It’S Elementary? Let’S Play Rock, Paper, Scissors: Civil Procedure, Property, Contracts, And Torts During First-Year Law School Orientation, Jean Steadman, Aleatra Alexander, Constance Anastopoulo, William Janssen

University of Memphis Law Review

Civil Procedure, Property, Contracts, and Torts are all standard first-year doctrinal law school courses. They provide law students with a solid legal foundation and expose them to American rule-based and precedent-based law. The first year of law school is also often a student’s first introduction to these legal subjects. First-year law students often fail to realize how the material taught in each of these classes complements what they are learning in the other classes. Students focus on learning the material and professors focus on transmitting the information in a comprehensible manner. First-year orientation can be an opportunity to introduce doctrinal …

Models Of Information Diffusion And The Role Of Influence, Chathura Jj Don Dimungu Arachchige Jan 2024

Models Of Information Diffusion And The Role Of Influence, Chathura Jj Don Dimungu Arachchige

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

Information diffusion is significant in fields such as propagation prediction and influence maximization, with applications in viral marketing and rumor control. Despite conceptual differences, existing diffusion models may not represent identical underlying generative structures. A classification of diffusion of information models is developed based on infection requirements and stochasticity. The study involves analyzing seven existing DOI models on directed scale-free networks. The distinctive properties of each model are identified through simulations and analysis of experimental results. Our analysis reveals that similarity in conceptual design does not imply similarity in behavior concerning speed, the final state of nodes and edges, and …

The Intersection Of Kinesthetic Empathy And Observation In Concert Dance Performance, Kate Walker Jan 2024

The Intersection Of Kinesthetic Empathy And Observation In Concert Dance Performance, Kate Walker

Gaines Fellow Senior Theses

When watching concert dance, observers unconsciously process movement information by forming reflections of their own experiences, resulting in an emotional connection. The artist, however, also has a part in forming meaning around something they create. If meaning is formed in the creation of the work by the artist, and also through observation by an audience, where does meaning reside? The relationship shared between the artist and their audience is valuable, so something must connect these two groups. An artist’s job is to suggest meaning through their work, but once the piece is subject to observation, the process of kinesthetic empathy …

Personal Narratives As Mechanisms To Explore The Stem Undergraduate Research Experience, Isha Chauhan Jan 2024

Personal Narratives As Mechanisms To Explore The Stem Undergraduate Research Experience, Isha Chauhan

Gaines Fellow Senior Theses

STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) has popularly been labeled as reliant on objective analysis, while, conversely, humanities are rooted in engaging human virtue and creating connections between people. A particularly interesting piece of the humanities is storytelling, which allows people of unique backgrounds to develop creative connections to their work. In this way, STEM and the humanities are united by personal experience and the ability to convey such. This connection can be demonstrated through the STEM undergraduate experience, which has been greatly underrepresented in the form of personal narratives. With the format of personal narratives being conducive to discussion …

The Relationship Between Low Self-Control And Life Goals Over The Life Course, Margaryta Munday

Theses and Dissertations--Family Sciences

The present study aimed to test the relationships between low self-control and five different measures of life goals (educational, career, personal, relationship, and health) as well as the relationship between low self-control and the amount of commitment and progress made towards each of these goals across developmental periods (18-25, 26-35, 36-45, 46-55, 56+ years old). It was expected that low self-control would be negatively associated with life goals across all domains as well as with both measures of commitment and progress towards each. No differences in these links were expected across developmental periods or by sex. Data were collected from …

Repurposing The United Nations Trusteeship Council To Govern The Establishment Of Outer Space Settlements, Andrew Wulf Jan 2024

Repurposing The United Nations Trusteeship Council To Govern The Establishment Of Outer Space Settlements, Andrew Wulf

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

Current existing international law and treaties on outer space do not address or regulate private actors’ property claims or human settlements in outer space. American companies such as SpaceX and Blue Origin, as well as countries like the United States, Russia, and China, are seeking to create colonies on the Moon and Mars. However, there is no international legal authority to allow or regulate this. In order to legitimize and control this impending outgrowth of human settlements, this paper proposes that the U.N. Trusteeship Council be repurposed to govern non-state actors’ claims of outer space property.

First, this paper explains …

Dynamic Prediction Of Shared Micromobility Usage With Multi-Task Learning, Yujie Guo, Ying Chen, Yu Zhang Jan 2024

Dynamic Prediction Of Shared Micromobility Usage With Multi-Task Learning, Yujie Guo, Ying Chen, Yu Zhang

Research Reports

Taxis and Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) are important components of the urban transportation system. An accurate short-term forecast of passenger demand can help operators better allocate taxi or TNC services to achieve supply–demand balance in real time. As a result, drivers can improve the efficiency of passenger pick-ups, thereby reducing traffic congestion and contributing to the overall sustainability of the program. Previous research has proposed sophisticated machine learning and neural-network-based models to predict the short-term demand for taxi or TNC services. However, few of them jointly consider both modes, even though the short-term demand for taxis and TNCs is closely …

The Legacy Of The Troubles: Casting A Long Shadow Over Northern Ireland, Jacqueline M. Nolan-Haley Jan 2024

The Legacy Of The Troubles: Casting A Long Shadow Over Northern Ireland, Jacqueline M. Nolan-Haley

Faculty Scholarship

The Good Friday/Belfast Agreement (Agreement) brought hope to Northern Ireland after thirty years of violent conflict during a period known as the Troubles (1968 - 1998). The Agreement offered a framework for ending the conflict and for addressing the needs of victims. However, unlike peace agreements from many other post-conflict societies, it did not provide a transitional justice process for dealing with contentious issues of the past. As a result, more than 25 years after the signing of the Agreement, the problematic legacy of the conflict continues. Paramilitaries are still a cause for concern. Peace walls still exist. Competing sectarian …

Pitzer Senior Theses

This thesis analyzes the current state of High-Speed Rail (HSR) development within the United States and the reasoning behind its historical failure. Through frameworks such as funding and organizational structure of public or private entities (or both), this paper focuses on three case studies: The Northeast Corridor Improvement Project, Florida’s Brightline, and the California High-Speed Rail Project. With an additional scope of organizational studies, this thesis assesses the current state of HSR within the U.S. and considers approaches that could work best, given well-documented hindrances. Although originally hypothesized that a public-private partnership would be the most successful strategy for U.S. …

Climate Change And Its Hidden Victims: A Review Of The Link Between Climate Change Impacts And Sexual And Gender-Based Violence In East Africa, Ezinwa Osuoha

Public Health Theses

Introduction: Climate change is having profound and disproportionate impacts on East Africa. Rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall patterns, and prolonged droughts have become prevalent, leading to profound humanitarian challenges. The effects of climate change in East Africa span beyond those related to agriculture, food insecurity, and economic well-being. Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) is only proliferated in the climate change context. In the event of natural disasters, sexual and gender-based violence increases in tandem with the increase in vulnerability and instability in affected communities. Due to its myriad health consequences, SGBV requires the attention of public health professionals, policymakers, and those …
