No Limits: The Inside Story Of China’S War With The West, Thomas F. Lynch Jun 2024

No Limits: The Inside Story Of China’S War With The West, Thomas F. Lynch

Joint Force Quarterly

No Limits: The Inside Story of China’s War With the West is a valuable book. It is simultaneously analytical and personal. No Limits is an incisive, selective history about how the promise of China’s integration into Western economic systems and global institutions gave way to acrimony and rivalry. It also is author Andrew Small’s memoir about how his quarter-century-long iterative interactions with China evolved from hope and cautious optimism about Sino-global integration into resigned fatalism that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) can never tolerate such a happy ending. The CCP must instead view itself as perpetual victim and implacable rival …

Airpower In The War Against Isis, Charles J. Dunlap Jun 2024

Airpower In The War Against Isis, Charles J. Dunlap

Joint Force Quarterly

In Airpower in the War Against ISIS, Benjamin Lambeth not only weaves an account that celebrates the decisive role he insists airpower played in the defeat of the so-called Islamic State (IS) but also depicts tragically missed opportunities and almost incomprehensibly poor judgment on the part of U.S. civilian and military leaders that unnecessarily delayed that defeat.

Converting A Political- To A Military-Strategic Objective, Milan Vego Jun 2024

Converting A Political- To A Military-Strategic Objective, Milan Vego

Joint Force Quarterly

Political objectives are usually achieved by using one’s military power. Converting political objectives into achievable military-strategic objectives is the primary responsibility of military-strategic leadership. This process is largely an art rather than a science. There are many potential pitfalls because much depends on the knowledge, understanding, experience, and judgment of military-strategic leaders. Most often, mistakes made are only recognized after setbacks or defeats suffered during the hostilities. Despite its critical importance, there is no consensus on the steps and methods in converting political- into military-strategic objectives. There is scant writing on the subject in either doctrinal documents or professional journals.

Navigating The Unintended Consequences Of Language, Imagery, And Meaning Has Never Been More Difficult Or More Important, Jon Brown Jun 2024

Navigating The Unintended Consequences Of Language, Imagery, And Meaning Has Never Been More Difficult Or More Important, Jon Brown

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Words matter. The imagery we use matters. When we tell the wrong story (or the right story in the wrong way), it damages us as organizations, damages us as a sector, and, most importantly of all, causes distant but lasting harm to the very communities we exist to serve and of which we are a part of. Let’s be clear: we at Mines Advisory Group (MAG) are certainly as guilty as the rest of the sector in getting things wrong, but we are putting steps in place to try to get it right.

The world has moved on from the …

What Can Artificial Intelligence Offer Humanitarian Mine Action?, Russell Gasser Ph.D. Jun 2024

What Can Artificial Intelligence Offer Humanitarian Mine Action?, Russell Gasser Ph.D.

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Would you walk on land declared safe by an unproven technology, developed by enthusiastic proponents who do not have long experience in the world of mine action? What if the system for locating hazards will be tested in only one or two trials, even though the type of machine learning system they are using is known to sometimes give false but completely plausible results (so-called hallucinations1)? Furthermore, in the proposed machine-learning system there will be no audit trail for analysis if a serious error occurs, and no way of knowing for sure how to prevent its repetition.

There is dangerously …

Crisis In The Classroom: The Rise Of Book Bans Threatening American Youth, Kris Barrios Jun 2024

Crisis In The Classroom: The Rise Of Book Bans Threatening American Youth, Kris Barrios

Florida Atlantic University Undergraduate Law Journal

Inspired by the experiences of his father as a Polish Jew during the reign of Adolf Hitler, author Art Spiegelman wrote Maus to memorialize the lives of Holocaust survivors. However, multiple state governments have attempted to limit American youth’s access to Maus and other classic literature by pulling books from classroom shelves.1 According to PEN America, over 5,000 books have been banned in the United States in the last two years, with more than half of these bans targeting young adult literature.2 The most commonly objected themes in these books were depictions of violence, the discussion of racism, and the …

Factors Influencing Outcomes Of Undergraduate Nursing Student's Education, Patricia Jenkins Barnard Jun 2024

Factors Influencing Outcomes Of Undergraduate Nursing Student's Education, Patricia Jenkins Barnard

