The Politics Of Remembering: Reconfiguring The Diorama Of Monas As Augmented Living Document, Suprayitno Suprayitno, Zulfatun Sofiyani, Rahmi Rahmi Feb 2026

The Politics Of Remembering: Reconfiguring The Diorama Of Monas As Augmented Living Document, Suprayitno Suprayitno, Zulfatun Sofiyani, Rahmi Rahmi

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This paper examines the Monas diorama as a central apparatus in Indonesia’s politics of remembering, whose narrative consolidation during the New Order rendered it a state-authored monument of national memory. Drawing on Foucault’s distinction between monument and document, Ferraris’s ontology of documentality, and Perret’s concept of document design as projective epistemology, the study reframes the diorama as a documentary assemblage shaped by inscription, power, and institutionalized forgetting. Through diachronic, synchronic, comparative, and experimental analyses, the paper diagnoses failures across the physical, social, and cognitive dimensions of Monas as a document, revealing narrative authoritarianism, representational rigidity, and the absence of plural …

Cerebral Documents And Algorithmic Sensemaking: Searching For Expressions In Human And Artificial Cognitive Collaborations, Rebekah L. Cowell Feb 2026

Cerebral Documents And Algorithmic Sensemaking: Searching For Expressions In Human And Artificial Cognitive Collaborations, Rebekah L. Cowell

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Generative Artificial Intelligences (AIs) and current advanced large language models (LLMs) are algorithmically designed to generate text-based conversations as conversational agents (CAs), by replicating human language and conversational communication. Pairing human cognition with generative computationally coded cognition. We have never been here before: cerebral and artificial information collaborations and processing producing expressions that may or may not become visible as second-hand/secondary source documents.

Sensemaking or sense(un)making is a unique autonomous human drive cognitively, our information processing is sensemaking in action and expressions and articulations are evidence of the sensemaking cycle. Documentation [expressed or articulated through various mediums] are a product …

Representing The Apparatus In Nineteenth And Twentieth Century Chemical Abstracting Literature, Evan F. Kuehn Feb 2026

Representing The Apparatus In Nineteenth And Twentieth Century Chemical Abstracting Literature, Evan F. Kuehn

Proceedings from the Document Academy

The rise of abstracting services in the 20th century is usually associated with the explosion of original scientific research and its attendant journal literature. The abstract was a tool of information dissemination and access for increasingly expansive and international work. What is often overlooked, however, is the correlation between original research and the technologies that made these advances available. Scientific apparatuses were, however, documented from the beginning, and were also a part of the rise of abstract literature in the 19th and 20th centuries. In this paper I examine the development of abstracts for apparatuses and patents in …

Ai-Generated Content And Cultural Preservation: Toward A Research Agenda, Ryo Shiozaki Feb 2026

Ai-Generated Content And Cultural Preservation: Toward A Research Agenda, Ryo Shiozaki

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This paper maps the theoretical and practical challenges of preserving AI-generated content (AIGC) and proposes a coordinated research agenda rather than policy prescriptions. AIGC reveals the networked, processual nature of cultural production, challenging assumptions about human authorship, singular intentionality, and linear transmission. We identify forces that dissolve boundaries—indistinguishability, distributed intentionality, and recursive training loops—examine legal patchworks across jurisdictions, and consider evolving social perceptions that shape cultural recognition. Extending document theory toward evaluation that gives priority to function and drawing on social ontology, we argue that preservation and recognition are mutually constitutive. We outline a coordinated agenda across three fronts: theoretical …

Ai In The Family Archive: A Collaborative Exploration, Vanessa Reyes, Bhuva Narayan, Annemarie Zijlema, Mary Anne Kennan Feb 2026

Ai In The Family Archive: A Collaborative Exploration, Vanessa Reyes, Bhuva Narayan, Annemarie Zijlema, Mary Anne Kennan

