Birth Order And Emergent Leadership : Does One's Birth Order Influence Emergence As A Leader In A Leaderless Group?, Leanna May Bowman Jan 1999

Birth Order And Emergent Leadership : Does One's Birth Order Influence Emergence As A Leader In A Leaderless Group?, Leanna May Bowman

Honors Theses

This study was initiated as an attempt to understand how personalities affect emergence in a group as the leader. What makes other group members accept one person as the leader over another? Because birth order has been discussed as an influential factor in the development of ones personality, this variable was chosen in order to see if perhaps leader emergence from a group is influenced by the personality, which, in turn, has been shaped by something else.

This study proved that firstborns and firstborn by genders emerge from a leaderless group to guide and direct the other members, and shape …

Social Analysis Of The New Testament And Hispanic Theology: A Case Study, Efrain Agosto

Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology

The author takes an autobiographical point of departure -- his background as a New York City born Puerto Rican -- to discuss the ways his experience as a church and community leader influenced the direction of his doctoral studies. Reflecting on his dissertation on “Paul’s Use of Greco-Roman Conventions of Commendation,” he unfolds the the complex interrelationship between the social realities of Greco-Roman antiquity that were the matrix of Paul’s correspondence with the Corinthian Christian community, and the social realities of late twentieth-century U.S. Hispanic American readers of the Corinthian correspondence. The article closes by considering the need for a …

Managers Are Appointed, Leaders Emerge: How New Scientific Paradigms Inform Organizationel Leadership, Lew Beccone May 1998

Managers Are Appointed, Leaders Emerge: How New Scientific Paradigms Inform Organizationel Leadership, Lew Beccone

Theses and Graduate Projects

For most of the 20th century the mechanistic, linear world of Newtonian science has functioned both as metaphor for thinking about organizational dynamics and as the mental model around which organizations have developed. Recently, the postclassical sciences have yielded an alternate understanding of the world, one fundamentally different from that of the Newtonian model. This paper explores a world view emerging from complexity studies and quantum physics, contrasts it with the dominant image derived from classical physics, and draws implications for organizational leadership. The lens of postclassical science challenges our fundamental ontology and reframes our views of organizational life in …

Leadership Education Courses And Programs In Departments Of Agricultural Education, Susan Fritz, F. William Brown

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

This national study of post-secondary departments of agricultural education examined leadership and human resource management/development course offerings, course characteristics, future department plans, backgrounds of faculty, and related outreach activities. The majority of the courses were offered for undergraduate credit and were predominately required courses for agricultural education department majors. Nearly half of the departments offering these courses characterized their courses as nontraditional. Departments not offering leadership courses cited a lack of resources, institutional impediments and resistance, and lack of student demand as reasons for not offering the courses. Nearly half of the faculty teaching leadership education courses had traditional agricultural …

Factors Affecting Leadership Styles Of Prison Wardens: A Case Study Of Public Adult Prisons Within Virginia, Nancy Elizabeth Santiago

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Management

This study attempts to identify the leadership styles of Virginia prison wardens within public adult prisons, and to determine which factors contribute to the development of their leadership styles. Determinants Of Participation In The Ad Hoc Computer-Supported Workgroup, Nancy A. Floyd Jan 1998

Determinants Of Participation In The Ad Hoc Computer-Supported Workgroup, Nancy A. Floyd

Theses and Dissertations

The increase of end-user computing, including the use of computer-mediated communication systems (CMCS), is one of the most significant changes to occur in business information systems in recent years. Researchers suggest that changes in technology lead to changes in the way individuals think about work and how they perform it. An important question is how the use of CMCS is changing work and work relationships. This study considers a portion of this question; it asks "What makes individuals willing to participate in a computer-supported workgroup (CSWG)."

