Do Attorneys Discriminate? Understanding The Implications Of Bias On Voir Dire & Jury Selection, Jessica Lambert Mar 2026

Do Attorneys Discriminate? Understanding The Implications Of Bias On Voir Dire & Jury Selection, Jessica Lambert

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Biases, generally defined as predispositions or inclinations for or against ideas, is a broadly prevalent aspect of human cognition and decision-making (Steinhauser, 2020). Bias is present in every decision-making structure, even those in which we strive for the greatest neutrality, such as the legal system (Alter, 2010). An especially important place to seek to minimize or eliminate bias is in the courtroom. Our justice system is built upon the assumption of impartiality and nonpartisanship (Rosenberg, 2008), yet biases and stereotypical decision- making are common criticisms of the court (Curley et al., 2022; Chopp, 2017). This study attempts to identify the …

Beyrouth 1978-1982 : Le Fonds Photographique De Monica Maurer – Une Collection Contre L’Oubli Et La Destruction, Aude Fourel

Regards

It was while searching for unused film footage on the Palestinian struggle for a documentary essay that I discovered the filmography of German director Monica Maurer and her work restoring and preserving Palestinian films. For the past four years, we have been working together to digitise and catalogue the photographs and documents she still keeps at home.
I reflect on the paths opened up by the writing of a film in the making, on the formatting of Monica Maurer’s photographic collection, and on the initial prospects for visual and historical studies of this material in the particular context of the …

"By The Sweat Of His Brow"?: Master Mechanics And Class Position In Antebellum New Orleans, Caleb G. Roark Mar 2026

"By The Sweat Of His Brow"?: Master Mechanics And Class Position In Antebellum New Orleans, Caleb G. Roark

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis argues that New Orleans’s skilled laborers profited alongside or from enslaved laborers. Proponents of free labor ideology, largely relegated to the North, charged that the skilled mechanic was the prototypical “free laborer.” In contemporary and modern portrayals, the systems of free and enslaved labor were considered antithetical. This thesis posits that these views are incorrect. Free and enslaved labor flourished together in the Crescent City. Despite their absence in historical understandings of the antebellum South, skilled laborers succeeded in New Orleans. I track societal debates across Louisiana’s newspapers concerning the status and success of mechanics across the state. …

Dementia has a significant impact on individuals, families, communities, and the economy. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) accounts for 60–80% of dementia cases. The APOE e4 allele is well known as the primary genetic risk factor for AD and dementia. Studies have also shown that sleep apnea increases the risk of dementia. Some research further suggests a possible interaction between sleep apnea and the APOE in dementia development; however, this relationship remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to synthesize evidence from the existing literature and report findings on the relationship between APOE, sleep apnea, and dementia. A systematic search of …

INTRODUCTION: Cancer treatment decision making (CTDM) presents important challenges among older adults due to variation in health and functional status, presence of comorbidities, differing goals/values, quality and quantity of life considerations, and limited inclusion in clinical trials. Nursing standards and guidelines call for competence in supporting CTDM and nurses advocate for greater involvement. However, clear understanding of the existing evidence to inform nursing practice is lacking. We aimed to map and synthesize evidence that provides insight into nursing practice in CTDM among older adults, with attention to nursing roles, required skills and competencies, potential barriers and facilitators, and outcomes studied. …

Leveraging Csr To Buffer Brand Challenges During Crises: A Saudi Arabian Perspective, Nouf Alrayes, Abdullah Alhidari

Journal of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Emerging Markets

Crises, such as economic downturns or global health pandemics, pose significant business challenges. Engaging in CSR initiatives that contribute to societal well-being can help mitigate the negative consequences of crises, reinforce customer gratitude, and minimize corporate hypocrisy. CSR is critical in shaping a company’s accountability and ethical responsibilities. Consequently, there is an opportunity for the firm to see the role of CSR and how it affects customers’ responses and attitudes during any difficult situation. Drawing upon attribution theory and the customer gratitude reciprocity cycle, a conceptual framework was developed to test the impact of CSR on the variables: corporate hypocrisy, …

