Nci-Designated Cancer Centers' Policies And Practices With Regard To Alcohol And Cancer: A Call To Lead, Ernest T Hawk, Stephanie L Martch, Meghan Si, Sanjay Shete

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Alcohol, a known carcinogen since 1988, increases risk of cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, liver, breast, and colorectum. More than one half of US adults consume alcohol whereas about two thirds are unsure whether or unaware that alcohol intake is linked to cancer risk.

Methods: Our objective was to survey awareness, beliefs, intentions, policies, practices, and goals/perceived responsibilities related to establishing/promoting actions to reduce alcohol-related cancer risks from leaders of 72 NCI-Designated Cancer Centers.

Results: Sixty-one percent responded. Forty-three percent either believed in or were uncertain about alcohol's purported health benefits. Nevertheless, 86% considered it part of …

Neuromodulation In Olfactory Networks: Inferring Circuit Motifs And Predicting Behavioral Outcomes From Neural Response Changes, Yelyzaveta Bessonova Feb 2026

Neuromodulation In Olfactory Networks: Inferring Circuit Motifs And Predicting Behavioral Outcomes From Neural Response Changes, Yelyzaveta Bessonova

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Many organisms rely on olfaction to navigate their environment in response to surrounding chemical cues. Within the olfactory system, first, external signals are transduced into neural activity patterns that drive a diverse array of behavioral responses. However, sensory processing alone does not fully account for this variability. Fluctuations in neuromodulator levels are equally critical in shaping how olfactory information is encoded and translated into behavior. The goal of this dissertation is to investigate how changes in the neurochemistry within the olfactory circuit influence neural signaling and, ultimately, behavioral responses. To achieve this, I investigated how three neuromodulators: serotonin, dopamine, and …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) represents a highly prevalent, costly, and often untreated condition in the United States. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) represents a common comorbidity with AUD which worsens outcomes and decreases functional outcomes. Suvorexant (SUV) shows clear promise as a novel therapeutic candidate to treat AUD and PTSD.

Methods: This study features a promising compound (i.e., suvorexant), the application of a well-established human laboratory paradigm (i.e., alcohol cue reactivity), and a novel early efficacy laboratory model (i.e., practice quit attempt) to provide a cost/time-efficient evaluation of safety and initial efficacy of suvorexant for AUD with comorbid PTSD. Additionally, …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Purpose: Sexual and gender minority people (SGM) experience multiple cancer-related disparities, including higher rates of cancer risk factors, lower rates of cancer screening, higher lifetime risk of cancer, and unmet needs throughout cancer survivorship. Although many national organizations, including the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the American Cancer Society (ACS), have emphasized the need for more cancer research among SGM communities, currently no consensus exists about the highest research priorities, promising research models, or mechanisms to support collaboration between geographically dispersed scientific teams.

Methods: To address this gap, we convened a three-day conference to focus on the "Science of Cancer …

Background: Stroke is a sexually dimorphic disease, with different risk factors, incidence, outcomes, and treatment responses in men and women. While sex differences have been documented in preclinical studies, these findings often come from single-site studies with small sample sizes and require validation across diverse research settings.

Methods: We used data from the SPAN (Stroke Preclinical Assessment Network), a randomized, placebo-controlled, blinded, multilaboratory trial, to determine if sex differences in neurological outcomes are present in preclinical stroke models. We analyzed data from 665 stroke animals treated with saline, including young mice, diet-induced obese mice, aging mice, young rats, and spontaneously …

Epidemiology Of Healthcare-Associated Ventriculitis And Meningitis (Hcavm) And Community-Acquired Meningitis/Encephalitis And Evaluation Of An Off-Label Pcr Panel For Hcavm Diagnosis, Jaime Nassur, Katarina Schnell, Christine Dolon, Laura Walters, Devin Weber, Matthew Pettengill