This study considered the relationship between three variables (sex, anonymity, and token status) and …

This paper is the result of a week long participant observation of a technical project review team within a large organization. A detailed log was maintained during the study and the results were analyzed to understand the relationship of the observations to prior research in organizational dynamics. Some of the existing literature implies that the current research on organizational development may be applicable to entities of various sizes. In some cases the observations from this research fell within the framework of the existing theories. However, alterations must be made to the current theories to apply specifically to small work groups …

Social Intelligence, Problem Construction, And Leadership: The Trait Approach Revisited, David Michael Koch Apr 1997

Social Intelligence, Problem Construction, And Leadership: The Trait Approach Revisited, David Michael Koch

Student Work

Social intelligence is a personality trait that refers to an individual's ability to correctly interpret their environment and take the appropriate action. Recent research (Gilbert, 1994) found social intelligence to be an important and significant predictor of leader effectiveness across multiple situations. Because the social intelligence construct can account for effective leadership behavior across multiple situations, it may represent a reconciliation of the trait and situation theories of leadership.

The purpose of this study was to continue this line of research on social intelligence and leadership by examining the role of social intelligence in creative problem solving. Problem construction is …

Reexamination Of The Development Of The Accounting Profession - Critical Events From 1912-1940, Ram S. Sriram, Gloria Vollmers Jan 1997

Reexamination Of The Development Of The Accounting Profession - Critical Events From 1912-1940, Ram S. Sriram, Gloria Vollmers

Accounting Historians Journal

This study reexamines the accounting profession's response to opportunities and incentives given it during three unique periods in its history to foster reliable accounting, reporting and auditing practices. By profession, we mean the auditors of publicly held companies as represented by the American Institute of Accountants and its predecessor, the American Association of Public Accountants (AAPA). We use two models of professionalism, the Functionalist and the Conflict models, to interpret the profession's response to these events. We find that both self interest and the public interest may have motivated many of the actions taken. These motivations are not, however, mutually …

The Relationship Between Self-Monitoring And Organizational Training Effectiveness And Satisfaction, Joanna Wulbert

Dissertations and Theses

The present research explored the relationship between self-monitoring and training. It was hypothesized that high self-monitors' sens ivity to social cues would improve training satisfaction and learning. This study was divided into 2 parts; a field and a laboratory study. Nine trainees and 8 peer trainers participated in the field study and 75 undergraduate psychology students participated in the laboratory study. Due to the extremely small sample size of the field study, the results were not conclusive. In the laboratory study, trainers' that were categorized as high self-monitors were associated with higher satisfaction levels among trainees. However, self-monitoring was not …

This study is grounded in a Black women's standpoint, and places Black women's experiences at the center of analysis. In answer to the question "How do we know the world?," the standpoint …

Women Who Lead High Schools: A Missing Element In Leadership Theory., Kristy Brock Hebert Jan 1996

Women Who Lead High Schools: A Missing Element In Leadership Theory., Kristy Brock Hebert

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

I addressed the problem that leadership theory is lacking in regard to how women lead high schools. My primary purpose was to contribute to the limited literature that exists regarding the leadership practices of women who are high school principals. I explored the notion of a female culture of school leadership and situated that culture among quintessential theory dictated by organizational research. I conducted this study in two phases. In Phase One I reported the demographics of 44 female high school principals in Louisiana along with their self-reported values on 32 leadership characteristics. The Competitive Advantage Of The Inner City: Does Race Matter?, Philip S. Hart Jan 1995

The Competitive Advantage Of The Inner City: Does Race Matter?, Philip S. Hart

William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications

Following up on his important work on the competitive advantage of nations, economist Michael Porter has turned his attention to the competitive advantage of the inner city. In his work on the competitiveness of nations—a five-year study often leading trading nations—Porter found that no nation was competitive in everything. He noted that competitive success tends to concentrate in particular industries and groups of interconnected industries, or clusters.

By turning his attention on the inner city, Porter has helped to reinforce the emerging sense that it is important to concentrate on the assets of such locations rather than on their liabilities. …
