Prostate cancer has heterogeneous growth patterns, and its prognosis is the poorest when it progresses to a neuroendocrine phenotype. Using bioinformatic analysis, we evaluated RNA expression of neuroendocrine genes in a panel of five different cancer types: prostate adenocarcinoma, breast cancer, kidney chromophobe, kidney renal clear cell carcinoma and kidney renal papillary cell carcinoma. Our results show that specific neuroendocrine genes are significantly dysregulated in these tumors, suggesting that they play an active role in cancer progression. Among others, synaptophysin (SYP), a conventional neuroendocrine marker, is upregulated in prostate adenocarcinoma (PRAD) and breast cancer (BRCA). Our analysis shows that SYP …

Leveraging Video Situation Monitoring In Assisted Living Environment, Hafsa Billah, Abhishek Santra, Sharma Chakravarthy Jun 2024

Leveraging Video Situation Monitoring In Assisted Living Environment, Hafsa Billah, Abhishek Santra, Sharma Chakravarthy

Association of Computing Machinery Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Video situation monitoring is essential for various applications such as surveillance and monitoring and societal applications (e.g., senior care or Assisted Living (AL) monitoring). Quality of life can be significantly improved in AL environments if various situations (e.g., monitoring community engagement, inactivity for a long time, etc.) can be analyzed automatically. These situations are currently monitored using manual analysis or custom solutions. The manual analysis process uses human-in-the-loop to watch videos exhaustively, and it is not practical and scalable for videos with long duration. On the other hand, custom solutions require each situation to be predefined and typically use sensors, …

Residual Graph Network For Assessing Cognitive Fatigue From Gait Cycle Analysis, Qiyuan An, Hamza Reza Pavel, Ayon Roy, Fillia Makedon Jun 2024

Residual Graph Network For Assessing Cognitive Fatigue From Gait Cycle Analysis, Qiyuan An, Hamza Reza Pavel, Ayon Roy, Fillia Makedon

Association of Computing Machinery Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

In this paper, we address the challenge of detecting cognitive fatigue, a condition marked by diminished cognitive capabilities during prolonged mental exertion, through a novel approach using the Residual Graph Convolutional Network (ResGCN) from the gait of individuals. Recognizing the limitations of traditional fatigue detection methods that rely on physiological signals like EEG, our research proposes a more accessible and unobtrusive technique by analyzing gait videos of individuals. Our model utilizes graph neural networks to encode the spatial positions of joint keypoints extracted from these videos via OpenPose, hypothesizing that cognitive fatigue manifests in altered body postures during walking. This …

Stock Price Trend Prediction Using Emotion Analysis Of Financial Headlines With Distilled Llm Model, Rithesh Harish Bhat, Bhanu Jain Jun 2024

Stock Price Trend Prediction Using Emotion Analysis Of Financial Headlines With Distilled Llm Model, Rithesh Harish Bhat, Bhanu Jain

Association of Computing Machinery Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Capturing the volatility of stock prices helps individual traders, stock analysts, and institutions alike increase their returns in the stock market. Financial news headlines have been shown to have a significant effect on stock price mobility. Lately, many financial portals have restricted web scraping of stock prices and other related financial data of companies from their websites. In this study we demonstrate that emotion analysis of financial news headlines alone can be sufficient in predicting stock price movement, even in the absence of any financial data. We propose an approach that eliminates the need for web scraping of financial data. …

An Assistive Robotic System For Cognitive State Assessment In Individuals With Spinal Cord Injury, Ashish Jaiswal, Gaurav Nale, Qiyuan An, Hamza Reza Pavel, Enamul Karim, Sneh Acharya, Fillia Makedon

Association of Computing Machinery Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

We introduce an innovative assistive robotic setup tailored for assessing the cognitive state of individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI) during their daily activities. Utilizing physiological sensors such as ECG, EEG, and EDA, along with cameras for facial expression, our system is designed to detect and evaluate cognitive fatigue in participants as they engage with a collaborative robot. Specifically, two tasks, Cooking Pasta Sauce and Getting Ready for Work–have been crafted to gather data on cognitive states. Participants interact with the robot using natural language (English) to perform tasks, while their physiological responses, facial expressions, and activities are recorded. The …

Engineered Features For Personal Textual Language Style Clusters, Mary E. Koone Jun 2024

Engineered Features For Personal Textual Language Style Clusters, Mary E. Koone

Association of Computing Machinery Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Hand-crafted features to detect idiolect (individual language style) in short text passages with k-means clustering differentiate individuals based on stylistic indicators. With a relatively small number of input samples and low computational resources, results are comparable to larger-scale methods and are human interpretable. The features make use of common stylometry attributes. An entropybased measure evaluates feature contribution.

