Exploring Educators’ Perceptions Of Pedagogical Strategies, School Support, And Parental Involvement On Bilingual Students’ Academic Performance, Richard W. Valencia Jan 2024

Exploring Educators’ Perceptions Of Pedagogical Strategies, School Support, And Parental Involvement On Bilingual Students’ Academic Performance, Richard W. Valencia

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive

ABSTRACT

According to U.S. law, public schools in the United States must provide all students, including English learners, with equal educational opportunities. Multiple researchers have shown that bilingual education (teaching through both a student’s native language and another language) is the most beneficial way to educate emergent bilingual (EB) students. However, not all bilingual programs have a positive impact on EB student academic achievement. Issues within bilingual programs may be due to discrepancies within the program or to outside factors. The purpose of this study was to examine educators’ perceptions about how fifth-grade bilingual programs affect the academic achievement of …

What’S In A Threat: A Corpus-Based, Speech Act And Lexicogrammatical Approach To Threats In English, Natalie Raun Carter Jan 2024

What’S In A Threat: A Corpus-Based, Speech Act And Lexicogrammatical Approach To Threats In English, Natalie Raun Carter

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

Threats can be made without using language at all, but previous research on the language of threats is limited and primarily examines threats with a small amount of constructed data. Building on Austin (1962) and Searle (1965; 1969)’s speech act theory and using a corpus of naturally occurring data consisting of 827 threatening texts from publicly available websites and law enforcement, this dissertation determines what constitutes a threat, as well as the interdependence between words and grammar.

Pragmatically, this dissertation identifies four required felicity conditions that must be met to constitute a threat—building on those set by John Searle, Bruce …

Trauma In Weird Literature: Weird Experiences And Neuropsychiatric Conditions, Mijin Cho Jan 2024

Trauma In Weird Literature: Weird Experiences And Neuropsychiatric Conditions, Mijin Cho

AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

This study aims to explore the element of trauma or shock in weird fiction using H. P. Lovecraft’s “The Colour out of Space” as the focal text. I am interested in the cognitive estrangement and body disfigurement following encounters with the weird, which in this case would be the meteorite’s Colour, on the characters experiencing it in the story, including the Gardners and Ammi. The goal is to investigate our reactions to being pushed past our thresholds as human beings using analysis of characters, diction, and rhetoric in weird fiction stories and non-fiction patient narratives to better understand how weird …

Examining Effects Of Perceived Discrimination And Loneliness On Overall Health Outcomes In Black Americans, Apoorva Saravanan Jan 2024

Examining Effects Of Perceived Discrimination And Loneliness On Overall Health Outcomes In Black Americans, Apoorva Saravanan

AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

On average, Black Americans suffer more from a wide range of diseases when compared to White Americans. The national mortality rate for Black Americans is also 24% higher than their White counterparts. Although there are multiple factors contributing to such disparities, one line of research provides strong evidence that negative health outcomes are more likely to occur in Black Americans who experience racial discrimination than those who experience no discrimination. A separate line of research also provides evidence that loneliness is a major health risk factor. In fact, prior research indicates that the experience of discrimination and loneliness are both …

Disability Accommodation And Improving Accessibility In Public Transportation, Alexander Burdette Jan 2024

Disability Accommodation And Improving Accessibility In Public Transportation, Alexander Burdette

AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

This paper addresses the need for accessibility in public transportation from a disabled perspective, focusing on four key areas wherein states can enact meaningful change. These areas as specified are physical accessibility, which concerns the built and engineered environment of public transit and surrounding areas; informational accessibility, which concerns the availability and clarity of information passengers need to navigate transit; management accessibility, which refers to the way information processing is handled by transit agencies when exchanging information with transit users; and social accessibility, which deals with the interpersonal environment that public transit creates and facilitates. Specific areas of attention are …

Women Of Color Collectives In Doctoral Education: How Women Of Color Doctoral Students Thrive Together, Jenelle Nila Jan 2024

Women Of Color Collectives In Doctoral Education: How Women Of Color Doctoral Students Thrive Together, Jenelle Nila

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Women of Color have a variety of experiences within academia, many of which are marred by the interstices of racism, classism, sexism, and the hetero patriarchy that upholds the structure of white supremacy in higher education (Gay, 2004; Peña, 2022). However, there is a legacy of Women of Color who have created and continue to create collectives to survive and, more importantly, thrive within academia. This qualitative phenomenological study uses Critical Feminist theory and Plática methodology to understand how and why Women of Color create collectives in their doctoral programs. Furthermore, this study serves as a marker on the genealogical …

The Specter Of Representation: Computational Images And Algorithmic Capitalism, Samine Joudat Jan 2024

The Specter Of Representation: Computational Images And Algorithmic Capitalism, Samine Joudat

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The processes of computation and automation that produce digitized objects have displaced the concept of an image once conceived through optical devices such as a photographic plate or a camera mirror that were invented to accommodate the human eye. Computational images exist as information within networks mediated by machines. They are increasingly less about what art history understands as representation or photography considers indexing and more an operational product of data processing.

