Online Education, Honors, And The Engaged University: Modeling Experiential Learning For Fully Online Students At Fort Hays State University, Kevin S. Amidon, Gregory Atkins

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

This essay outlines the principles upon which the Fort Hays State University Honors Online initiative will be based and proposes ways of achieving successful honors outcomes in student-centered ways that are appropriate and meaningful to both on-campus and online cohorts. We propose a structure guided by a Community of Inquiry (COI) framework that respects and reflects the social, cognitive, and academic needs of diverse students as individuals and groups. This results in a concentric curricular model in which the student’s academic major field provides a broad, encompassing space for inner fields of co-curricular experiential learning and service. Honors staff work …

Rhizophora Mangle (Red Mangrove) Seedling Success In Different Habitats In Mosquito Lagoon, Florida, Usa, Mekail N. Negash

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

Mangroves provide many ecosystem services in coastal environments around the world. These include water quality improvement, creating habitats for terrestrial and aquatic species, and stabilizing shorelines. In central Florida, the red mangrove Rhizophora mangle is a common species in coastal wetlands, and recently the number of individuals successfully recruiting to intertidal oyster reefs has greatly increased, possibly because biogeochemical hot spots are present on oyster reefs due to nutrient-rich biodeposits from the live oysters. To understand how well R. mangle responds in terms of survival and growth to the suite of variables associated within these two unique habitats, I tracked …

Adaptation To Hypoxia And Nitrate/Nitrite Assimilation Require Species-Specific Regulation By Dosr And Nnar In Mycobacterium Abscessus, Breven S. Simcox

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

Mycobacterium abscessus (Mab) is an opportunistic pathogen afflicting immunocompromised patients and individuals with underlying comordibities such as Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Treatment strategies are limited due to inherent antibiotic resistance and restricted accessibility of Mab to antibiotics within macrophage phagosomes, granuloma lesions, and the mucus laden CF airways. Transcriptional adaptation to stresses encountered in these niches such as hypoxia, reactive nitrogen intermediates (RNI) and elevated nitrate and nitrite are not well-understood. In Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) hypoxia adaptation and nitrate metabolism are linked via induction of the two-component system (TCS) DosRS and nitrate metabolism genes. DosRSMtb induces …

Is This The Real Life, Or Is This Just Fantasy? Assessing Species Distribution Model Realism And Applicability With Virtual And Empirical Species, Hannah R. Bevan Jan 2024

Is This The Real Life, Or Is This Just Fantasy? Assessing Species Distribution Model Realism And Applicability With Virtual And Empirical Species, Hannah R. Bevan

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

Species distribution models (SDMs) can be important tools for proactive conservation management if they are realistic. Unfortunately, achieving and assessing SDM realism is challenging given the general limitations of scientific models and empirical species data. We addressed the issue of achieving realism with high model quality and reproducibility by reviewing 200 SDMs and cataloguing methods for data availability, response and predictor variables, model fitting, and model performance. We addressed the issue of assessing SDM realism by comparing known and predicted distributions of habitat suitability with simulated data for various model fitting choices. Finally, we applied and compared subsequent lessons to …

Breaking Molds: Transformative Processes In Art Making, Materials, And Life, James M. Wysolmierski

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

Drawing upon traumatic moments of my past as a catalyst, I pursue understanding and acceptance of physical and emotional pain. In this thesis body of work, I employ the intersection of industrial and body imagery in sculptural forms and installation as a corporeal and allegorical account of my lived experience using visual narratives of trepidation and metamorphosis. In my creative practice, I incorporate various materials that create a reference of specific moments from my past. The artworks draw from principles rooted in Buddhism, affect theory, phenomenology, and materiality; incorporating them as tools to comprehend my position in the world and …

Historical Reappearance: Tracing The Impacts Of Argentina's Los Desaparecidos To The Rise Of President Javier Milei, Analise Sofia Chain Jan 2024

Historical Reappearance: Tracing The Impacts Of Argentina's Los Desaparecidos To The Rise Of President Javier Milei, Analise Sofia Chain