Deep In The Karst: Foundations For A Career In Geography, Michael F. Goodchild Jun 2024

Deep In The Karst: Foundations For A Career In Geography, Michael F. Goodchild

The Geographical Bulletin

In the last lines of his poem “In Praise of Limestone”, W.H. Auden wrote, “[W]hen I try to imagine a faultless love or the life to come, what I hear is the murmur of underground streams, what I see is a limestone landscape”. When I was 12, my family moved to two acres of land underlain by Devonian limestone in Paignton, county of Devon, southwest England. At age 15, I began exploring the local caves – small, tight, but beautifully decorated. Later, studying physics at Cambridge, I found the University’s caving club and spent many happy weekends in and under …

All The World’S A Stage: Aesthetics, Competing Stories And Slum Clearance In Delhi, India, Richard Wolfel Jun 2024

All The World’S A Stage: Aesthetics, Competing Stories And Slum Clearance In Delhi, India, Richard Wolfel

The Geographical Bulletin

The rise of the modern commercial political-economic system is influencing rural to urban migration in addition to urban morphology. Slum settlements are one of the major results of rapid and often unregulated rural to urban migration. Slum settlements create a major problem for developing cities. The slum settlements do not fit the leadership’s vision for a modern city, one that can be marketed to outside businesses and organizations for investment. As a result they are often seen as a nuisance by the leadership and targeted for destruction, especially when the land of the slum is valuable. The process of slum …

The Geography Of Coins: Culture, Politics, And Power Depicted On Money, Cory Frewing Jun 2024

The Geography Of Coins: Culture, Politics, And Power Depicted On Money, Cory Frewing

The Geographical Bulletin

Coins have a language of their own, and governments speak it fluently. This paper discusses the role that coins play in State iconography. As such, coinage can be utilized for pursuing nationalistic ambitions and other centripetal forces that strengthen a State. Likewise, coins can also act as preservers and conveyers of national culture. Religion, language, values, and history have all been prominent subjects on coins from around the world since the Classical Era. Aside from imagery, coins are also products of spatial association, owing their current preponderance to many forms of cultural diffusion. This paper first describes contemporary, circulating world …

Thinking Continental: Writing The Planet One Place At A Time, James E. Baker Jun 2024

Thinking Continental: Writing The Planet One Place At A Time, James E. Baker

The Geographical Bulletin

“Every place,” concludes the introduction of Thinking Continental, “however nondescript and seemingly secluded and provincial, is marked with the traces of the entire planet’s becoming.” The ambition of this volume – assembled by established professors of English literature and practitioners of environmental writing – is to “write the endangered worlds” of the Anthropocene, inscribing a sense of place within a sense of planet (Lynch et al. 2017, xiv). This clarion call comes at a time of freighted global discourse over “planetarian interests” which bioregionalist Peter Berg argues are no less critical than the “ongoing mutual inhabitation of this planet” (Lynch …

Learning Regional Geography Behind The Iron Curtain, Jeffrey D. Hamerlinck

The Geographical Bulletin

This essay recounts the author’s 1987 Cold War-era adventure in the Soviet Union as a young geography student participating in Dr. William Dando’s instructor-led Soviet regional geography course at the University of North Dakota. Focused on historical military geography, the trip included visits to Moscow and Leningrad as well as the port of Murmansk above the Arctic Circle on the Kola Peninsula. The trip’s influence on the author’s career as well as his own field course teaching are discussed.

“It’S Volcanic Ash!” A Response That Began A 50-Year Odyssey, Russell Blong Jun 2024

“It’S Volcanic Ash!” A Response That Began A 50-Year Odyssey, Russell Blong

The Geographical Bulletin

At the beginning of 1970 I had more or less finished my University of Sydney PhD on hillslope form and landslides in a chunk of New Zealand hill country. I was unsure what I wanted to work on next but I was pretty sure it wasn’t landslides and hillslopes. I joined the academic staff at Macquarie University, also in Sydney. In August 1970 I went to an ANZAAS conference in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, gave an excruciatingly boring paper on hillslope form and caught up with Colin Pain, an old mate from my undergraduate days at the University of …

A Narrow Escape From The Tajik Pamir, Stephen F. Cunha

The Geographical Bulletin

This essay documents surviving attempted murder and gunshot wounds incurred during 1992 geographical f ieldwork in the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan. Our project goal was to assess the potential for a Pamir National Park in this Central Asian terra incognita where the southernmost Soviet Union met the unruly frontier with Afghanistan and China. Our personnel included geographers and government officials from the Soviet Academy of Sciences, Tajik Academy of Sciences, Goscomproda (Tajik Ministry of Environment), and the NGO Tajik Socio-Ecological Union. The initial 1991 field season involved living in Moscow through the coup attempt that ultimately disbanded the Soviet Union. …