Proceedings from the Document Academy

In this paper, the authors engaged in a structured exploration based on their personal experiences and professional expertise. Together they examine how AI impacts personal and collective memory, preservation efforts, and the ethical concerns around personal archives. As GenAI becomes more accessible to anyone with digital online access, new questions arise about the authenticity, continuity, and transformation of our documents. The questions we asked of ourselves and each other are: How has AI changed our understanding of the authenticity of the documents in our personal and family archives? Do AI-generated narratives and images enhance or distort our family and collective …

Docemes And Document Embeddings, John Kausch Feb 2026

Docemes And Document Embeddings, John Kausch

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This position paper takes Niels’ Lund concept of doceme and applies it to an analysis of a contemporary information retrieval system for Wikipedia, constructed using the Vector Database system “Upstash Vector.” It begins with a theoretical analysis of the capacity for machine learning models to comprehend language, situating its position within that wide debate. It proceeds to discuss issues between the use of the term “semantic” in an data science vs. information science context. Finally, it applies theories from Lund’s doceme and Ron Day’s Documentarity to an analysis of the Upstash Vector dataset located on hugging face, closing with a …

Peri-Intubation Cardiorespiratory Arrest Risk In Pediatric Patients: A Systematic Review, Rohit S. Loomba, Riddhi Patel, Elizabeth Kunnel, Enrique G. Villarreal, Juan S. Farias, Saul Flores Feb 2026

Peri-Intubation Cardiorespiratory Arrest Risk In Pediatric Patients: A Systematic Review, Rohit S. Loomba, Riddhi Patel, Elizabeth Kunnel, Enrique G. Villarreal, Juan S. Farias, Saul Flores

Journal of Pediatric Intensive Care

Background: Endotracheal intubation is associated with an increased risk of cardiorespiratory arrest. Various factors modulate the risk of peri-intubation cardiorespiratory arrest. The primary objective of this study was to determine the risk of peri-intubation cardiorespiratory arrest in pediatric patients in a hospital setting, and the secondary objective was to determine the effect of various factors on the peri-intubation cardiorespiratory arrest risk. Methods: A systematic review was performed to identify eligible manuscripts. Studies were deemed appropriate if they included pediatric patients in a hospital setting not exclusively intubated for an indication of cardiorespiratory arrest. Data was extracted from studies deemed eligible …

Resilient Dispute Resolution Systems For International Energy Conflicts, Guillermo J. Garcia Sanchez Feb 2026

Resilient Dispute Resolution Systems For International Energy Conflicts, Guillermo J. Garcia Sanchez

Seattle University Law Review

Energy-related conflicts are on the rise, spanning diverse issues such as the impacts of rare mineral mining on local communities, the impacts of sanctions on energy investments due to the Russia-Ukraine war, and the impacts of expanded subsidies on the electric vehicle and solar panel industries. Increasingly, companies, communities, and governments are clashing over the challenges of pursuing disparate and sometimes competing energy policies. This Article argues that dispute resolution mechanisms in the energy investment sector must be fundamentally rethought. Traditional semi-adjudicatory models, which focus on winners and losers, fail to accommodate the complex and multifaceted nature of contemporary energy …

Product Nationality And Corporate Identity, Trang (Mae) Nguyen Feb 2026

Product Nationality And Corporate Identity, Trang (Mae) Nguyen

Seattle University Law Review

Global supply chains have long depended on a deceptively technical device: the attribution of a “nationality” to goods. A trade law principle, rules of origin assign products an “economic passport” that governs how they are treated at the border, including what markets they may enter and which tariff rates apply. In recent years, however, product nationality has taken on a new and far more ambitious role. As U.S. trade policy increasingly intersects with national security and human rights policy, policymakers rely on nationality-based measures to police supply chain linkages, curb geopolitical issues, and discipline firms for their links to forced …

A Comparative Study Of Chinese And American Approaches To Shaping International Outer Space Law And Norms, Ariel G. Silverman Feb 2026

A Comparative Study Of Chinese And American Approaches To Shaping International Outer Space Law And Norms, Ariel G. Silverman