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In 1976 the Argentine government was taken over by a right wing military junta, attempting to “save” their country from communism. Military officials kidnapped, tortured and killed between 10,000 and 30,000 Argentine citizens, who were thought of as “guerrillas” supporting the leftist government and the late president Juan Perón. These victims are regarded as the disappeared, or Los Desaparecidos; due to the fact their families had no knowledge of where their loved ones were taken, or what was happening to them. Many of these young, liberal advocates were never seen or heard from again, their remains lost to history, and …

This scoping review highlighted themes related to confidence, self-reflection, generalizability, and authenticity. This review will inform a capstone project that will focus on developing leadership skills …

Breach Of Faith: The Special Problem Of Osha Performance Standards, Marshall J. Breger, Arthur G. Sapper Jan 2024

Breach Of Faith: The Special Problem Of Osha Performance Standards, Marshall J. Breger, Arthur G. Sapper

Scholarly Articles

This Article focuses on a special problem with performance standards - that their performance criteria are often so subjective as to deny regulated persons a clear idea of what is required. It begins with a discussion of specification and performance standards in American regulatory history. It further discusses attempts by Congress and others to, therefore, require that performance criteria be “objective.” The Article then sets out a case study of how congressional attempts to require “objective” performance criteria have fared. It examines in depth whether one agency, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), has complied with that special requirement …

Freedom To Give, Devise, And Bequeath, Raymond C. O'Brien

Scholarly Articles

The ability to freely give, devise, or bequeath property is commonly thwarted by persons granted standing to contest formalities and intentionalities of wills, tortious interference with an expectancy, and expanding concern over intervivos gifts and trusts due to increasing elder financial abuse. Nonetheless, there is an expanding class of older, wealthy, and independent-minded donors who seek an effective means by which they may give their wealth to whomever they wish and bypass expensive legal fees, protracted litigation, loss of privacy, and the emotional drama of court proceedings. This Article offers a suggestion of how to restrict the possibility of contest …

The Effects Of Daily Magnesium Citrate Supplementationon Grip Strength, Carolina Cano, Holly King Jan 2024

The Effects Of Daily Magnesium Citrate Supplementationon Grip Strength, Carolina Cano, Holly King

Loma Linda University Research Reports

Magnesium (Mg) is thought to play an essential role in physical strength because it catalyzes more than 300 enzymatic reactions involved in energy metabolism and cell growth. Magnesium also aids in the hydrolysis of ATP in glycolysis, acting as a coenzyme in three critical reactions and in crossbridge formation in the muscle contraction cycle. Despite these roles, approximately 60% of the US adult population does not meet the RDA for Mg. Previous studies found inconsistent results on the effects of Mg on physical performance. However, most studies agreed on magnesium's potential as an ergogenic aid.

Key Success Factors Of Strategic Transformation For Sino-French Cooperation In The Development Of Third-Party Markets In Africa, Bin Wang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The most popular form of third-party market cooperation is an innovative international economic and trade cooperation model initiated by China under the context of the “Belt and Road” initiative nowadays. Although China and France, as non-state actors, have actively promoted trilateral cooperation and improved various agreements, the trilateral countries have not achieved effective resource complementarity due to differences in political and economic systems and goals, resulting in high complexity in the cooperation process.

Therefore, the research topic of this study is dedicated to addressing this pain point and assisting Chinese enterprises in leveraging third-party markets to expand overseas business under …

The Lost History Of Judicial Restraint, Derek A. Webb Jan 2024

The Lost History Of Judicial Restraint, Derek A. Webb

Scholarly Articles

For over 125 years, jurists and scholars who have championed judicial restraint have looked back to James Bradley Thayer’s 1893 Harvard Law Review article, The Origin and Scope of the American Doctrine of Constitutional Law, as the seminal authority for the rule that courts should presume the constitutionality of a challenged law and only invalidate it if its unconstitutionality is “clear” and “beyond a reasonable doubt.” But Thayer presented those three rules (presumption of constitutionality, clear error rule, and reasonable doubt standard) as rooted in historical legal practice in America. And yet none of his twentieth or twenty-first century acolytes …
