Unfit For Human Consumption: A Bone To Pick With Boneless Wings, H. Beau Baez Jan 2026

Unfit For Human Consumption: A Bone To Pick With Boneless Wings, H. Beau Baez

Akron Law Review

This article examines defective food laws after the Ohio Supreme Court held that “boneless” in boneless chicken wings does not mean “without bones.” The result in this case is a man with permanent injuries was precluded from recovering damages after eating a menu item described as “boneless.”

The article begins by discussing the case, Berkheimer v. REKM, and the rationale used by the court for allowing summary judgment against the plaintiff.  Next, the article examines legal history, beginning with 13th century unwholesome food statutes.  This section demonstrates that the law for unwholesome food, until the 20th century, …

Comparing Educational Pathways For Denturists To Become Maxillofacial Prosthetic Specialists In The Us And The Uk, Minseok Kim

Oral Health

Abstract

In the absence of formal training, licensure, and professionalism, this scientific literature review will seek to include denturists in the American maxillofacial prosthetics industry. Denturists are oral health professionals who perform oral examination, design, manufacture, and place removable oral prostheses. In other regions of the world, they are also known as clinical dental technologists and dental prosthetists. This practice is not widespread in the US. The review can also be assessed on the model mediated by PRISMA, which is concentrated on the experiences of international education in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, where the concentration further revolves around …

Predictors Of Success In An Online Undergraduate Core Course In Finance Jan 2026

Predictors Of Success In An Online Undergraduate Core Course In Finance

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

Because finance is a technically oriented business subject where competence in math and accounting plays a role in student success, we posit that technical knowledge, as proxied by math and accounting pre-tests, may predict success in an online undergraduate finance course. Since little or no lecture support is generally offered while taking an online course, students that struggle with math or accounting may have a greater challenge with the online format for a finance course. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the key determinants of success in an online core course in finance.

Tethered Spinal Cord And Urinary Tract Complications In Trisomy 18, Michael A. Phillipi, Ladawna Gievers, Jesse L. Winer, Casey Seideman, Amanda J.H. Kim

Journal of Pediatric Genetics

Background: Trisomy 18 is an aneuploidy that has historically been associated with early mortality However, recently parents of children with complex conditions are more often pursuing life-prolonging medical interventions. The increasing use of neonatal intensive care has led to longer lifespans in infants affected by trisomy 18, allowing for later complications to emerge. While many comorbidities have been reported in the literature, tethered cord has rarely been reported in this population. This study examines the potential relationship between trisomy 18, tethered spinal cord, and related urinary tract complications. Methods: A retrospective chart review of subjects admitted to a single quaternary …

Lived Experiences Of Law Enforcement Officers Assigned To Co-Response Teams Responding To Mental Health Crises, Roxanne Miller Jan 2026

Lived Experiences Of Law Enforcement Officers Assigned To Co-Response Teams Responding To Mental Health Crises, Roxanne Miller

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Law enforcement officers are increasingly called upon to respond to mental health crises, yet their experiences as members of co-response teams (CRTs) remain underexplored. This study was conducted to address that gap by examining the lived experiences of officers assigned to CRTs that pair specially trained officers with mental health clinicians to respond jointly to calls involving individuals in crisis. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to describe how officers experience CRT work and how it shapes their perceptions, practices, and professional identity. The study was guided by Lazarus and Folkman’s transactional theory of stress, appraisal, and coping, …

Investigating Sex Offenders’ Experience Of Being Registered As A Sex Offender, Stacey Mitchell-Swingle Jan 2026

Investigating Sex Offenders’ Experience Of Being Registered As A Sex Offender, Stacey Mitchell-Swingle

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In society, sex offenders are subject to unforeseen consequences of the sex offender registry. The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate how the sex offender registry contributes to the mental distress of registered sex offenders and their concerns about recidivism. This study addressed a gap in understanding the sex offender registry experiences from the offender’s perspective. The research question addressed how adult male registrants describe their experiences of mental distress associated with registration and how they perceive registration as shaping their risk of reoffending. The theoretical framework was John Braithwaite’s reintegrative shaming theory, with a specific focus on …

INTRODUCTION: The impact of protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) on patients hospitalized for conventional pacemaker implantation remains poorly understood.

