Remembering East Frisian Immigrants Who Settled Near German Valley, Illinois: A Family History Scrapbook, Derek M. Heeren

Genealogy Resources

In June of 1848, Jelle Heeren (age 25) married Taalke Park (age 15) near Rhauderfhen, East Friesland (German: Ostfriesland). One year later, on September 10, along with their infant son, they left everything that was familiar to them in Germany. Based on glowing reports of good opportunities for farming and raising a family on the American frontier, they set sail for the United States. After what must have been a traumatic voyage (including the death of their son), they entered the United States at New York City. Continuing onward, they arrived at a new East Frisian settlement in Illinois (later …

NJF Islamic University Journal

The majority of the notable individuals from the early Islamic era who had a major impact on the development of Muslim history have been the subject of in-depth research and analysis by Western academics. Scholars, Orientalists, and others are aware of the significant effects these studies have had on the Islamic country over the centuries, both positive and negative. These researchers made advantage of the resources at their disposal to collect data, making sure that their conclusions were not restricted to societies, libraries, and museums. Saving Ourselves From Infection: A Theraputic Model Of Peer Led Education, Jessica Tkacs Way

West Chester University Master’s Theses

The purpose of this action research is to explore non-hierarchical peer led education as a means to end the Hepatitis C epidemic, promote empowerment and self-esteem in current injection drug users, and create a more global understanding of power structures that perpetuate opioid use so that those living with addiction are better able to educate, organize and fight for structural change. The current healthcare system is not able to test, treat or educate those most at risk for Hepatitis C infection or reinfection - people who inject drugs. The United States is currently in a losing battle with opioid addiction, …

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

The wording of self-report instruments likely affects its responses; however, there has been very little inquiry into the topic. The purpose of this study was to examine how items in a sexual assault experiences questionnaire varied based on pronouns (first person or second person) and order (sexual-behavior or coercive-tactic first) affected responses. College students (N = 979) were randomly assigned in a 2 by 2 between-subjects experiment to experimental versions of the Sexual Experiences Survey (SES). The findings indicated that the condition with second-person pronouns and coercive-tactic first phrasing had the highest rate of disclosure. Based on reading time …

Comparative Study: Critical Thinking Skills Of Western Philosophy Versus Non-Western Philosophy Students, Jhansi Chagalakonda

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The number of non-western students migrating to western countries for higher education is increasing every year. They suffer from stereotypes and often perceived as non-critical thinkers. However, it is not the lack of critical thinking skills, rather it is the lack of understanding of the different approaches and different styles of practicing critical thinking skills by non-western learners. The purpose of this qualitative study was to compare the perception of critical thinking skills of students who studied Indian philosophy with those who studied western philosophy, and to understand the commonalities and differences in students thinking processes and the approaches adopted …

Crawford At 20: An Introduction To The Symposium, Richard D. Friedman

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

The twentieth anniversary of Crawford v. Washington provides an ideal opportunity to reflect on the right of a criminal defendant to be confronted with the witnesses against him – on its origins and recent developments, current issues that it presents, paths that it may take, and other changes that it may generate. I am grateful to the Journal of Law Reform for organizing this symposium and to all the participants for having made it a success. In Section 1 of this introductory essay, I offer some comments on the origins, scope, and purpose of the confrontation right. Section 2 discusses …

Hurricane Risk Perceptions And Evacuation Decision-Making In The Postvaccine Era Of Covid-19 In U.S. Coastal States Impacted By North Atlantic Hurricanes, Jennifer Collins, Elizabeth A. Dunn, Rashida K. Jones, Amy Polen, Nagashree R. Rao, Stephen Murphy, Mark Welford

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

During peak disease transmission in 2021, the compounding threat posed by the pandemic and hurricane season required coastal states to understand evacuation behaviors during a major hurricane to inform the planning process. While research relating to hurricane evacuation behavior and perceptions of risk has increased since the start of the pandemic, there is minimal understanding of how perceptions have changed now the COVID-19 vaccine is available. A total of 1075 individuals across seven U.S. coastal states participated in a study on evacuation intentions postvaccine availability. Findings revealed that most survey participants (50.9%) preferred to stay home if a major hurricane …

Dystopian Young Adult Literature As Waypoints To Censorship Across Time And Space, Shelby Boehm, Savannah Bean Jan 2024

Dystopian Young Adult Literature As Waypoints To Censorship Across Time And Space, Shelby Boehm, Savannah Bean