Dysregulation of cell cycle checkpoints is a cancer hallmark, with ubiquitination-controlled protein stability playing a pivotal role. Although p21, a key cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, is tightly regulated by ubiquitin-mediated degradation, the key upstream modulators of its ubiquitination remain incompletely defined. Here, we identify poly(ADP-ribose) glycohydrolase (PARG) as a regulator of p21 stability in gastric cancer (GC) cells. We show that PARG expression is markedly upregulated in GC tissues and correlates with poor patient prognosis. Functional assays revealed that genetic depletion of PARG triggers G2/M phase arrest and impairs GC cell proliferation. Mechanistically, we demonstrate that PARG loss enhances p21 PARylation, …

Mechanical force generated by blood flow stimulates emergence of the first hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) that populate the blood system. Force drives the transition of HSC precursors from an endothelial to hematopoietic identity, yet the molecular regulation of this fate switch remains poorly understood. We report that shear stress triggers adaptation in mitochondrial composition, ultrastructure, and function, which are essential for hematopoietic fate and engraftment potential. Shear stress remodels mitochondria in hemogenic endothelium by promoting mitochondrial gene transcription and protein synthesis. Laminar flow selectively initiates translation of 5' terminal polypyrimidine (5'TOP) motif-containing transcripts, which commonly encode ribosome and translation machinery. …

Lipid bilayers form the basis of organellar architecture, structure, and compartmentalization in the cell. Decades of biophysical, biochemical, and imaging studies on purified or in vitro-reconstituted liposomes have shown that variations in lipid composition influence the physical properties of membranes, such as thickness and curvature. However, similar studies characterizing these membrane properties within the native cellular context have remained technically challenging. Recent advancements in cellular cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) imaging enable high-resolution, three-dimensional views of native organellar membrane architecture preserved in near-native conditions. We previously developed a "Surface Morphometrics" pipeline that generates surface mesh reconstructions to model and quantify cellular membrane …

Isde Guidelines On The Management Of Ct2n0 Esophageal Cancer, Sarbajit Mukherjee Mar 2026

Isde Guidelines On The Management Of Ct2n0 Esophageal Cancer, Sarbajit Mukherjee

All Publications

Esophageal cancer incidence is rising globally, with at least 500,000 new cases diagnosed annually. Management options for non-metastatic disease include primary resection, neoadjuvant or perioperative therapies, or definitive non-surgical treatment, with the choice being guided by tumor staging, histology, patient fitness, and available resources. However, even with the use of advanced diagnostic modalities, preoperative clinical staging is challenging with respect to accuracy of both tumor and nodal assessment. Early-stage esophageal cancer may be managed with local therapies, such as endoscopic mucosal resection or submucosal dissection, while for more advanced tumors managed with curative intent neoadjuvant oncologic therapy is commonly recommended. …

Neuroinflammation, encompassing both innate and adaptive immune responses, plays a crucial role in ischemic stroke. Although B lymphocytes are central to adaptive immunity, their contributions to ischemic stroke remain poorly understood. Here, we demonstrated that B lymphocytes accumulate in ischemic lesions, forming germinal center-like structures at the later stage after stroke, which mainly depended on in situ proliferation. This accumulation correlated with worsened neuroinflammation and ischemic injury, whereas B cell depletion reduced chronic brain damage during stroke. Mechanistically, microglia recruited B cells into ischemic lesions through MIF-CD74/CXCR4 signaling during the early phase of stroke, while IFN-related pathways in B cells …

The immune system is not only essential for host defense, but it is also involved in tissue maintenance and disease pathogenesis. Macrophages play a key role in tissue repair, fibrosis, and tumorigenesis, but the mechanisms underlying their multifunctionality have not been fully explored. Here, we identified Mrep (Ly6ChiCX3CR1loPDPN+CD9+) as a crucial subset of macrophages for muscle regeneration after muscle injury. Muscle regeneration required Mrep-derived activin A, which was produced via the TLR4/TIR domain-containing adapter-inducing interferon-β/TANK-binding kinase 1/interferon regulatory factor 3/7 signaling pathway in response to muscle injury. Mrep exerted pathological effects by secreting activin A in a model of genetically …
