Un Extraño En Una Tierra Extraña: A Latino Debater’S Recollections Of The United Kingdom Debate Tour, Richard D. Pineda Feb 2026

Un Extraño En Una Tierra Extraña: A Latino Debater’S Recollections Of The United Kingdom Debate Tour, Richard D. Pineda

Studies in Debate and Oratory

Through the lens of a first-time participant of the Committee on International Discussion and Debate Tour of the United Kingdom and Portugal in 1997, this autoethnography examines the values of the debate tour experience from my unique standpoint. Having been in competitive speech and debate for eight years at that point – from high school through college – the debate tour challenged many of my assumptions about the activity and my perspective on speech and debate as an experiential learning platform. Specifically, I examine the experience of being on the tour through the identity lens of a Latino debater and …

International Students In Early American Forensics: Notes On The History Of The U.S.-Japan Forensics Relationship During The Late 19th And Early 20th Centuries, Satoru Aonuma, Junya Morooka, Tomohiro Kanke Feb 2026

International Students In Early American Forensics: Notes On The History Of The U.S.-Japan Forensics Relationship During The Late 19th And Early 20th Centuries, Satoru Aonuma, Junya Morooka, Tomohiro Kanke

Studies in Debate and Oratory

Ending 215 years of “national seclusion,” in 1854, Japan ratified the Treaty of Amity and Commerce with the United States and opened its doors to the rest of the world. Because of this special bilateral relationship, between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, more Japanese began traveling to the U.S. than to any other country. Focusing on young Japanese who went to the U.S. as students and participated in debate and oratorical education during this period, this essay will re-examine the history of the U.S.-Japan relationship in terms of academic debate and oratory. During this period, American …

Temporal Dynamics Of Irrigation Characteristics In South Carolina, Selvalakshmi Selvaraj, Jose O. Payero, Dana B. Turner

Journal of South Carolina Water Resources

Irrigation plays a vital role in stabilizing crop production under climatic variability in the southeastern United States. However, limited long-term empirical evidence exists on how irrigation practices, water sources, and energy demands have evolved in South Carolina. The aim of this study was to examine temporal changes in irrigation characteristics in South Carolina. The analysis utilized two decades (2003–2023) of data from the United States Department of Agriculture – National Agricultural Statistics Service, Irrigation and Water Management Surveys. Results showed a 65% increase in the number of irrigated farms and 260% expansion in irrigated acreage over the twenty-year period. Groundwater …

Figures Of Truth And Justice: Superman & Rock Music, Kelan Vitali Feb 2026

Figures Of Truth And Justice: Superman & Rock Music, Kelan Vitali

CAFE Symposium 2026

The American comic superstar Superman and rock music are completely different forms of media. One performs acts of heroism, and one is performed on stage. Despite their differences, however, both are prominent symbols of inspiration and moral courage.

Tiny But Moral: How "The Adventures Of Little Tiny And The White Mouse" Portrays Children’S Moral And Social Responsibilities In The Civil War Era, Abigail Hagopian Feb 2026

Tiny But Moral: How "The Adventures Of Little Tiny And The White Mouse" Portrays Children’S Moral And Social Responsibilities In The Civil War Era, Abigail Hagopian

CAFE Symposium 2026

Estimated to have been published between 1860 and 1866, The Adventures of Little Tiny and the White Mouse was one of many works for children published by Thomas W. Strong in New York during the American Civil War. The eight-page picture book examines morality and consequences through the misfortunate adventures of a young, yet moral, abnormally small boy named Little Tiny. The youngest of a Broom Maker’s three sons, Tiny’s jealous older brothers sell him to a circus, where he performs alongside a myriad of animals. Missing his father, the animals jump through a series of hoops to help Tiny …

Little Red Riding Hood Rewritten: The Abject In Angela Carter’S “Company Of Wolves”, Samantha Frohring Feb 2026

Little Red Riding Hood Rewritten: The Abject In Angela Carter’S “Company Of Wolves”, Samantha Frohring

CAFE Symposium 2026

This project considers Julia Kristeva's theory of abjection to bring attention to the content within Angela Carter's "The Company of Wolves." This postmodernist rendition of "Little Red Riding Hood" brings attention to feminist topics such as female sexuality and agency. In consideration with Kristeva's theory of abjection, it sheds light on potentially cringeworthy aspects of our bodies and embraces all of the "filth."

Learning For “Serious Employment”: Reinforcing The Social Hierarchy Through Anna Barbauld And John Aikin’S “Things To Be Learned”, Grace Sewell Feb 2026

Learning For “Serious Employment”: Reinforcing The Social Hierarchy Through Anna Barbauld And John Aikin’S “Things To Be Learned”, Grace Sewell

CAFE Symposium 2026

This poster will explore the role of class in Anna Barbauld and John Aikin’s short story “Things To Be Learned.” “Things To Be Learned” was published in the early 19th century and follows a dialogue between mother and daughter as the two discuss the importance of education. It will be argued that through their use of practical diction, lack of interesting visual components, and rigid didactic structure, Barbauld and Aikin aim to promote the maintenance of a social hierarchy based on class. Additionally, an exploration of Anna Barbauld's own thoughts on female education will be included to develop this analysis.

