Full Hill-Type Muscle Model Of The I1/I3 Retractor Muscle Complex In Aplysia Californica, Qianxue Chen, Jiayi Shen, Samantha Pao, Yu Huan, Gregory P. Sutton, Jeffery P. Gill, Hillel J. Chiel

Faculty Scholarship

The coordination of complex behavior requires knowledge of both neural dynamics and the mechanics of the periphery. The feeding system of Aplysia californica is an excellent model for investigating questions in soft body systems’ neuromechanics because of its experimental tractability. Prior work has attempted to elucidate the mechanical properties of the periphery by using a Hill-type muscle model to characterize the force generation capabilities of the key protractor muscle responsible for moving Aplysia’s grasper anteriorly, the I2 muscle. However, the I1/I3 muscle, which is the main driver of retractions of Aplysia’s grasper, has not been characterized. Because of the importance …

Mother Machines: Deified Domesticity And American Misogyny In Ira Levin’S The Stepford Wives, Emmaline R. Williams

Student Theses and Dissertations

Despite an increased awareness of human rights issues and more interest in intersectional feminist practices in post-postmodern culture, the imprint of the repressed housewife lingers. My research for this work is driven by two central questions: What themes connect the emergence of this image in nineteenth century literature and art to the current social conception of women? What role do men play in maintaining these conceptions and how do they benefit? As such, this thesis examines the last 150 years of women’s social progress and regress. In this analysis centered on Ira Levin’s novel The Stepford Wives, I seek to …

Postcolonial Theory And The Intersection Of Ghanaian Cinema And Politics, Anwar Jamison Jun 2024

Postcolonial Theory And The Intersection Of Ghanaian Cinema And Politics, Anwar Jamison

Student Theses and Dissertations

The foundation of postcolonial theory rests on the assertion that the specter of colonialism permeates every aspect of society in erstwhile colonial nations. Ghana, originally called the Gold Coast, was a colony of Great Britain until 1957. That the British founded the film industry in Ghana as a tool to indoctrinate their colonial subjects provides a singular opportunity for scholarly exploration. Evaluating Ghanaian cinema from its colonial origins to its post-independence evolution, while incorporating an examination of the myriad political developments that paralleled its progression, helps to elucidate the effects of colonialism on the country’s film aesthetic. After independence, Kwame …

The Role Of Japan In The Establishment Of The Siamese Modern Armed Forces During The Reign Of King Chulalongkorn, Thep Boontanondha

Journal of Letters

The establishment of Siamese modern armed forces importantly relied on military knowledge and technologies from the Western world. As a result, Siamese armed forces sent cadets to Europe, particularly King Chulalongkorn's sons, to study military science. However, the Paknam Incident in 1894, which Siam was decisively defeated by France, made the government realize the need for rapid development of the armed forces. Furthermore, Siam recognized that relying solely on European nations limited its choices for developing the armed forces. During this time, France continued to expand its influence over territories in Southeast Asia. These factors compelled Siam to find an …

Background: The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevalence among transport workers in sub-Saharan Africa remains high, estimated at as high as 9.9% in western Uganda compared with the national prevalence of 5.4%. The prevalence of HIV among transport workers has been partly attributed to the level of knowledge regarding HIV prevention, perceived HIV risk, and stigma. Accordingly, these have been linked to high-risk HIV transmission behaviours that increase the chances of acquiring HIV among adults. Therefore, this study investigated the predictors of HIV knowledge, perceived HIV risk, and stigma among transport workers in Mbarara city in southwestern Uganda.

Methods: The …
