Upper Hemisternotomy Vs. Full Sternotomy For Hemiarch And Proximal Aortic Replacement, Jeffrey A. Zucker, Vishal N. Shah, Joshua R. Chen, Christopher Pritting, Colin King, Jacqueline Mcgee, Megary Mccoy, Konstadinos A. Plestis

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

Introduction: Hemiarch replacement with proximal aortic replacement is seldom performed via upper hemisternotomy (UHS). We report our surgical technique and postoperative outcomes in 11 patients who underwent UHS for hemiarch and proximal aortic replacement, compared with 15 patients who underwent the procedure via full sternotomy (FS).

Methods: A UHS was performed at the right third or fourth intercostal space. Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) was established via the distal ascending aorta or right axillary artery and right common femoral vein. After aortic cross-clamping (ACC), the heart was arrested with single-dose antegrade crystalloid cardioplegia. After proximal aortic replacement, hypothermic circulatory arrest (HCA) between …

Assessing The Influence Of Teachers’ Teaching Experience And Educational Qualification On The Use Of Oral Tradition In Teaching Igbo Language In Secondary Schools In South-East Nigeria, Princess Ngozi Ndibe Jan 2026

Assessing The Influence Of Teachers’ Teaching Experience And Educational Qualification On The Use Of Oral Tradition In Teaching Igbo Language In Secondary Schools In South-East Nigeria, Princess Ngozi Ndibe

Journal of Language, Literature, and Arts

The declining use of indigenous languages among younger generations, combined with the increasing reliance on conventional textbook-based instructional approaches, has raised concerns regarding the preservation of the Igbo language and its cultural heritage. These concerns prompted an empirical investigation into the influence of teacher-related factors on the effective integration of oral tradition in Igbo language instruction. This study employed a descriptive survey design involving public secondary school Igbo language teachers, from whom 500 respondents were selected through multistage sampling. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire, with reliability established through Cronbach’s alpha. Questionnaire administration was conducted with official authorization. Data …

High-Throughput Proteomic Profiling To Evaluate Differentiation Syndrome With Menin Inhibition, Miriam B Garcia, Bofei Wang, Irtiza Sheikh, Georgina El Hajjar, David Mccall, Cesar Nunez, Amber Gibson, Philip L Lorenzi, Ghayas C Issa, Branko Cuglievan, Hussein A Abbas

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

High-throughput proteomic profiling provides a comprehensive analysis of systemic cancer effects and tumor microenvironment interactions. Characterizing soluble proteins driving inflammation in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) offers insight into inflammatory diseases like differentiation syndrome (DS) related to AML therapies like menin inhibitors. We present our application of NUcleic acid-Linked Immuno-Sandwich Assay (NULISA), a novel technology leveraging next-generation sequencing (NGS) for high-throughput, ultra-sensitive characterization of secreted inflammatory proteins in plasma or serum. Here we report its use to identify dynamic soluble protein changes during treatment and at the time of suspected DS in pediatric AML patients treated with the menin inhibitor revumenib …

Beyond Bile Acids Synthesis: Metabolomics Profiling Highlights Extensive Metabolic Dysregulation And Treatment Response In Ctx, Monte A Del Monte, Jennifer Hanson, Penelope E Bonnen Jan 2026

Beyond Bile Acids Synthesis: Metabolomics Profiling Highlights Extensive Metabolic Dysregulation And Treatment Response In Ctx, Monte A Del Monte, Jennifer Hanson, Penelope E Bonnen

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background: Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX) is an inherited metabolic disorder caused by variants in CYP27A1 leading to loss of sterol-27-hydroxylase activity. Sterol-27-hydroxylase generates two classes of bioactive signaling molecules: bile acids and oxysterols. The broader metabolic consequences resulting from perturbations in bile acid and oxysterol signaling and their reversibility with FDA-approved treatment chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA), are not fully described.

Methods: To establish a comprehensive map of metabolic consequences of CTX, we performed large-scale, untargeted plasma metabolomics in a single subject with CTX, both before and after 6 months of CDCA therapy, and compared results with a reference cohort of over 1100 …

Functional Genomic Analysis Of Non-Canonical Dna Regulatory Elements Of The Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor, Shayan Shahriar, Tajhal D Patel, Manjula Nakka, Sandra L Grimm, Cristian Coarfa, Daniel A Gorelick Jan 2026

Functional Genomic Analysis Of Non-Canonical Dna Regulatory Elements Of The Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor, Shayan Shahriar, Tajhal D Patel, Manjula Nakka, Sandra L Grimm, Cristian Coarfa, Daniel A Gorelick