Faculty Publications – English

We advocate for the reading of young adult literature (YAL) as a means for justice-oriented education, and we also recognize how the recent surge in challenges to youth-centered texts in the U.S. attempts to limit such work in classrooms. In response, we wondered about the ways in which YAL offers pathways for critically framing and situating global concerns, such as censorship, in time and space as a means of entering public conversations on issues. In this article, we offer waypoints as a critical reading framework for approaching sociopolitical issues in YAL as gateways for shifts in perspectives, orientations, and actions …

Structure, Status, And Span: Gender Differences In Co-Authorship Networks Across 16 Region-Subject Pairs (2009–2013), Kjersten Bunker Whittington, Molly M. King, Isabella Cingolani

Sociology

Global and team science approaches are on the rise, as is attention to the network underpinnings of gender disparities in scientific collaboration. Many network studies of men’s and women’s collaboration rely on bounded case studies of single disciplines and/or single countries and limited measures related to the collaborative process. We deploy network analysis on the scholarly database Scopus to gain insight into gender inequity across regions and subject areas and to better understand contextual underpinnings of stagnancy. Using a dataset of over 1.2 million authors and 144 million collaborative relationships, we capture international and unbounded co-authorship networks that include intra- …

Public Services Faculty Publications

This case study explores the use of programmatic instruction as library instruction training for MLIS students employed at a university reference desk. This study has three primary aims. First, it endeavors to outline how programmatic one-shot instruction sessions, taught primarily for 100-level courses, can be used to provide MLIS students with an introduction to information literacy instruction. By examining longstanding programmatic instruction at the University of Rhode Island, we provide examples of how this model has evolved over decades in response to changes in staffing, budgets, and the information needs of academic departments. Second, this case study shares the perspectives …

Scaffolding The Academic Writing Process, Jennifer Browdy

GHEA21 Open Educational Resources

In the AI age, it is essential to break down writing assignments into stages that can be assessed individually, so that as teachers we have an opportunity to intervene early if we see students getting off track in any way. This LAS Guide presentation will unpack the scaffolding necessary to guide students in producing high-quality writing in the humanities based on textual analysis, including: • Individual close reading and collaborative note-taking • In-class discussion techniques that require careful listening • Crafting both open-ended discussion questions and research questions • Research-based oral presentations • Collaborative and individual draft work, from response …

"A Liberal Arts Guide To Academic Writing In The Age Of Ai: Crafting Meaning, Empowering Students ", Tara Keenan

GHEA21 Open Educational Resources

The advent of generative Artificial Intelligence (genAI) and large language models (LLMs) will require a sea change in how and what we teach students of all levels. Research strongly suggests that most university students are regularly using these in our courses, so it is incumbent on us to establish norms and best practices regarding their use, ethics, and literacy. This strengthening guide provides modular lesson plans for an advanced university-level English Composition course that focuses on the teaching of critical reading and writing as well as information literacy. This guide provides (i) practical lessons that address genAI and LLMs and …

Strengthening Foundational Learning In The Asean Region: A Review Of Promising Practices, Yung Nietschke, Adeola Monty, Anna Dabrowski, Payal Goundar, Syeda Kashfee Ahmed, Debbie Wong, Jeaniene Spink

International Education Research

In the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region, there is a learning crisis. Children from the most marginalised groups face insurmountable barriers to accessing a quality education, while many of those who are in school are not learning. Foundational learning is often described as the essential skills and knowledge that serve as the basis for further learning and development, and includes basic literacy (reading and writing) and numeracy (mathematics), and more recently, a focus on critical thinking, problem-solving, and socioemotional skills. In collaboration, ASEAN and the United Kingdom have established the Supporting the Advancement of Girls' Education (SAGE) Programme …

Impossibility Of Artificial Inventors, Matt Blaszczyk Jan 2024

Impossibility Of Artificial Inventors, Matt Blaszczyk

Fellow, Adjunct, Lecturer, and Research Scholar Works

Recently, the United Kingdom Supreme Court decided that only natural persons can be considered inventors. A year before, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit issued a similar decision. In fact, so have many the courts all over the world. This Article analyses these decisions, argues that the courts got it right, and finds that artificial inventorship is at odds with patent law doctrine, theory, and philosophy. The Article challenges the intellectual property (IP) post-humanists, exposing the analytical and normative perils of their argumentation, and recommends against getting rid of the nominally central place of humans in …