Through genealogical, theoretical, and practice-based investigation, this dissertation project traces a lineage of computation through images from early cybernetics to contemporary machine learning under algorithmic capitalist conditions of …

Teacher Resilience: Validating An Instrument In The Us Context, Joy Mccreary Jan 2024

Teacher Resilience: Validating An Instrument In The Us Context, Joy Mccreary

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The research surrounding teacher resilience is an emerging field, and the cultivation of instruments that measure teacher resilience should be bolstered. Specifically, there is a need for the creation of an instrument to be used in the United States. To address this need, I piloted the Multidimensional Teachers’ Resilience Scale (Mansfield & Wosnitza, 2015; Peixoto et al., 2020) in the US. The Multidimensional Teachers’ Resilience Scale (MTRS) comprises 29 items on four dimensions of resilience (professional, motivational, social, and emotional). The MTRS shows decent reliability and validity, but also demonstrates a need for a stronger instrument to be developed. As …

The Orchestral Music Of Robert Nathaniel Dett: A New Critical Edition Of His Orchestration Of The Enchantment Suite, Michael Todd Stanley Jan 2024

The Orchestral Music Of Robert Nathaniel Dett: A New Critical Edition Of His Orchestration Of The Enchantment Suite, Michael Todd Stanley

CGU Theses & Dissertations

In the annals of music history, there are many composers whose works have fallen out of the repertoire over time, including some who were very famous and popular during their lifetimes. This phenomenon is compounded for composers from diverse backgrounds who often face issues of racism or other forms of discrimination when trying to make inroads into the Western classical music establishment. Such has typically been the case for Black composers in America until recent cultural events spurred an explosion of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives across the U.S. As a result, the music of African American composers past …

Turning Inward: Students’ Experiences With Mindful Anti-Oppressive Pedagogy In Higher Education, Rachael E. Horn Langford Jan 2024

Turning Inward: Students’ Experiences With Mindful Anti-Oppressive Pedagogy In Higher Education, Rachael E. Horn Langford

CGU Theses & Dissertations

In the past 15-20 years, contemplative practices, designed to cultivate present-moment awareness, have become more common in K-12 educational settings with some growth in higher education contexts seeking to reorient around teaching the “whole student”. In response to calls that have also emerged in higher education to advance social justice aims, this multimethod study examines the role of mindfulness in an undergraduate sociology of body course taught from an anti-oppression education lens. This study fills the gap in the existing literature by exploring a deeper understanding of experiences with mindfulness in higher education from the lens and language of students. …

Black Lgbtq+ Students’ Perceptions Of Belonging: Resource Centers, Relationships, And Intersectionality On College Campuses, Wesley M. Cox

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation takes a non-traditional approach to qualitative research. Kikimethodology focuses on the lives and perspectives of Black Queer and Transgender college students. This dissertation shows how these collegians navigate identity politics, resource centers, and seek out belonging on their campus. The findings hone in on four broader themes: (a) relationships with peers; (b) relationships with faculty/staff; (c) campus environment; and (d) intersectionality. This dissertation is about Black Queer and Transgender advocacy, knowledge, leadership, life and expression in context with college campuses. The results of this research center on the students’ navigation of campus, agency, family, programming, student leadership, and …

The Influence Of Religion In Frantz Fanon’S Decolonial Theory And Ethics On Violence, Dorival Pimenta Do Nascimento Jan 2024

The Influence Of Religion In Frantz Fanon’S Decolonial Theory And Ethics On Violence, Dorival Pimenta Do Nascimento

CGU Theses & Dissertations

How does religious language influence Frantz Fanon’s Decolonial theory and ethics onviolence in the struggle for decolonization and disalienation? This is the question I address in this dissertation carefully observing Patrick Crowley's mention of the presence of religious language in Fanon's work. Crowley’s argument is that Fanon’s thought is apocalyptical in structure and is marked by a dramatic sense of temporality prior to his arrival in Algeria. Crowley develops his article focusing on the messianic question, while the religious language in Fanon's work he ends up relegating to a second plan. In this sense, this dissertation is developed with the …

