk and CAC, a substantial proportion of LCS patients are not prescribed primary preventive statin therapy for ASCVD. We assessed the frequency of statin prescription in LCS patients with moderate levels of CAC. Among 259 individuals with moderate CAC, 95% had ASCVD risk ≥ 7.5%. Despite this, 27% of patients were statin-free prior to LDCT and …

In August 2017, Hurricane Harvey was one of the most destructive storms to make landfall in the Houston area, causing loss of life and property. Temporal and spatial changes in the depth of floodwater and the extent of inundation form an essential part of flood studies. This work estimates the flood extent and depth from LiDAR DEM (light detection and ranging digital elevation model) using data from the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)–Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR) and satellite sensor—Sentinel-1. The flood extent showed a decrease between 29–30 August and 5 September 2017. The flood depths estimated using the …

Intervention Effects Of A Cognitive Behavioral Skills Building Program On Newly Licensed Registered Nurses, Marlene Sampson Mar 2022

Intervention Effects Of A Cognitive Behavioral Skills Building Program On Newly Licensed Registered Nurses, Marlene Sampson

Dissertations

The well-being of healthcare clinicians is considered a national crisis. Healthcare clinicians, including nurses, have higher rates of substance abuse, depression and suicide than the national average. Depression and poor health in nurses are linked to medical errors and patient dissatisfaction. Ninety-one percent of NLRNs report high stress levels resulting in stress-related illness, absenteeism and burnout. In 2017, the National Academy of Medicine launched the Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-being to develop evidence-based solutions to reduce this public health epidemic. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)-based skills building program entitled …

Beyond Misinformation: Educating Graduate Students About The Mischaracterization And Misappropriation Of Research, Winn W. Wasson

Librarian Publications

The contemporary information landscape has produced numerous incidents of researchers having their research misappropriated or mischaracterized—or worse, being subjected to intimidation and harassment—by individuals or groups who seek to cherry-pick evidence in support of ideological agendas or who wish to suppress evidence that counters those same agendas. While the COVID-19 pandemic has elevated these tactics in their frequency, visibility, and intensity, this phenomenon is by no means unique to the pandemic. Medievalists and Classicists have seen their research become politicized by white supremacists, and historians and archaeologists of ancient India have had to push back against religious nationalist narratives that …

Effects Of Career And Technical Education On The Academic Success Of Students In Rural Schools, William C. White Iii

College of Education

The problem investigated in this study is the poor academic success of rural students measured by graduation and low college or career readiness post-graduation. Career and Technical Education has evolved from an alternative for high school graduating seniors to a plan of action for students enrolled in public schools across the nation to build work skills prior to leaving high school. The study addresses two objectives of Plan 2020: high school graduation and preparation of students entering college or the workforce. This study used a quantitative research methodology that entailed a causal-comparative study design. Using the two-proportion z-test, the results …

Deploying Digitalisation And Artificial Intelligence In Sustainable Development Research, Peter Yang

Faculty Scholarship

Many industrialised countries have benefited from the advent of twenty-first century technologies, especially automation, that have fundamentally changed manufacturing and industrial production processes. The next step in the evolution of automation is the development of artificial intelligence (AI), i.e. intelligence which is demonstrated by machines and systems, which cannot only perform tasks but also work synergistically with humans and nature. Intelligent systems that can see, analyse situations and respond sensitively to real-time cues, from human gestures and facial expressions to pedestrians crossing a busy street, will reshape transportation, precision agriculture, biodiversity conservation, environmental modelling, public health, construction and manufacturing, as …
