Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a complex psychiatric disorder that affects the lives of hundreds of millions of individuals around the globe. Even today, researchers debate if morphological alterations in the brain are linked to MDD, likely due to the heterogeneity of this disorder. The application of deep learning tools to neuroimaging data, capable of capturing complex non-linear patterns, has the potential to provide diagnostic and predictive biomarkers for MDD. However, previous attempts to demarcate MDD patients and healthy controls (HC) based on segmented cortical features via linear machine learning approaches have reported low accuracies. In this study, we used …

Purpose: To evaluate the impact of intra- and interfractional motion on dose distribution and clinical outcome in prostate magnetic resonance (MR)-guided adaptive radiotherapy.
Methods: Seventy-six patients were treated with five-fraction stereotactic radiotherapy on a 1.5 T MR linear accelerator. Cine MR images were acquired during treatment and exported to a motion monitoring research package, to generate motion traces in the anterior-posterior (AP), superior-inferior (SI) and left-right (LR) directions. Planned dose distributions were shifted according to motion trace to reconstruct intrafraction motion-blurred dose. Intrafraction motion-blurred doses were deformably registered to fraction one motion-blurred dose to obtain interfraction accumulated dose. The impact …

Neurobiological models of conceptual processing have been limited in spatiotemporal resolution, and uncertainty remains about the causal role of specific regions in concept representation. We utilized intracranial recordings in human neurosurgical patients with epilepsy (n = 19) during a concreteness judgement paradigm of single word reading. Concrete concepts showed greater high-frequency activation across a frontal and ventrotemporal network, while greater activation for abstract words was found in lateral posterior middle temporal cortex. Intercortical communications, measured by high-frequency partial direct coherence, revealed bidirectional frontal and ventral plus lateral temporal interactions. Words occupying the middle range of the concreteness scale (e.g., "profit") …

Background: The global obesity crisis and the limited success of current treatments underscore the need to identify novel regulatory pathways. While central administration of α-Klotho exerts anti-obesity effects in rodents through AgRP neurons, the intracellular signaling mechanisms that mediate this process remain undefined.
Methods: To define the role of FGFR1 within the α-Klotho signaling pathway in AgRP neurons, we performed a targeted deletion of the receptor in adult mice using an AAV-mediated CRISPR/Cas9 system alongside transgenic models.
Results: Deletion of FGFR1 in AgRP neurons disrupted energy homeostasis, promoting weight gain induced by a high-fat diet. Electrophysiological recordings revealed that FGFR1 …

Background: The number and type of genetic alterations required to initiate breast and ovarian cancer remain unclear. While germline BRCA1/2 carriers show markedly elevated cancer risk, it is uncertain whether point mutations or copy number alterations constitute the rate-limiting events of tumourigenesis.
Methods: We developed a statistical framework extending prior incidence-mutation models to estimate the minimal number and type of driver events required for cancer initiation. Somatic mutation and copy-number data from >3000 breast and ovarian cancers in TCGA and METABRIC were compared between germline BRCA1/2 carriers and non-carriers matched on subtypes. Results were validated through analyses of evolutionary timing …

The identification of tumor cells is pivotal for understanding tumor heterogeneity and the tumor microenvironment. Recent advances in spatially resolved transcriptomics (SRT) have revolutionized the way that transcriptomic profiles are characterized and have enabled the simultaneous quantification of transcript locations in intact tissue samples. SRT is a promising alternative method to study gene expression patterns in spatial domains. Nevertheless, the precise detection of tumor regions within intact tissue remains a great challenge. A common strategy for identifying tumor cells is via tumor-specific marker gene expression signatures, which are highly dependent on marker accuracy. Another effective approach is through aneuploid copy …

Background: Despite the frequent need for adaptive planning in head and neck proton therapy, no quantitative indicators have been identified to determine when a plan should be adapted. Here, we aimed to determine a quantitative threshold for the change in plan quality between the primary treatment plan and verification plans that correlates with the physician's decision to adapt.
Methods: Primary treatment and verification plans were extracted from the clinical treatment planning system for 167 patients who underwent intensity-modulated proton therapy for base of tongue, tonsillar, or oropharyngeal cancers, with and without nodal involvement, between 2016 and 2021. All plans were …

Objective: To evaluate the feasibility of an online expressive writing (EW) intervention for survivors of adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer and determine whether iterative, theory-driven modifications can enhance response, adherence, and completion rates.
Methods: In this randomized pilot trial, survivors of AYA cancer were recruited through a hospital-based AYA oncology clinic and an online community. Forty participants were randomly assigned to the EW intervention or control group. To improve on lower-than-expected adherence and completion rates in a previous cohort, the protocol was iteratively revised using the Framework for Reporting Adaptations and Modifications to Evidence-based Implementation Strategies (FRAME-IS). Modifications included …