“The Scientist Is Wrong”: Joseph Fielding Smith, George Mccready Price, And The Ascent Of Creationist Thought Among Latter-Day Saints In The Twentieth Century, Thomas Benjamin Spackman Jan 2024

“The Scientist Is Wrong”: Joseph Fielding Smith, George Mccready Price, And The Ascent Of Creationist Thought Among Latter-Day Saints In The Twentieth Century, Thomas Benjamin Spackman

CGU Theses & Dissertations

At the beginning of the twentieth century, leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints took a wary but open position regarding the burgeoning science of evolution. By the end of the century, Latter-day Saints had effectively become old-earth creationists. Through implicit hermeneutical framing and explicit statements, Church-published interpretive materials created a strong perception of a Church orthodoxy; scripture might allow for an old earth, but nothing died before the fall of Adam c. 4000 BC. Such a time frame ruled out the possibility of the evolution of plants, animals, and humans, and attributed the formation of fossils …

The Tradition Of Microtonal Guitar On The American West Coast, Kenneth M. Cotich Jan 2024

The Tradition Of Microtonal Guitar On The American West Coast, Kenneth M. Cotich

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Microtonal music in the United States has a significant connection with the American West Coast. Influential microtonal musicians and theorists originated on the West Coast or passed through California, subsequently inspiring future generations of composers to work outside of twelve-tone equal temperament (12tet). This project begins by examining the early trailblazers of music education and composition in California who sought to rearticulate the fundamentals of music. Two substantial sources that influenced new musical materials were the harmonic series and non-Western music and culture. Microtonal music in California is then examined through the efforts of a series of outsider speculative music …

From Classroom To Community: Cultivating Critical Consciousness In K-12 Ethnic Studies For Civic And Community Engagement, Edward Flores Jan 2024

From Classroom To Community: Cultivating Critical Consciousness In K-12 Ethnic Studies For Civic And Community Engagement, Edward Flores

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The institutionalization of K-12 Ethnic Studies in California Public Schools is the culmination of decades of grassroots community organizing to address inequities between students of color and their advantaged peers. Empirical evidence suggests that K-12 Ethnic Studies courses have positive academic and social outcomes for historically marginalized students, yet limited research documents the pedagogical practices that occur in these courses to develop students' critical consciousness and academic achievement tied to civic and community engagement. Mainstream curricula continue to perpetuate race-neutral pedagogy that does not acknowledge the racialized experiences of students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, making it necessary to …

Esther And The Maccabees: The Creation Of A Hellenist Jewish Heroine, Nolan Lebovitz Jan 2024

Esther And The Maccabees: The Creation Of A Hellenist Jewish Heroine, Nolan Lebovitz

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The Book of Esther maintains many enigmatic qualities when compared against the other books within the canon of the Hebrew Bible. These unique characteristics stretch through its characters, its developed literary style, and the ideology it espouses. Academics often address individual issues in isolation such as its various scriptural forms in Greek and Hebrew, its absence from Qumran, and the many factors considered in its authorship and dating. Scholarly consideration for the book’s authorship spans from the 5 th Century through the 2nd Century BCE. This period in question saw a transition between the Persian Period to the Hellenistic Period, …

Richard Wright, Native Son, And The Rhetorical Framing Of The Black American Experience, Malcolm Oliver Ii Jan 2024

Richard Wright, Native Son, And The Rhetorical Framing Of The Black American Experience, Malcolm Oliver Ii

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation is an exploration into Richard Wright’s rhetorical framing of the black American experience to further understand the impact and influence of language on black Americans within the progression of society. If we revisit 20 th century black American protest literature with a critical view through the lens of Perceivable Rhetoric, my original contribution to the field, we can further understand the messaging and implications within the genre that help us understand why the 21 st century black American experience mirrors much of what was written during the 20 th century. With respect to the aforementioned, Native Son, the …

Do Women Have An Advantage When Leading Across Groups? An Examination Of Gender, Self-Construals, And Intergroup Leadership, Jackie Shaib Jan 2024

Do Women Have An Advantage When Leading Across Groups? An Examination Of Gender, Self-Construals, And Intergroup Leadership, Jackie Shaib

