Introduction: We investigated the association between traumatic brain injury (TBI) and incidence of early-onset dementia (EOD) versus late-onset dementia (LOD).

Methods: We included 501,710 UK Biobank participants (average age 56.5). Over a median 13.6 years of follow-up, 836 developed EOD (before 65) and 8947 developed LOD (after 65). We estimated hazard ratios (HRs) for TBI's association with EOD and LOD using Cox proportional hazard models with TBI as a time-varying exposure and coefficient.

Results: TBI was associated with higher risk of both EOD (HR: 4.06 [95% confidence interval: 3.13, 5.26]) and LOD (HR: 2.51 [2.31, 2.72]. Among participants included in …

Double-Crispr Knockout Simulation (Dkosim): A Monte-Carlo Randomization System To Model Cell Growth Behavior And Infer The Optimal Library Design For Growth-Based Double Knockout Screens, Yue Gu, Traver Hart, Luis Leon-Novelo, John Paul Shen

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Advances in functional genomic technology, notably CRISPR using Cas9 or Cas12, now allow for large-scale double perturbation screens in which pairs of genes are inactivated, allowing for the experimental detection of genetic interactions (GIs). However, as it is not possible to validate GIs in high-throughput, there is no gold standard dataset where true interactions are known. Hence, we constructed a Double-CRISPR Knockout Simulation (DKOsim), which allows users to reproducibly generate synthetic simulation data where the single gene fitness effect of each gene and the interaction of each gene pair can be specified by the investigator. We adapted Monte-Carlo randomization methods …

Background: Hypotension after induction of general anaesthesia (postinduction hypotension) is common in patients undergoing noncardiac surgery and frequently requires treatment with vasopressors such as norepinephrine. We tested the hypothesis that giving norepinephrine continuously using a syringe infusion pump, compared with giving it as repeated manual boluses, reduces postinduction hypotension within 15 min after starting induction of general anaesthesia in low-to-moderate risk noncardiac surgery patients.

Methods: Patients undergoing elective noncardiac surgery were randomised to either continuous norepinephrine infusion or manual bolus norepinephrine administration intravenously during induction of general anaesthesia. In both groups, norepinephrine was administered through a peripheral venous catheter. Blood …

Literary Colonization And Locating Avenues Of Subversion In Bobby Flores-Villasis' Suite Bergamasque, Michael Aaron C. Gomez

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance

This paper examines four short stories included in the collection titled Suite Bergamasque, written by multi-awarded Negrense playwright and fictionist Bobby Flores-Villasis. A materialist reading situates Villasis within the canon of Philippine literature in English and analyzes the way his stories formally render the class antagonisms of history through the interconnected narratives of Dumaguete City’s sugar elite. Finally, this paper also contends that the political imagination of Villasis’ work exhorts contemporary Dumaguete writers to critically examine inherited hagiographies in order to describe fully the conditions that have shaped the city into its contemporary formation, particularly the phenomena of gentrification …

Han Kang On Time And Body, Clarissa V. Militante Apr 2026

Han Kang On Time And Body, Clarissa V. Militante

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance

Han Kang's novel Human Acts delves into the liminality of time-space, as memories about a historical event become a ritual of remembering for those who survived tragedy. Time is not only historical, but can also be foregrounded by bodies, both dead and surviving. The survivors do not merely recall the past but inhabit it, too, so that they will not forget. This in itself is an act of defiance and resistance.

Development And Evaluation Of An Mpas-Based Urban Modeling System For The New York City Region, Marco S. Yu, Kristian Rice

Publications and Research

Complex geometry and varying land cover make urban environments difficult to simulate accurately. This research presents a performance evaluation of the newly developed urban modeling system in the Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS). Weather over the New York metropolitan area during June 2018 was simulated using supercomputing resources and the new urban modeling system. Modeled 2-m air temperature was compared with historical hourly observations from five NYC Mesonet stations, one located in each of the five boroughs. Comparison showed that the model follows the timing of warming and cooling well, but overestimates the magnitude of temperature swings at peaks …

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

Glioblastoma multiforme is the most common adult primary tumor with a grim median survival time of 14.6 months. It is characterized by rapid progression, diffuse infiltration, and rather poor clinical outcomes. The WHO classifies GBM as a grade 4 diffuse astrocytic tumor with distinctive histopathological features including high mitotic activity, marked cellular atypia, microvascular proliferation, and necrosis. Advances in molecular diagnostics have further classified GMB into IDH-wild type and IDH-mutant subtypes, with important therapeutic and prognostic implications. Key genetic alterations, such as EGFR amplification, PTEN loss, TP53 mutations, TERT promoter mutations, and MGMT methylations, have been identified as contributing to …

Predicting Ventilation From Single Breathing Phase Non-Contrast Ct Using Swin Transformers, Yi-Kuan Liu, Hsu-Ting Kuo, Alaa Melek, Richard Castillo, Yevgeniy Vinogradskiy, Lili Zhao, Girish Nair, Edward Castillo Apr 2026

