Impossibility Of Artificial Inventors, Matt Blaszczyk

Fellow, Adjunct, Lecturer, and Research Scholar Works

Recently, the United Kingdom Supreme Court decided that only natural persons can be considered inventors. A year before, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit issued a similar decision. In fact, so have many the courts all over the world. This Article analyses these decisions, argues that the courts got it right, and finds that artificial inventorship is at odds with patent law doctrine, theory, and philosophy. “Fugitive and Sumud Encounters: Geographies of Black-Palestinian Transnational Refusal” explores the parallel practices of Palestinian sumud, a “political-psycho-affective subjectivity” or philosophy of refusal that roughly translates to “steadfastness” from Arabic, and Black fugitivity, the practice by which Black folk find freedom and escape from the continual construction of Blackness as fungible object, rooted in histories of maroonage. Both practices of refusal are historically and spatially contingent, responding to conditions of settler colonial and anti-Black enclosure. However, when put into conversion, sumud and fugitivity are strikingly familiar in their methods of refusing liberal enclosure. In their overlap, sumud and fugitivity lay …

This article apprehends a precarious moment when the queer and the tropics coincide to form a new fabric of sensing in this age of climate crisis. Queer and tropics are intimate, not only because both embody their inherent openness and fluidity, but also because each is woven closely by the corollary contradictions that besiege them, such as heteronormativity, capitalism, and environmental degradation. Prophetic Dissent In Dark Times: The New Poor People’S Campaign And The Rhetoric Of National Redemption, Stephen E. Rahko, Byron B. Craig

In this paper, we offer an analysis of an important social movement challenging the fantasy of Christian nationalism: the new Poor People’s Campaign, and specifically the rhetoric of the Bishop Dr. William J. Barber II. We argue that Barber’s rhetoric represents a source of dissent against Christian nationalism through his strategic use of the jeremiad. Barber’s progressive jeremiad offers a distinctively moral narrative that recovers the radical Christian legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ultimately, we argue that Barber’s jeremiad advances a distinctive narrative of American national redemption through democratic renewal and reconstruction.

Youth ministry has taken several “turns” in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, culminating in the current existential turn. This latest shift acknowledges a more diverse youth demographic (Gen Z) concerned with identity, significance, purpose, belonging, and survival. Numerous existential threats have contributed to this generation’s unprecedented mental health crisis. Nevertheless, members of Gen Z are determined to meet these threats and create the conditions for all to flourish. This paper seeks to articulate a supportive and uniquely Adventist response to the existential turn in the form of Sabbath rest.

Immigration Ministry Implications Of Hallyu: Exploration Of The Potential Impact Of South Korean Popular Cultural Flow On Ministry By And To Immigrants, David Kim

The phenomenon of Hallyu—Korean popular culture—is globally extensive in its influence and reception. Hallyu has transformed how South Koreans and Korean American immigrants perceive their identity and cultural esteem. Coupled with the Korean American immigrant church’s central role in establishing and growing its communities, Hallyu conditions present an opportunity to impact the immigrant ministry in North America. This study suggests that Hallyu lowers barriers to cross-cultural engagement and connection which can positively impact ministry conducted by immigrants and to immigrants.

Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891) follows the life of a doomed high-class gay man named Dorian while revealing a discussion of art and the imitation of life itself. This paper reveals the parallels between characters like Dorian and Lord Henry's life to Wilde himself and how they all move through society as high-class gay men. The intersectionality of both identities provides a social commentary on societal policing, compulsory heterosexuality, and the villainization of queerness through the lives of men who lived in 19th-century England with challenges like the Criminal Amendment Act of 1885 and laws against sodomy. …

However, little is known about the impact of teachers’ emotional management and sensitivity on the development of inhibition skills among students in early childhood classrooms. Amidst increasing religious disaffiliation, often due to a perceived tension between faith and the STEM disciplines, Catholic schools provide critical opportunities for young people to recognize how these domains can be mutually elevating. The field, however, lacks guidance as to how this integration should occur in practice. This conceptual paper first provides an overarching framework for how aspects of the Catholic tradition, like Scripture and the Catholic social tradition, can shape traditional educational domains of STEM teaching and learning. Culture shapes how people express and feel emotions in specific situations and certain aspects of emotions vary across cultures. Body expressions are as powerful as facial expressions in conveying emotions, with North Americans tending to exhibit more exaggerated emotional body language (EBL) than East Asians (Scherer et al., 2018). Our study used two experiments to explore whether individuals' emotion recognition of EBL was affected by cultural background information. Experiment 1 recruited fifty Chinese participants to explored whether individual recognition of emotions was affected by the cultural background of the expresser. This study aimed to investigate the bicultural identity integration between 1st and 2nd generation Bangladeshi in the UK and the relationship between various identity profiles with personal and family life satisfaction measures. In line with Boski’s (2021) theoretical framework, cultural identity has been conceptualized in a theoretical three steps model. First, cultures are described on a set of values, to establish their joint and mutually exclusive characteristics. Next participants express their personal preferences on the same set of values.