Trouble In Paradise: Paul And Virginia‘S Snapshot Of Limited Enlightenment Progressivism, Henna Neilson Feb 2026

Trouble In Paradise: Paul And Virginia‘S Snapshot Of Limited Enlightenment Progressivism, Henna Neilson

CAFE Symposium 2026

This project analyzes the 1788 children's story "Paul and Virginia" by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre. Written in the pastoral literary genre, it tells the star-crossed love story of Paul and Virginia, childhood friends who live on the French colony Île-de-France (present-day Mauritius). The work exemplifies many highlights of the Enlightenment progressivism, socializing its young readers to criticize the oppressive class systems in Europe. However, the work is limited by the physiocratic view of slavery, which maintained that the slave trade was justified if the enslaved humans were treated "humanely". As a result, Paul and Virginia's slavery plot line includes problematic …

A Godless Greek Mythology: The Desecration Of Greek Mythology For Children, Vanessa Russo Feb 2026

A Godless Greek Mythology: The Desecration Of Greek Mythology For Children, Vanessa Russo

CAFE Symposium 2026

This project analyzes how Nathaniel Hawthorne’s A Wonder Book for Girls and Boys (1851) socialized young American readers by immersing them in a fictitious New England Utopia. While some scholars assert that Wonder Book represents a shift from the didactic nature of nineteenth century children's literature to a style that prioritized entertainment and fostered imaginative play, Hawthorne’s rewriting, or rather his desecration, of six classic Greek Myths certainly had moral undertones that reaffirmed a simplistic Puritan ideal: a pure relationship with the Christian God, women embracing the ideology of the cult of domesticity and staying out of the political sphere, …

Post-Traumatic Stress And Post-Traumatic Growth: A Literary Lens On Trauma, Meaning, And Survival, Audrey Gruben Feb 2026

Post-Traumatic Stress And Post-Traumatic Growth: A Literary Lens On Trauma, Meaning, And Survival, Audrey Gruben

CAFE Symposium 2026

This project examines how literature provides insight into these differing trauma responses by comparing Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl and Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut. Drawing on contemporary psychological frameworks of PTSD and PTG, this analysis argues that psychological distress and growth are not mutually exclusive responses to trauma. Instead, they can coexist along a spectrum shaped by meaning-making, responsibility, avoidance, and engagement with suffering.

Music As Memory And Narrative In American Graffiti And Dazed And Confused, Jacob Tone Feb 2026

Music As Memory And Narrative In American Graffiti And Dazed And Confused, Jacob Tone

CAFE Symposium 2026

This poster explores how George Lucas’s American Graffiti (1973) and Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused (1993) utilize popular music as a narrative tool to define the evolution of American youth culture. By examining the shift from the unified, diegetic radio culture of 1962 to the fragmented, ironic rock pastiche of 1976, the research highlights how Lucas creates a "communal identity" rooted in sincerity while Linklater captures the "disillusionment" of a generation adrift. Ultimately, the study demonstrates that these soundtracks are not mere background elements but serve as vital cultural archives that mediate between history and cinematic memory, shaping the way …

Instilling Patriotism And Prejudice Through Game Of Battles Or Fun For Boys, Gabby Gavaghan Feb 2026

Instilling Patriotism And Prejudice Through Game Of Battles Or Fun For Boys, Gabby Gavaghan

CAFE Symposium 2026

For my Poster Project, I dove into the underlying socialization and indoctrination embedded within a board game from 1899 called "Game of Battles or Fun For Boys." I explored the overwhelming messages of toxic masculinity, the encouragement of enlisting in the military, and the lack of representation of women and African Americans.

Optimizing Workforce Planning To Reduce Outsourcing Of Clinical Roles In Physician Practices, Heidi Sontag Feb 2026

Optimizing Workforce Planning To Reduce Outsourcing Of Clinical Roles In Physician Practices, Heidi Sontag

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The increasing reliance on outsourcing of clinical roles in physician practices has raised concerns regarding continuity of care, staff morale, and organizational control over service quality. While outsourcing may offer temporary financial relief, outsourcing often introduces inefficiencies and declines in patient satisfaction. In this integrative review, I identified workforce planning strategies that reduce outsourcing reliance while enhancing organizational efficiency and patient care outcomes. Using the Johns Hopkins evidence appraisal tools, I analyzed sources published between 2022 and 2025 grounded in resource dependency and Herzberg’s two-factor theories. Five thematic areas emerged: organizational efficiency, patient satisfaction, cost management, staff morale and engagement, …