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Intergroup leadership, self-construals, and gender are relatively well researched. However, there has been limited research that has looked at the interplay between these areas of research. For example, past research has shown women’s tendency towards an interdependent self-construal (Cross & Madson, 1997), the various challenges women face in pursuit of leadership roles (Eagly, 1987; Schein, 1973), as well as which style of intergroup leadership is most effective in various scenarios of subgroup relations (Hogg & Rast, 2022; Hogg et al., 2012; Rast et al., 2018). Although real world leadership situations often combine all these phenomena, research has yet to catch …

A Musically Enhanced Self-Inquiry (Mesi) Of Being & Becoming A Validating Agent For Students In Hispanic Serving Institutions And Myself: A Mesi Multimodal Critical Autoethnography, Naomi Ramirez Jan 2024

A Musically Enhanced Self-Inquiry (Mesi) Of Being & Becoming A Validating Agent For Students In Hispanic Serving Institutions And Myself: A Mesi Multimodal Critical Autoethnography, Naomi Ramirez

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Through a musically enhanced self-inquiry (MESI), I reflect on factors and experiences that have impacted the ways in which I think about enact being a validating agent for students at Hispanic Serving Institutions and myself. Validation theory (Rendón, 1994) frames the need for faculty, as acting validating agents, to self- reflect and confront their own biases and assumptions that shape their classroom practices, attitudes, and pedagogy. The MESI methodology that I designed draws from arts-informed methods and methodologies, musically enhanced narrative inquiry, self-inquiry and critical autoethnography. Two forms of analysis are used. The first form of analysis is guided by …

Nurturing Inclusivity And Enhancing Learning Environments: Examining Teachers’ Perspectives On Culturally Responsive Social Emotional Learning, Andrea Perez Jan 2024

Nurturing Inclusivity And Enhancing Learning Environments: Examining Teachers’ Perspectives On Culturally Responsive Social Emotional Learning, Andrea Perez

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) programs and curricula have emerged as a priority in schools over the past three decades, with greater urgency since the COVID-19 pandemic. While SEL programs may show promise in supporting students’ social and emotional needs generally, current SEL practices apply color-evasive approaches, leading to White-centered practices and norms that do not acknowledge the identities and needs of students who identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). In response, scholars have called for Culturally Responsive Social Emotional Learning (CRSEL) programs to support students in acknowledging their cultural strengths, recognizing their funds of knowledge, and feeling …

Attitude Formation & Persuasion Via Reactance: No, You Can't – Yes, I Can!, Daniel Alfred Palafox Jan 2024

Attitude Formation & Persuasion Via Reactance: No, You Can't – Yes, I Can!, Daniel Alfred Palafox

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This study was designed to fill a significant gap in how psychological reactance theory (PRT; Brehm, 1966) is traditionally used in social psychological experiments. This study attempted to show that PRT can be used as a method to induce positive attitude formation. There is a need to understand how motivation to restore freedom (the driving force behind PRT) can be harnessed as a tool to persuade in a manner incongruent to typical persuasion techniques and form evaluations of attitude objects, and how the affective component of PRT can be used as a form of evaluative conditioning. The study consisted of …

Finding Rights In The Fine Print: How Terms Of Services Agreements Can Turn Consumer Search History Into Digital Property, Dalia Wrocherinsky Jan 2024

Finding Rights In The Fine Print: How Terms Of Services Agreements Can Turn Consumer Search History Into Digital Property, Dalia Wrocherinsky

American University Business Law Review

On October 16, 2023, the Colorado Supreme Court handed down the country’s first court opinion on the constitutionality of reverse keyword warrants. It found that Google’s Terms of Service created a Fourth Amendment property interest in a user’s search history such that police copying this data constituted a seizure. This was a completely novel contention that implicates basic, yet increasingly relevant and unsettled principles of property, contracts, and Fourth Amendment law.

This Comment will argue that fundamental principles of property, contracts, and Fourth Amendment law support the Colorado Supreme Court’s theory. It will explore how property rights are created and …

How Economically Marginalized Adolescents Of Color Negotiate Critical Pedagogy In A Computing Classroom, Jean Salac, Lena Armstrong, Megumi Kivuva, Jayne Everson, Amy J. Ko

Computer Science Faculty Work

Background and Context: With the growing movement to adopt critical framings of computing, scholars have worked to reframe computing education from the narrow development of programming skills to skills in identifying and resisting oppressive structures in computing. However, we have little guidance on how these framings may manifest in classroom practice. Objectives: To better understand the processes and practice of critical pedagogy in a computing classrooms, we taught a critically conscious computing elective within a summer academic program at a northwest United States university targeted at secondary students (ages 14–18) from low-income backgrounds and would be the first …