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is a ligand-dependent transcription factor activated by environmental toxicants like halogenated and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which then binds to DNA and regulates gene expression. AHR is implicated in numerous physiological processes, including liver and immune function, cell cycle control, oncogenesis, and metabolism. Traditionally, AHR binds a consensus DNA sequence (GCGTG), the xenobiotic response element (XRE), recruits coregulators, and modulates gene expression. Yet, recent evidence suggests AHR can also regulate gene expression via a non-consensus sequence (GGGA), termed the non-consensus XRE (NC-XRE). The prevalence and functional significance of NC-XRE motifs in the genome have remained unclear. …

Konstruksi The Other Dan Representasi Anti-Semit Dalam Stereotip Yahudi Fagin, Hardina Hardina, Muarifuddin Muarif, Rahmawati Azi

Journal of Language, Literature, and Arts

This article employs Stuart Hall’s (1997) theory of representation to analyze the construction of The Other in the portrayal of Fagin as a Jewish character in Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist. The study focuses on how practices of representation, stereotyping, and anti-Semitic racism are constructed through language and narrative structure. The main aim is to identify forms of anti-Semitic representation and the ideological mechanisms that shape Jewish identity as an outsider (The Other). The research uses a qualitative descriptive method with a literary and cultural studies approach, analyzing text, characters, and narrative based on concepts of representation, stereotyping, encoding-decoding, and …

The Correlation Between The Frequency Of Using Grammarly And The Accuracy Of Students’ Thesis Writing, Tri Herawati, Suharyadi Suharyadi, Harits Masduqi

Journal of Language, Literature, and Arts

Grammar-checking tools have gained popularity as a means of addressing writing difficulties and improving students’ writing quality, particularly grammatical accuracy. Therefore, it is important to examine the relationship between the frequency of Grammarly use and the accuracy of students’ thesis writing to understand the potential benefits and limitations of Grammarly as a writing tool in academic contexts. This study aimed to investigate whether a correlation exists between these two variables. A quantitative approach with correlational research design was employed. The participants were 63 English Language Education students from Universitas Negeri Malang who were enrolled in the 2017, 2018, and 2019 …

Solitary Interiority In Hong Kong Public Spaces, Xia Bi, Kin Wai Michael Siu, Rosina Yuan Jan 2026

Solitary Interiority In Hong Kong Public Spaces, Xia Bi, Kin Wai Michael Siu, Rosina Yuan

Interiority

Hong Kong's dense urban environment, constrained housing, and relentless tempo of everyday life create a context in which solitude is both scarce and valued. This article develops the concept of solitary interiority to capture how moments of solitude in public space generate interiority as a relational condition through the interplay of bodies, atmospheres, and cultural norms. Drawing on ethnographic interviews and multisensory experiential reflection, the article demonstrates how solitary interiority arises from the blurring of boundaries between the domestic and the urban, the self and others, and the private and the public. Individuals extend certain home-like qualities into public spaces, …

Neuroscience And Humanism In Norman Foster's Architecture, Francisco Javier Lahuerta Ferris, Bartolomé Serra Soriano Jan 2026

Neuroscience And Humanism In Norman Foster's Architecture, Francisco Javier Lahuerta Ferris, Bartolomé Serra Soriano

Interiority

The work of Norman Foster, often labelled as 'high-tech,' is renowned for its structural expressionism and technological rationalism. However, it is grounded in the conception of a unified whole in which science, technology, and the humanities are inseparable facets that shape both human beings and the spaces they design and inhabit. This article analyses the correlations between the new paradigms established by neuroscience and the design principles of Foster's architecture: the integral conception of reality, optimisation, and energy balance (homeostasis) as survival factors guiding decisions, and the role of perception, emotions, and feelings in the creation and evaluation of architectural …

Optic Neuritis And Neuroretinitis In Cat-Scratch Disease: An Updated Systematic Review, Sara Urdiales-Sánchez, José-Ramiro González-Montaña, Pilar Alonso-Alonso, Javier Urdiales-Urdiales Jan 2026

Optic Neuritis And Neuroretinitis In Cat-Scratch Disease: An Updated Systematic Review, Sara Urdiales-Sánchez, José-Ramiro González-Montaña, Pilar Alonso-Alonso, Javier Urdiales-Urdiales

Journal of Pediatric Neurology

This study provides a systematic review of optic neuritis and neuroretinitis associated with cat scratch disease (CSD) caused by Bartonella henselae. CSD, commonly transmitted through cat scratches or bites, can lead to visual complications, particularly in children, who are more frequently exposed to cats. A comprehensive literature search identified 10 relevant studies from an initial pool of 521 articles. Typical CSD manifests with regional lymphadenopathy, but severe complications like hepatosplenomegaly and encephalitis can occur, especially in younger patients. Atypical presentations, such as neuroretinitis, often begin as optic neuritis with papillary edema, progressing to a macular star pattern. Pediatric patients may …
