Empowering Neurodivergence: The Role Of Positive Language In Challenging Systemic Ableism, Piper Hutson, James Hutson Jan 2024

Empowering Neurodivergence: The Role Of Positive Language In Challenging Systemic Ableism, Piper Hutson, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

This review article examines the power of language in shaping perceptions of neurodivergent individuals and the systemic ableism embedded in society. The analysis begins by exploring the historical development of terms like "disabled" and their impact on societal attitudes, focusing on how deficit-based language reinforces exclusion. By contrasting this with strength-based and inclusive language, the article advocates for a shift toward reframing disability in terms of social constructs and accessibility, rather than inherent limitations. Drawing on neuroscientific research, it demonstrates how language shapes neural pathways, reinforcing either stigma or empowerment. The review further critiques euphemisms like "differently abled" for minimizing …

British Translators, Bhagat Singh, And ‘Atheism’: How ‘Reverse Translation’ Alters The Meaning Of Philosophical Concepts, Ruth Vanita

Global Humanities and Religions Faculty Publications

This chapter is a preliminary enquiry into a process for which I have invented the term ‘reverse translation’ since there seems to be no specific term available for it. Reverse translation is the process by which the meaning of a Hindu philosophical concept changes in Indian languages because of a process of incorrect translation to and from English.

Maggot Debridement Therapy Vs. Negative Pressure Wound Therapy And Their Effectiveness On Tissue Healing On Older Adults, Angelica L. Funes

Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research

Chronic ulcers, particularly prevalent in older adults, significantly impact patients' quality of life, leading to prolonged hospital stays and increased healthcare costs. This study explores the efficacy of two common therapies, Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) and Maggot Debridement Therapy (MDT), in promoting tissue healing for chronic ulcers in adults aged 60 and older. A methodical search was conducted using databases such as CINAHL, PubMed, EBSCO, and ProQuest, employing specific search strategies and inclusion/exclusion criteria. Four high-quality Level 1 randomized controlled trials were selected for analysis, comparing NPWT and MDT in various settings. The results indicate that MDT exhibits superior …

Web Application Evaluation & User Experience (Ux), Nicole Edoziem Jan 2024

Web Application Evaluation & User Experience (Ux), Nicole Edoziem

Honors Program Theses

In this thesis, I investigated two input modalities using a concept-building task experiment. I also utilized a Qualtrics survey which had two parts, one with three open-ended questions to gain deeper insights regarding participants’ experience during the experiment. The other section consisted of the NASA-TLX instrument which is used to quantify workload across six subscales: mental demand, physical demand, temporal demand, performance, effort, and frustration. Although not statistically significant, analysis of the data revealed that performance with the keyboard was higher than with the mouse. Mental demand and frustration were also higher with the keyboard. These results aren’t conclusive but …

The Voice Of Reason: The Rhetoric Of Women Politicians In A Polarized U.S. Congress, Ingrid Ryan Jan 2024

The Voice Of Reason: The Rhetoric Of Women Politicians In A Polarized U.S. Congress, Ingrid Ryan

Honors Program Theses

Political rhetoric can be utilized as a divisive tactic in the modern polarized age to separate the Democratic and Republican public in U.S. congressional speeches. Once holding an educational purpose in the 1980s, U.S. House representatives and senators now must focus on their political party’s issue goals to ensure their re-election. This research investigates common political rhetoric tools – while evaluating women politicians’ speeches about abortion, the 2020 U.S. Presidential election, and Donald Trump’s two impeachments – to find if they encourage partisan polarization or anti-democratic behavior. This research focuses on these speeches from U.S. House Representatives Ilhan Omar and …

Exploring The Motivators Of Medical Tourism By Americans, Sebastian Uribe

Honors Program Theses

The purpose of this study was to look at the factors that influence Americans' decisions to engage in medical tourism (going overseas for medical treatment). The research aimed to empirically analyze the key criteria motivating Americans to participate in medical tourism. This involved a comprehensive examination of factors such as cost considerations, waiting times, the availability of procedures, and possible destinations. The study utilized both primary and secondary data. The primary data was collected by the means of a Qualtrics survey, in which a representative US respondent´s sample was used to test the various underlying hypotheses. A mixed-methods approach was …

Public Discourse, User Reactions, And Conspiracy Theories On The X Platform About Hiv Vaccines: Data Mining And Content Analysis, Jueman (Mandy) Zhang, Yi Wang, Magali Mouton, Jixuan Zhang, Molu Shi

Journalism & Public Relations Faculty Publications

Background:

The initiation of clinical trials for messenger RNA (mRNA) HIV vaccines in early 2022 revived public discussion on HIV vaccines after 3 decades of unsuccessful research. These trials followed the success of mRNA technology in COVID-19 vaccines but unfolded amid intense vaccine debates during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is crucial to gain insights into public discourse and reactions about potential new vaccines, and social media platforms such as X (formerly known as Twitter) provide important channels.