Dissertations

In 2021, approximately 509,000 undergraduate nursing students graduated from baccalaureate nursing educational programs. These new registered nurses (RNs) faced the same adversities as prior generations, including feeling unprepared to practice nursing, personal expectations did not match the reality of the situation, and working in an unwelcoming environment exacerbated by COVID-19 changes. During the time of COVID-19 changes in classroom delivery and settings brought these issues to the forefront (Dewart, 2020; IOM, 2010; NLN, 2015). There is a lack of information about nursing education modalities and their efficacy. Preliminary review documented that there was no clear evidence of which teaching modalities …

Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Ephrin-B-EphB signaling can promote pain through ligand-receptor interactions between peripheral cells, like immune cells expressing ephrin-Bs, and EphB receptors expressed by DRG neurons. Previous studies have shown increased ephrin-B2 expression in peripheral tissues like synovium of rheumatoid and osteoarthritis patients, indicating the clinical significance of this signaling. The primary goal of this study was to understand how ephrin-B2 acts on mouse and human DRG neurons, which express EphB receptors, to promote pain and nociceptor plasticity. We hypothesized that ephrin-B2 would promote nociceptor plasticity and hyperalgesic priming through MNK-eIF4E signaling, a critical mechanism for nociceptive plasticity induced by growth factors, cytokines …

Are Exit Taxes Discriminatory?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah Jun 2024

Are Exit Taxes Discriminatory?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

In a recent column, Tax Notes’ Robert Goulder analyzed case law in Europe on the constitutionality of exit taxes. Many EU member states impose exit taxes on individual residents who move to lower-tax jurisdictions, but the Court of Justice of the European Union has repeatedly struck them down as inconsistent with freedom of movement unless they allow for deferral until realization or death with no interest charge, which is equivalent to having no exit tax at all. Goulder cogently argues that this issue is similar to the Moore problem in the United States, especially since the U.S. exit tax on …

Beyond The Company Carpool: Disadvantage And Informal Automobile Sharing Within And Between U.S. Households, Julene Paul Jun 2024

Beyond The Company Carpool: Disadvantage And Informal Automobile Sharing Within And Between U.S. Households, Julene Paul

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Planners increasingly recognize connections between traveler constraints, automobile access, and travel behavior. The limited ability to travel via car—for economic or other reasons—greatly reduces mobility for many Americans, who overwhelmingly rely on automobiles for access. Yet public policy efforts to reduce excessive automobile travel often prioritize public transit, ignoring the high rates of private automobile sharing among U.S. travelers. Relatedly, few researchers have studied informal sharing and its relationship with traveler disadvantage, particularly for noncommute trips. To address this research gap, I analyze U.S. trip diary data from 2017. I use multinomial probit modeling to explore the relationship between disadvantage …

Russian Verbs Of Motion: Analyzing Pedagogical Approaches And Developing A Handbook For Russian Language Learners, Elena Petrova Jun 2024

Russian Verbs Of Motion: Analyzing Pedagogical Approaches And Developing A Handbook For Russian Language Learners, Elena Petrova

Theses and Dissertations

Motion is an indispensable part of human life, and it is important to be able to talk about motion verbally. However, different languages encode motion differently, and, therefore, the acquisition of this aspect can be challenging. It can be especially difficult for English-speaking Russian language learners because Russian Verbs of Motion function differently from those in the English language. Verbs of Motion in Russian include eight basic verb pairs based on the directionality of movement, e.g. идти/ходить (to go). The study analyzes four pedagogical materials on Verbs of Motion and explores how authors present this topic to Russian language learners. …

Narrative Reflection In Collaborative Composition: A Facilitated Approach To Group Processing In Middle Grades, Gretchen M. Dodson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study was situated at Mountain Middle School (Pseudonym). Students at Mountain Middle School often engage in collaborative compositions embedded within week-long multidisciplinary and multiage units of study called Odysseys. These units of study and the collaborative composition projects are classified as formal cooperative learning. Johnson et al., (2010) identified five elements that make cooperative learning effective. These effective elements are: “positive interdependence, individual accountability, promotive interaction, appropriate use of social skills, and group processing” (Johnson et al., 2010, p. 1). The teachers currently design collaborative learning experiences emphasizing four of the five elements of cooperative learning. Together, we identified …

INTRODUCTION: Revision lumbar fusion is most commonly due to nonunion, adjacent segment disease (ASD), or recurrent stenosis, but it is unclear if diagnosis affects patient outcomes. The primary aim of this study was to assess whether patients achieved the patient acceptable symptom state (PASS) or minimal clinically important difference (MCID) after revision lumbar fusion and assess whether this was influenced by the indication for revision.

