Promoting Equitable Early Childhood School Readiness Through Prevention And Advocacy In A Rural Community, Teri Kimberling

Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation

Goal Statement

The goal of this Social Change Portfolio is to promote healthier developmental outcomes for young children in our rural community by increasing access to early childhood readiness supports that prevent social-emotional and behavioral difficulties in kindergarten.

Significant Findings

Early childhood school readiness is a significant public health and mental health concern in the rural coastal community of Lincoln County, Oregon. A large number of children enter kindergarten without any school readiness, whether it was in a formal preschool or just done at home. This can be due to many factors, including socioeconomic disparities, such as high poverty rates, …

Assessment Of Parental Knowledge And Anxiety Surrounding The Informed Consent Discussion For Neonatal Cardiac Interventions, Kristal Mancuso Hock

ETDs from 2020-2029

The purpose of this dissertation was to explore the complexities of the informed consent (IC) process in the context of neonatal cardiac interventions, with a focus on parental knowledge and anxiety during decision-making. Across three manuscripts, this work examined conceptual dimensions, feasibility, and acceptability of a new prenatal treatment (palliative care (PC) support sessions), and the effect sizes of this new treatment on parental knowledge and anxiety levels surrounding the IC discussion for neonatal cardiac palliations. The first manuscript employed dimensional analysis to conduct a concept analysis of IC in surgical care. The review of 27 publications revealed three distinct …

The Multidimensional Online Civic Engagement For Youth (Moce-Y) Scale: Development And Validation, Yue Ni, G. John Geldhof, Kelly D. Chandler, Richard A. Settersten Jr

Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Online civic engagement among young people may represent a form of positive youthdevelopment in digital spaces. However, its impacts on youth’s well-being remain unclear, partly due to a lack of validated measures that capture the unique features of the internetand incorporate youth voices. To address this gap, we developed and validated a scale ofmultidimensional online civic engagement for youth aged 15 to 25 years (MOCE-Y) using anexploratory sequential mixed-methods approach. Qualitative interviews with 12 youth sup-ported the multidimensional structure derived from literature, from which we developed aninitial 40-item scale. Exploratory (N ¼ 159) and confirmatory (N ¼ 244) factor analyses withtwo …

Community Synchrony In Aquatic Macroinvertebrates Is Unrelated To Environmental Variability But Differs Among Functional Feeding Groups, Anthony J. Pignatelli, Tad Dallas Jan 2026

Community Synchrony In Aquatic Macroinvertebrates Is Unrelated To Environmental Variability But Differs Among Functional Feeding Groups, Anthony J. Pignatelli, Tad Dallas

Faculty Publications

Environments are becoming increasingly more variable, as a function of climate change. As this occurs, species may be exposed to conditions outside their preferred range. Such variability in the environment can influence community abundance as individual species respond either similarly (synchronous dynamics) or differently (asynchronous dynamics) to each other. These fluctuations in abundances are important for understanding the impact of environmental variability on species temporal fluctuations in aquatic macroinvertebrates. This group of organisms is species-rich and highly sensitive to environmental fluctuations. We analyzed 18 stream macroinvertebrate communities sampled by the National Ecological Observatory Network between 2014 and2022 to understand how …

Heatwaves Compounded With Flflooding In Tampa Bay: Intensity, Frequency, And Risks, Lucas Nofsinger, Ogugua Onochie, Sidharth Sudheer, Alejandra R. Enriquez

Making Waves REU

Rising coastal temperatures and intensity of heatwaves increasing the extremity of flooding events pose growing threats to the health and resilience of coastal communities. Building on recent global compound hazard assessments (Zhou et al., 2024), this study provides a high-resolution analysis of heatwave trends across the Tampa Bay area from 1993 to 2026 using land surface temperatures (LST). To evaluate compound hazards, flood maps were sourced for comparison. LST’s were derived from 30 m Landsat imagery to characterize temperature increases in the region. Utilizing LST climatology and land cover maps, spatial and temporal warming trends were investigated. Areas of rapid …

A Robust Convnext-Based Framework For Efficient, Generalizable, And Explainable Brain Tumor Classification On Mri, Kirti Pant, Pijush Kanti Dutta Pramanik, Zhongming Zhao

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Accurate and dependable brain tumor classification from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is essential for clinical decision support, yet remains challenging due to inter-dataset variability, heterogeneous tumor appearances, and limited generalization of many deep learning models. Existing studies often rely on single-dataset evaluation, insufficient statistical validation, or lack interpretability, which restricts their clinical reliability and real-world deployment.

Methods: This study proposes a robust brain tumor classification framework based on the ConvNeXt Base architecture. The model is evaluated across three independent MRI datasets comprising four classes-glioma, meningioma, pituitary tumor, and no tumor. Performance is assessed using class-wise and aggregate metrics, including …

Higher Learning Research Communications

Learning English as a second language (ESL) can be challenging for students, so it is essential to keep them motivated. One way to motivate students is through electronic programs (e-programs) that can enhance their motivation to learn. This research examined student learning motivation through the lens of the self-determination theory (SDT), with 39 preparatory-year students participating and learning in a blended context. Nine students were interviewed regarding their motivation to learn English using the electronic program, and both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used to examine participants’ motivation to learn English in that context. The quantitative results indicated that …

Background/Objectives: In recent years, MRI-based diffusion-weighted tractography techniques have uncovered additional white matter pathways that have significant roles in language processing and production. In this review, we aim to outline the major language centers of the brain and major language pathways along with association tracts that serve dual roles in both the language and limbic systems. According to the current dual-stream model of language processing, the brain's language network is organized into a dorsal stream, responsible for mapping sound to articulation, and a ventral stream, which maps sound to meaning.

Neuroendocrine prostate cancer (NEPC) is a highly aggressive and lethal subtype of prostate cancer (PCa) that often emerges in response to androgen receptor pathway inhibitors (ARPIs), which are widely used in treating metastatic castration-resistant and hormone-sensitive prostate cancer. The incidence of NEPC is increasing, yet effective therapeutic strategies remain limited due to an incomplete understanding of its molecular drivers. Through transcriptomic analyses of human prostate tumor samples, we identified the histone lysine demethylase KDM4A as uniquely overexpressed in human and mouse NEPC compared to prostate adenocarcinoma. Functional validation demonstrated that KDM4A is a key regulator of NEPC progression and a …

Adaptive Multi-Agent Intelligence: A Dynamic Data Management System For Enhanced Data Quality And Reconciliation, Anthony Taeyang Vigil

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Organizations struggle with data quality problems that cost them millions of dollars annually. Manual data cleanup and standardizing, also known as reconciliation, can take skilled analysts days to complete and can still contain human errors. This dissertation addresses this challenge by developing and validating the Origin Data Management System, which automates processes that traditionally require days of manual work. The system achieved up to 100% accuracy in standardizing vendor names and identifying CEO information across real-world test datasets from Jefferson County Public Schools, Forbes, and Fortune Magazines. Processing time dropped from days to minutes—a 96-fold improvement over manual methods. These …
