Factors For Patient Trust And Acceptance Of Medical Artificial Intelligence, Ana Bracic, Kayte Spector-Bagdady, Sophie Towle, Rina Zhang, Cornelius A. James, Nicholson W. Price Ii

Articles

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in clinical care, but widespread adoption requires patient trust. Trust may be enhanced through systemic governance mechanisms or frontline clinicians providing a human in the loop for AI oversight. However, it is unclear how different approaches specifically influence patient trust in the use of medical AI. The objective is to determine the extent to which patient trust in and choice of medical scenarios involving AI are associated with governance mechanisms, clinician presence, performance, and data quality.

Habitat And Conditions Of Poisoning Of Toxic Plants In North America, Michael H. Ralphs

Poisonous Plant Research (PPR)

This paper presents a list of important poisonous plants in North America that are toxic to both livestock and humans. The aim of this paper is to present information to help reduce the risk of poisoning. The paper emphasizes the particular plant communities in which these plants grow. Some of these plants are endemic, growing on specific soils or specific ecological sites. Others are distributed more broadly throughout a vegetation type. A few of the plants are widespread, ranging over several broad ecosystems. In diagnosing poisoning, it is important to know what plants are expected to grow in the communities …

While de novo variants cause many Mendelian disorders, their detection currently requires sequencing of the proband and both biological parents. This is not feasible when only one parent is available, a limitation for millions of families. Here, we develop duoNovo, which identifies de novo variants from parent-proband duos using long-read sequencing followed by haplotype reconstruction and detection of identical-by-descent haplotype blocks. We sequenced 104 trios with PacBio HiFi sequencing and applied duoNovo to each of the 208 duos constructed by masking one parent, classifying over 55 million variants according to their de novo status. We evaluated duoNovo's performance against classifications …

Retaliation Management : Trade Imbalance And China’S Retaliatory Tariffs During The 2018 Trade War, Jinpo Li Mar 2026

Retaliation Management : Trade Imbalance And China’S Retaliatory Tariffs During The 2018 Trade War, Jinpo Li

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

In 2018, the United States initiated a trade conflict with China, prompting a counter-response by the latter. Despite extensive research into the ramifications of the US-China trade conflict, the intricacies of China’s strategic formulation of retaliatory tariffs remain unclear. This study focuses on how the trade imbalance influences China’s retaliatory tariff strategies during the trade war. Our findings suggest that China’s retaliatory measures mainly concentrate on products with which China maintains a bilateral trade surplus vis-à-vis the United States. On an extensive margin, notwithstanding the comprehensive tariff imposition on US imports, products that represent a surplus are more likely to …

Using Facial Landmarks For Lip Motion Interpretation Applications, Kimi S. Wright Mar 2026

Using Facial Landmarks For Lip Motion Interpretation Applications, Kimi S. Wright

Theses and Dissertations

Facial motion, particularly lip movement, carries rich information about human speech that can be leveraged for a variety of computer vision and speech-processing tasks. Unlike other pixel-based methods, this work investigates the use of facial landmarks as a compact, privacy- preserving, and computationally efficient representation for lip-motion analysis. We evaluate landmark-based models across multiple tasks, including visual voice activity detection (VVAD), lip–audio synchroniza- tion, and visual speech recognition (VSR) for liveness detection. Using LRS3-VVAD1 and LRS22 datasets, we demonstrate that landmark-only models can achieve performance comparable to pixel-based systems for VVAD and synchronization, while significantly reducing parameter counts and inference …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Meningitis has significant clinical morbidity and mortality in children. Mortality in children, especially neonates, is high due to diagnostic difficulty. Diagnosis of pediatric meningitis is traditionally made using CSF parameters and cultures. The performance of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) meningitis/encephalitis (ME) panel needs further evaluation in the pediatric population.

Methods: Medical records of children with a positive CSF ME panel (June 1, 2016 to August 31, 2018) were reviewed retrospectively. We extracted data about antimicrobials used, laboratory and culture results, duration of antibiotic treatment, hospital stay, and follow-up. Long term outcome was evaluated.

Results: A …

This report describes a female patient in her 60s with an immune-mediated necrotising myopathy (IMNM) occurring after semaglutide use. She was found to have progressive dysphagia, dysphonia, proximal muscle weakness and creatine kinase elevation over a 4-month course. Her symptoms were preceded by a single dose of semaglutide. Her work-up revealed features consistent with necrotising myopathy with inflammatory infiltrate on biopsy, and she responded to immunosuppression with corticosteroids and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG). She gradually improved and successfully returned to her baseline functional status while off immunosuppression for several months and with continued avoidance of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. School of Biological and Marine Sciences

BackgroundThe presence of artificial structures in our marine environments is increasing rapidly, with negative impacts for biodiversity. Greening of grey infrastructure (GGI) - an eco-engineering method applied to the marine context - aims to increase the ecological value of traditional grey infrastructure, while still allowing it to perform its primary human-centric function. GGI is a rapidly increasing field of research, being tested and implemented worldwide by academics, private practitioners, governments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), amongst others, using a variety of methods. Outcomes vary widely, and results are communicated across a range of peer-reviewed and grey literature, rendering the evidence base for …

Background: Sepsis is a life-threatening complication of infection with high mortality. A high-throughput analysis of circulating blood proteins may provide mechanistic insight and potent therapeutic targets for the prevention of sepsis.

Methods: We used multivariable Cox regression analysis to examine the association of 4955 plasma proteins, measured by SomaScan, with the risk of incident sepsis among 11 065 participants of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study (visit 3 in 1993 to 1995; mean age, 60.1 years, 54.4% female, 21.0% Black). Proteins (false discovery rate [FDR] of P < 0.05) discovered at visit 3 were replicated using data at visit 5 (n = 4869 in 2011 to 2013: mean age, 75.5 years) and in the Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS) (n = 3512 in 1992 to 1993; mean age, 74.5 years). Canonical pathways were identified by enrichment analyses.

Results: At ARIC visit three, 669 proteins were associated with the risk …

When The Muses Went Silent And Almost Died:, Thomas M. Hines

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

What would life be like if there were no fine or performing arts? If music could not be heard in public, if great paintings of famous artists of the past and present could not be seen—in other words, how would we adjust in an esthetically deprived existence? In truth, we could continue to see and hear; nature would still be around us, but the interpretative acuity of our senses would be dulled. Opportunities to witness works of art would not be readily available. Our creative images would be internalized and not reflective of visual or auditory models. It would be …

“I Was So Nervous For Him” – Kerstin Thorborg And Jussi Björling, Nils-Göran Olve

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

Kerstin Thorborg (1896–1970) was a leading mezzo-soprano with the Metropolitan for thirteen seasons, singing twenty roles in 350 performances. Her debut was as Frick in Die Walküre on 21 December 1936 and her final performances in 1950. Fifteen years older than Jussi Björling and born in the same Swedish region Dalarna (Dalecarlia), she enjoyed twenty years of rather solitary retirement there and died ten years after him. Her Met repertoire focused on Wagner so they met rarely on stage, but of course they knew each other well during the years they met professionally (1936–41 and 1945–50). They can be heard …