METHODS: We utilized the 2020 U.S. National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database to evaluate the impact of PEM on the in-hospital outcomes of patients who underwent conventional pacemaker implantation. Patients aged 18 and older were identified by ICD-10 CM and PCS codes. Multivariable survey logistic and linear regression analyses were employed to examine in-hospital outcomes, including in-patient mortality, system-based outcomes, and post-procedural complications.

RESULTS: A total of 108 020 patients were identified with 4315 (3.99%) diagnosed with PEM. The mean age of the cohort …

Strengthening The Use Of Sexual And Reproductive Health And Rights Evidence In Refugee And Humanitarian Settings, Baobab Research Programme Consortium

Humanitarian Task Force

This guide offers practical, experience-based direction for strengthening the uptake of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) evidence in refugee and humanitarian settings. Drawing on five years of Baobab’s work in Uganda and Ethiopia, it outlines principles for effective research uptake, including embedded partnerships, rigorous locally owned methods, stakeholder engagement, capacity development, adaptive communication, and continuous learning. The guide illustrates how these approaches enabled pioneering evidence generation—such as the first Humanitarian Violence Against Children Survey (VACS)—and informed service innovations, national policy reforms, and cross-country learning. It provides a replicable framework for translating SRHR research into action and system level …

Combined Glycoprotein Mutations In Rabies Virus Promote Astrocyte Tropism And Protective Cns Immunity In Mice, Mirjam Anna Rita Bertoune, Corinna Kolbe, Ann-Cathrin Werner, Maren Steinmetz, Bernhard Dietzschold, Eberhard Weihe

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

Rabies virus (RABV) causes fatal encephalitis once it invades the central nervous system (CNS), and treatment options are extremely limited at this stage. We investigated the recombinant RABV variants SPBN, SPBNGA (glycoprotein substitution R333E), SPBNGAK (R333E plus N194K), SPBNGAS (R333E plus N194S), and TriGAS (three copies of the R333E/N194S glycoprotein). We evaluated their cellular tropism and immune activation in an intracerebral mouse infection model using immunohistochemistry and confocal immunofluorescence. SPBNGAK (R333E/N194K) resulted in mixed neuronal and astrocytic infection and lethal disease. In contrast, the R333E/N194S mutations in the GAS variants were associated with reduced neuronal infection and apparent astrocyte-restricted infection …

Faculty Publications

Research Question/Issue

Public and academic debates typically portray US CEOs as exceptionally well paid. Yet, evidence on the existence and magnitude of a US CEO pay premium is mixed and dated. This study uses an expanded, longitudinal dataset to identify whether such a pay premium exists and explores potential differences across countries, time, and governance and institutional contexts.

Research Findings/Insights

Using a dataset of over 42,000 firm-year observations from 34 countries during 2001–2018, we document a persistent but heterogeneous US CEO pay premium. Compared with non-US peers, US CEOs receive 23% more total pay and 20% more equity-based compensation, on …

Partial Versus Full Revision In Cementless Single-Stage Exchange For Hip Periprosthetic Joint Infection: A Multicenter Comparative Study With 10-Year Survivorship Analysis, Wenbo Mu, Atthakorn Jarusriwanna, Boyong Xu, Scot A. Brown, Xiaogang Zhang, Alexander Dawes, Javad Parvizi Md, Li Cao

Rothman Institute Papers

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is one of the most challenging complications following total hip arthroplasty (THA). Traditional management typically involves full revision to ensure comprehensive infection eradication. However, for patients with well-fixed implants, partial revision in a single-stage cementless approach may provide a viable alternative, potentially preserving bone stock and reducing operative time. The relative efficacy of this approach compared with full revision remains to be fully explored. This multicenter study aims to determine whether partial revision in cementless single-stage exchange surgery offers comparable infection control outcomes to full revision for select patients with well-fixed implants.

METHODS: We conducted …