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Healthcare-associated ventriculitis and meningitis (HCAVM) is associated with high morbidity and mortality, but rapid diagnostic tests intended to cover microorganisms that typically cause HCAVM are not commercially available. We sought to evaluate the etiology of HCAVM compared to community-acquired meningitis/encephalitis (CAME) at our healthcare system, and to study the utility of repurposing a multiplex molecular panel intended for positive blood cultures for HCAVM cases. Our epidemiologic review demonstrated that HCAVM cases were primarily caused by bacteria and fungi also associated with bloodstream infections, in contrast with CAME cases, which were primarily caused by herpesviruses and Cryptococcus. Eighty-two cerebrospinal fluid …

Patient-Specific Computational Flow Simulation Reveals Adverse Hemodynamic Factors Associated With Occlusion Of Directional Branches After Fenestrated-Branched Endovascular Aneurysm Repair, Kenneth Tran, Jesse Chait, Emmanuel Tenorio, Weiguang Yang, Alison Marsden, Bernardo Mendes, Jason T Lee, Gustavo S Oderich

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background: Fenestrated and branched endovascular aneurysm repair can be complicated by branch vessel occlusion in the absence of structural stenosis. We hypothesized that computational flow simulation could identify adverse hemodynamic features associated with postfenestrated and branched endovascular aneurysm repair branch occlusion.

Methods: Patients undergoing 4-vessel fenestrated and branched endovascular aneurysm repair for Extent II to IV thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms were retrospectively reviewed. Branches that occluded without identifiable kinking or stenosis on computed tomography were included, along with an equal cohort of anatomy-matched patent controls. Patient-specific pulsatile rigid-wall simulations were performed using SimVascular with individualized geometries and boundary conditions. Abnormal time-averaged …

Victims’ Rights Or The Public’S Right To Know: Rethinking The Boundaries Of The Right Of Publicity In True Crime, Millicent F. Dye Feb 2026

Victims’ Rights Or The Public’S Right To Know: Rethinking The Boundaries Of The Right Of Publicity In True Crime, Millicent F. Dye

Journal of Intellectual Property Law

Advancements in technology and the development of new online platforms have paved the way for true crime to become one of the most popular genres today. While some believe true crime content is akin to news reporting, others have raised ethical concerns and believe that victims’ identities should be protected by a right of publicity.  The key is to find a balance between protecting victims and protecting free speech. This Note explores the right of publicity laws in a select few countries and addresses the shortcomings of the current approaches. This Note asserts that certain true crime content must be …

No Patent Attorney In Their Right Mind: How Jepson Claims Clarify Subject Matter Eligibility Post-Mayo, Jared M. Brown Feb 2026

No Patent Attorney In Their Right Mind: How Jepson Claims Clarify Subject Matter Eligibility Post-Mayo, Jared M. Brown

Journal of Intellectual Property Law

Patent practitioners have gradually shelved Jepson claims for four decades. In those four decades, Supreme Court patent subject matter eligibility jurisprudence has taken a roller-coaster ride from an ancient point-of-novelty approach through the days of Diamond v. Diehr and back to a modernized arguably point-of-novelty-focused approach again in Mayo and Alice. In the absence of congressional action, the Federal Circuit has been left to deal with the aftermath. The inventive landscape—particularly with regard to biotech and software—is shifting fast, and our patent scheme is struggling to keep up.

In the case of software inventions, the Federal Circuit has largely …

Patents In Paradise: The Evolution Of Patent Law In The Cayman Islands, Andrew W. Torrance, Andrew P. Morriss, Lisa C. Friedman

Journal of Intellectual Property Law

This study examines the Cayman Islands’ unique position in the global intellectual property (IP) landscape, contrasting its success as an exporter of financial and legal services with the inherently domestic nature of patent protection. We hypothesize that due to this limitation, the Cayman Islands functions as a strategic, cost-effective jurisdiction for augmenting patent protection initially obtained elsewhere. Our research provides the first comprehensive analysis of Caymanian patents, and through a quantitative examination of patent family data—including filing trends, economic valuation, geographic distribution, and assignee profiles—we find strong empirical evidence to support this thesis.
Our findings reveal a disproportionate presence of …