Background and objectives: Preoperative imaging provides surgeons with an initial estimate of tumor infiltration and the likelihood of achieving an en-bloc resection in spinal cord ependymomas, yet the definitive decision is made intraoperatively. This study characterizes the intraoperative ultrasound (iUS) features that guide real-time surgical strategy and are associated with successful en-bloc removal.
Methods: A retrospective review of iUS images obtained during resection of spinal cord ependymomas was performed. The presence of a peritumoral halo representing the transition zone between the tumor and the spinal cord, the dorsal sagittal area of the spinal cord overlying the tumoral poles, the presence …

Creativity and innovation are essential for modern organizations. While abundant research has helped to better understand creativity in everyday work life, considerably less attention has been paid to how individuals achieve creative performance during the implementation of innovation projects. We articulate a dialectical interplay between divergent and convergent processes of self-regulation that supports creative performance in innovation projects. We propose that a divergent exploration orientation contributes to creative performance by inducing a broad search for novelty and by stimulating iteration—repeated cycles of experimentation and refinement. Convergent processes of self-regulation—outcome focus and planning—strengthen the relationship between divergent processes and creative performance. …
An Intersectional Framework For Effectively Mentoring Latinas In Stem Fields, Rosalynn A. Vega
An Intersectional Framework For Effectively Mentoring Latinas In Stem Fields, Rosalynn A. Vega
Anthropology Faculty Publications
While Latinas are underrepresented across all areas of academia, this problem is especially severe in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. This chapter offers a “best practices,” step‑by-step guide for how to effectively mentor Latinas in STEM fields—drawing from interdisciplinary concepts, culled from critical race studies, statistics, and anthropology—and personal experience as a Latina in STEM, mentor, and mentee. Crenshaw’s (1989) theory of intersectionality, Farmer’s (1999) notion of structural violence, and multivariate statistical modeling is used to demonstrate that intersectional inequality can be traced back to social structures. Multi‑gender and multiethnic mentoring by individuals who are motivated to …
Promoting Maternal Health Through Community-Based Education: A Quality Improvement Initiative On Hypertension And Pregnancy Complications In An Outpatient Setting, Areli Mendez
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background
Hypertensive disorders during pregnancy remain one of the leading causes of maternal and fetal complications worldwide, particularly among underserved and minority populations. Spanish-speaking women often experience barriers related to language, limited health literacy, and reduced access to culturally appropriate education, which may delay the recognition of warning signs associated with pregnancy complications. Early education and awareness are essential to improve maternal outcomes and promote timely medical intervention.
Purpose Statement
The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a culturally tailored educational intervention designed to improve maternal knowledge regarding hypertension during pregnancy …

Over the past half-century, Holland’s RIASEC model has dominated vocational interest research. Although the RIASEC categories effectively capture general occupational themes, their breadth obscures meaningful variability across underlying basic interests, which are more refined interest scales. In this research, we adapted the Comprehensive Assessment of Basic Interests (CABIN; Su et ., 2019) to be used alongside O*NET for assessing interest fit, resulting in the 60-item CABIN-NET that measures 20 basic interest scales organized under RIASEC domains. In Study 1, we refined items for the CABIN-NET using a nationally representative adult sample (N = 768). In Studies 2 and 3, we …

Global Value Chains And Economic Inequality, Vivek Soundararajan, Ari Van Assche, Hari Bapuji, Gokhan Ertug
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In their inaugural editorial, Van Assche and De Marchi (2024) argued that meaningful progress in international business policy requires a more fine-grained understanding of how private international business practices intersect with public policy objectives. This editorial builds on that insight by applying it to a critical yet still underexplored issue – one on which we hope to see more research in this journal: the role of multinational enterprises (MNEs) and global value chains (GVCs) in shaping economic inequality within developing economies. Decisions related to sourcing, contracting, and GVC governance are inherently distributional rather than neutral, with important implications for how …

Collaborative Work Management Technologies And Managerial Intensity In U.S. Corporations: An Examination, Piyush Gulati, Arianna Marchetti, Phanish Puranam
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Do digital technologies reinforce managerial hierarchies or, instead, make them less relevant? We propose that the answer to this question depends on the nature of the technology: specifically, its relative impact on managers' capacity to supervise and on subordinates' need for supervision. Applying this framework to collaborative work management (CWM) technologies that facilitate real-time collaboration, communication, and task coordination, we predict that the adoption of such technologies should reduce managerial intensity and increase decentralization in organizations. To test this prediction, we use a difference-in-differences design on a novel data set built from over 26 million job listings (Lightcast) and over …

Mri Analysis Of The Wrist: Does The Presence Of Palmaris Longus Affect Median Nerve Position?, Victor B Chavez, Dean W Smith
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Background: Understanding the median nerve's position relative to surrounding anatomy is essential; however, there are many variations among individuals. This study assesses differences in median nerve position with or without palmaris longus (PL). We hypothesize that PL presence alters median nerve position, resulting in a greater distance to the skin volar surface, a decreased distance to the radius volar surface, and an increased distance to the flexor carpi radialis (FCR).
Methods: 1193 wrist magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies were retrospectively reviewed from 2019 to 2023. One hundred adults ages 18 to 50 meeting criteria were included for a power > 80%: …