Seattle University Law Review

This article explores convergences and divergencies in the United States and PRC’s responses to the stalemate in the United Nations over the future of outer space resource governance. I do so by systematically analyzing these leading space-faring nations’ policy-positions and tactics deployed to shape norms around three substantive areas of outer space resource governance: rights of ownership and scope of utilization of space resources, mechanization of the “benefits sharing” principle, and the rights and responsibilities of the private sector. I theorize that these leading space-faring nations have adopted divergent approaches due to their differing historical relationships with international law and …

A Phenomenological Approach To Spastic Movement Disorders: An International Expert Panel Consensus, Bo Biering-Sørensen, Jörg Wissel, Raymond Rosales, Rajiv Reebye, Jorge Jacinto, Gerard E Francisco, Peter Sanderson, Per Ertzgaard

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background and objectives: Hyperkinetic movement disorders, characterized by complex and overlapping motor patterns, present significant challenges in classification and treatment. The inconsistency in definitions and descriptors complicates both research and clinical communication. This study aims to provide an overview of current terminology and definitions related to spasticity and other hyperkinetic movement disorders associated with central nervous system lesions. We propose a unified terminology and classification system for spastic movement disorders (SMD).

Methods: In this scoping review, definitions of spasticity, dystonia, tremor, chorea, hemiballismus, athetosis, myoclonus, and dyssynergia were reviewed, with emphasis on overlaps and diagnostic challenges among these disorders. The …

Ueof, Nick Truong, Pritam P. Karmokar, William J. Beksi

Event-Based Vision - Archive

UEOF is the first synthetic underwater event-based optical flow dataset derived from physically-based ray-traced RGBD sequences. It was constructed using a modern video-to-event pipeline applied to rendered underwater videos. It consists of realistic event data streams with dense ground-truth flow, depth, and camera motion. The dataset is composed of 12 minutes and 51 seconds of data across 13,714 RGB frames. This results in a total of 4.94 billion events across all scenes. UEOF exhibits a high dynamic range of motion with a mean flow magnitude of 6.1 px and a median of 3.6 px. The motion distribution is heavy-tailed. While …

Quality Improvement Project: Reducing Medication Errors To Improve Patient Safety, Paulina Irish Feb 2026

Quality Improvement Project: Reducing Medication Errors To Improve Patient Safety, Paulina Irish

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Medication administration errors remain a persistent threat to patient safety in emergency department settings, where high acuity, rapid throughput, and workflow interruptions increase vulnerability to preventable adverse events. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice quality improvement project was to increase medication-safety knowledge scores by at least 10% and reduce medication administration error rates by 20% within eight weeks among registered nurses in a freestanding emergency department in South Texas. The project was grounded in Lewin’s Change Theory as the theoretical framework and implemented using the Plan–Do–Study–Act quality improvement model. A quasi-experimental, single-group pretest–posttest design was used with a …

The Neuroprotective Effects Of Alpha-Tocopherol As An Anti-Inflammatory Agent: Mechanistic Insights And Therapeutic Challenges, Megumi H Seese, Yuanzhong Xu Feb 2026

The Neuroprotective Effects Of Alpha-Tocopherol As An Anti-Inflammatory Agent: Mechanistic Insights And Therapeutic Challenges, Megumi H Seese, Yuanzhong Xu

The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine

Vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol, αToc), an antioxidant fat-soluble vitamin that prevents lipid peroxidation and modulates pro-inflammatory cytokine production, is well-known to be critical for neuroprotection. However, the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. Accumulating evidence demonstrates that αToc influences neuroinflammatory processes. Here, we review recent research progress on the effects of αToc on neuroinflammation. Preclinical studies included in this narrative review were identified through PubMed searches using the keywords "alpha-tocopherol AND neuroinflammation or alpha-tocopherol AND brain AND inflammation". While many studies support a neuroprotective role of αToc, the magnitude and direction of its effects vary substantially depending on dosage, route of administration, …