Objective:

Drawing from infodemiology and infoveillance research, this study investigated the patterns of public discourse and message-level drivers of user reactions on …

Treechain: Decentralized Tree Management Common Platform, Ho Yin, Angus Law Jan 2024

Treechain: Decentralized Tree Management Common Platform, Ho Yin, Angus Law

School of General Education & Languages (THEi)

In Hong Kong, urban development and aesthetics have often overlooked the importance of proactive tree management. As time passes, the risks associated with trees increase, posing significant safety threats to stakeholders regarding both life and property. While numerous tree management strategies exist worldwide, the critical question remains: are these approaches comprehensive and effective enough to ensure safety and protection? The stagnation of the development of comprehensive tree management can be attributed to underdeveloped tree risk assessment systems and a shortage of qualified professionals willing to commit to the industry's growth. Given these circumstances, haphazard implementation of tree management practices is …

The Watchmen In The Song Of Songs: An Intertextual Study, Gabriel Xavier Del Valle Jan 2024

The Watchmen In The Song Of Songs: An Intertextual Study, Gabriel Xavier Del Valle

Master's Theses

Problem

The watchmen are a shocking feature in the Song of Songs that have received limited exploration and research. Their dual nature in the Song of Songs is illustrated by their two responses to the women in the song; benign indifference illustrated in Song of Songs 3:1-5 and hostility exemplified in Song of Songs 5:2-8. This has led to a myriad of interpretations regarding their function and identity; however, none have been subject to a thorough examination. The watchmen have not been previously investigated as a potential metaphorical or symbolic representation of the brothers related to the woman in the …

Predicting Waste Management Behaviors Using An Extended Theory Of Reasoned Action Model, Alvin Patrick M. Valentin, Phoemela Bianca S.D. Bonifacio, Sofia Isabelle Corinne O. Castro, Jerica Charity A. Cruz, Talisha Isabelle L. Sy, Elmer Lewis O. Trinidad

Quantitative Methods and Information Technology Faculty Publications

Rapid urbanization has resulted in a significant increase in the amount of waste generated, which threatens the health and safety of millions of people worldwide. For our cities to become environmentally sustainable, proper waste management has become essential. A major source of pollution resulting from improper waste management are developing countries, such as the Philippines which is a top contributor to plastic wastes in oceans. Existing studies in this context focus on the effectiveness of specific waste management programs, and there is an opportunity to extend theories to improve our understanding of the waste management behaviors of households. Using an …

Several studies have emphasized the necessity of enhancing pre-service teachers' technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) (Niess, 2011; Baran, 2019). However, the contribution of teacher educators to the development of teacher candidates' abilities to teach computational and digital literacies remains insufficiently explored. To do this, we examined teacher education faculty's beliefs and values concerning the integration of computing and digital literacy (CDL) in classrooms. Based on interviews with 32 faculty, we identified themes including how CDL can support disciplinary learning and challenges for implementing CDL into teacher education. We discuss the significance of this work for teacher education.

Lds Perspectives On The Atonement?, Blake T. Ostler Jan 2024

Lds Perspectives On The Atonement?, Blake T. Ostler

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Latter-day Saint Perspectives on Atonement promises to provide new perspectives on the atonement that reflect awareness of scriptural and theological scholarship. The essays on the scriptural background are solid. The essays providing theological perspectives are uneven, at best. Indeed, the theological essays show little awareness of the major works in philosophical theology in the last sixty years—with one notable exception. Moreover, a feminist perspective that argues against seeing Christ’s blood that he shed as an appropriate basis for atonement theory receives the greatest attention. This review elucidates, explores, assesses, and critiques these approaches.

Did Korihor Usurp The Words Of Zeniff?, Elliott Jolley Jan 2024

Did Korihor Usurp The Words Of Zeniff?, Elliott Jolley

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The Book of Mormon contains several instances where a speaker or author in the Book of Mormon quotes a previous one. This article presents one such example: It appears that Korihor usurped the words of Zeniff, quoting some of them for his own purposes. The context of this reference to Zeniff’s words lies in Korihor’s claims that the Nephites were in bondage to the priests, just as the Lamanites wanted to bring Zeniff’s people into bondage. The connections between these two passages cross multiple generations and narrative events internally, and multiple pages of translated, dictated manuscript by Joseph Smith. It …

A Model For Looking Deeply And Deeply Looking, Godfrey J. Ellis Jan 2024

A Model For Looking Deeply And Deeply Looking, Godfrey J. Ellis

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Peter Williams, an independent biblical scholar, has written an analysis of the parable of the prodigal son in a fascinating attempt to demonstrate two truths. The first is that one of the most overlooked attributes of the Savior is his brilliant and analytical mind. In the process, Williams reveals many intricacies hidden in the parable. He also reminds readers of the role of the Old Testament in the understanding and appreciation of the teachings of Jesus. These contributions, by themselves, demonstrate the value of the book. The second truth is that Jesus, himself, and not the gospel writers or the …

More Evidence For Alma As A Semitic Name, Neal Rappleye, Allen Hansen Jan 2024

More Evidence For Alma As A Semitic Name, Neal Rappleye, Allen Hansen

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Beginning with Hugh Nibley, several Latter-day Saint scholars have highlighted a deed found among the Bar Kokhba documents as evidence of the name Alma as a Jewish male name in antiquity. Here we highlight a second attestation of the same name used for a Jewish male from a slightly earlier period, as well as other evidence from Hebrew toponymy that helps corroborate not only that Alma is a Hebrew name, but also supports the etymology proposed by Latter-day Saint scholars and is suggestive of wordplays previously identified in the Book of Mormon text. Past critics have mocked the name Alma …

“That They May Know That They Are Not Cast Off Forever”: Jewish Lectionary Elements In The Book Of Mormon, Bradley J. Kramer

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

It is not uncommon for Jews who join The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to notice connections between certain events in the Book of Mormon and modern Jewish practices associated with the feasts of Passover, Weeks, Tabernacles, and Rosh Hashanah. Aware that traditional Christianity holds not only that Jews were ousted from God’s covenant but that Jewish traditions in support of that covenant are spiritually worthless, these Jews find great comfort in these connections as well as in Book of Mormon statements that affirm their continued inclusion in that covenant. But aren’t there also connections to the modern …