We discuss generalizability analyses under a partially nested trial design, where part of the trial is nested within a cohort of trial-eligible individuals, while the rest of the trial is not nested. This design arises, for example, when only some centers participating in a trial are able to collect data on non-randomized individuals, or when data on non-randomized individuals cannot be collected for the full duration of the trial. Our work is motivated by the Necrotizing Enterocolitis Surgery Trial (NEST), which compared initial laparotomy versus peritoneal drain for infants with necrotizing enterocolitis or spontaneous intestinal perforation. During the first phase …

Background: Recent years have seen improvements in stroke-care pathways, including mobile stroke units (MSUs), and this may have affected the rate, predictors, and outcomes of patients with acute ischemic stroke who qualify for but do not receive treatment with intravenous thrombolysis (IVT).
Methods: This was a secondary observational cohort analysis of the prospective, multicenter BEST-MSU trial (Benefits of Stroke Treatment Delivered by a Mobile Stroke Unit Compared With Standard Management by Emergency Medical Services), conducted in 7 US cities from 2014 to 2020, comparing MSU management versus standard emergency department management for patients with suspected acute ischemic stroke. The analytical …

Safe firearm storage is critical for injury prevention, yet there is limited evidence surrounding effective interventions to promote storage behaviors among owners. One potential avenue for intervention is at the point-of-sale, a concept well-proven in the nutrition promotion and tobacco cessation space. This study explored firearm retailer attitudes toward a firearm storage intervention delivered at the point of sale. Seventeen in-depth interviews were conducted with firearm retailers from a suburban gun shop in Fort Bend, USA. This semi-structured interview assessed firearm retailer perceptions of the proposed point-of-sale intervention. Interviews were transcribed and independently coded to identify themes that emerged from …

Exploring The Personal Management Interview Program As A Burnout Prevention Strategy In Policing: A Qualitative Case Study, Lance C. Arnold
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Police officers in the United States experience severe burnout at rates exceeding other service professions, with approximately 75% experiencing burnout symptoms. Current interventions predominantly focus on individual coping mechanisms rather than addressing organizational and leadership factors contributing to burnout. This qualitative single-case study explored the perceptions and experiences of police leaders and officers concerning the utility of a personal management interview program to foster positive leadership behaviors as a resource-oriented preventive strategy against burnout in a midsize municipal police department in Texas. The study employed semistructured virtual interviews with eight participants: four police leaders and four police officers who had …

The Soviet Template And Its Application: Bulgarian State Policy Toward The Bulgarian Orthodox Church After 1944, Ventzislav Gueorgiev Karavaltchev
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The article examines the adoption and implementation of Soviet models in Bulgarian state policy toward the Bulgarian Orthodox Church following the communist takeover on September 9, 1944. Situating the Bulgarian case within a broader comparative framework, the study traces key continuities between Soviet church–state relations after the October Revolution of 1917—particularly as was institutionalized during the Stalinist period—and their subsequent application in Bulgaria. Drawing on extensive archival materials from Bulgarian and Russian repositories, the article demonstrates that all major decisions concerning the Church were closely coordinated with, and often directly approved by, Moscow. Beyond repression and legal restriction, the analysis …

Background/Objectives: Functional difficulty and depression often coexist in older adults, yet local Singapore-based research often lacks detailed temporal resolution due to heterogeneity in ageing. This study employs non-parametric, data-driven longitudinal clustering to analyse functional trajectories and their association with depression, using high-frequency data to pinpoint key intervention periods. Methods: Data were drawn from 4273 community-dwelling older adults from Singapore Life Panel® (2020–2024). Participants completed quarterly self-reported assessments of ADL, IADL and depressive symptoms (8-item CES-D). We employed k-means longitudinal clustering (kml) to identify functional trajectory groups and Cox regression to evaluate the hazard of increased depression (≥5-point increase in …

Unsettling Ground: Rethinking Land Tenure Security In Indonesia’S Legally Plural Setting, Widya Naseva Tuslian
The Indonesian Journal of Socio-Legal Studies
This study examines the inconsistencies in various regulations regarding land and land management in Indonesia, which give rise to divergent interpretations and legal uncertainty—ultimately becoming a source of conflict that is not easily resolved. The study focuses on the protracted conflict among local residents living in 26 subdistricts in Surabaya who hold “Surat Ijo” certificates. The residents believe that, as certificate holders, they have the status of owners. Meanwhile, citing various laws and regulations on land governance, the Surabaya city government maintains that these certificates affirm the residents’ status as tenants of land assets owned by the Surabaya city government. …

Through the careful analysis of the border-crossing epistemologies that are collaboratively shared and validated by a fifth grader and ethnographer in liminal classroom spaces, we identify key methodological approaches for researchers working with border crossers to document the co-production of knowledge among researchers and participants, to engage in active reflection with trusted thought partners, and to understand the possibilities for personal epistemic expansion.