METHODS: We retrospectively identified all 1-3 level revision lumbar fusions at a single institution. Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) was collected at preoperative, three-month postoperative, and one-year postoperative time points. The MCID was calculated using a …

Gender Role Depictions In Arabic Children’S Picture Books, Aljawharah A. Almuqbil

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study aimed to explore gender role depictions in children's Arabic picture books. The importance of this study emerged from its focus on young children, where the concept of gender begins to be constructed. This study provided insight into the nature of gender roles in children’s picture books, especially under the remarkable changes that Saudi society is witnessing and the lack of Arab studies in this area. Social cognitive theory, gender schema theory, and critical literacy pedagogy guided the study. A sample of 26 picture books was selected from the Child Book Club at King Abdulaziz Public Library and analyzed …

This second edition is composed of a set of sixteen laboratory investigations which allow the student to explore rich and diverse ideas and concepts in mathematics. The approach is hands-on and experimental, an approach that is very much in the spirit of modern pedagogy. The course is typically offered in one semester, at the sophomore (second year) level of college. It requires prior exposure to calculus and provides a transition to the study of higher, abstract mathematics. Most of the laboratories require the use of a computer for experimentation, but the text is written independent of any particular software.

Kicking The Robots: The Roles Of Transformational Leadership And Fear On Service Robot Risk Awareness And Robot Abuse Relationship, Cass Shum, Hyounae (Kelly) Min, Jie Sun, Heyao (Chandler) Yu, Zhaoli He

Hospitality Faculty Research

Purpose: Service robots are increasingly prevalent in the hospitality industry. While studies have explored the concept of service robot risk awareness (SRRA)– an employee’s perception of service robots posing a threat to human labor– the impact of SRRA on robot abuse and its emotional mechanism through which it affects employees remains unclear. This research leverages emotional appraisal theory to investigate the mediating role of fear of robots in the relationship between SRRA and robot abuse. Additionally, considering the influential role of leadership in shaping emotional appraisal, this study examines the moderating impact of transformational leadership.

Design/Methodology/Approach: To test the proposed …

A series of quaternary selenides, NaxMGaSe4 (M = Mn, Fe, and mixed Zn/Fe), have been synthesized for the first time employing a high-temperature solid-state synthesis route through stochiometric or polychalcogenide flux reactions. Along with the selenides, a previously reported sulfide analogue, NaxFeGaS4, is also revisited with new findings. These compounds form an interpenetrated structure made up of a supertetrahedral unit. The electrochemical evaluations exhibit a reversible (de)intercalation of ∼0.6 and ∼0.45 Na-ions, respectively, from Na2.87FeGaS4 (1a) and Na2.5FeGaSe4 (2) involving Fe2+/Fe3+ redox when cycled between 1.5 and 2.5 …

Teacher Candidate Learning Of Interdisciplinary Controversial Issues: Linking Social Studies And Science In The Elementary School Curriculum, Brandon M. Butler, Stephen R. Burgin, Mark Diacopoulos, William Mcconnell

Open Educational Resources - Teaching and Learning

Teaching controversial issues poses challenges for teacher candidates, stemming from apprehensions about potential backlash and gaps in content and pedagogical knowledge. The prevailing emphasis on tested subjects such as mathematics and reading/writing in elementary school education often sidelines social studies and science, limiting opportunities for candidates to engage with these disciplines and their associated instructional strategies, including addressing controversial topics. Integrating social studies and science with other subject areas emerges as a viable approach to ensure comprehensive education. Teacher education coursework serves as a vital platform for exposing educators to interdisciplinary curriculum design and implementation. Such exposure prompts teacher candidates …

Genealogical Ethics In The United States And The Popularization Of Genealogical Research In The Digital Age, Thomas Daniel Knight Jun 2024

Genealogical Ethics In The United States And The Popularization Of Genealogical Research In The Digital Age, Thomas Daniel Knight

History Faculty Publications

This article examines genealogical ethics in the digital age. At a time when more resources for research are available digitally than ever previously, digital media also pose challenges for the large-scale dissemination of false or misleading information as well as the incautious presentation of more careful research that then might be misconstrued by some. This article first reviews the literature about the development of academic genealogy and professional ethical standards. It then provides a series of case studies, each of which examines particular situations in which ethical questions have arisen about the presentation of research findings. This article argues for …