Predicting Ventilation From Single Breathing Phase Non-Contrast Ct Using Swin Transformers, Yi-Kuan Liu, Hsu-Ting Kuo, Alaa Melek, Richard Castillo, Yevgeniy Vinogradskiy, Lili Zhao, Girish Nair, Edward Castillo

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary ventilation imaging enables functional avoidance radiotherapy treatment plans by quantifying regional lung function. However, current clinical standards, such as 99𝑚Tc-based single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), rely on radioactive tracers, which can introduce imaging deposition artifacts. CT ventilation imaging (CTVI) methods based on both physical models and deep learning approaches currently require multiple CT images as input, such as the inhale/exhale phases of a 4DCT. While the theoretical foundation of physics-based CTVI is built on multi-phase information, the feasibility of single-phase deep learning CTV models has not been determined.

PURPOSE: While deep learning methods have predicted SPECT ventilation from …

Computed Tomography For Four-Dimensional Dose Calculation: Effect Of Detector Array Length, Inhwan Yeo, Qianyi Xu Apr 2026

Computed Tomography For Four-Dimensional Dose Calculation: Effect Of Detector Array Length, Inhwan Yeo, Qianyi Xu

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

PURPOSE: Four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) is susceptible to a geometrical error when respiration changes upon patient shift. 4DCT using 16-cm detector arrays, not needing the shift, has been shown to improve geometrical accuracy, compared with a conventional 4DCT (4-cm array), albeit with some Hounsfield unit discrepancies. The 4DCTs were validated for 4D planning.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A lung-mimicking phantom containing a spherical target with ten respiratory traces and three tumor-shaped targets with their traces was respectively imaged when, to each of the ten-positions/phases, the lung was moved (1) step-wisely by helical scan at each movement (ground truth; 4DCTGT), …

Traditional mentorship models often ignore intersecting identities, leading to experiences of marginalization, mentor absenteeism, and cultural disconnection. The CIM framework integrates Critical Race Theory, Intersectionality, and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy to reframe mentoring as a social justice practice grounded in equity, empowerment, and relational trust. Using qualitative content analysis of pláticas, the study uncovers three key …

Rethinking News Classification Through A Multi-Dimensional Framework, Luana De Jesus Ferreira Apr 2026

Rethinking News Classification Through A Multi-Dimensional Framework, Luana De Jesus Ferreira

Honors Theses

This thesis proposes a multi-dimensional framework for news classification that evaluates articles across three independent dimensions: headline accuracy, language neutrality, and content reliability. These dimensions produce both a continuous reliability score and a five-tier interpretive scale, while additionally classifying articles by genre and topic. To operationalize this framework, a structured annotation protocol was developed and applied to a dataset of 373 news articles drawn from 79 outlets spanning a wide range of contemporary media ecosystem. A binary Logistic Regression classifier trained on the ISOT Fake News Dataset was then evaluated against this dataset to examine how a model trained on …

Bodies As Vessels: (Re)Production, Consumption, And Female Identity In The Handmaid’S Tale And Dawn, Shelby Clark Apr 2026

Bodies As Vessels: (Re)Production, Consumption, And Female Identity In The Handmaid’S Tale And Dawn, Shelby Clark

Honors Theses

This honors thesis examines how reproduction and food are used to signify power and impact female identity in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid's Tale and Octavia Butler’s Dawn. Both feminist dystopian novels portray societies that secure futurity through the commodification and management of women's domestic labor. The protagonist of each novel, Offred in The Handmaid's Tale and Lilith in Dawn, is responsible for ensuring the survival of humanity through forced reproduction and is additionally expected to produce or manage food. In this thesis, I argue that in both novels, female identity is reclaimed and affirmed as separate from a commodified state …

Icarus’S Fall: Villainization In Wicked, Star Wars, And The Untamed, Laura Renfroe

Honors Theses

When looking back on the most beloved, yet infamous, villains of popular culture, one can note an abundant rise of prequels and backstory-driven media exploring the paths that villain characters take that lead them to their tragic fall. Some of those stories include John M. Chu’s Wicked, George Lucas’s Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, and Chen Jialin and Zheng Weiwin’s The Untamed, each of which explores protagonists who are labeled as “wicked” and depicted as fallen to the “dark side.” While these characters are often studied in existing literary research, there have yet to be explicit ties …

School of Psychology

Rationale: Cannabis use disorder (CUD) affects over 50 million people globally. Emerging evidence shows that some people with CUD may experience altered social cognition (e.g., emotion recognition or differentiation). These impairments can affect their ability to understand others’ emotional states and navigate social interactions, potentially contributing to chronic cannabis use, even when it leads to interpersonal problems. However, the literature on social cognition in cannabis users is inconsistent, based on a paucity of studies, and characterised by methodological issues including conflation of remitted and current CUD (i.e., does not consider abstinence effects on cognition), limited assessment of cannabis metrics (e.g., …
